Agronomy biofortification is an important crop management strategy to enhance concentrations of micronutrients in edible portions. The availability of micronutrients for plant uptake is reduced by the high salinity, pH, and lime of soils. Hence, this study aimed to determine the most appropriate time and the best ratio of zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe) consumption during the wheat growth stages in a saline and calcareous soil. The experiment consisted of two factors with four levels; 0, 30, 60, and 120 kg Zn ha−1 as Zn0, Zn1, Zn2, and Zn3 respectively, and 0, 2.5, 5, and 7.5 kg Fe ha−1 as Fe0, Fe1, Fe2, and Fe3 respectively, in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The results showed that the interaction effects of Fe and Zn fertilizers application were significant on the wheat yield indices and concentration of Fe and Zn in wheat shoots and grain. The simultaneous application of 120 kg Zn ha−1 and 5 kg Fe ha−1 caused significant improvement (p < 0.05) in thousand kernel weight (9.1%) and subsequently grain yield (23.4%) compared to the control treatment. The Zn concentration in the wheat shoot during tillering (37.0–58.2 mg Zn kg−1) was higher than the other two growth stages (elongation (29.2–40.8 mg Zn kg−1) and booting (20.0–31.0 mg Zn kg−1)). While the highest Fe concentration in wheat shoots was observed at the stem elongation stage (98.5–268.8 mg Fe kg−1), then the booting stage (91.0–150.8 mg Fe kg−1) and finally the least absorption was at the tillering (80.0–120.0 mg Fe kg−1). Because of the high calcium carbonate, salinity and Zn- deficient soil of the experimental site, the Zn concentration in wheat grain was obtained in a range of 3 to 19 mg kg−1. The results clarified that the fertilizer application of 30 kg Zn ha−1 and 2.5 kg Fe ha−1 can be proportionally and simultaneously increased the concentration of Fe and Zn in wheat grain by 100%. Therefore, the soil application of 30 kg Zn and 2.5 kg Fe per hectare proposed for improvement in quantitative (619 kg ha−1 increase in wheat grain yield) and qualities (100% increase in grain Zn and Fe concentration and 8% increase in thousand kernel weight) indices of wheat yield in calcareous and saline soils. Tall wheatgrass is cultivated for pasture in marginal areas around the world due to its tolerance to abiotic stress including seasonal droughts and floods, as well as saline and alkaline soils. However, there is concern about its biomass productivity, which often does not exceed that of natural pastures. In this work we hypothesize that tall wheatgrass is a plant more sensitive to low P availability than commonly assumed. A glasshouse sand culture experiment was conducted to analyze morpho-physiological responses of tall wheatgrass to different P availability levels: 1 µmol L−1 phosphorus (severe deficiency, P1), 10 µmol L−1 phosphorus (representative value of soil solution in the region, P10) and 500 µmol L−1 phosphorus (full P supply, P500). Our results show that both limiting P conditions strongly decreased plant development and biomass accumulation, and altered above- and below-ground morphology, in comparison with P500 plants. The latter, in turn, had relative growth rate values comparable to those of other cultivated grasses under non-limiting conditions. In both P-deficient treatments, plant development was severely delayed starting from leaf number 3, even when P concentration in the pseudostem at early stages was similar or even higher than that of P500 plants. Our results suggest that developmental inhibition of tall wheatgrass at low P supply may be the consequence of a specific plant response to P concentration in soil solution, rather than to direct P starvation in plant tissues, and underlines the need of improvement of this species to enhance productivity in this environment. Zinc (Zn) deficiency and salt stress are well-known soil problems and often happen parallelly in cultivated soils. In this study, Zn-amino acid complexes (Zn-AAc) were used as a source of Zn to determine their effects on salt-induced damage in wheat plants. The bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cvs. Kavir) was supplied with Zn-glycine (Zn-Gly), Zn-alanine (Zn-Ala), and ZnSO4 as Zn sources at three salinity levels (EC 2, 4 and 6 dS m-). Salinity caused a significant decrease in shoot dry matter and grain yield of wheat, but this negative effect was significantly improved by the application of Zn-AAc. Salt stress decreased shoot and grain Zn concentration, but this reduction was lower in plants supplied by Zn-AAc. Calcium (Ca) and potassium (K) concentrations were increased in a shoot by salinity stress while decreased in grain. Sodium (Na) concentration decreased in shoot and