2. Partial Shading Detection and Smooth Maximum Power Point Tracking of PV Arrays under PSC

Abstract

One of the most important issues in the operation of a photovoltaic (PV) system is extracting maximum power from the PV array, especially in partial shading condition (PSC). Under PSC, P-V characteristic of PV arrays will have multiple peak points, only one of which is global maximum. Conventional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) methods are not able to extract maximum power in this condition. In this paper, a novel two-stage MPPT method is presented to overcome this drawback. In the first stage, a method is proposed to determine the occurrence of PSC, and in the second stage, using a new algorithm that is based on ramp change of the duty cycle and continuous sampling from the P-V characteristic of the array, global maximum power point of array is reached. P&O algorithm is then re-activated to trace small changes of the new MPP. Open loop operation of the proposed method makes its implementation cheap and simple. The method is robust in the face of changing environmental conditions and array characteristics, and has minimum negative impact on the connected power system. Abstract

P-V characteristic of photovoltaic (PV) arrays under partially shaded conditions (PSC) has multiple peaks, and conventional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms may fail to track the global maximum power point (GMPP) because of their insufficient intelligence in discriminating the local and global peaks. This paper proposes a novel fast MPPT method to achieve GMPP of PV array under all PSCs. The proposed method reduces the number of required samples and increases the speed of GMPP tracking based on comprehensive study of I-V and P-V characteristics of PV array. Performance of the proposed method has been evaluated in simulations of different PSCs. Also, its performance has been compared with two selected methods in the literature through simulations. 6. Small-Signal Analysis and Enhanced Control of Large-Scale PV-Penetrated Power Systems From the Electromechanical Oscillations Point of View

Abstract

High penetration of photovoltaic (PV) plants in power systems may reduce the damping of electromechanical (EM) oscillatory modes. Implementing auxiliary controllers in the PV plant control system is a well-known technique that can improve the damping of these oscillations. Active power modulation (APM) is an effective auxiliary-control-based method that requires an energy source. Previous works have proposed employing an external energy storage system (ESS) as the energy source of the APM or deloading the PV plant by moving away from its maximum power point (MPP) characteristic. However, installing ESSs is expensive, and distancing from the MPP is not economical. By focusing on the dc-side components of large-scale PV plants, this study proposes an APM method that does not need any ESSs or deloading. Instead, this article first evaluates the available amount of stored energy in the dc-link capacitors of large-scale PV plant inverters and then proposes a novel controller to employ this energy for the APM. Furthermore, impacts of large-scale PV plant penetration levels with and without the proposed controller as well as the PV unit numbers and the power system parameters and operating point on the damping ratio of EM modes and the performance of the proposed controller with various feedback signal types and measurement delays are investigated.

Abstract

Ship motions affect the propulsion system, which causes fluctuations in the power system. Mutually, the power system variations impact the ship velocity by generating speed changes in the propeller. Therefore, interconnecting the ship hydrodynamic and power system has paramount importance in designing and analysing an all‐electric ship (AES). The lack of an integrated model that can be evaluated in various operating conditions, such as manoeuvring, is evident. This paper explores the required perceptions for the power system and hydrodynamic analysis of an AES. Then, an integrated theoretical model comprising both the ship motion and power system is proposed. In addition to providing an accurate model for the ship in varying situations, this study demonstrates that the ship speed estimation during a ship route change differs from when the interconnections are overlooked. In the light of this determination, a straightforward enhancement for the ship speed control system is proposed. The effects of this modification on the ship power system are explored using the proposed model. The developed model is examined in different scenarios, and its advantages are discussed. 34. Modified virtual inertial controller for prudential participation of DFIG‐based wind turbines in power system frequency regulation.

Abstract

This study proposes a modified virtual inertial control (MVIC) scheme for doubly‐fed induction generator (DFIG)‐based wind turbines (WTs), which both improves the frequency response of these renewable resources and enhances the power system oscillation damping capabilities. It is shown that the proposed control structure enables the WT to participate prudentially in system frequency regulation, which means the amount of WT kinetic energy released to the grid and its participation in system frequency support is alleviated as its stored energy decreases. The proposed control strategy is introduced conceptually, and its performance is verified analytically. Effects of wind speed variations on the small‐signal stability of DFIG WTs equipped with the proposed MVIC is investigated, as well. For these purposes, the system characteristic equation and its damping ratio, as well as the transfer function between the wind speed and the wind turbine rotor speed are derived and analysed. Eventually, time‐domain simulation results and modal analysis verify the performance of the proposed method and demonstrate its superiority as compared to the conventional virtual inertial controllers.
