Abstract

Two of the most pressing questions in physics are the microscopic nature of the dark matter that comprises 84% of the mass in the universe and the absence of a neutron electric dipole moment. These questions would be resolved by the existence of a hypothetical particle known as the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) axion. In this work, we probe the hypothesis that axions constitute dark matter, using the ABRACADABRA-10cm experiment in a broadband configuration, with world-leading sensitivity. We find no significant evidence for axions, and we present 95% upper limits on the axion-photon coupling down to the world-leading level $g_{a\gamma\gamma}<3.2 \times10^{-11}$ GeV$^{-1}$, representing one of the most sensitive searches for axions in the 0.41 - 8.27 neV mass range. Our work paves a direct path for future experiments capable of confirming or excluding the hypothesis that dark matter is a QCD axion in the mass range motivated by String Theory and Grand Unified Theories., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

Abstract

The past few years have seen a renewed interest in the search for light particle dark matter. ABRACADABRA is a new experimental program to search for axion dark matter over a broad range of masses, $10^{-12}\lesssim m_a\lesssim10^{-6}$ eV. ABRACADABRA-10 cm is a small-scale prototype for a future detector that could be sensitive to QCD axion couplings. In this paper, we present the details of the design, construction, and data analysis for the first axion dark matter search with the ABRACADABRA-10 cm detector. Abstract

The FlatDot detector has been used to demonstrate the separation of Cherenkov and scintillation light for 1 to 2MeV electrons in linear alkylbenzene (LAB). With an average PMT transit time spread (TTS) of 200ps, the early light in each event is clearly dominated by the Cherenkov signal, which on average comprises $86^{+2}_{-3}\%$ of the light collected in the first 4.1ns of each event. The spatial distributions of the Cherenkov and scintillation light are found to match those predicted in Monte Carlo simulations. This is a key step towards demonstrating direction reconstruction of $\beta$ decays, a technique that could reduce $^8$B solar neutrino backgrounds for neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments in liquid scintillator., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures. Abstract

The axion is a promising dark matter candidate, which was originally proposed to solve the strong-CP problem in particle physics. To date, the available parameter space for axion and axion-like particle dark matter is relatively unexplored, particularly at masses $m_a\lesssim1\,\mu$eV. ABRACADABRA is a new experimental program to search for axion dark matter over a broad range of masses, $10^{-12}\lesssim m_a\lesssim10^{-6}$ eV. ABRACADABRA-10 cm is a small-scale prototype for a future detector that could be sensitive to the QCD axion. In this Letter, we present the first results from a 1 month search for axions with ABRACADABRA-10 cm. We find no evidence for axion-like cosmic dark matter and set 95% C.L. upper limits on the axion-photon coupling between $g_{a\gamma\gamma}<1.4\times10^{-10}$ GeV$^{-1}$ and $g_{a\gamma\gamma}<3.3\times10^{-9}$ GeV$^{-1}$ over the mass range $3.1\times10^{-10}$ eV - $8.3\times10^{-9}$ eV. Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay that has been able to reach the 1-ton scale. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO 2 crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers, each of them made of 52 crystals. The construction of the experiment was completed in August 2016 and the data taking started in spring 2017 after a period of commissioning and tests. In this work we present the neutrinoless double beta decay results of CUORE from examining a total TeO 2 exposure of 86.3 kg yr, characterized by an effective energy resolution of 7.7 keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of 0.014 counts/(keV kg yr). In this physics run, CUORE placed a lower limit on the decay half-life of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130 Te ≤ 1.3 · 10 25 yr (90% C.L.). Moreover, an analysis of the background of the experiment is presented as well as the measurement of the 130 Te 2vββ decay with a resulting half-life of T 2v1/2 = [7.9 ± 0.1 (stat.) ± 0.2 (syst.)] x 10 20 yr which is the most precise measurement of the half-life and compatible with previous results.

8. Separating Double-Beta Decay Events from Solar Neutrino Interactions in a Kiloton-Scale Liquid Scintillator Detector By Fast Timing

Abstract

We present a technique for separating nuclear double beta decay ($\beta\beta$-decay) events from background neutrino interactions due to $^{8}$B decays in the sun. This background becomes dominant in a kiloton-scale liquid-scintillator detector deep underground and is usually considered as irreducible due to an overlap in deposited energy with the signal. However, electrons from 0$\nu\beta\beta$-decay often exceed the Cherenkov threshold in liquid scintillator, producing photons that are prompt and correlated in direction with the initial electron direction. The use of large-area fast photodetectors allows some separation of these prompt photons from delayed isotropic scintillation light and, thus, the possibility of reconstructing the event topology. Using a simulation of a 6.5~m radius liquid scintillator detector with 100~ps resolution photodetectors, we show that a spherical harmonics analysis of early-arrival light can discriminate between 0$\nu\beta\beta$-decay signal and $^{8}$B solar neutrino background events on a statistical basis. Good separation will require the development of a slow scintillator with a 5 nsec risetime.

