Search

An important consequence of human-induced climate change emerges through extreme weather events. The impact of extreme weather events is quantified in some parts of the globe, but it remains underestimated in several countries. In this work we first quantify the extreme temperature and precipitation events in Brazil using data from the Brazilian Institute of Meteorology, which includes 634 meteorological stations that have worked intermittently since 1961. We show that the anomaly in temperature has increased by more than 1{\deg}C in the last 60 years and that extreme events are heterogeneously distributed in the country. In terms of precipitation, our analyses show that it is getting drier in the Northwest region of Brazil while excessive precipitation events are increasing in the South, in agreement with previous works. We then use data from S2iD, an official database that registers disasters in Brazil to estimate their impact in terms of human damage and financial costs in the last ten years. The analysis shows that the drought extreme events are the most expensive, several of them reaching a cost of over a billion USD. Although we are not able to attribute the natural disasters registered in one database to the extreme weather events identified using the meteorological data, we discuss the possible correlations between them. Finally, we present a proposal of using extreme value theory to estimate the probability of having severe extreme events of precipitation in locations where there are already some natural disasters.

Detecting monotonic changes in heart rate (HR) is crucial for early identification of cardiac conditions and health management. This is particularly important for dementia patients, where HR trends can signal stress or agitation. Developing wearable technologies that can perform always-on monitoring of HRs is essential to effectively detect slow changes over extended periods of time. However, designing compact electronic circuits that can monitor and process bio-signals continuously, and that can operate in a low-power regime to ensure long-lasting performance, is still an open challenge. Neuromorphic technology offers an energy-efficient solution for real-time health monitoring. We propose a neuromorphic implementation of a Neural State Machine (NSM) network to encode different health states and switch between them based on the input stimuli. Our focus is on detecting monotonic state switches in electrocardiogram data to identify progressive HR increases. This innovative approach promises significant advancements in continuous health monitoring and management.

Overcoming the impact of selfish behavior of rational players in multiagent systems is a fundamental problem in game theory. Without any intervention from a central agent, strategic users take actions in order to maximize their personal utility, which can lead to extremely inefficient overall system performance, often indicated by a high Price of Anarchy. Recent work (Lin et al. 2021) investigated and formalized yet another undesirable behavior of rational agents, that of avoiding freely available information about the game for selfish reasons, leading to worse social outcomes. A central planner can significantly mitigate these issues by injecting a subsidy to reduce certain costs associated with the system and obtain net gains in the system performance. Crucially, the planner needs to determine how to allocate this subsidy effectively. We formally show that designing subsidies that perfectly optimize the social good, in terms of minimizing the Price of Anarchy or preventing the information avoidance behavior, is computationally hard under standard complexity theoretic assumptions. On the positive side, we show that we can learn provably good values of subsidy in repeated games coming from the same domain. This data-driven subsidy design approach avoids solving computationally hard problems for unseen games by learning over polynomially many games. We also show that optimal subsidy can be learned with no-regret given an online sequence of games, under mild assumptions on the cost matrix. Tables are crucial containers of information, but understanding their meaning may be challenging. Indeed, recently, there has been a focus on Semantic Table Interpretation (STI), i.e., the task that involves the semantic annotation of tabular data to disambiguate their meaning. Over the years, there has been a surge in interest in data-driven approaches based on deep learning that have increasingly been combined with heuristic-based approaches. In the last period, the advent of Large Language Models (LLMs) has led to a new category of approaches for table annotation. The interest in this research field, characterised by multiple challenges, has led to a proliferation of approaches employing different techniques. However, these approaches have not been consistently evaluated on a common ground, making evaluation and comparison difficult. This work proposes an extensive evaluation of four state-of-the-art (SOTA) approaches - Alligator (formerly s-elBat), Dagobah, TURL, and TableLlama; the first two belong to the family of heuristic-based algorithms, while the others are respectively encoder-only and decoder-only LLMs. The primary objective is to measure the ability of these approaches to solve the entity disambiguation task, with the ultimate aim of charting new research paths in the field.

