Abstract

Information Extraction processes in handwritten documents tend to rely on obtaining an automatic transcription and performing Named Entity Recognition (NER) over such transcription. For this reason, in publicly available datasets, the performance of the systems is usually evaluated with metrics particular to each dataset. Moreover, most of the metrics employed are sensitive to reading order errors. Therefore, they do not reflect the expected final application of the system and introduce biases in more complex documents. In this paper, we propose and publicly release a set of reading order independent metrics tailored to Information Extraction evaluation in handwritten documents. In our experimentation, we perform an in-depth analysis of the behavior of the metrics to recommend what we consider to be the minimal set of metrics to evaluate a task correctly.

Abstract

Although iron (Fe) is the most biologically abundant transition metal, it is highly toxic when it accumulates as Fe2+, forming a labile Fe pool and favoring the Fenton reaction. This oxidative scenario leads to a type of caspase-independent programmed cell death, referred to as ferroptosis, where following processes take place: (i) Fe2+ overload, (ii) glutathione peroxidase 4 inactivation, (iii) lipid peroxidation, and (iv) glutathione depletion. The present study sought to evaluate the consequences of Fe2+ administration on ferroptosis induction in Caenorhabditis elegans. We demonstrated higher mortality, increased lipid peroxidation, reduced glutathione peroxidase activity, and morphological damage in dopaminergic neurons upon Fe2+ overload. Pharmacological intervention at the level of lipid peroxidation with ferrostatin-1 (250 μM) mitigated the damage and returned the biochemical parameters to basal levels, revealing the potential of this therapeutical approach. Finally, to assess the relationship between ferroptosis and dopamine in a Parkinsonian background, we evaluated the UA44 worm strain which overexpresses the alpha-synuclein protein in cherry-labeled dopaminergic neurons. We demonstrated that Fe2+ administration reduced lethality associated with similar alterations in biochemical and dopaminergic morphological parameters in wild-type animals. These experiments provide mechanistic-based evidence on the efficacy of a pharmacological approach to mitigate the physiological, biochemical, and morphological consequences of Fe2+ overload. At the same time, they encourage further research on the impact of the combined effects resulting from the genetic background and dopamine signaling in a Parkinsonian phenotype. Abstract

The proper use of protective equipment is very important to avoid fatalities. One sector in which this has a great impact is that of construction sites, where a large number of workers die each year. In this sector as in others, employers are responsible for providing their employees with this equipment. In addition, employers must monitor and ensure its correct use. These tasks are usually performed using manual procedures. Existing tools to automate this process are unreliable and present scalability issues. In this paper, we research the benefits of using a cloud-edge computing architecture to automate the monitoring of protective equipment. The solution we propose successfully addresses all the problems that appear in hostile and unstructured work environments such as construction sites. Although these sites are used as a use case, the approach presented can also be deployed in other sectors with similar characteristics and restrictions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