Abstract

This thesis describes the design, operation and results of anexperimental search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0$\nu\beta\beta$) of$^{130}$Te using the CUORE-0 detector.The discovery of 0$\nu\beta\beta$ would have profound implications for particlephysics and our understanding of the Universe. Its discovery woulddemonstrate the violation of lepton number and imply that neutrinosare Majorana fermions and therefore their own anti-particles. Combinedwith other experimental results, the discovery of 0$\nu\beta\beta$ could alsohave implications for understanding the absolute neutrino mass scaleas well as the presently unknown neutrino mass hierarchy.The CUORE experiment is a ton-scale search for 0$\nu\beta\beta$ in $^{130}$Teexpected to begin operation in late 2015. The first stage ofthis experiment is a smaller 39-kg active-mass detector called CUORE-0. Thisdetector contains 11~kg of $^{130}$Te and operates in the LaboratoriNazionali del Gran Sasso lab in Italy from 2013 -- 2015.The results presented here are based on a $^\text{nat}$TeO$_2$exposure of 35.2~kg$\cdot$yr, or 9.8~kg$\cdot$yr exposure of $^{130}$Te collectedbetween 2013 -- 2015. We see no evidence of 0$\nu\beta\beta$ and place anupper limit on the 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay rate of$\Gamma_\text{0$\nu\beta\beta$}2.8\times10^{24}$~yr (90\% C.L.).We combine the present result with the results of previous searches in$^{130}$Te. Combining it with the 1.2~kg$\cdot$yr $^{130}$Te exposure from theThree Towers Test run we place a half-life limit of$T_{1/2}^{0\nu}>3.3\times10^{24}$~yr (90\% C.L.). And combining theseresults with the 19.75~kg$\cdot$yr $^{130}$Te exposure from CUORE-0ino, we placethe strongest limit on the 0$\nu\beta\beta$ half-life of $^{130}$Te to date, at$T^{0\nu}_{1/2}>4.5\times10^{24}$~yr (90\% C.L.). Using the presentnuclear matrix element calculations for $^{130}$Te, this resultcorresponds to a 90\% upper limit range on the effective Majoranamass of $m_{\beta\beta}

Abstract We present the results of a search for MeV-scale electron antineutrino events in KamLAND coincident with the 60 gravitational wave events/candidates reported by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration during their second and third observing runs. We find no significant coincident signals within a ±500 s timing window from each gravitational wave and present 90% C.L. upper limits on the electron antineutrino fluence between 108 and 1013 cm−2 for neutrino energies in the energy range of 1.8–111 MeV.

CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) is a ton-scale experiment aiming to the search of neutrino-less double beta decay in 130Te with a projected sensitivity on the Majorana effective mass close to the inverted hierarchy region. The CUORE detector consists of a segmented array of 988 TeO2 bolometers, organized in 19 towers and operated at a temperature of about 10 mK thanks to a custom cryogenic system which, besides the uncommon scale, observes several constraints from the radio-purity of the materials to the mechanical decoupling of the cooling systems. The successful commissioning of the CUORE cryogenic system has been completed early in 2016 and represents an outstanding achievement by itself. The installation of the detector proceeded along 2016 followed by the cooldown to base temperature at the beginning of 2017. The CUORE detector is now operational and has been taking science data since Spring 2017. With the first ∼3 weeks of collected data, we present here the most stringent constraint on the 130Te half-live for the neutrino-less double beta decay.

16. Limits on Astrophysical Antineutrinos with the KamLAND Experiment

Abstract

We report on a search for electron antineutrinos (${\bar{\nu }}_{e}$) from astrophysical sources in the neutrino energy range 8.3–30.8 MeV with the KamLAND detector. In an exposure of 6.72 kton-year of the liquid scintillator, we observe 18 candidate events via the inverse beta decay reaction. Although there is a large background uncertainty from neutral current atmospheric neutrino interactions, we find no significant excess over background model predictions. Assuming several supernova relic neutrino spectra, we give upper flux limits of 60–110 cm−2 s−1 (90% confidence level, CL) in the analysis range and present a model-independent flux. We also set limits on the annihilation rates for light dark matter pairs to neutrino pairs. These data improve on the upper probability limit of 8B solar neutrinos converting into ${\bar{\nu }}_{e}$, ${P}_{{\nu }_{e}\to {\bar{\nu }}_{e}}\lt 3.5\times {10}^{-5}$ (90% CL) assuming an undistorted ${\bar{\nu }}_{e}$ shape. This corresponds to a solar ${\bar{\nu }}_{e}$ flux of 60 cm−2 s−1 (90% CL) in the analysis energy range.