The projected sensitivity of the effective electron neutrino-mass measurement with the KATRIN experiment is below 0.3 eV (90 % CL) after five years of data acquisition. The sensitivity is affected by the increased rate of the background electrons from KATRIN's main spectrometer. A special shifted-analysing-plane (SAP) configuration was developed to reduce this background by a factor of two. The complex layout of electromagnetic fields in the SAP configuration requires a robust method of estimating these fields. We present in this paper a dedicated calibration measurement of the fields using conversion electrons of gaseous $^\mathrm{83m}$Kr, which enables the neutrino-mass measurements in the SAP configuration., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

Despite its long-standing popularity and fundamental role in an operating system, the Unix shell has rarely been a subject of academic research. In particular, regardless of the significant progress in compiler testing, there has been hardly any work applying automated testing techniques to detect faults and vulnerabilities in shell interpreters. To address this important shortcoming, we present ShellFuzzer: a technique to test Unix shell interpreters by automatically generating a large number of shell scripts. ShellFuzzer combines grammar-based generation with selected random mutations, so as to produce a diverse range of shell programs with predictable characteristics (e.g., valid according to the language standard, and free from destructive behavior). In our experimental evaluation, ShellFuzzer generated shell programs that exposed 8 previously unknown issues that affected a recent version of the mksh POSIX-compliant shell; the shell maintainers confirmed 7 of these issues, and addressed them in the latest revisions of the shell's open-source implementation.

We present new JWST/NIRSpec IFU observations of the J1000+0234 system at $z=4.54$, the dense core of a galaxy protocluster hosting a massive, dusty star forming galaxy (DSFG) with a low luminosity radio counterpart. The new data reveals two extended, high equivalent width (EW$_0 > 1000$ {\AA}) nebulae at each side of the DSFG disk along its minor axis (namely O3-N and O3-S). On one hand, O3-N's spectrum shows a prominent FWHM $\sim1300$ km s$^{-1}$ broad and blueshifted component, suggesting an outflow origin. On the other hand, O3-S stretches over parsec and has a velocity gradient that spans $800$ km s$^{-1}$ but no evidence of a broad component. Both sources, however, seem to be powered at least partially by an active galactic nucleus (AGN), so we classify them as extended emission-line regions (EELRs). The strongest evidence comes from the detection of the high-ionization [Ne V] $\lambda3427$ line toward O3-N, which paired with the non-detection of hard X-rays implies an obscuring column density above the Compton-thick regime. In O3-S, the [Ne V] line is not detected, but we measure a He II well above the expectation for star formation. We interpret this as O3-S being externally irradiated by the AGN, akin to the famous Hanny's Voorwerp object in the local Universe. In addition, more classical line ratio diagnostics (e.g. [O III]/H$\beta$ vs [N II]/H$\alpha$) put the DSFG itself in the AGN region of the diagrams, and hence the most probable host of the AGN. Context. Although dust in galaxies represents only a few percent of the total baryonic mass, it plays a crucial role in the physical processes occurring in galaxies. Studying the dust content of galaxies, particularly at high$-z$, is therefore crucial to understand the link between dust production, obscured star formation and the build-up of galaxy stellar mass. Aims. To study the dust properties (mass and temperature) of the largest Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA)-selected sample of star-forming galaxies available from the archive (A$^3$COSMOS) and derive the dust mass function and dust mass density of galaxies from $z=0.5\,-\,6$. Methods. We performed spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting with the CIGALE code to constrain the dust mass and temperature of the A$^3$COSMOS galaxy sample, thanks to the UV-to-near-infrared photometric coverage of each galaxies combined with the ALMA (and Herschel when available) coverage of the Rayleigh-Jeans tail of their dust-continuum emission. We then computed and fitted the dust mass function by combining the A$^3$COSMOS and state-of-the-art {\it Herschel} samples, in order to obtain the best estimate of the integrated dust mass density up to $z \sim 6$. Results. Galaxies in \a3 have dust masses between $\sim 10^8$ and $\sim 10^{9.5}$ M$_{\odot}$. From the SED fitting, we were also able to derive a dust temperature, finding that the distribution of the dust temperature peaks at $\sim 30-35$K. The dust mass function at $z=0.5\,-\,6$ evolves with an increase of $M^*$ and decrease of the number density ($\Phi ^*$) and is in good agreement with literature estimates. The dust mass density shows a smooth decrease in its evolution from $z \sim 0.5$ to $z \sim 6$, which is steeper than what is found by models at $z \gtrsim 2$., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication on A&A

