The Greek-Latin authors present Qarthadašt (Cartagena) as one of the main bastions of territorial control of the Carthaginians in Iberia. It had easy and close maritime relationship with Africa, the Strait area and Ibiza, and was located near rich silver deposits. These two reasons are determining factors in its prosperity. The geomorphological evolution and a history without interruption have notably changed the original physiognomy of the site, where the city was founded around 228 BC. This paper focuses on the study of the western sea front of the Cartagena bay. There borehole cores and foundation excavation section allowed to define a strong anthropic action dated at the second half of 3rd century BC. Paleontological (ostracodes and molluskas), geochemical (biomarkers and amino acid racemization) and sedimentological studies allowed to describe a Holocene dated environment with strong continental influence to the north, more marine to the south. Logs and branches sharpened into a point driven into a muddy bottom could be related to a first anthropic activity in the area in a shallow embayment that due to the hydrodynamics change evolved into a thick sand accumulation. Les auteurs gréco-latins présentent Qarthadašt (Carthagène) comme l’un des principaux bastions du contrôle territorial des Carthaginois en Ibérie. La ville était située à proximité de riches gisements d’argent et entretenait des relations maritimes étroites avec l’Afrique, la région du Détroit et Ibiza. Ces deux facteurs ont été déterminants pour favoriser sa prospérité. L’évolution géomorphologique du site et le fait qu’il ait eu une occupation historique constante depuis sa fondation vers 228 av. J.-C., ont notamment modifié la physionomie originale de l’emplacement. Cet article analyse le développement du front maritime occidental de la baie de Carthagène. Grâce à des carottages géologiques et une section d’excavation il a été possible de définir une forte action anthropique datant de la seconde moitié du IIIe siècle avant J.-C. Des études paléontologiques (ostracodes et mollusques), géochimiques (biomarqueurs et racémisation des acides aminés) et sédimentologiques ont permis de décrire un environnement daté de l’Holocène caractérisé par une forte influence continentale au nord, plus marine au sud. Des rondins et des branches aiguisés à une extrémité et enfoncées dans un fond vaseux pourraient être liés à une première activité anthropique dans la zone dans une baie peu profonde. Celle-ci, en raison du changement hydrodynamique, aurait évolué vers une épaisse accumulation de sable.

55 geological sites have been selected in Sierra Espuña-Mula Depression area (Murcia province, SE Spain). These sites have been grouped into 8 geotrails of which 5 in Sierra Espuña and 3 in the Mula Depression. The selected sites display a great variety of relevant geological features regarding diverse geoscience disciplines, such as structural geology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, paleontology, petrology, mineralogy, geomorphology and hydrogeology. The sites and geotrails have been evaluated and ranked with a numerical methodology based on recent pertinent literature that tends to decrease the subjectivity related with any assessment process. The assessment includes Scientific Value (SV), Potential Educational Use (PEU), Potential Touristic Use (PTU) and Degradation Risk (DR), which have been quantified by using several criteria. This allows visitors to select the most suitable route according to their goals. The publication of these geological sites and geotrails could be used for scientific and educational purposes (within the Earth Sciences), and also to promote nature tourism. This could increase economic activity and sustainable development in the area by attracting more visitors to the region. Se han seleccionado 55 sitos geológicos en la zona de Sierra Espuña-Depresión de Mula (provincia de Murcia, SE España). Estos sitos han sido agrupados en 8 geo-rutas: 5 en la Sierra Espuña y 3 en la Depresión de Mula. Los sitos seleccionados presentan una gran variedad de rasgos geológicos relevantes para diversas disciplinas de las geosciencias como geología estructural, estratigrafía, sedimentología, paleontología, petrología, mineralogía, geomorfología e hidrogeología. Los sitos y geo-rutas han sido evaluados y clasificados con una metodología numérica basada en la literatura reciente que tiende a disminuir la subjetividad relacionada con cualquier proceso