A global rise in population and environmental degradation pose challenges to agricultural productivity worldwide, compelling the need for new strategies to tackle abiotic stress, pathogens, and other pests. Despite increasing crop yields, the Green Revolution has not achieved sustainable agriculture, largely due to indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides. Extensive use of synthetic pesticides elicits a persistent impact on the ecosystem, besides affecting the health of humans, animals, and other non-target beings. These considerations have mandated the need for alternative approaches such as the utilization of bio-pesticides, comprising biochemical pesticides, microbial pesticides, and plant-incorporated protectants, to preserve agriculture output, enhance plant growth, and compensate for the reduced use of synthetic pesticides. Bio-pesticides derived from microbial sources (viruses, bacteria, and fungi) are gaining much prominence due to their sustainability, non-toxic nature, and specific action against target species. Moreover, they are also non-pathogenic and have been shown to promote the growth of agricultural crops. Therefore, they are rendered as promising choices in integrated pest management where less dependency on chemical agents is desired. Up until now, several microbial biocontrol agents have been recognized, mass-produced, and effectively formulated for commercial availability as bio-pesticides. Additionally, a few have achieved dominant positions in the market. This review highlights the sources, mode of action, and formulation of microbial bio-pesticides and provides an insight into their associated merits in the agricultural sector. It also emphasizes the commercialization and global market potential of microbial bio-control agents, paving the way for sustainable agriculture.

The persistent expansion in world energy and synthetic compounds requires the improvement of renewable alternatives in contrast to non-sustainable energy wellsprings. Lignocellulose is an encouraging feedstock to be utilized in biorefineries for its conversion into value-added products, including biomaterials, biofuels and several bio-based synthetic compounds. Aside from all categories, biofuel, particularly bioethanol is the most substantial fuel derived from lignocellulosic biomass and can be obtained through microbial fermentation. Generally, extreme settings are required for lignocellulosic pretreatment which results in the formation of inhibitors during biomassdegradation. Occasionally, lignin polymers also act as inhibitors and are left untreated during the pretreatment, engendering inefficient hydrolysis. The valorization of lignocellulosic biomass by laccases can be viewed as a fundamental trend for improving bioethanol production. However, one of the main obstacles for developing commercially viable biofuel industries is the cost of enzymes, which can be resolved by utilizing laccases derived from microbial sources. Microbial laccases have been considered an exceptionally integral asset for delignification and detoxification of pretreated LCB, which amplify the resultant fermentation and saccharification processes. This review provides a summary of microbial laccases and their role in valorizing LCB to bioethanol, compelling enthralling applications in bio-refining industries all across the globe.

The microbial biosynthesis of proteins, primary metabolites, and chemicals is gaining extraordinary momentum and is presently viewed as an advancing approach in the industrial research sector. Increased threats to the environment and the possibility of declining petroleum assets have switched the spotlight to microbial cell factories (MCFs). Aside from possessing various advantages over chemical synthesis, such as less toxicity, cheaper methodologies, and an environmentally benign nature, microbes can be cultivated in fermenters, resulting in an effective bioprocessing approach in terms of industrial relevance. As the overwhelming majority of biodiversity is microbial, this review first highlights the microbial biodiversity of industrially vital microorganisms. Then, the paper delineates the production pathways for generating valuable bioproducts via microbial workhorses. Many host cells synthesize bio-compounds as a part of their natural mechanism; however, several techniques have also been developed to attain the desired end product from non-native microbes with selected properties. The microbial biosynthetic pathways can be categorized as native-existing pathways, heterologous pathways, and artificial de novo pathways. Systems metabolic engineering, which integrates metabolic engineering with evolutionary engineering, synthetic biology, and systems biology, has further revolutionized the field of engineering robust phenotypes. The employment of these strategies improves the performance of the strain, eventually achieving high titer and productivity rates of bio-chemicals. Modern trends and tools for exploiting native pathways and designing non-native-created pathways are also briefly discussed in this paper. Finally, the review discusses the use of microbial workhorses for producing a myriad of materials and chemicals, including carboxylic acids, amino acids, plant natural products (PNPs), carotenoids, flavors, and fragrances, unveiling the efficacy of utilizing microbial species to generate sustainable bio-based products.