We revisit the thermodynamic properties of black holes with warped AdS$_3$ asymptotics in topologically massive gravity. The holographically dual theory, often referred to as warped CFT$_2$, exhibits a single copy of the Virasoro-Kac-Moody algebra. Consequently, the asymptotic density of states in the right-moving sector is described by the charged Cardy formula that we review in detail. By defining specific linear combinations of the gravitational thermodynamic potentials, we are able to present the gravitational left- and right-moving on-shell actions directly in the grand-canonical ensemble. This allows us to demonstrate that, apart from the charged Cardy behavior in the right-moving sector, the dual field theory exhibits an additional frozen left-moving state giving rise to non-zero entropy contribution. Our findings elucidate the nature of warped CFTs and reveal subtle yet fundamental differences from the existing literature., Comment: 23 pages

In the realm of battery charging, several complex aspects demand meticulous attention, including thermal management, capacity degradation, and the need for rapid charging while maintaining safety and battery lifespan. By employing the imitation learning paradigm, this manuscript introduces an innovative solution to confront the inherent challenges often associated with conventional predictive control strategies for constrained battery charging. A significant contribution of this study lies in the adaptation of the Dataset Aggregation (DAGGER) algorithm to address scenarios where battery parameters are uncertain, and internal states are unobservable. We compute correlation functions of local operator insertions on the 1/2 BPS Wilson lines of N=4 Chern-Simons-matter theories in 3 dimensions. We study the algebra preserved by the defect CFT supported on the line, identify the superdisplacement multiplet and discuss some of its weak-coupling realizations. By employing a superspace description, we present the 4-point functions of the superdisplacement and show how they are determined by functions of cross-ratios. The fact that neutrinos carry a non-vanishing rest mass is evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model of elementary particles. Their absolute mass bears important relevance from particle physics to cosmology. In this work, we report on the search for the effective electron antineutrino mass with the KATRIN experiment. KATRIN performs precision spectroscopy of the tritium $\beta$-decay close to the kinematic endpoint. Based on the first five neutrino-mass measurement campaigns, we derive a best-fit value of $m_\nu^{2} = {-0.14^{+0.13}_{-0.15}}~\mathrm{eV^2}$, resulting in an upper limit of $m_\nu < {0.45}~\mathrm{eV}$ at 90 % confidence level. With six times the statistics of previous data sets, amounting to 36 million electrons collected in 259 measurement days, a substantial reduction of the background level and improved systematic uncertainties, this result tightens KATRIN's previous bound by a factor of almost two., Comment: 61 pages, 20 figures, 2 tables

