1. The Effect of Non-Intellective Competencies and Academic Performance on School Satisfaction

Abstract

(1) Background: To improve academic performance and prevent dropouts, many studies have investigated the effects of non-intellective competencies on performance, and the effects of performance on school satisfaction. The aim of this study was to investigate the direct role of both non-intellective competencies and performance on school satisfaction at the same time. (2) Methods: The study involved 731 Italian students, attending three different high schools, who responded to the H-Comp Scale, a questionnaire assessing twelve different aspects of students' skills, attitudes and motivations over the study, and the H-Sat Scale, a questionnaire assessing five different areas of school satisfaction. (3) Results: We found a strong role of non-intellective competencies on school satisfaction and a marginal role of academic performance, gender and the attended class, which reduced as students' seniority increased. (4) Conclusions: This study showed that school satisfaction depends on students' self-perception in terms of their study competencies and the motivations possessed more than their sole performance, suggesting that this helps students to improve their non-intellective competencies in order to increase their performance and reduce the risk of dropouts, both directly and indirectly, through increasing their school satisfaction.

3. Courage in Childhood: Classifying the Actions of Courage Performed by Elementary School Students

Abstract

The study is aimed at exploring, through lexical analysis, the courageous actions performed by elementary school students. Five hundred ninety-two Italian children were interviewed about the most courageous action that they had ever performed during their life. Exploratory cluster analysis with Iramuteq was run to analyse the children's answers and four clusters were found. The first cluster referred to actions performed with physical risks (physical courage). The second cluster referred to actions to protect or defend others, especially peers, in difficult and unpleasant social situations (moral courage). The third cluster referred to courageous actions in dealing with threats concerning personal well-being (psychological courage) and the fourth cluster referred to physically and psychologically courageous actions. Gender differences were found for the first and third cluster with girls reporting more physical courage and boys more psychological courage. The study has important implications for research and practice.

4. Adaptation and Validation of the Academic Stress Scale in the Italian Context: Latent Structure, Reliability, and Concurrent Validity.

Abstract

The present study describes the Italian adaptation of the Academic Stressors Scale (E-CEA) of the Academic Stress Questionnaire, evaluating the relationships with general and domain-specific well-being and verifying the significant predictors and the amount of variance explained by the "non-intellective" academic competencies on the scores of student stress dimensions. The participants are 1305 students from all the different degree courses. The Italian version of the E-CEA, composed of 38 items, showed good psychometric properties both in terms of reliability and factorial structure with good fit indices. The 6 sub-dimensions, for the most part overlapping with those of the original version of the instrument, show good construct and concurrent validity as negative relationships were found with general and domain-specific well-being indices. With regard to the regressions performed, several dimensions of "non-intellective" academic competencies turned out to be significant predictors (with negative effect) with respect to the stress levels perceived in the academic environment by university students: in particular, time organization, emotional control, the ability to relate to professors and intrinsic motivation could decrease stress levels, while dedication to study and the tendency to involve one's parents in one's university career seemed to increase stress levels. Regarding the practical implications of the results, suggestions are provided in supporting the career paths of students to reduce risk factors for stress development and to promote academic well-being. Abstract

The concerned research had the aim to deeply examine the current state of the general theory of family law, according to an approach which sees it belonging to the category of social rights, by means of the study of the protection of the main family rights, considered in conjunction with the adult person in custody, and of the way this discipline has been modified over time, due to social changes and thanks to the science of legal psychology. This paper highlights the theories which recognize the private law as a legal matter more and more mindful of social relationships and more and more looking after the consequences that different private-law institutes unavoidably produce inside the relationships established among the associates. The family law is no longer on the border between private and public law, but rather in the social law category, understood as a third genus and as a new shared legal tool between private and public law. The issue of the general theory of family law applied to prison law has been dealt purely with psycho-legal tools. Indeed, the focal point of this work is precisely the analysis of the relationships which tie all the individuals involved inside the detention context and all different profiles, to protect the same relationships according to the references placed before by the general theory of family law.

Abstract

The research project focuses on early school-leaving and well-being promotion in school environment through peer intervention training. It provides a theoretical framework of early school-leaving by showing the difficulties encountered in the literature (Morrow, 1986; Besozzi, 1993; Morgagni, 1998; Liverta Sempio, 1999; Colombo, 2010) to attribute unambiguous definitions. Through a historical overview from the nineties up to now, we retrace the main steps that have led to the evolution of the issue and the policies adopted, nationally and internationally, to face it. The work takes the form of an action-research carried out in the school year 2014/2015 in the middle school’s first grade classes at the Comprehensive Institut Li Punti in Sassari (Italy). Starting from the representations of teachers, parents and students, we try to create, facilitate and observe a process of improvement through a training program, addressed to teachers and pupils. It is inspired by the model of the Life skills (WHO, 1993; Boda, 2001; Boda, Mosiello, 2005; Patrizi Bussu, 2010; Bussu, 2011) through the use of peer education (Boda, 2001; D'Angiò, Recco, Cinquegrana, 2006; Franzese, 2009) and the peace circle (Boyes-Watson, 2005; Pranis,2005; Boyes-Watson, Pranis, 2015), as a restorative practice aimed at creating a positive environment. The research methodology is mix-method. The instruments used are: interviews, focus groups, observation and questionnaires.

Abstract

This project aims to assist the public in an “Socratic” action that will lead them to discover and support the social, relational and affective potential they already own, helping them to discover and enhance their “Relational Goods”. The project is characterized by elements of originality, for the absence of similar experiences in this field. This fact has led the project team to anticipate the future, abandoning the desire and / or the willingness to apply “reassuring schemes” (Formez-Strumenti 38, 2007). Within this conceptual framework was born on the research project that is facing uncertainty and to leave the safety of projects structured by the desire to leverage intangible instances and not just on those measurable. The goal is to use the building as a “unit” for a trial of interpersonal relationships based on the economic and social theory of “Relational Goods”, which sees modern man becoming more and more unhappy because reduced to an isolated consumer monad.
