Abstract

Groundwater is a vital ecosystem of the global water cycle, hosting unique biodiversity and providing essential services to societies. Despite being the largest unfrozen freshwater resource, in a period of depletion by extraction and pollution, groundwater environments have been repeatedly overlooked in global biodiversity conservation agendas. Disregarding the importance of groundwater as an ecosystem ignores its critical role in preserving surface biomes. To foster timely global conservation of groundwater, we propose elevating the concept of keystone species into the realm of ecosystems, claiming groundwater as a keystone ecosystem that influences the integrity of many dependent ecosystems. Our global analysis shows that over half of land surface areas (52.6%) has a medium-to-high interaction with groundwater, reaching up to 74.9% when deserts and high mountains are excluded. We postulate that the intrinsic transboundary features of groundwater are critical for shifting perspectives towards more holistic approaches in aquatic ecology and beyond. Furthermore, we propose eight key themes to develop a science-policy integrated groundwater conservation agenda. Given ecosystems above and below the ground intersect at many levels, considering groundwater as an essential component of planetary health is pivotal to reduce biodiversity loss and buffer against climate change.

Abstract

The permeability of aquifers strongly influences groundwater flow characteristics. Worldwide, coastal groundwater is often the primary freshwater source for coastal communities and ecosystems but is also particularly vulnerable to abstraction since saltwater intrusion may threaten its quality. Thus, understanding coastal permeability is crucial to the sustainable use of coastal groundwater. Here, we present the first global dataset of coastal permeability (CoPerm 1.0), which provides data on coasts' landward, shoreline, and seaward permeability. CoPerm accounts for shoreline characteristics such as cliffs and beaches and contains information on four million segments representing more than two million kilometers of global coastline. Rocky Shores are the most abundant shoreline class, followed by mangroves, beaches, and muddy coasts. Permeability differs between the immediate shoreline (median permeability: 10−12.3 m2), the seaward (median: 10−13.3 m2), and the landward (median: 10−13 m2) sides of the coast. CoPerm provides input data for global coastal groundwater assessments and regional studies of submarine groundwater discharge or saltwater intrusion that can radiate into ecological and economic studies. 15. Cognitive functioning and sustained internet use amid the COVID-19 pandemic: longitudinal evidence from older adults in Switzerland.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between pre-pandemic objective and subjective cognitive functioning and sustained Internet use during the pandemic among older adults in Switzerland. Data from 1299 respondents of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) in 2019/2020 and a supplementary technology use questionnaire during the pandemic in 2021 were used. Cognitive functioning was assessed in 2019/2020 through objective measures (delayed and immediate memory, verbal fluency) and self-rated memory. Sustained Internet use was defined as having used the Internet at least once in the past seven days in 2019/2020 and reporting daily or weekly use in 2021. We found that 73.1% of respondents consistently used Internet between 2019/2020 and 2021. Using multivariable probit regression models controlling for sociodemographic and health variables, we found that higher global cognition z-scores, especially in immediate and delayed memory, were associated with a higher likelihood of sustained Internet use. Additionally, respondents with good, very good, or excellent self-rated memory were more likely to sustain their Internet use. These findings highlight the potential critical role of cognitive health in shaping older adults' digital engagement, suggesting that cognitive assessments and training should be further considered in digital literacy initiatives for this population. 16. Software sustainability of global impact models.

Abstract

Research software for simulating Earth processes enables estimating past, current, and future world states and guides policy. However, this modelling software is often developed by scientists with limited training, time, and funding, leading to software that is hard to understand, (re)use, modify, and maintain, and is, in this sense, non-sustainable. Here we evaluate the sustainability of global-scale impact models across ten research fields. We use nine sustainability indicators for our assessment. Five of these indicators – documentation, version control, open-source license, provision of software in containers, and the number of active developers – are related to best practices in software engineering and characterize overall software sustainability. The remaining four – comment density, modularity, automated testing, and adherence to coding standards – contribute to code quality, an important factor in software sustainability. We found that 29 % (32 out of 112) of the global impact models (GIMs) participating in the Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project were accessible without contacting the developers. Regarding best practices in software engineering, 75 % of the 32 GIMs have some kind of documentation, 81 % use version control, and 69 % have open-source license. Only 16 % provide the software in containerized form which can potentially limit result reproducibility. Four models had no active development after 2020. Regarding code quality, we found that models suffer from low code quality, which impedes model improvement, maintenance, reusability, and reliability. Key issues include a non-optimal comment density in 75 %, insufficient modularity in 88 %, and the absence of a testing suite in 72 % of the GIMs. Furthermore, only 5 out of 10 models for which the source code, either in part or in its entirety, is written in Python show good compliance with PEP 8 coding standards, with the rest showing low compliance. To improve the sustainability of GIM and other research software, we recommend best practices for sustainable software development to the scientific community. As an example of implementing these best practices, we show how reprogramming a legacy model using best practices has improved software sustainability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Across disciplines, researchers increasingly recognize that open science and reproducible research practices may accelerate scientific progress by allowing others to reuse research outputs and by promoting rigorous research that is more likely to yield trustworthy results. While initiatives, training programs, and funder policies encourage researchers to adopt reproducible research and open science practices, these practices are uncommon inmanyfields. Researchers need training to integrate these practicesinto their daily work. We organized a virtual brainstorming event, in collaboration with the German Reproducibility Network, to discuss strategies for making reproducible research and open science training the norm at research institutions. Here, weoutline eleven strategies, concentrated in three areas:(1)offering training, (2)adapting research assessment criteria and program requirements, and (3) building communities. We provide a brief overview of each strategy, offer tips for implementation,and provide links to resources. Our goal is toencourage members of the research community to think creatively about the many ways they can contribute and collaborate to build communities,and make reproducible research and open sciencetraining the norm. Researchers may act in their roles as scientists, supervisors, mentors, instructors, and members of curriculum, hiring or evaluation committees. Institutionalleadership and research administration andsupport staff can accelerate progress by implementing change across their institutions