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a detector array comprised by 988 5$\;$cm$\times$5$\;$cm$\times$5$\;$cm TeO$_2$ crystals held below 20 mK, primarily searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay in $^{130}$Te. Unprecedented in size amongst cryogenic calorimetric experiments, CUORE provides a promising setting for the study of exotic through-going particles. Using the first tonne-year of CUORE's exposure, we perform a search for hypothesized fractionally charged particles (FCPs), which are well-motivated by various Standard Model extensions and would have suppressed interactions with matter. No excess of FCP candidate tracks is observed over background, setting leading limits on the underground FCP flux with charges between $e/24-e/5$ at 90\% confidence level. This work focuses on minimum-time low-thrust orbit transfers from a prescribed low Earth orbit to a specified low lunar orbit. The well-established indirect formulation of minimum-time orbit transfers is extended to a multibody dynamical framework, with initial and final orbits around two distinct primaries. To do this, different representations, useful for describing orbit dynamics, are introduced, i.e., modified equinoctial elements (MEE) and Cartesian coordinates (CC). Use of two sets of MEE, relative to either Earth or Moon, allows simple writing of the boundary conditions about the two celestial bodies, but requires the formulation of a multiple-arc trajectory optimization problem, including two legs: (a) geocentric leg and (b) selenocentric leg. In the numerical solution process, the transition between the two MEE representations uses CC, which play the role of convenient intermediate, matching variables. The multiple-arc formulation at hand leads to identifying a set of intermediate necessary conditions for optimality, at the transition between the two legs. This research proves that a closed-form solution to these intermediate conditions exists, leveraging implicit costate transformation. As a result, the parameter set for an indirect algorithm retains the reduced size of the typical set associated with a single-arc optimization problem. The indirect heuristic technique, based on the joint use of the necessary conditions and a heuristic algorithm (i.e., differential evolution in this study) is proposed as the numerical solution method, together with the definition of a layered fitness function, aimed at facilitating convergence. The Gateway will represent a primary space system useful for the Artemis program, Earth-Moon transportation, and deep space exploration. It is expected to serve as a staging location on the way to the lunar surface. This study focuses on low-thrust transfer dynamics, from the Near-Rectilinear Halo Orbit traveled by Gateway to a specified Low-altitude Lunar Orbit (LLO). This research addresses: (i) determination of the minimum-time low-thrust trajectory and (ii) design, implementation, and testing of a guidance and control architecture, for a space vehicle that travels from Gateway to LLO. Orbit dynamics is described in terms of modified equinoctial elements, in the context of a high-fidelity ephemeris model. The minimum-time trajectory from Gateway to a specified lunar orbit is detected through an indirect heuristic approach, which uses the analytical conditions arising in optimal control theory in conjunction with a heuristic technique. However, future missions will pursue a growing level of autonomy, and this circumstance implies the mandatory design of an efficient feedback guidance scheme, capable of compensating for nonnominal flight conditions. This research proposes nonlinear orbit control as a viable option for autonomous explicit guidance of low-thrust transfers from Gateway to LLO. This approach allows defining a feedback law that enjoys quasi-global stability properties without requiring any offline reference trajectory. The overall spacecraft dynamics is modeled including attitude control and actuation. The latter is demanded to an array of reaction wheels, arranged in a pyramidal configuration. Guidance, attitude control, and actuation are implemented in an iterative scheme. We present the model we developed to reconstruct the CUORE radioactive background based on the analysis of an experimental exposure of 1038.4 kg yr. The data reconstruction relies on a simultaneous Bayesian fit applied to energy spectra over a broad energy range. The high granularity of the CUORE detector, together with the large exposure and extended stable operations, allow for an in-depth exploration of both spatial and time dependence of backgrounds. We achieve high sensitivity to both bulk and surface activities of the materials of the setup, detecting levels as low as 10 nBq kg$^{-1}$ and 0.1 nBq cm$^{-2}$, respectively. We compare the contamination levels we extract from the background model with prior radio-assay data, which informs future background risk mitigation strategies. The results of this background model play a crucial role in constructing the background budget for the CUPID experiment as it will exploit the same CUORE infrastructure.

The current experiments searching for neutrinoless double-$\beta$ ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay also collect large statistics of Standard Model allowed two-neutrino double-$\beta$ ($2\nu\beta\beta$) decay events. These can be used to search for Beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics via $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay spectral distortions. $^{100}$Mo has a natural advantage due to its relatively short half-life, allowing higher $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay statistics at equal exposures compared to the other isotopes. We demonstrate the potential of the dual read-out bolometric technique exploiting a $^{100}$Mo exposure of 1.47 kg $\times$ y, acquired in the CUPID-Mo experiment at the Modane underground laboratory (France). We set limits on $0\nu\beta\beta$ decays with the emission of one or more Majorons, on $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay with Lorentz violation, and $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay with a sterile neutrino emission. In this analysis, we investigate the systematic uncertainty induced by modeling the $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay spectral shape parameterized through an improved model, an effect never considered before. This work motivates searches for BSM processes in the upcoming CUPID experiment, which will collect the largest amount of $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay events among the next-generation experiments.

The path-integral technique in quantum mechanics provides an intuitive framework for comprehending particle propagation and scattering. Calculating the propagator for the Aharonov-Bohm potential fits into the range of potentials in multiply-connected spaces, with the propagator represented through a series expansion. In this paper, we analyze the Schr\"odinger evolution of superoscillations, showing the supershift properties of the solution to the Schr\"odinger equation for this potential. Our proof is based on the continuity of particular infinite order differential operators acting on spaces of entire functions.

