16. Weld gap position detection based on eddy current methods with mismatch compensation

Abstract

The paper proposes a method for finding the accurate position of narrow gaps, intended for seam tracking applications. Laser beam welding of butt joints, with narrow gap and weld width, demand very accurate positioning to avoid serious and difficult to detect lack of fusion defects. Existing optical and mechanical gap trackers have problems with narrow gaps and surface finish. Eddy current probes can detect narrow gaps, but the accuracy is affected by mismatch in height above the surface on either side of the gap. In this paper a non-contact eddy-current method, suitable for robotic seam tracking, is proposed. The method is based on the resistive and inductive response of two absolute eddy current coils on either side of the gap to calculate a position compensated for height variations. Additionally, the method may be used to estimate the values of height and gap width, which is useful for weld parameter optimization. To investigate the response to variations in height, the method is tested on non-magnetic metals by scanning one commercially available eddy current probe across an adjustable gap and calculating the expected response for a two-probe configuration. Results for gap position are promising, while mismatch and gap width results need further investigation.

Abstract

Eddy Current Testing (ECT) plays a key role in detecting cracks and defects in conductors. The present study examines for the first time how the subregion method as an effective mathematical and computational technique can be admixed with Finite Element Method (FEM) to study multiple defects parameters for ECT issues. Separating a defect region from the entire domain in any computational technique will save both time and storage space. Examples of different types of defects are presented in this article. A tangible result of processing time reduction by 90% has been achieved which has led us to consider the subregion FEM method as an effective method in solving different Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) problems. An agreement between our results and others using classical FEM has been achieved which could lead to using this technique in online and field testing problems. The presented subregion FEM algorithm was verified experimentally with good agreement by testing Aluminum (T6061-T6) samples with defects. A Tunneling Magnetoresistive (TMR) sensor was used to measure the component of the magnetic field from normal to the sample top surface. A major component of minimizing processing time was achieved, which could lead to using this technique in online and field testing problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In eddy current nondestructive testing (EC-NDT) of a multilayer riveted structure, rotating current excitation, generated by orthogonal coils, is advantageous in providing sensitivity to defects of all orientations. The signal of a defect is not only a function of its size but also of the geometrical features in vicinity to the rivet such as edges, adjacent rivets and properties of the layered structure. Numerical models can be used to provide fast and accurate estimates of defect signals. In this paper the sensitivity of the eddy current system with rotating current excitation and GMR sensors is evaluated by considering the effect of rivet permeability, lift-off, thickness of first layer as well as defect orientation related to adjacent rivets and edges on the signal measured. A numerical model capable of simulating these combinations of defect and test geometry parameters at an acceptable computation time is used.