grain by using Zn-AAc. At all of the salinity levels, wheat supplied with Zn-AAc had lower lipid peroxidation compared to those grown under the ZnSO4 source. Application of Zn-AAc increased the activities of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the roots of wheat plants in saline conditions. Introduction: Salinity negatively affects maize productivity. However, calcium lignosulfonate (CLS) could improve soil properties and maize productivity. Methods: In this study, we evaluated the effects of CLS application on soil chemical properties, plant physiology and grain quality of maize under salinity stress. Thus, this experiment was conducted using three CLS application rates, CLS0, CLS5, and CLS10, corresponding to 0%, 5%, and 10% of soil mass, for three irrigation water salinity (WS) levels WS0.5, WS2.5, and WS5.5 corresponding to 0.5 and 2.5 and 5.5 dS/m, respectively. Results and discussion: Results show that the WS0.5 × CLS10 combination increased potassium (K 0.167 g/kg), and calcium (Ca, 0.39 g/kg) values while reducing the sodium (Na, 0.23 g/kg) content in soil. However, the treatment WS5.5 × CLS0 decreased K (0.120 g/kg), and Ca (0.15 g/kg) values while increasing Na (0.75 g/kg) content in soil. The root activity was larger in WS0.5 × CLS10 than in WS5.5 × CLS0, as the former combination enlarged K and Ca contents in the root while the latter decreased their values. The leaf glutamine synthetase (953.9 µmol/(g.h)) and nitrate reductase (40.39 µg/(g.h)) were higher in WS0.5 × CLS10 than in WS5.5 × CLS0 at 573.4 µmol/(g.h) and 20.76 µg/(g.h), leading to the improvement in cell progression cycle, as revealed by lower malonaldehyde level (6.57 µmol/g). The K and Ca contents in the leaf (881, 278 mg/plant), stem (1314, 731 mg/plant), and grains (1330, 1117 mg/plant) were greater in WS0.5 × CLS10 than in WS5.5 × CLS0 at (146, 21 mg/plant), (201, 159 mg/plant) and (206, 157 mg/plant), respectively. Therefore, the maize was more resistance to salt stress under the CLS10 level, as a 7.34% decline in yield was noticed when salinity surpassed the threshold value (5.96 dS/m). The protein (13.6 %) and starch (89.2 %) contents were greater in WS0.5 × CLS10 than in WS5.5 × CLS0 (6.1 %) and (67.0 %), respectively. This study reveals that CLS addition can alleviate the adverse impacts of salinity on soil quality and maize productivity. To address salinity stress in plants in an eco-friendly manner, this study investigated the potential effects of salinity-resistant bacteria isolated from saline agricultural soils on the growth of cucumber (Cucumis sativus, cv. Royal) seedlings. A greenhouse factorial experiment was conducted based on a completely randomized design (CRD) with two factors, salinity at four levels and five bacterial treatments, with three replications (n = 3). Initially, fifty bacterial isolates were screened for their salinity and drought tolerance, phosphate solubilization activity, along with production of auxin, siderophore and hydrogen cyanide. Isolates K4, K14, K15, and C8 exhibited the highest resistance to salinity and drought stresses in vitro. Isolates C8 and K15 demonstrated the highest auxin production capacity, generating 2.95 and 2.87 µg mL− 1, respectively, and also exhibited significant siderophore production capacities (by 14% and 11%). Additionally, isolates C8 and K14 displayed greater phosphate solubilization activities, by 184.64 and 122.11 µg mL− 1, respectively. The statistical analysis revealed that the selected four potent isolates significantly enhanced all growth parameters of cucumber plants grown under salinity stress conditions for six weeks. Plant height increased by 41%, fresh and dry weights by 35% and 7%, respectively, and the leaf area index by 85%. The most effective isolate, C8, was identified as Bacillus subtilis based on the 16 S rDNA amplicon sequencing. This study demonstrated that inoculating cucumber seedlings with halotolerant bacterial isolates, such as C8 (Bacillus subtilis), possessing substantial plant growth-promoting properties significantly alleviated salinity stress by enhancing plant growth parameters. Coastal swamp forests fill ecological niches that provide valuable environmental services, yet their extent across coastal Louisiana has diminished from logging and saltwater intrusion. Previous reforestation attempts yielded mixed results, attributed to hydrological disturbances leaving regions of the coast vulnerable to environmental stress. Environmental conditions may be improving. In the Pontchartrain Estuary, the Caernarvon Freshwater Diversion (CFD) has pulsed Mississippi River water into lower estuary wetlands since 1991, and the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet Canal closure in 2009 