de valorización. La valorización incluye el Valor Científico (SV), el Uso Educativo Potencial (PEU), el Uso Turístico Potencial (PTU) y el Riesgo de Degradación (DR), los cuales han sido cuantificados mediante varios criterios. Esto permitirá a los visitantes seleccionar la ruta más adecuada según sus objetivos. La publicación de estos sitos y geo-rutas podría utilizarse con fines científicos y educativos (dentro de las Ciencias de la Tierra), y también promover el turismo de la naturaleza en favor de la actividad económica y el desarrollo sostenible en el área al atraer más visitantes a la región. Se perforó un sondeo de 30 m en la Bahía de Cartagena. El doble objetivo del mismo fue obtener datos sobre el antiguo frente marítimo de la ciudad romana y establecer la cronoestratigrafía y evolución paleoambiental. El sondeo (E3) se muestreó con alta resolución. Los sedimentos de la parte inferior (30-11,3 m) con predominio de colores marrones que indican condiciones oxidantes, la fauna de aguas salobres (Cerastoderma glaucum/Cyprideis torosa) y la sedimentación dominada por fangos y arenas, permiten interpretar el medio sedimentario estudiado como una llanura fangosa costera ligada a un abanico aluvial. Las edades AAR obtenidas revelan que todo el MIS5 está incluido en el registro. La parte superior (11,3-3,0 m), correspondiente al MIS 1, consiste en fangos orgánicos negros con arena y grava. Aparece una amplia diversidad de moluscos marinos en estadios juveniles de desarrollo. Todo esto representa el “cul de sac” de una bahía protegida donde se acumulaban restos vegetales, periódicamente afectada por llegadas de detríticos aluviales. Existe una somerización a techo del depósito, A new borehole was drilled at the end of the Cartagena Bay. The twofold aim of this operation was to obtain insights into the ancient Roman city seafront, and to establish its cronostratigraphy and paleoenvironmental evolution. A continuous 30 m long core (E3) was drilled and sampled with high resolution. The sediments of the lower part (30-11.3 m) with predominant brown colour indicating oxydizing conditions, the brackish-water fauna (Cerastoderma glaucum/Cyprideis torosa) and mud/sand dominance, allow to interpret the sedimentary environment as formed in a coastal mud flat linked to an alluvial fan. Consistent AAR dating ages reveal that the whole MIS5 record is included. The upper part of the record (11.3-3.0 m), which belongs to MIS 1, is made of black muddy sand and gravel. It appears a high diversity of marine mollusk species mostly in juvenile stage of development. This represents a complex environment: a “cul-d-sac” at the protected end of the bay where plant debris accumulated, being intruded by alluvial inputs. [ESP] El Saladar de Agua Amarga, situado al sur de Alicante, se encuentra sobre un acuífero costero del mismo nombre que en las últimas décadas ha sido escenario de dos intervenciones antrópicas sucesivas: la actividad de una industria salinera y la explotación para el abastecimiento de las desaladoras de Alicante I y II. Estas intervenciones han condicionado sensiblemente tanto la calidad química de las aguas subterráneas, cuya elevada salinidad es consecuencia de las antiguas salinas, como el régimen de flujo, merced a los conos de bombeo de los pozos de extracción de las desaladoras. Además, el saladar está ligado a una zona húmeda de interés ecológico. Con objeto de realizar un seguimiento piezométrico y de calidad química de las aguas del acuífero, la Mancomunidad de los Canales del Taibilla (organismo gestor de la explotación de las desaladoras), en colaboración con la UPCT, diseñó una red de control sobre el saladar y su entorno. Desde mayo de 2008, se realiza un registro mensual de piezometría y conductividad eléctrica, proporcionando los datos tratados en el presente trabajo. En esta Tesis Doctoral se investiga el régimen hidrodinámico e hidroquímico del acuífero y se desarrolla un modelo conceptual de funcionamiento. En primer lugar se caracteriza el entorno de la zona de estudio en relación con su climatología, geología, geomorfología e hidrogeología, utilizando la información bibliográfica existente, y se describen las obras de captación de las desaladoras. A continuación, a partir de los informes de la etapa de investigación previa a la construcción de las desaladoras y de la información geológica de nuevas campañas de campo, se caracteriza el acuífero costero de Agua Amarga: tipo de acuífero, litología, parámetros