36. Towards a theory of evaluation for large-scale environmental models

Abstract

We increasingly rely on complex environmental models to understand the functioning and the fate of our planet. Models now inform policy makers and the general public, and therefore have impacts way beyond the scientific realm. Yet, while our models have grown in complexity, scale and societal relevance, there has not been a concurrent development of model evaluation. For example, model evaluation still commonly relies on comparison with historical data at a few geographically biased sites, which is insufficient if models are used for scenario exploration.In this contribution, we want to reflect on the evolution of model evaluation and discuss the requirements that evaluation strategies for complex environmental models should meet. We do so by presenting an alternative strategy applied to global water models, namely evaluation using functional relationships between model forcings and model outputs. We further discuss the more general need for a “theory of evaluation” by looking at approaches fromrelated disciplines, such as the use of emergent constraints in climate modelling or qualitative and participatory approaches to evaluation in sustainability science.&nbsp, The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract

Growing water demand in the Mediterranean region has increased groundwater exploitation, necessitating urgent and efficient groundwater management. Due to the semi-arid climatic condition and the spatial unevenness in recharge, groundwater dependency for different water uses has increased, which presents a severe challenge for its sustainability. Understanding periodic groundwater natural cycles and analyzing persistent water-level trends require long time-series data which rarely exist. Hence, the long-term dynamics of steadystate groundwater levels need to be evaluated for better water resource management and a new action plan. This study aims to assess the multi-decadal changes in steady-state groundwater levels at a regional scale by combining ensemble modelling, essential explanatory variables, and in-situ observations. First, the outputs of three global gradientbased groundwater models were compared to observed groundwater levels in the Iberian Peninsula derived from historical data of 3822 piezometers covering 55 years (1965-2020). Second, the spatial multi-decadal changes in groundwater levels under varying climate conditions were investigated using various geostatistical methods, in different time frames. We argue that a sound combination of essential explanatory variables with in-situ data can explain better the multi-decadal changes in groundwater levels in the region. A temporal-scale investigation is crucial for resolving a variety of water-resource issues which include groundwater availability and changes in groundwater quantity. To this end, a database of comprehensive groundwater data and essential explanatory variables (i.e., elevation, rainfall, and a steady-state groundwater model) was developed and analyzed. In this investigation, we describe the combination of ensemble modelling, in-situ data, and essential explanatory variables as an innovative framework for estimating groundwater potential across the Iberian Peninsula. Such a comprehensive methodology will generate and evaluate long-term data to understand historical groundwater variability. The outputs of this study help to develop strategies for sustainable groundwater exploitation, preservation, and management, especially in a region known as a climate change hotspot.

41. Ground truthing global-scale model estimates of groundwater recharge across Africa

Abstract

Groundwater is an essential resource for natural and human systems throughout the world and the rates at which aquifers are recharged constrain sustainable levels of consumption. However, recharge estimates from global-scale models regularly disagree with each other and are rarely compared to ground-based estimates. We compare long-term mean annual recharge and recharge ratio (annual recharge/annual precipitation) estimates from eight global models with over 100 ground-based estimates in Africa. We find model estimates of annual recharge and recharge ratio disagree significantly across most of Africa. Furthermore, similarity to ground-based estimates between models also varies considerably and inconsistently throughout the different landscapes of Africa. Models typically showed both positive and negative biases in most landscapes, which made it challenging to pinpoint how recharge prediction by global-scale models can be improved. However, global-scale models which reflected stronger climatic controls on their recharge estimates compared more favourably to ground-based estimates. Given this significant uncertainty in recharge estimates from current global-scale models, we stress that groundwater recharge prediction across Africa, for both research investigations and operational management, should not rely upon estimates from a single model but instead consider the distribution of estimates from different models. Our work will be of particular interest to decision makers and researchers who consider using such recharge outputs to make groundwater governance decisions or investigate groundwater security especially under the potential impact of climate change.
