Intercropping of maize and legume cover crop is currently usual at low technological areas, due to some high benefits and potential such as suppressing weeds, recycling nutrients and coverage of the soil. Suppression of weed is important due to its huge competitory impact on the commercial crops. The nutrient recycling is also important becuase it reduces usage of fertilizers on low technological agriculture. The soil coverage is important to prevent the erosion and reduce the nutrient leaching. All those positive effects can be influenced by type of cultivated species on the intercropping consortium. This study aimed to evaluate the soil coverage, phytomass production and accumulation of nutrients by plants in a maize and legume intercropping system. The experiment consisted of rustic maize “Caiano de Sobrália” variety, intercropped with Brazilian velvet bean, black mucuna, lablab-bean and pigeon pea, whereas a control treatment (sole maize culture) was also added. First, the maize was sown on the experiment. 64 days after emergence (DAE) the legumes were sown. The soil cover rates were evaluated at 0, 64, 84, 120, and 144 DAE. The corn grains were harvested at 120 DAE to obtain the corn grain yield. The remaining portion of maize and entire legume plants were sampled at 144 DAE, when the accumulation of dry mass and nutrient were measured. The intercropping system did not affect the corn grain yield and the soil cover rate provided by maize plants. The black mucuna had the greatest weeds suppression and nutrient accumulation among the legumes cover crops evaluated.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the agronomic attributes and production efficiency of corn silage and grains in an integrated crop-livestock-forestry (ICLF) system, with intercropping of eucalyptus, corn, and Urochloa cultivars during three crop years. The experimental design was completely randomized, in 2x5x3 split-split plots with four replicates. The plots consisted of corn cropped between eucalyptus rows (ICLF) and in full sun; the subplots, of the forage grasses U. brizantha 'Marandu', U. brizantha 'Xaraés', U. brizantha 'Piatã', U. ruziziensis, and U. decumbens 'Basilisk'; and the split-split plots, of the 2011/2012, 2012/2013, and 2013/2014 crop years. There was no effect of eucalyptus on the silage and grain yields of corn when intercropped with forages in 2011/2012. The production efficiency of silage and grains decreased by 25 and 48%, respectively, in 2012/2013 (12-month-old eucalyptus). There was also a 56% reduction in grain yield in 2013/2014 (24-month-old eucalyptus), compared with full sun. In the year the ICLF system is established, the production efficiency of corn silage and grains is not affected by eucalyptus, but decreases with the development of the trees in the subsequent crop years. Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os atributos agronômicos e a eficiência produtiva de forragem e grãos de milho em um sistema de integração lavoura-pecuária-floresta (ILPF), com consorciação de eucalipto, milho e cultivares de Urochloa, durante três safras. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, em parcelas 2x5x3 sub-subdivididas, com quatro repetições. As parcelas consistiram de cultivo de milho entre renques de eucalipto (ILPF) e a pleno sol; as subparcelas, das forrageiras U. brizantha 'Marandu', U. brizantha 'Xaraés', U. brizantha 'Piatã', U. ruziziensis e U. decumbens 'Basilisk'; e as sub-subparcelas, das safras 2011/2012, 2012/2013 e 2013/2014. Não houve efeito do eucalipto nas produtividades de forragem e grãos de milho consorciado com as forrageiras em 2011/2012. A eficiência produtiva de forragem e grãos teve redução de25 e 48%, respectivamente, em 2012/2013 (eucalipto com 12 meses). Também houve redução de 56% na produtividade de grãos em 2013/2014 (eucalipto com 24 meses), em relação ao cultivo a pleno sol. No ano de implantação do sistema ILPF, a eficiência produtiva de forragem e grãos de milho não é afetada pelo eucalipto, mas é reduzida com o desenvolvimento das árvores nas safras subsequentes.