Abstract

We identified and computed the horizontal wavelengths of atmospheric gravity waves in clouds using a visible camera installed on a window of the Columbus module of the International Space Station (ISS) and controlled by a Raspberry Pi computer. The experiment was designed in the context of the Astro Pi challenge, a project run by ESA in collaboration with the Raspberry Pi Foundation, where students are allowed the opportunity to write a code to be executed at the ISS. A code was developed to maximize the probability of capturing images of clouds while the ISS is orbiting the Earth. Several constraints had to be fulfilled such as the experiment duration limit (3 hours) and the maximum data size (3 gigabytes). After receiving the data from the ISS, small-scale gravity waves were observed in different regions in the northern hemisphere with horizontal wavelengths in the range of 1.0 to 4.7 km., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

The skin is the largest organ in the human body and serves multiple functions such as barrier protection and thermoregulation. The maintenance of its integrity and healthy structure is of paramount importance. Accordingly, technological advances in cosmetic sciences have been directed towards optimizing these factors. Plant-derived ingredients have been explored for their bioactivity profiles and sustainable sources. Grape by-products contain a group of bioactive molecules that display important biological activities. Nonetheless, many of these molecules (e.g., phenolic compounds) are unstable and susceptible to degradation. So, their encapsulation using nano/microsystems (i.e., microdispersions) has been explored as a promising solution. In this work, two grape seed extracts were obtained, one from a single grape variety (GSE-Ov) and another from a mix of five grape varieties (GSE-Sv). These extracts were analysed for their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, as well as their chemical composition and molecular structure. The extract that showed the most promising properties was GSE-Ov with a DPPH IC50 of 0.079 mg mL−1. This extract was encapsulated in soy lecithin microdispersions coated with pectin, with an encapsulation efficiency of 88.8%. They showed an in vitro release of polyphenols of 59.4% during 24 h. The particles displayed a zeta potential of −20.3 mV and an average diameter of 13.6 µm. Microdispersions proved to be safe under 5 and 2.5 mg mL−1 in HaCaT and HDF cell models, respectively. Additionally, they demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity against IL-1α when tested at 2 mg mL−1. Abstract

The use of by-products as a source of bioactive compounds with economic added value is one of the objectives of a circular economy. The olive oil industry is a source of olive pomace as a by-product. The olive pomace used in the present study was the exhausted olive pomace, which is the by-product generated from the air drying and subsequent hexane extraction of residual oil from the olive pomace. The objective was to extract bioactive compounds remaining in this by-product. Various types of green extraction were used in the present study: solvent extraction (water and hydroalcoholic); ultrasound-assisted extraction; Ultra-Turrax-assisted extraction; and enzyme-assisted extraction (cellulase; viscoenzyme). The phenolic profile of each extract was determined using HPLC-DAD and the total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity (ABTS, DPPH, and ORAC) were determined as well. The results showed significant differences in the yield of extraction among the different methods used, with the enzyme-assisted, with or without ultrasound, extraction presenting the highest values. The ultrasound-assisted hydroethanolic extraction (USAHE) was the method that resulted in the highest content of the identified phenolic compounds: 2.021 ± 0.29 mg hydroxytyrosol/100 mg extract, 0.987 ± 0.09 mg tyrosol/100 mg extract, and 0.121 ± 0.005 mg catechol/100 mg extract. The conventional extraction with water at 50 °C produced the best results for TPC and antioxidant activity of the extracts. The extracts from the USAHE were able to inhibit Gram-positive bacteria, especially Bacillus cereus, showing 67.2% inhibition at 3% extract concentration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Graphene presents unique opto-electronic properties which makes it useful for a wide range of applications and devices, such as high-speed photodetectors, that rely on the relaxation dynamics of photoexcited charge carriers. These demand reliable and reproducible methods for synthesis of high quality graphene. Here we present ultrafast degenerate pump-probe measurements of multilayer graphene coatings grown by microwave plasma chemical vapour deposition (MPCVD) and analyse the impact of the synthesis growth time on the material’s nonequilibrium optical response.

Abstract

Aims: At the same location, variability among orchards may be high, which is reflected in fruit quality, and it may be associated mainly with growers’ practices. This study aimed to identify physicochemical variability within pears (Pyrus communis L. cv 'Rocha') from three orchards from the same location and under the same climate conditions and correlate it with mineral composition. Methods: Fruits from three orchards harvested at the optimal harvest time were characterized during ripening under shelf-life conditions of 7 d at 20 ± 2 °C. The analyses performed included ethylene production, respiration rate, fruit quality (firmness, skin colour, soluble solids, and titratable acidity), macro and micronutrients, ethylene biosynthesis enzymes, esters, sugars, and organic acids. Principal component analysis was used to show the variability among fruits from the three orchards and to correlate the differences with the fruit mineral composition. Results: Phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) were significantly correlated with esters and soluble solids content (r ∼0.4 for both minerals). Fruits with higher P and K concentrations were associated with a potential over-ripeness pattern considering their higher acetate production and lower sugar concentration. Esters, soluble sugars, and sorbitol were the dominant fruit quality factors responsible for the differences among the orchards.Conclusion: With this study it is expected that a better understanding of the relationship between specific minerals and quality parameters can help growers manage their orchards more efficiently and achieve consumers’ quality demands.

50. Production of bioactive protein-enriched hydrolysates from fish by-products using autohydrolysis

Abstract

Protein demand is expected to double by 2050 [1]. The amount of by-products generated from the fish processing industry represents more than half of the entire fish weight. These materials are commonly discarded with high costs and environmental burden [1,2]. Giving their high protein content (57%, dry weight), fish- based by- and co-products could be used in the development and fortification of food and feed products, thus contributing to bioeconomy and sustainability. Hydrolysis has been widely used to extract protein from several matrixes and the resulting hydrolysates usually exhibit interesting bioactive and functional properties [3,4]. The present work aimed the production of bioactive protein-enriched hydrolysates from fish by-products, using water under subcritical conditions. For that, the raw material was homogenized and centrifugated at 8000 g and 4 ºC for 30 min. The resulting solid biomass was used for the hydrolysis experiments. Several temperatures (150 to 230 ºC) and times (5 to 30 min) were tested, using 20 g (dry weight) of biomass and 0.4 L of water. After the hydrolysis, the solubilization yields were determined and the hydrolysates were analysed for their chemical composition, peptide profiles (HPLC) and antioxidant activity (in vitro colorimetric assays). The solubilization yields increased with temperature and time of reaction. All hydrolysates presented antioxidant activity, being the best conditions at temperatures between 170 and 230 C. Moreover, all hydrolysates presented high protein content (up to 82%). Autohydrolysis proved to be an efficient method for the solubilization and hydrolysis of protein from fish by-products without the need for chemicals or expensive enzymes.