Active solids are a large class of materials, including both living soft tissues and artificial matter, that share the ability to undergo strain even in absence of external loads. While in engineered materials the actuation is typically designed a priori, in natural materials it is an unknown of the problem. In such a framework, the identification of inactive regions in active materials is of particular interest. An example of paramount relevance is cardiac mechanics and the assessment of regions of the cardiac muscle with impaired contractility. The impossibility to measure the local active forces directly suggests us to develop a novel methodology exploiting kinematic data from clinical images by a variational approach to reconstruct the local contractility of the cardiac muscle. By finding the stationary points of a suitable cost functional we recover the contractility map of the muscle. Numerical experiments, including severe conditions with added noise to model uncertainties, and data knowledge limited to the boundary, demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. Unlike other methods, we provide a spatially continuous recovery of the contractility map without compromising the computational efficiency., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures

The matter-antimatter asymmetry underlines the incompleteness of the current understanding of particle physics. Neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu \beta\beta$) decay may help explain this asymmetry, while unveiling the Majorana nature of the neutrino. The CUORE experiment searches for $0\nu \beta\beta$ decay of $^{130}$Te using a tonne-scale cryogenic calorimeter operated at milli-kelvin temperatures. We report no evidence for $0\nu \beta\beta$ decay and place a lower limit on the half-life of T$_{1/2}$ $>$ 3.8 $\times$ 10$^{25}$ years (90% C.I.) with over 2 tonne$\cdot$year TeO$_2$ exposure. The tools and techniques developed for this result and the 5 year stable operation of nearly 1000 detectors demonstrate the infrastructure for a next-generation experiment capable of searching for $0\nu \beta\beta$ decay across multiple isotopes.

It has been recently shown for a wide range of black hole solutions in 4 and 5 dimensions that it is useful to reorganize the conventional thermodynamics on the inner and outer horizons in terms of left- and right-moving variables. The insight of arXiv:2310.13437 regarding the split of variables was loosely inspired by the example of the BTZ black hole and the corresponding dual CFT$_2$ thermodynamics governed by the Cardy formula. Here we revisit the BTZ case and its generalizations in 3d gravity theories with higher derivative corrections, and show formally the applicability of the newly defined variables and their direct relation to the Cardy formula, which is not a priori guaranteed., Comment: 5 pages

Measurements of the size of dust continuum emission are an important tool for constraining the spatial extent of star formation and hence the build-up of stellar mass. Compact dust emission has generally been observed at Cosmic Noon (z~2-3). However, at earlier epochs, toward the end of the Reionization (z~4-6), only the sizes of a handful of IR-bright galaxies have been measured. In this work, we derive the dust emission sizes of main-sequence galaxies at z~5 from the ALPINE survey. We measure the dust effective radius r_e,FIR in the uv-plane in Band 7 of ALMA for seven ALPINE galaxies with resolved emission and we compare it with rest-frame UV and [CII]158$\mu$m measurements. We study the r_e,FIR-L_IR scaling relation by considering our dust size measurements and all the data in literature at z~4-6. Finally, we compare our size measurements with predictions from simulations. The dust emission in the selected ALPINE galaxies is rather extended (r_e,FIR~1.5-3 kpc), similar to [CII]158 um but a factor of ~2 larger than the rest-frame UV emission. Putting together all the measurements at z~5, spanning 2 decades in luminosity from L_IR ~ 10^11 L_sun to L_IR ~ 10^13 L_sun, the data highlight a steeply increasing trend of the r_e,FIR-L_IR relation at L_IR< 10^12 L_sun, followed by a downturn and a decreasing trend at brighter luminosities. Finally, simulations that extend up to the stellar masses of the ALPINE galaxies considered in the present work predict a sub-set of galaxies (~25% at 10^10 M_sun < M_star < 10^11 M_sun) with sizes as large as those measured., Comment: 8 pages, Accepted by A&A