hidráulicos, espesor, extensión, etc. Para valorar las respuestas del acuífero frente a los registros de lluvias, extracciones y vertidos de agua del mar sobre el saladar, se ha integrado esta información con los datos de las campañas mensuales de control de piezometría y calidad química. Paralelamente, con el objeto de conocer los procesos de mezcla y el origen de las aguas, se han efectuado análisis químicos e isotópicos a muestras de aguas meteóricas y subterráneas en distintos puntos. Con todo ello se ha elaborado un modelo conceptual de funcionamiento del acuífero y un balance hídrico. Como apoyo a este estudio se realiza un modelo 3-D de flujo y transporte con SEAWAT con la pretensión de explicar e interpretar cualitativa, y en menor medida cuantitativamente, los procesos que tienen lugar en el acuífero, ya sean motivados por intervenciones antrópicas o naturales. También se incluye un estudio de la caracterización física de escenarios 2-D de intrusión marina en presencia de saladares cercanos. Por último, se describen los valores ecológicos del humedal y se evalúa el efecto de la actividad de las desaladoras y del plan de recuperación con vertidos de agua de mar sobre la piezometría y salinidad de las aguas, valorando la posibilidad de implementar estas medidas en otros escenarios semejantes. [ENG] he Saladar of Agua Amarga, located at the south of Alicante province, lays over the coastal aquifer of its name which in the last decades has been subjected to two successive anthropogenic actuations: the exploitation of a salt marsh at its surface and the water supply for the desalination plants of Alicante I and II. These actuations have mostly influenced both by the chemical quality of the underground water, whose high grade of salinity is a direct consequence of the ancient salt marsh, and the flow regime, due to the pumping cone of the extraction wells of plants. In addition, the Saladar of Agua Amarga is linked to a wetland zone of ecological interest. In order to realize the study of the piezometric changes as well as the chemical quality of the ground water caused by the anthropogenic actuations, the ‘Mancomunidad de los Canales del Taibilla’ (responsible of the exploitation of the plants), in collaboration with the UPCT, designed a piezometric network over the Saladar and its surroundings. From May 2008, is carried out a monthly lecture of piezometry and electric conductivity to provide the treated in this work. In this Doctoral Thesis it is investigated the hydro-dynamic and hydro-chemical regimes of the Agua Amarga´s aquifer developing a performance conceptual model. Firstly, the study area is characterized in relation to its climatology, geology, geomorphology and hydrogeology, by using the background (bibliography) information; the facilities of the desalination plants are also described. Next, from the studies of both the researching made before the installation of the plants and the geological data coming from the new field campaigns, the coastal Agua Amarga aquifer is characterized: sort of aquifer, lithology, hydraulic parameters, thickness, surface extension, etc. To assess the behavior of the aquifer as regards of rainfalls, water catchments for the plants and seawater pouring over the saladar, this information has been integrated in conjunction to the data coming from the monthly campaigns of the control of piezometry and water quality. In parallel, in order to know the mixing processes and the origin of the water, chemical and isotope analysis were carried out on samples of both meteoric and underground water taken at different locations. All the results were used to elaborate a conceptual performance model of the aquifer and a water balance. As an added support of this study a 3-D fluid-flow and solute-transport model has been designed and run in SEAWAT in order to provide a qualitative, and in less degree quantitative, explanation for the processes that emerges in the aquifer, either due to the anthropogenic or natural actuations. Also, the physical characterization of 2-D, marine intrusion with salt flats, scenarios are presented. Finally, ecological values of the wetland are described, evaluating the effect of the salt marsh and the plan of wetland restoration (based on a program of seawater pouring) in the piezometry and salinity of the water, studying the possibility of applied the program to other scenarios., Escuela Internacional de Doctorado, Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena
