Security and RAS are two non-functional requirements under focus for current systems developed for the computing continuum. Due to the increased number of interconnected computer systems across the continuum, security becomes especially pervasive at all levels, from the smallest edge device to the high-performance cloud at the other end. Similarly, RAS (Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability) ensures the robustness of a system towards hardware defects. Namely, making them reliable, with high availability and design for easy service. In this paper and as a result of the Vitamin-V EU project, the authors detail the comprehensive approach to malware and hardware attack detection; as well as, the RAS features envisioned for future systems across the computing continuum.

Dirac showed that the existence of one magnetic pole in the universe could offer an explanation of the discrete nature of the electric charge. Magnetic poles appear naturally in most grand unified theories. Their discovery would be of greatest importance for particle physics and cosmology. The intense experimental search carried thus far has not met with success. In order to understand this lack of success we studied monopolium a monopole anti-monopole bound state with properties very different from monopoles in which monopoles could be hiding. In here, we propose another mechanism, namely that magnetic poles bind deeply with some neutral states hiding in this way some of the properties of the free monopoles. We study different scenarios of these systems and analyze their detectability. Artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized decision-making processes and systems throughout society and, in particular, has emerged as a significant technology in high-impact scenarios of national interest. Yet, despite AI's impressive predictive capabilities in controlled settings, it still suffers from a range of practical setbacks preventing its widespread use in various critical scenarios. In particular, it is generally unclear if a given AI system's predictions can be trusted by decision-makers in downstream applications. To address the need for more transparent, robust, and trustworthy AI systems, a suite of tools has been developed to quantify the uncertainty of AI predictions and, more generally, enable AI to "self-assess" the reliability of its predictions. In this manuscript, we categorize methods for AI self-assessment along several key dimensions and provide guidelines for selecting and designing the appropriate method for a practitioner's needs. In particular, we focus on uncertainty estimation techniques that consider the impact of self-assessment on the choices made by downstream decision-makers and on the resulting costs and benefits of decision outcomes. To demonstrate the utility of our methodology for self-assessment design, we illustrate its use for two realistic national-interest scenarios. This manuscript is a practical guide for machine learning engineers and AI system users to select the ideal self-assessment techniques for each problem.

Large language models (LLMs) are having transformative impacts across a wide range of scientific fields, particularly in the biomedical sciences. Just as the goal of Natural Language Processing is to understand sequences of words, a major objective in biology is to understand biological sequences. Genomic Language Models (gLMs), which are LLMs trained on DNA sequences, have the potential to significantly advance our understanding of genomes and how DNA elements at various scales interact to give rise to complex functions. To showcase this potential, we highlight key applications of gLMs, including functional constraint prediction, sequence design, and transfer learning. Despite notable recent progress, however, developing effective and efficient gLMs presents numerous challenges, especially for species with large, complex genomes. The power grid is a critical infrastructure that allows for the efficient and robust generation, transmission, delivery and consumption of electricity. In the recent years, the physical components have been equipped with computing and network devices, which optimizes the operation and maintenance of the grid. The cyber domain of this smart power grid opens a new plethora of threats, which adds to classical threats on the physical domain. Accordingly, different stakeholders including regulation bodies, industry and academy, are making increasing efforts to provide security mechanisms to mitigate and reduce cyber-risks. Despite these efforts, there have been various cyberattacks that have affected the smart grid, leading in some cases to catastrophic consequences, showcasing that the industry might not be prepared for attacks from high profile adversaries. At the same time, recent work shows a lack of agreement among grid practitioners and academic experts on the feasibility and consequences of academic-proposed threats. This is in part due to inadequate simulation models which do not evaluate threats based on attackers full capabilities and goals. To address this gap, in this work we first analyze the main attack surfaces of the smart grid, and then conduct a threat analysis from the adversarial model perspective, including different levels of knowledge, goals, motivations and capabilities. To validate the model, we provide real-world examples of the potential capabilities by studying known vulnerabilities in critical components, and then analyzing existing cyber-attacks that have affected the smart grid, either directly or indirectly., Comment: Presented at the Workshop on Attackers and Cyber-Crime Operations (WACCO). We present the Sloan Digital Sky Survey V (SDSS-V) Local Volume Mapper (LVM). The LVM is an integral-field spectroscopic survey of the Milky Way, Magellanic Clouds, and of a sample of local volume galaxies, connecting resolved pc-scale individual sources of feedback to kpc-scale ionized interstellar medium (ISM) properties. The 4-year survey covers the southern Milky Way disk at spatial resolutions of 0.05 to 1 pc, the Magellanic Clouds at 10 pc resolution, and nearby large galaxies at larger scales totaling $>4300$ square degrees of sky, and more than 55M spectra. It utilizes a new facility of alt-alt mounted siderostats feeding 16 cm refractive telescopes, lenslet-coupled fiber-optics, and spectrographs covering 3600-9800A at R ~ 4000. The ultra-wide field IFU has a diameter of 0.5 degrees with 1801 hexagonally packed fibers of 35.3 arcsec apertures. The siderostats allow for a completely stationary fiber system, avoiding instability of the line spread function seen in traditional fiber feeds. Scientifically, LVM resolves the regions where energy, momentum, and chemical elements are injected into the ISM at the scale of gas clouds, while simultaneously charting where energy is being dissipated (via cooling, shocks, turbulence, bulk flows, etc.) to global scales. This combined local and global view enables us to constrain physical processes regulating how stellar feedback operates and couples to galactic kinematics and disk-scale structures, such as the bar and spiral arms, as well as gas in- and out-flows., Comment: 29 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal

Domain Specific Languages (DSLs) increase programmer productivity and provide high performance. Their targeted abstractions allow scientists to express problems at a high level, providing rich details that optimizing compilers can exploit to target current- and next-generation supercomputers. The convenience and performance of DSLs come with significant development and maintenance costs. The siloed design of DSL compilers and the resulting inability to benefit from shared infrastructure cause uncertainties around longevity and the adoption of DSLs at scale. By tailoring the broadly-adopted MLIR compiler framework to HPC, we bring the same synergies that the machine learning community already exploits across their DSLs (e.g. Tensorflow, PyTorch) to the finite-difference stencil HPC community. We introduce new HPC-specific abstractions for message passing targeting distributed stencil computations. We demonstrate the sharing of common components across three distinct HPC stencil-DSL compilers: Devito, PSyclone, and the Open Earth Compiler, showing that our framework generates high-performance executables based upon a shared compiler ecosystem.

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used in robotics, especially for high-level action planning. Meanwhile, many robotics applications involve human supervisors or collaborators. Hence, it is crucial for LLMs to generate socially acceptable actions that align with people's preferences and values. In this work, we test whether LLMs capture people's intuitions about behavior judgments and communication preferences in human-robot interaction (HRI) scenarios. For evaluation, we reproduce three HRI user studies, comparing the output of LLMs with that of real participants. We find that GPT-4 strongly outperforms other models, generating answers that correlate strongly with users' answers in two studies $\unicode{x2014}$ the first study dealing with selecting the most appropriate communicative act for a robot in various situations ($r_s$ = 0.82), and the second with judging the desirability, intentionality, and surprisingness of behavior ($r_s$ = 0.83). However, for the last study, testing whether people judge the behavior of robots and humans differently, no model achieves strong correlations. Epilepsy is a prevalent neurological disorder that affects approximately 1% of the global population. Around 30-40% of patients do not respond to pharmacological treatment, leading to a significant negative impact on their quality of life. Closed-loop deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a promising treatment for individuals who do not respond to medical therapy. To achieve effective seizure control, algorithms play an important role in identifying relevant electrographic biomarkers from local field potentials (LFPs) to determine the optimal stimulation timing. In this regard, the detection and classification of events from ongoing brain activity, while achieving low power through computationally unexpensive implementations, represents a major challenge in the field. To address this challenge, we here present two lightweight algorithms, the ZdensityRODE and the AMPDE, for identifying relevant events from LFPs by utilizing semantic segmentation, which involves extracting different levels of information from the LFP and relevant events from it. The algorithms performance was validated against epileptiform activity induced by 4-minopyridine in mouse hippocampus-cortex (CTX) slices and recorded via microelectrode array, as a case study. The ZdensityRODE algorithm showcased a precision and recall of 93% for ictal event detection and 42% precision for interictal event detection, while the AMPDE algorithm attained a precision of 96% and recall of 90% for ictal event detection and 54% precision for interictal event detection. While initially trained specifically for detection of ictal activity, these algorithms can be fine-tuned for improved interictal detection, aiming at seizure prediction. The challenges associated with effectively programming FPGAs have been a major blocker in popularising reconfigurable architectures for HPC workloads. However new compiler technologies, such as MLIR, are providing new capabilities which potentially deliver the ability to extract domain specific information and drive automatic structuring of codes for FPGAs. In this paper we explore domain specific optimisations for stencils, a fundamental access pattern in scientific computing, to obtain high performance on FPGAs via automated code structuring. We propose Stencil-HMLS, a multi-layered approach to automatic optimisation of stencil codes and introduce the HLS dialect, which brings FPGA programming into the MLIR ecosystem. Using the PSyclone Fortran DSL, we demonstrate an improvement of 14-100$\times$ with respect to the next best performant state-of-the-art tool. In recent years the use of FPGAs to accelerate scientific applications has grown, with numerous applications demonstrating the benefit of FPGAs for high performance workloads. However, whilst High Level Synthesis (HLS) has significantly lowered the barrier to entry in programming FPGAs by enabling programmers to use C++, a major challenge is that most often these codes are not originally written in C++. Instead, Fortran is the lingua franca of scientific computing and-so it requires a complex and time consuming initial step to convert into C++ even before considering the FPGA. In this paper we describe work enabling Fortran for AMD Xilinx FPGAs by connecting the LLVM Flang front end to AMD Xilinx's LLVM back end. This enables programmers to use Fortran as a first-class language for programming FPGAs, and as we demonstrate enjoy all the tuning and optimisation opportunities that HLS C++ provides. Furthermore, we demonstrate that certain language features of Fortran make it especially beneficial for programming FPGAs compared to C++. Safety-critical systems such as those in automotive, avionics and space, require appropriate safety measures to avoid silent data corruption upon random hardware errors such as those caused by radiation and other