© World Scientific Publishing Company. TeO2 bolometers have been used for many years to search for neutrinoless double beta decay in 130Te. CUORE, a tonne-scale TeO2 detector array, recently published the most sensitive limit on the half-life, > 1.5 × 1025 yr, which corresponds to an upper bound of 140-400 meV on the effective Majorana mass of the neutrino. While it makes CUORE a world-leading experiment looking for neutrinoless double beta decay, it is not the only study that CUORE will contribute to in the field of nuclear and particle physics. As already done over the years with many small-scale experiments, CUORE will investigate both rare decays (such as the two-neutrino double beta decay of 130Te and the hypothesized electron capture in 123Te), and rare processes (e.g. dark matter and axion interactions). This paper describes some of the achievements of past experiments that used TeO2 bolometers, and perspectives for CUORE.

© 2016 IOP Publishing Ltd and Sissa Medialab srl. The CUORE experiment will search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 130Te with an array of 988 TeO2 bolometers arranged in 19 towers. CUORE-0, the first tower assembled according to the CUORE procedures, was built and commissioned at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, and took data from March 2013 to March 2015. In this paper we describe the design, construction and operation of the CUORE-0 experiment, with an emphasis on the improvements made over a predecessor experiment, Cuoricino. In particular, we demonstrate with CUORE-0 data that the design goals of CUORE are within reach.

Abstract

The past few years have seen a renewed interest in the search for light particle dark matter. ABRACADABRA is a new experimental program to search for axion dark matter over a broad range of masses, 10^{-12}≲m_{a}≲10^{-6} eV. ABRACADABRA-10 cm is a small-scale prototype for a future detector that could be sensitive to QCD axion couplings. In this paper, we present the details of the design, construction, and data analysis for the first axion dark matter search with the ABRACADABRA-10 cm detector. We include a detailed discussion of the statistical techniques used to extract the limit from the first result with an emphasis on creating a robust statistical footing for interpreting those limits.

© Copyright owned by the author(s). CUORE is a ton-scale experiment approaching the data taking phase in Gran Sasso National Laboratory. Its primary goal is to search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay in 130 Te using 988 crystals of tellurim dioxide. The crystals are operated as bolometers at about 10 mK taking advantage of one of the largest dilution cryostat ever built. Concluded in March 2016, the cryostat commissioning consisted in a sequence of cool down runs each one integrating new parts of the apparatus. The last run was performed with the fully configured cryostat and the thermal load at 4 K reached the impressive mass of about 14 tons. During that run the base temperature of 6.3 mK was reached and maintained for more than 70 days. An array of 8 crystals, called mini-tower, was used to check bolometers operation, readout electronics and DAQ. Results will be presented in terms of cooling power, electronic noise, energy resolution and preliminary background measurements.

Abstract

Recently there has been a surge of new experimental proposals to search for ultra-light axion dark matter with axion mass, $m_a\lesssim1\,\mu$eV. Many of these proposals search for small oscillating magnetic fields induced in or around a large static magnetic field. Lately, there has been interest in alternate detection schemes which search for oscillating electric fields in a similar setup. In this paper, we explicitly solve Maxwell's equations in a simplified geometry and demonstrate that in this mass range, the axion induced electric fields are heavily suppressed by boundary conditions. Unfortunately, experimentally measuring axion induced electric fields is not feasible in this mass regime using the currently proposed setups with static primary fields. We show that at larger axion masses, induced electric fields are not suppressed, but boundary effects may still be relevant for an experiment's sensitivity. We then make a general argument about a generic detector configuration with a static magnetic field to show that the electric fields are always suppressed in the limit of large wavelength., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay that has been able to reach the 1-ton scale. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO[subscript 2] crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers, each of them made of 52 crystals. The construction of the experiment was completed in August 2016 and the data taking started in spring 2017 after a period of commissioning and tests. In this work we present the neutrinoless double beta decay results of CUORE from examining a total TeO[subscript 2] exposure of 86.3kgyr , characterized by an effective energy resolution of 7.7 keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of 0.014 counts/(keVkgyr) . In this physics run, CUORE placed a lower limit on the decay half-life of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te>1.3⋅1025 yr (90% C.L.). Moreover, an analysis of the background of the experiment is presented as well as the measurement of the 130 Te 2 νββ decay with a resulting half-life of T2ν1/2=[7.9±0.1(stat.)±0.2(syst.)]×1020 yr which is the most precise measurement of the half-life and compatible with previous results. ©2019 Keywords: neutrinoless double beta decay; CUORE; Majorana Neutrino, National Science Foundation (grant nos. Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a large-scale double beta decay experiment utilizing cryogenic bolometers that is currently being commissioned at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) in Italy. Its primary focus is to search for the neutrino-less double beta decay of 130 Te with a projected sensitivity to Majorana neutrino masses near the inverted mass hierarchy region. The detector is composed of 988 5x5x5-cm 3 TeO 2 crystals of natural isotopic composition arranged in 19 towers of 52 crystals each, all housed in a common dilution refrigerator. A single CUORE-like tower, CUORE-0, was assembled and operated as a stand-alone detector for a period of approximately two years. In this report, the results from CUORE-0 and the current status and physics potential of CUORE are presented.