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of crossbred steers post-weaned in an integrated crop-livestock system (ICL) and finished in a feedlot, fed either a high-level concentrate diet or whole corn with no roughage. Weaned calves of two breed groups - ½ Angus × ½ Nellore, and ½ Charolais × ¼ Angus × ¼ Nellore - were allotted in a completely randomized experimental design (CRD). During the rainy season, the ½ Angus × ½ Nellore animals showed a higher performance than the ½ Charolais × ¼ Angus ×¼ Nellore ones, with 0.748 and 0.490 kg average daily gain, respectively. The productivity in the post-weaning period was 926 kg ha-1 body weight in a 11-month period, in the ICL system. Subsequently, the animals were confined and fed high-concentrate diet or whole corn with no roughage, in a CRD with a 2×2 factorial arrangement. In the feedlot, the ½ Charolais × ¼ Angus × ¼ Nellore animals showed lower values for carcass average daily gain, carcass yield, and slaughter weight than the ½ Angus × ½ Nellore animals. The high productivity in the ICL shows that this strategy, associated with the use of crossbreeding during the post-weaning and finishing stages, can be indicated for the new demand for a sustainable livestock activity. Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho de bovinos cruzados, recriados em sistema de integração lavoura-pecuária (ILP) e terminados em confinamento, alimentados com dietas com alto nível de concentrado ou exclusivamente de concentrado. Bezerros desmamados de dois tipos de cruzamento - ½ Angus × ½ Nelore e ½ Charolês × ¼ Angus × ¼ Nelore - foram distribuídos em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado (DIC). No período das águas, os animais ½ Angus × ½ Nelore apresentaram desempenho superior ao dos animais ½ Charolês × ¼ Angus × ¼ Nelore, com ganho médio diário de 0,748 e 0,490 kg, respectivamente. A produtividade na recria foi de 926 kg ha-1 de peso corporal no período de 11 meses, no sistema de ILP. Posteriormente, os animais foram confinados e alimentados com dietas com alto nível de concentrado ou exclusivamente de concentrado, em DIC, com arranjo fatorial 2×2. No confinamento, os animais ½ Charolês × ¼ Angus × ¼ Nelore apresentaram valores menores de ganho médio diário de carcaça, rendimento de carcaça e peso ao abate do que os animais ½ Angus × ½ Nelore. A elevada produtividade no sistema ILP mostra que essa estratégia, associada ao uso de cruzamentos durante a recria e a terminação, pode ser indicada para a nova demanda por uma pecuária sustentável.

Crossbreeding has been used to improve performance in beef cattle; however, the effects of breed composition on methane production, yield and intensity from cattle in a tropical intensive system remain unknown. To assess the impact of breed composition on enteric methane emissions, Nellore (NE; yr 1: BW = 171.5 ± 19.4 kg; n = 10; yr 2: BW = 215.8 ± 32.3 kg, n = 25) and Angus-Nellore crossbred (AN; yr 1: BW = 214.2 ± 26.4 kg, n = 10; yr 2: BW = 242.5 ± 32.2 kg, n = 25) were compared. At trial onset, 10 mo old steers grazed Megathyrsus maximus ‘Mombaça’ in the grazing period (GP) and then were finished in a feedlot (FL) (35:65% corn silage:concentrate diet). Steers (n = 8) from each breed composition were randomly selected in GP and FL to measure CH4 production using a sulfur hexafluoride technique and DMI using titanium dioxide. The NE produced 19% less CH4 than AN in GP (17.21 vs 21.17 kg, P < 0.01), and no difference was observed in FL (22.34 vs 22.67 kg, P > 0.10). However, in FL, NE had greater CH4 intensity (CH4/ADG) compared to AN (122.76 vs 97.49 g/kg, P < 0.01). Furthermore, CH4/carcass weight was greater for NE than AN (0.079 vs 0.067 g/kg CW, P < 0.01). Breed composition did not influence CH4 yield (CH4/DMI) in either phase. The percentage CH4/GEI (Ym) for GP was higher for AN than NE (4.5 vs 3.8%), but lower than the IPCC recommended Ym of 6.5%. In FL, Ym was similar between breed composition (5.0%) and greater than the IPCC Ym of 3%. In our study the introduction of Angus into Nellore has potential to reduce CH4 intensity in tropical climates, resulting in less methane emission per kg beef produced.