types of electromagnetic interference. Those safety measures must be able to prevent faults from causing the so-called common cause failures (CCFs), which occur when a fault produces identical errors in redundant elements so that comparison fails to detect the errors and a failure arises. The usual solution to avoid CCFs in CPU cores is using lockstep cores, so that two cores execute the same flow of instructions, but with some time staggering so that their state is never identical and faults can only lead to different errors, which are then detectable by means of comparison. We investigate the observed muon deficit in air shower simulations when compared to ultrahigh-energy cosmic ray (UHECR) data. Gleaned from the observed enhancement of strangeness production in ALICE data, the associated $\pi \leftrightarrow K$ swap is taken as a cornerstone to resolve the muon puzzle via its corresponding impact on the shower evolution. We develop a phenomenological model in terms of the $\pi \leftrightarrow K$ swapping probability $F_s$. We provide a parametrization of $F_s (E^{\rm (proj)}, \eta)$ that can accommodate the UHECR data, where $E^{\rm (proj)}$ is the projectile energy and $\eta$ the pseudorapidity. We also explore a future game plan for model improvement using the colossal amount of data to be collected by LHC neutrino detectors at the Forward Physics Facility (FPF). Labeled data are critical to modern machine learning applications, but obtaining labels can be expensive. To mitigate this cost, machine learning methods, such as transfer learning, semi-supervised learning and active learning, aim to be label-efficient: achieving high predictive performance from relatively few labeled examples. While obtaining the best label-efficiency in practice often requires combinations of these techniques, existing benchmark and evaluation frameworks do not capture a concerted combination of all such techniques. This paper addresses this deficiency by introducing LabelBench, a new computationally-efficient framework for joint evaluation of multiple label-efficient learning techniques. As an application of LabelBench, we introduce a novel benchmark of state-of-the-art active learning methods in combination with semi-supervised learning for fine-tuning pretrained vision transformers. Our benchmark demonstrates better label-efficiencies than previously reported in active learning. LabelBench's modular codebase is open-sourced for the broader community to contribute label-efficient learning methods and benchmarks. Modern machine learning models deployed in the wild can encounter both covariate and semantic shifts, giving rise to the problems of out-of-distribution (OOD) generalization and OOD detection respectively. While both problems have received significant research attention lately, they have been pursued independently. This may not be surprising, since the two tasks have seemingly conflicting goals. This paper provides a new unified approach that is capable of simultaneously generalizing to covariate shifts while robustly detecting semantic shifts. We propose a margin-based learning framework that exploits freely available unlabeled data in the wild that captures the environmental test-time OOD distributions under both covariate and semantic shifts. We show both empirically and theoretically that the proposed margin constraint is the key to achieving both OOD generalization and detection. Extensive experiments show the superiority of our framework, outperforming competitive baselines that specialize in either OOD generalization or OOD detection. We introduce M$^2$Hub, a toolkit for advancing machine learning in materials discovery. Machine learning has achieved remarkable progress in modeling molecular structures, especially biomolecules for drug discovery. However, the development of machine learning approaches for modeling materials structures lag behind, which is partly due to the lack of an integrated platform that enables access to diverse tasks for materials discovery. To bridge this gap, M$^2$Hub will enable easy access to materials discovery tasks, datasets, machine learning methods, evaluations, and benchmark results that cover the entire workflow. Specifically, the first release of M$^2$Hub focuses on three key stages in materials discovery: virtual screening, inverse design, and molecular simulation, including 9 datasets that covers 6 types of materials with 56 tasks across 8 types of material properties. We further provide 2 synthetic datasets for the purpose of generative tasks on materials. In addition to random data splits, we also provide 3 additional data partitions to reflect the real-world materials discovery scenarios. State-of-the-art machine learning methods (including those are suitable for materials structures but never compared in the literature) are benchmarked on representative tasks. Serverless technologies, also known as FaaS (Function as a Service), are promoted as solutions that provide dynamic scalability, speed of development, cost-per-consumption model, and the ability to focus on the code while taking attention away from the infrastructure that is managed by the vendor. A microservices architecture is defined by the interaction and management of the application state by several independent services, each with a well-defined domain. When implementing software architectures based on microservices, there are several decisions to take about the technologies and the possibility of adopting Serverless. In this study, we implement 9 prototypes of the same microservice application using different technologies. Some architectural decisions and their impact on the performance and cost of the result obtained are analysed. We use Amazon Web Services and start with an application that uses a more traditional deployment environment (Kubernetes) and migration to a serverless architecture is performed by combining and analysing the impact (both cost and performance) of the use of different technologies such as AWS ECS Fargate, AWS Lambda, DynamoDB or DocumentDB., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables

We study the energy loss of excited monopolium in an atomic medium. We perform a classical calculation in line with a similar calculation performed for charged particles which leads in the non relativistic limit to the Bethe-Bloch formula except for the density dependence of the medium, which we do not consider in this paper. Our result shows that for maximally deformed Rydberg states the ionization of monopolium in a light atomic medium is similar to that of light ions., Comment: 13 pages and 10 figures

This special session paper introduces the Horizon Europe NEUROPULS project, which targets the development of secure and energy-efficient RISC-V interfaced neuromorphic accelerators using augmented silicon photonics technology. Our approach aims to develop an augmented silicon photonics platform, an FPGA-powered RISC-V-connected computing platform, and a complete simulation platform to demonstrate the neuromorphic accelerator capabilities. In particular, their main advantages and limitations will be addressed concerning the underpinning technology for each platform. Then, we will discuss three targeted use cases for edge-computing applications: Global National Satellite System (GNSS) anti-jamming, autonomous driving, and anomaly detection in edge devices. Vitamin-V is a project funded under the Horizon Europe program for the period 2023-2025. The project aims to create a complete open-source software stack for RISC-V that can be used for cloud services. This software stack is intended to have the same level of performance as the x86 architecture, which is currently dominant in the cloud computing industry. In addition, the project aims to create a powerful virtual execution environment that can be used for software development, validation, verification, and testing. The virtual environment will consider the relevant RISC-V ISA extensions required for cloud deployment. Commercial cloud systems use hardware features currently unavailable in RISC-V virtual environments, including virtualization, cryptography, and vectorization. To address this, Vitamin-V will support these features in three virtual environments: QEMU, gem5, and cloud-FPGA prototype platforms. The project will focus on providing support for EPI-based RISC-V designs for both the main CPUs and cloud-important accelerators, such as memory compression. The project will add the compiler (LLVM-based) and toolchain support for the ISA extensions. Moreover, Vitamin-V will develop novel approaches for validating, verifying, and testing software trustworthiness. This paper focuses on the plans and visions that the Vitamin-V project has to support validation, verification, and testing for cloud applications, particularly emphasizing the hardware support that will be provided.

The accuracy of camera-based object detection (CBOD) built upon deep learning is often evaluated against the real objects in frames only. However, such simplistic evaluation ignores the fact that many unimportant objects are small, distant, or background, and hence, their misdetections have less impact than those for closer, larger, and foreground objects in domains such as autonomous driving. Moreover, sporadic misdetections are irrelevant since confidence on detections is typically averaged across consecutive frames, and detection devices (e.g. cameras, LiDARs) are often redundant, thus providing fault tolerance. This paper exploits such intrinsic fault tolerance of the CBOD process, and assesses in an automotive case study to what extent CBOD can tolerate approximation coming from multiple sources such as lower precision arithmetic, approximate arithmetic units, and even random faults due to, for instance, low voltage operation. We show that the accuracy impact of those sources of approximation is within 1% of the baseline even when considering the three approximate domains simultaneously, and hence, multiple sources of approximation can be exploited to build highly efficient accelerators for CBOD in cars.

FPGAs are an attractive type of accelerator for all-purpose HPC computing systems due to the possibility of deploying tailored hardware on demand. However, the common tools for programming and operating FPGAs are still complex to use, especially in scenarios where diverse types of tasks should be dynamically executed. In this work we present a programming abstraction with a simple interface that internally leverages High-Level Synthesis, Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration and synchronisation mechanisms to use an FPGA as a multi-tasking server with preemptive scheduling and priority queues. This leads to an improved use of the FPGA resources, allowing the execution of several different kernels concurrently and deploying the most urgent ones as fast as possible. The results of our experimental study show that our approach incurs only a 10% overhead in the worst case when using two reconfigurable regions, whilst providing a significant performance improvement of at least 24% over the traditional full reconfiguration approach., Comment: Article preprint. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2209.04410