We present new optical GTC/MEGARA seeing-limited (0.9") integral-field observations of NGC 5506, together with ALMA observations of the CO(3-2) transition at a 0.2" (25 pc) resolution. NGC 5506 is a luminous (bolometric luminosity of $\sim 10^{44}$ erg/s) nearby (26 Mpc) Seyfert galaxy, part of the Galaxy Activity, Torus, and Outflow Survey (GATOS). We modelled the CO(3-2) kinematics with 3D-Barolo, revealing a rotating and outflowing cold gas ring within the central 1.2 kpc. We derived an integrated cold molecular gas mass outflow rate for the ring of 8 M$_{\odot}$/yr. We fitted the optical emission lines with a maximum of two Gaussian components to separate rotation from non-circular motions. We detected high [OIII]$\lambda$5007 projected velocities (up to 1000 km/s) at the active galactic nucleus (AGN) position, decreasing with radius to an average 330 km/s around 350 pc. We also modelled the [OIII] gas kinematics with a non-parametric method, estimating the ionisation parameter and electron density in every spaxel, from which we derived an ionised mass outflow rate of 0.076 M$_{\odot}$/yr within the central 1.2 kpc. Regions of high CO(3-2) velocity dispersion, extending to projected distances of 350 pc from the AGN, appear to be the result from the interaction of the AGN wind with molecular gas in the galaxy's disc. Additionally, we find the ionised outflow to spatially correlate with radio and soft X-ray emission in the central kiloparsec. We conclude that the effects of AGN feedback in NGC 5506 manifest as a large-scale ionised wind interacting with the molecular disc, resulting in outflows extending to radial distances of 610 pc, Comment: 24 pages, 30 figures, accepted for publication by Astronomy & Astrophysics

We investigated the properties of 94 [NeV]3426AA-selected type 2 AGN in COSMOS at z=0.6-1.2, performing optical-to-far-infrared spectral energy distribution fitting. In addition, we analyze the X-ray spectra of the X-ray-detected sources to obtain reliable values of the AGN obscuration and intrinsic luminosity. We found that more than two-thirds of our sample is composed of very obscured sources, with about 20% of the sources being candidate CT-AGN and half being AGNs in a strong phase of accretion. With respect to non-active galaxies, we find a higher fraction of sources within the main sequence and little evidence for AGNs quenching the SF. The comparison with the prediction from the in situ co-evolution model suggests that [NeV] is an effective tool for selecting galaxies in the obscured growth phase of the BH-galaxy co-evolution paradigm. Coarse-Grain Reconfigurable Arrays (CGRAs) represent emerging low-power architectures designed to accelerate Compute-Intensive Loops (CILs). The effectiveness of CGRAs in providing acceleration relies on the quality of mapping: how efficiently the CIL is compiled onto the platform. State of the Art (SoA) compilation techniques utilize modulo scheduling to minimize the Iteration Interval (II) and use graph algorithms like Max-Clique Enumeration to address mapping challenges. Our work approaches the mapping problem through a satisfiability (SAT) formulation. We introduce the Kernel Mobility Schedule (KMS), an ad-hoc schedule used with the Data Flow Graph and CGRA architectural information to generate Boolean statements that, when satisfied, yield a valid mapping. Experimental results demonstrate SAT-MapIt outperforming SoA alternatives in almost 50\% of explored benchmarks. Additionally, we evaluated the mapping results in a synthesizable CGRA design and emphasized the run-time metrics trends, i.e. energy efficiency and latency, across different CILs and CGRA sizes. We show that a hardware-agnostic analysis performed on compiler-level metrics can optimally prune the architectural design space, while still retaining Pareto-optimal configurations. Moreover, by exploring how implementation details impact cost and performance on real hardware, we highlight the importance of holistic software-to-hardware mapping flows, as the one presented herein.