As feedlot beef production systems are expanding into tropical climates, considerably less is known on their environmental impact specific to these regions. Our objective was to investigate the dynamics of nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) fluxes in a feedlot system representative of Brazil, in order to aggregate new emission data for the characterization of intensive cattle raising in tropical regions. Excreta was obtained from Nellore steers in a feedlot (n = 25, BW = 393 ± 31 kg). Urine (1.3 L) and feces (1.3 kg) were applied separately in plots on an open-lot feedlot pen surface at the beginning of the trial and fluxes were monitored 92 d with static chambers. Although CH4 fluxes were variable, all treatments were a sink for CH4 as the average of the monitoring period (−8.9, −3.1, and −15.4 μg C m−2 h−1 for feces, urine, and control, respectively). The N2O fluxes were higher in the urine affected area, which was related to the higher soil moisture and mineral N availability in comparison to the area with feces. The occurrence of rainfall from 67 to 70 DAA was determinant of very high N2O fluxes either for urine or feces. Hence, GHG emissions from individual excreta were characterized by a period of small but significant fluxes, followed by a period of indistinguishable fluxes at the background level. A third period after rainfall portrayed the large impact of excreta on GHG emissions from the feedlot. The presence of weeds on fields is a concern for farmers, due to competition with the commercial crops, reducing yields. The intercropping of maize with legumes provides weed control; after senescence, the nutrients accumulated by plants are released, recycling nutrients. The study of plant species and their diversity is called phytosociology. This study aimed at evaluating the accumulation of dry phytomass by maize intercropped with legumes and weeds species, and at evaluating nutrient cycling and the phytosociology of weeds. The experiment consisted of maize intercropped with legumes cover crops: jack-beans, Brazilian jack-beans, velvet bean, lablab-beans, and pigeon pea, and the control treatment (maize without intercrop), all without chemical or mechanical weed control. Maize was sown in the plots, and legumes were sown 64 days after maize. Maize was harvested 120 days after sowing (DAS), and legumes at 144 DAS. Weeds were sampled at 84 and 144 DAS. It was possible to evaluate the accumulation of dry phytomass, the nutrient content of the intercrop components, and the phytosociology of weeds. The phytomass accumulation by maize was not affected by the intercrop with legumes. The intercrop with velvet bean accumulated higher dry phytomass and suppressed weeds. Jack beans accumulated dry mass, but did not suppress weeds. The intercropping system changed the diversity of weeds. Panicum maximum, Commelina nudiflora, Commelina benghalensis, Leonotis nepetaefolia and Melampodium divaricatum stood out by presenting higher values of phytosociological index and nutrient recycling. RESUMO: A presença de plantas daninhas nos campos é uma preocupação dos agricultores, devido à competição com culturas comerciais, causando perdas em produtividade. A consorciação do milho com leguminosas de adubação verde propicia controle das plantas daninhas; após a senescência, os nutrientes acumulados pelas plantas são liberados, reciclando nutrientes. O estudo das espécies vegetais e sua diversidade é chamado de fitossociologia. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar o acúmulo de fitomassa do consórcio milho com leguminosas e plantas daninhas, bem como a ciclagem de nutrientes e a fitossociologia das infestantes. O experimento consistiu na consorciação de milho com as leguminosas de adubação verde: feijão-de-porco, feijão-bravo-do-ceará, mucuna-preta, lablab e guandu, além da testemunha (milho solteiro), todas sem controles químicos ou mecânicos de plantas daninhas. Semeou-se milho nas parcelas, e as leguminosas foram semeadas 64 dias após. O milho foi colhido aos 120 dias, e as leguminosas, aos 144 dias. As plantas daninhas foram amostradas aos 84 e 144 dias. Determinou-se acúmulo de fitomassa seca, o conteúdo de nutrientes dos componentes do consórcio e a fitossociologia das plantas daninhas. O acúmulo de fitomassa pelo milho não foi afetado pelo consórcio com adubos verdes. O consórcio com mucuna-preta acumulou maior fitomassa seca e suprimiu as plantas daninhas. O feijão-de-porco acumulou matéria seca, mas suprimiu pouco as plantas daninhas. A consorciação alterou a diversidade das plantas daninhas. Panicum maximum, Commelina nudiflora, Commelina benghalensis, Leonotis nepetaefolia, Melampodium divaricatum se destacaram por apresentar altos valores dos índices fitossociológicos e pelo potencial na reciclagem de nutrientes.

The animals grazed on integrated crop-livestock system in the growing phase (stocking rate 2452 kg BW/ha, herbage mass 4,884 kg dry matter (DM)/ha, forage allowance 5.9 kg DM/100kg BW) and then were finished in a feedlot. Steers (n = 8) from each breed composition were randomly selected in each phase to measure CH4 production using a sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer technique and DM intake (DMI) using titanium dioxide. Compared with NEL, AN had both superior total gain and average daily gain (ADG) in the grazing period. CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito do grupo genético sobre o desempenho produtivo, reatividade, comportamento ingestivo e utilização de N da dieta por bovinos Nelore e cruzado em confinamento e o impacto do N excretado nas emissões de óxido nitroso (N2O). Foram avaliados 25 bovinos Nelore e 20 animais cruzados (½ Angus x ½ Nelore); recebendo uma dieta de 75% de concentrado e 25% de volumoso em confinamento. Para determinação da produção fecal foi utilizado o marcador de dióxido de titânio para determinar o consumo. A reatividade dos animais foi avaliada pelo: escore composto, tempo de saída e local do redemoinho. O comportamento ingestivo avaliado visualmente por 12 horas, determinando as atividades de alimentação, ruminando, ócio, posição em pé ou deitado. Excretas foram coletadas para análise da composição e aplicação no curral para determinação da emissão de N2O com uso de câmaras estáticas. Os animais cruzados foram superiores quanto ao desempenho, mais eficientes com aproveitamento de 26% do N consumido. Quanto à reatividade, os cruzados foram mais calmos pela avaliação de escore composto e tempo de saída. Os fluxos de N2O foram induzidos após aplicação urina e houve emissão intensa de urina de Nelore que alcançaram 1,4 mg N m-2 h-1 após as chuvas e para os cruzados os fluxos atingiram níveis de 0,8 mg N-N2O m-2 h-1. O grupo genético não influenciou nas perdas de N por emissões de N20. As emissões de N2O da urina foram superiores às emissões do controle. As emissões de N2O das fezes não foram estatisticamente diferentes da urina tampouco do controle.

CNPq - Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico Objetivou-se avaliar o desempenho animal e a produção de metano (CH4) entérico de dois grupos genéticos de bovinos de corte em um sistema intensivo de produção, com recria à pasto em sistema de integraçãolavoura-pecuária (ILC) e terminação em confinamento, além de determinar as emissões de óxido nitroso (N2O) e CH4 e o fator de emissão (FE) do N2O das fezes e urina de bovinos de corte depositados em confinamento. No ensaio I, 70 animais de dois grupos genéticos, Nelore (Nel) e cruzados Angus x Nelore (AN), foram comparados quanto ao desempenho e às emissões de CH4 em um sistema de produção intensivo. No início do experimento, novilhos de 10 meses de idade pastejaram Megathyrsusmaximus 'Mombaça' na fase de recria (taxa de lotação de 5,5 UA/ha, produção de forragem de 4884 kg MS/ha, oferta de forragem de 5,9 kg MS/100kg PC) e depois foram terminados em confinamento (dieta 35:65% silagem de milho:concentrado). Novilhos (n=8) de cada grupo genético foram selecionados aleatoriamente em cada fase para medir a produção de CH4 usando a técnica dohexafluoreto de enxofre e o consumo de matéria seca (CMS) utilizando dióxido de titânio. Comparado com Nel, AN tiveram ganho total e GMD superior no período de pastejo. Avaliou-se o desempenho produtivo de quatro grupos genéticos de bovinos zebuínos e cruzados em sistema de Integração Lavoura Pecuária. Foram utilizados 39 bovinos machos não castrados sendo treze 1/2 Aberdeen Angus x 1/2 Nelore (AN); oito 1/2 Charolês x 1/4 Aberdeen Angus x 1/4 Nelore (CAN); treze 1/2 Tabapuã x 1/4 Aberdeen Angus x 1/4 Nelore (TAN) e cinco 1/2 Tabapuã x 1/2 Nelore (TN), com idade média de 9 meses, e pesos médios iniciais de 167,92 kg; 183,16 kg; 135,58 kg e 131,50 kg para os grupos AN, CAN, TAN e TN respectivamente. Para as análises estatísticas foi utilizado o SAS (2000) e a comparação das médias foi realizada pelo teste de Tukey ajustado, adotando-se um nível de significância de 5% em um delineamento estatístico inteiramente casualizado. Os animais permaneceram em pastejo rotacionado de Panicum Maximum cv. Tanzânia com taxa de lotação média de 3,88 UA/ha e oferta de forragem de 12,64%, com consumo médio de suplemento proteico-energético-mineral de 0,1% peso vivo (PV) na seca e 0,6% peso vivo (PV) nas águas. Foi avaliada a produção e qualidade da forrageira, o consumo de matéria seca (CMS), o ganho médio diário (GMD) e a eficiência alimentar (EA). A disponibilidade da forragem foi de 6.440,22 kg MS/ha.