Abstract

We report a study of the CUORE sensitivity to neutrinoless double beta (0) decay. We used a Bayesian analysis based on a toy Monte Carlo (MC) approach to extract the exclusion sensitivity to the 0 decay half-life (T[superscript 0ν][subscript 1/2]) at 90 % credibility interval (CI) – i.e. the interval containing the true value of T[superscript 0ν][subscript 1/2] with 90 % probability – and the 3σ discovery sensitivity. We consider various background levels and energy resolutions, and describe the influence of the data division in subsets with different background levels. If the background level and the energy resolution meet the expectation, CUORE will reach a 90 % CI exclusion sensitivity of 2 · 10[superscript 25] year with 3 months, and 9 · 10[superscript 25] year with 5 years of live time. 37. Latest Results from the CUORE Experiment

Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) that has been able to reach the one-ton scale. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO2 crystals arranged in a compact cylindrical structure of 19 towers. The construction of the experiment was completed in August 2016 with the installation of all towers in the cryostat. Following a cooldown, diagnostic, and optimization campaign, routine data-taking began in spring 2017. After the first two months of data taking, CUORE collected a total TeO2 exposure of 86.3 kg·yr with an average energy resolution of 7.7 keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of 0.014 counts/(keV·kg·yr). With this dataset, CUORE placed a lower limit on the 130Te 0νββ half-life of > 1.3 × 1025 yr (90% C.L.). In this talk, we report on the latest evaluation of the CUORE background budget, and using this same 86.3 kg·yr dataset, we present the most precise measurement of the 130Te 0νββ half-life to date.

In this work we present the neutrinoless double beta decay results of CUORE from examining a total TeO2 exposure of 86.3kg yr, characterized by an effective energy resolution of 7.7 keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of 0.014 counts/ (keV kg yr). In this physics run, CUORE placed a lower limit on the decay half- life of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te > 1.3.1025 yr (90% C. L.). Moreover, an analysis of the background of the experiment is presented as well as the measurement of the 130Te 2vo3p decay with a resulting half- life of T2 2. [7.9 :- 0.1 (stat.) :- 0.2 (syst.)] x 10(20) yr which is the most precise measurement of the half- life and compatible with previous results

Abstract

We report on the measurement of the two-neutrino double-beta decay half-life of ¹³⁰Te with the CUORE-0 detector. From an exposure of 33.4 kg year of TeO₂, the half-life is determined to be T[subscript 1/2][superscript 2ν] = [8.2 ± 0.2 (stat.) ± 0.6 (syst.)] × 10²⁰ year. Abstract

We present a search, using KamLAND, a kiloton-scale anti-neutrino detector, for low-energy anti-neutrino events that were coincident with the gravitational-wave (GW) events GW150914 and GW151226, and the candidate event LVT151012. We find no inverse beta-decay neutrino events within ±500 s of either GW signal. This non-detection is used to constrain the electron anti-neutrino fluence and the total integrated luminosity of the astrophysical sources., United States. Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of ¹³⁰ Te with an array of 988 TeO₂ bolometers operating at temperatures around 10 mK. The experiment is currently being commissioned in Hall A of Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy. The goal of CUORE is to reach a 90% C.L. exclusion sensitivity on the ¹³⁰ Te decay half-life of 9 × 10 ²⁵ years after 5 years of data taking. The main issue to be addressed to accomplish this aim is the rate of background events in the region of interest, which must not be higher than 10 ⁻² counts/keV/kg/year. We developed a detailed Monte Carlo simulation, based on results from a campaign of material screening, radioassays, and bolometric measurements, to evaluate the expected background. This was used over the years to guide the construction strategies of the experiment and we use it here to project a background model for CUORE. Abstract

The cryogenic underground observatory for rare events (CUORE) is a 1-ton scale bolometric experiment whose detector consists of an array of 988 TeO[subscript 2] crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers. This will be the largest bolometric mass ever operated. The experiment will work at a temperature around or below 10 mK. CUORE cryostat consists of a cryogen-free system based on pulse tubes and a custom high power dilution refrigerator, designed to match these specifications. The cryostat has been commissioned in 2014 at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories and reached a record temperature of 6 mK on a cubic meter scale. In this paper, we present results of CUORE commissioning runs. Details on the thermal characteristics and cryogenic performances of the system will be also given.