We present the first spectroscopic ALMA follow-up for a pilot sample of nine Radio-Selected NIRdark galaxies in the COSMOS field. These sources were initially selected as radio-detected sources (S(3GHz)>12.65 uJy), lacking an optical/NIR counterpart in the COSMOS2015 catalog (Ks>24.7 mag), with just three of them subsequently detected in the deeper COSMOS2020. Several studies highlighted how this selection could provide a population of highly dust-obscured, massive, and star-bursting galaxies. With these new ALMA observations, we assess the spectroscopic redshifts of this pilot sample of sources and improve the quality of the physical properties estimated through SED-fitting. Moreover, we measure the quantity of molecular gas present inside these galaxies and forecast their potential evolutionary path, finding that the RS-NIRdark galaxies could represent a likely population of high-z progenitors of the massive and passive galaxies discovered at z~3. Finally, we present some initial constraints on the kinematics of the ISM within the analyzed galaxies, reporting a high fraction (~55%) of double-peaked lines that can be interpreted as the signature of a rotating structure in our targets or with the presence of major mergers in our sample. We consider nonconvex stochastic optimization problems in the asynchronous centralized distributed setup where the communication times from workers to a server can not be ignored, and the computation and communication times are potentially different for all workers. Using an unbiassed compression technique, we develop a new method-Shadowheart SGD-that provably improves the time complexities of all previous centralized methods. Moreover, we show that the time complexity of Shadowheart SGD is optimal in the family of centralized methods with compressed communication. We also consider the bidirectional setup, where broadcasting from the server to the workers is non-negligible, and develop a corresponding method.

Current bounds on neutrino Majorana mass are affected by significant uncertainties in the nuclear calculations for neutrinoless double-beta decay. A key issue for a data-driven improvement of the nuclear theory is the actual value of the axial coupling constant $g_A$, which can be investigated through forbidden $\beta$-decays. We present the first measurement of 4$^{th}$-forbidden $\beta$-decay of $^{115}$In with a cryogenic calorimeter based on Indium Iodide. Exploiting the enhanced spectral shape method for the first time to this isotope, our study accurately determines simultaneously spectral shape, $g_A$, and half-life. The Interacting Shell Model, which best fits our data, indicates a half-life for this decay at $T_{1/2}=(5.26\pm0.06) \times 10^{14}$,yr.

To maximize its value, the design, development and implementation of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) should focus on its role in facilitating decision support. In this position paper, we offer perspectives on the synergy between SHM and decision-making. We propose a classification of SHM use cases aligning with various dimensions that are closely linked to the respective decision contexts. The types of decisions that have to be supported by the SHM system within these settings are discussed along with the corresponding challenges. We provide an overview of different classes of models that are required for integrating SHM in the decision-making process to support management and operation and maintenance of structures and infrastructure systems. Fundamental decision-theoretic principles and state-of-the-art methods for optimizing maintenance and operational decision-making under uncertainty are briefly discussed. Finally, we offer a viewpoint on the appropriate course of action for quantifying, validating and maximizing the added value generated by SHM. This work aspires to synthesize the different perspectives of the SHM, Prognostic Health Management (PHM), and reliability communities, and deliver a roadmap towards monitoring-based decision support.

In the last decades, an increasing scientific interest has been growing in the elusive population of "dark" (i.e. lacking an optical/NIR counterpart) Dusty Star-Forming Galaxies (DSFGs). Although extremely promising for their likely contribution to the cosmic Star Formation Rate Density and for their possible role in the evolution of the first massive and passive galaxies around $z\sim3$, the difficulty in selecting statistically significant samples of dark DSFGs is limiting their scientific potentialities. This work presents the first panchromatic study of a sample of 263 Radio-Selected NIRdark galaxies discovered in the COSMOS field following the procedure by Talia+21. These sources are selected as radio-bright galaxies (S(3GHz)>12.65 uJy) with no counterpart in the NIR-selected COSMOS2020 catalog (Ks > 25.5 mag). For these sources, we build a new photometric catalog including accurate photometry from the optical to the radio obtained with a new deblending pipeline (PhoEBO: Photometry Extractor for Blended Objects). We employ this catalog to estimate the photo-zs and the physical properties of the galaxies through an SED-fitting procedure performed with two different codes (Magphys and Cigale). Finally, we estimate the AGN contamination in our sample by performing a series of complementary tests. The high values of the median extinction (Av ~ 4) and star formation rate (SFR ~ 500 Msun/yr) confirm the likely DSFG nature of the RS-NIRdark galaxies. The median photo-z (z~3) and the presence of a significant tail of high-z candidates (z>4.5) suggest that these sources are important contributors to the cosmic SFRD and the evolutionary path of galaxies at high redshifts., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. We present a new physically-motivated model for estimating the molecular line emission in active galaxies. The model takes into account (i) the internal density structure of giant molecular clouds (GMCs), (ii) the heating associated both to stars and to the active galactic nuclei (AGN), respectively producing photodissociation regions (PDRs) and X-ray dominated regions (XDRs) within the GMCs, and (iii) the mass distribution of GMCs within the galaxy volume. The model needs, as input parameters, the radial profiles of molecular mass, far-UV flux and X-ray flux for a given galaxy, and it has two free parameters: the CO-to-H2 conversion factor $\alpha_{CO}$, and the X-ray attenuation column density $N_H$. We test this model on a sample of 24 local ($z \leq 0.06$) AGN-host galaxies, simulating their carbon monoxide spectral line energy distribution (CO SLED). We compare the results with the available observations and calculate, for each galaxy, the best ($\alpha_{CO}$, $N_H$) with a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm, finding values consistent with those present in the literature. We find a median $\alpha_{CO} = 4.8$ M$_{\odot}$ (K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^{2}$)$^{-1}$ for our sample. In all the modelled galaxies, we find the XDR component of the CO SLED to dominate the CO luminosity from $J_{\text{upp}} \geq 4$. We conclude that, once a detailed distribution of molecular gas density is taken into account, PDR emission at mid-/high-$J$ becomes negligible with respect to XDR., Comment: 19 pages, 36 figures, resubmitted to MNRAS after addressing referee's comments

