- Abstract
Nomenclatural type definitions are one of the most important concepts in biological nomenclature. Being physical objects that can be re-studied by other researchers, types permanently link taxonomy (an artificial agreement to classify biological diversity) with nomenclature (an artificial agreement to name biological diversity). Two proposals to amend the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN), allowing DNA sequences alone (of any region and extent) to serve as types of taxon names for voucherless fungi (mainly putative taxa from environmental DNA sequences), have been submitted to be voted on at the 11th International Mycological Congress (Puerto Rico, July 2018). We consider various genetic processes affecting the distribution of alleles among taxa and find that alleles may not consistently and uniquely represent the species within which they are contained. Should the proposals be accepted, the meaning of nomenclatural types would change in a fundamental way from physical objects as sources of data to the data themselves. Such changes are conducive to irreproducible science, the potential typification on artefactual data, and massive creation of names with low information content, ultimately causing nomenclatural instability and unnecessary work for future researchers that would stall future explorations of fungal diversity. We conclude that the acceptance of DNA sequences alone as types of names of taxa, under the terms used in the current proposals, is unnecessary and would not solve the problem of naming putative taxa known only from DNA sequences in a scientifically defensible way. As an alternative, we highlight the use of formulas for naming putative taxa (candidate taxa) that do not require any modification of the ICN., Publisher’s Note A first version of this text was prepared by the first eight authors and the last one, given here. - Abstract
54 strains of lingotroph fungi from the Komarov Botanical Institute Basidiomycetes Culture Collection, were studied on special hard degraded lignocellulosic substrates (media № 1 and № 2) at various temperatures (30, 40, 45 oC) and pH 5.5 and 4.0. All studied strains could grow at 30 oC but only 11 strains revealed good growth on the substrates and were selected for cultivation at 40 oC. As a result 5 strains were chosen for further study on the lignocellulosic substrates with pH 4.0 at 40 oC for activity of oxidoreductases — Abortiporus biennis 055, Polyporus ciliatus 0626, Trametes trogii 2743, Trametes versicolor 2790 and Pycnoporus sanquineus 2793. It was shown that only Pycnoporus sanquineus 2793 rather high activity of oxidoreductases. This strain demonstrated thermotolerant and acid resistant properties together with high growth rate on hard degraded lignocellulosic substrates and can be recommended for practical use. - Abstract
In the present article, we report data on the whole-genome sequencing of wood-rotting (white-rot) fungus Steccherinum ochraceum LE-BIN 3174. The S. ochraceum LE-BIN 3174 genome consists of 770 scaffolds (N50 = 62,812 bp) with the total length of assembly ∼35 Mb. The structural annotation of the genome resulted in the prediction of 12,441 gene models, among which 181 were models of tRNA-coding genes, and 12,260 - protein-coding genes. The protein-coding genes were annotated with different databases (Pfam, InterPro, eggNOG, dbCAN, and MEROPS). The whole genome sequence and functional annotation provide an important information for the deep investigation of biochemical processes that take place during the late stages of wood decomposition by Basidiomycetes. The Whole Genome project of S. ochraceum LE-BIN 3174 had been deposited at DDBJ/ENA/GenBank under the accession RWJN00000000. The version described in this work is version RWJN00000000.1. For further interpretation of the data provided in this article, please refer to the research article "Fungal Adaptation to the Advanced Stages of Wood Decomposition: Insights from the Steccherinum ochraceum " [1]., (© 2020 The Author(s).)

- Abstract
Collections of a pleurotoid fungus from dead aspen in eastern Russia were initially identified as Lentinus sp., then as Phyllotopsis nidulans. DNA sequencing of cultures derived from these specimens using the nuclear ribosomal 28S (nrLSU) and nuclear ribosomal ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 regions (nrITS) showed that they were neither Lentinus nor Phyllotopsis and were not related to other pleurotoid genera Hohenbuehelia and Pleurotus. Subsequent investigation showed that the Russian fungus was the same as Pleurotus vetlinianus described from Poland. A new genus, Lignomyces, is described and characterized and L. vetlinianus comb. nov. is proposed., (© 2015 by The Mycological Society of America.)