The excessive use of fossil has resulted in the drastic exhaustion of natural energy sources, leading to environmental challenges and energy crises. Owing to rising energy demand there is a dire need to shift towards renewable energies from lignocellulosic biomass. The present study assessed the co-production of biohydrogen (H2) and biomethane (CH4) by utilizing a less explored halophyte Atriplexcrassifolia. Various reaction parameters were evaluated for their effect on biohydrogen and biomethane production in batch experiments. One parameter at a time experimental strategy was chosen for production optimization. Hydrogen and methane yields along with their production rates were assessed at different incubation times, temperatures, pH, substrate concentrations, and inoculum sizes in acidogenesis and methanogenesis stages, respectively. In the first stage, maximum cumulative hydrogen production of 66 ± 0.02 mL, with hydrogen yield of 13.2 ± 0.03 mL/g, and hydrogen production rate (HPR) of 1.37 ± 0.05 mL/h was attained when the reaction mixture (5 g Atriplexcrassifolia and 10 mL pretreated sewage sludge) was processed at 37°C and pH 5.5 after 48 h of incubation. While in the second stage, maximum cumulative methane production, i.e., 343 ± 0.12 mL, methane yield (MY) of 8.5 ± 0.07 mL/mL, and methane production rate (MPR) of 0.8 ± 0.05 mL/h was achieved after 18 days of incubation of reaction mixture (40 mL of hydrogenic slurry with 80 mL inoculum) at 45°C and pH 8. Furthermore, a 51% and 24% rise in biohydrogen and biomethane production respectively were recorded when the gases were produced at these optimized reaction conditions. The results ensure halophyte Atriplexcrassifolia as an imperative renewable energy resource and proposed that effective optimization of the process further increased the coproduction of biohydrogen and biomethane.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have upgraded the practices of valorizing lignocellulosic feedstock by lessening biomass recalcitrance through delignification in precise and economical manner. In this study, the influence of a series of deep eutectic mixtures was evaluated on the halophyte Atriplex crassifolia for achieving elevated biogas production. Initially, the biomass was pretreated via several DESs with varying hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) including carboxylic acids, amine/amide, and polyols/glycols. DES composed of choline chloride (ChCl) and lactic acid (LA) evidenced as the most effective solvent in achieving high lignin removal rates and was further optimized by evaluating the parameters of molar ratio of DES components, solid-to-liquid ratio, and solvent addition. A maximum delignification value of 89.5% was achieved by 15% diluted ChCl: LA (1:2) DES at a biomass loading of 1:15. The solubilization rate of diluted ChCl: LA was also raised up to 38%. FT-IR analysis revealed significant lignin elimination from ChCl: LA pretreated substrates. Moreover, ≥88% of ChCl: LA DES was recovered after up to three pretreatment cycles, retaining ≥85% delignification efficiency. Fresh DES-pretreated Atriplex crassifolia recorded 32.2 mL/g of biogas production yield due to increased cellulosic content. The findings validated Atriplex crassifolia as an efficient feedstock for biogas production and confirmed the affectivity of ChCl: LA pretreatment in eliminating the lignin barrier, ultimately making cellulosic sugars readily biodegradable and highly accessible for anaerobic microorganisms.

Marine bacterial species contribute to a significant part of the oceanic population, which substantially produces biologically effectual moieties having various medical and industrial applications. The use of marine-derived bacterial pigments displays a snowballing effect in recent times, being natural, environmentally safe, and health beneficial compounds. Although isolating marine bacteria is a strenuous task, these are still a compelling subject for researchers, due to their promising avenues for numerous applications. Marine-derived bacterial pigments serve as valuable products in the food, pharmaceutical, textile, and cosmetic industries due to their beneficial attributes, including anticancer, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and cytotoxic activities. Biodegradability and higher environmental compatibility further strengthen the use of marine bio-pigments over artificially acquired colored molecules. Besides that, hazardous effects associated with the consumption of synthetic colors further substantiated the use of marine dyes as color additives in industries as well. This review sheds light on marine bacterial sources of pigmented compounds along with their industrial applicability and therapeutic insights based on the data available in the literature. It also encompasses the need for introducing bacterial bio-pigments in global pigment industry, highlighting their future potential, aiming to contribute to the worldwide economy.