This paper presents recent experimental results on the yield of prompt fission $\gamma$ rays from the spontaneous fission of $^{252}$Cf. We use an ionization chamber to tag fission events and measure the masses and kinetic energies of the fission fragments and trans-stilbene organic scintillators to measure the neutrons and $\gamma$ rays emitted by the fission fragments. The combination of the ionization chamber and trans-stilbene scintillators allows us to determine the properties of neutrons and $\gamma$ rays in coincidence with the fragments. The yield of $\gamma$ rays is known to be influenced by the angular momenta (AM) of the fission fragments. We present new experimental evidence that indicates that the total $\gamma$-ray multiplicity, i.e., the sum of both fragments' emission, saturates at sufficiently high internal fragment excitation energies. We also observe distinct behaviors for the yield of $\gamma$ rays from the light and heavy fragment, which for certain mass and total kinetic energy (TKE) regions are weakly or anti-correlated, indicating the presence of complex AM generation modes. We also observed a mass- and TKE-dependent anisotropy of the $\gamma$ rays, which challenges and expands on the conventional notion that the fragments' AM are always aligned perpendicularly to the fission axis. Moreover, the dependence of the anisotropy on mass and TKE indicates a dependence of these properties on the specific fission channels, thus providing an insight into the deformations and dynamics in fission and their connection with experimentally observable quantities., Comment: 8 figures

Context: From redshift 6 to redshift $\approx$ 4 galaxies grow rapidly from low mass galaxies towards the more mature massive galaxies we see at the cosmic noon. Growth via gas accretion and mergers undoubtedly shape this evolution - however, there currently exists much uncertainty over the contribution of each of these processes to the overall evolution of galaxies. Furthermore, previous characterisations of the morphology of galaxies in the molecular gas phase has been limited by the coarse resolution of previous observations. Aims: The goal of this paper is to derive the morpho-kinematic properties of 3 main-sequence systems at $z\sim4.5$, drawn from the ALPINE survey, using brand new high-resolution ALMA data in band 7. The objects were previously characterised as one merger with three components, and and two dispersion-dominated galaxies. Methods: We use intensity and velocity maps, position-velocity diagrams and radial profiles of [CII], in combination with dust continuum maps, to analyse the morphology and kinematics of the 3 systems.} Results: In general, we find that the high-resolution ALMA data reveal more complex morpho-kinematic properties. We identify in one galaxy interaction-induced clumps, showing the profound effect that mergers have on the molecular gas in galaxies, consistent with what is suggested in recent simulations. A galaxy that was previously classified as dispersion dominated turned out to show two bright [CII] emission regions, that could either be merging galaxies or massive star-forming regions within the galaxy itself. The high resolution data for the other dispersion dominated object also revealed clumps of [CII] that were not previously identified. Within the sample, we might also detect star-formation powered outflows (or outflows from Active Galactic Nuclei) which appear to be fuelling diffuse gas regions and enriching the circumgalactic medium., Comment: Submitted to A&A, 13 pages