lowered soil salinity further upstream in the estuary on the Maurepas Landbridge (MLB). However, how hydrological restoration impacts habitat restoration remains undocumented. The Pontchartrain Conservancy planted ~80,000 saplings from 2011–2021 in two regions (CFD, MLB) within the estuary. Species included Taxodium distichum (L.) Rich, Nyssa aquatica L. Nyssa sylvatica Marshal var. biflora, Acer rubrum L. var. drummondii (Hook. & Arn. ex Nutt.) Sarg. and Fraxinus pennsylvanica, though > 80% of the saplings planted were T. distichum. We assessed survival and growth for 7.3% of saplings. Survival differed between regions; survival was lower around the CFD (63%) and higher on the MLB (82%). Growth rates also differed; growth was higher in CFD (height: 0.18–0.69 m/yr; diameter 0.66–1.62 cm/yr) and lower in MLB (height: 0.00–0.44 m/yr; diameter 0.05–0.18 cm/yr). Growth varied temporally between areas, but trends were similar. Results indicate 1) hydrological restoration benefits coastal swamp reforestation, and 2) river water increased growth. As habitat restoration, including swamp reforestation, scales-up in Louisiana, these outcomes help resource managers and planners refine restoration goals and target areas to maximize restoration success. Salinity is an abiotic factor limiting plant fitness and therefore forest crop productivity, and salt-affected areas have been expanding throughout the world. Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi can improve the salt tolerance of woody plants, including Eucalyptus species To screen for salt-resistant Pisolithus albus (PA) isolates, 16 PA isolates were cultivated on modified Melin-Norkrans agar containing NaCl at concentrations of 0, 10, 20, and 30 dS m−1. The P. albus isolate PA33 had the greatest salt resistance under 10 and 20 dS m−1 NaCl, which are soil salinity levels in salt-affected areas of Thailand. We studied the effect of PA33 on Eucalyptus camaldulensis × E. pellita cuttings under salt stress (0 and 16 dS m−1) for 1 month. PA enhanced the growth of the Eucalyptus seedlings, as indicated by higher relative growth rates in height and root collar diameter of inoculated seedlings compared with non-inoculated seedlings. Moreover, the inoculated seedlings had less cell damage from NaCl, as indicated by significantly lesser leaf thickness and electrolyte leakage than the controls. These findings could lead to practices conferring socioeconomic and environmental benefits, as abandoned salt-affected areas could be reclaimed using such Eucalyptus seedlings inoculated with salt-tolerant ECM fungi. Aim: Estuarine vegetation routinely experiences natural tidal fluctuations and is highly vulnerable to extreme events such as heavy rainfall, leading to changes in plant population structure and adaptability. Genetic and epigenetic modifications are widely considered to be mechanisms of phenotypic variation, triggered in plants responding to extreme changing environments. However, understanding on correlations among genetic, epigenetic, and phenotypic variation of wild plant populations is still limited. Location: China. Methods: In this study, populations of the typical wetland clonal species Phragmites australis were selected from four estuaries along various latitudes in China. Genetic and epigenetic diversity and phenotypic variation of these populations were analysed. Results: Phenotypic variation of P. australis populations was the highest at Yellow River Estuary and the lowest at Min River Estuary. Across all estuaries, Genetic and epigenetic diversity was strongly linear‐correlated. Genetic diversity had significant correlations with variation in reproductive traits, whereas epigenetic diversity had significant correlations with variation in growth traits. Climatic factors of mean annual temperature and precipitation, as well as soil nitrogen and phosphorus, were negatively correlated with variation in genetic diversity, epigenetic diversity, and variation in reproductive traits of P. australis populations along latitudes. Variation in growth traits was negatively correlated with soil salinity, reflecting the limiting effect of salinity on plant growth. Main Conclusion: Our findings found that genetic and epigenetic variations may play different roles in phenotypic variation of P. australis populations along latitudes, the variation becomes greater when the climatic and edaphic conditions deteriorate. The findings shed new light on the adaptation and evolution of wetland plant populations along a large latitudinal scale, and may contribute to the revegetation of estuary wetlands. SUMMARY: Soil salinity is a major environmental stressor affecting agricultural productivity worldwide. Understanding plant responses to salt stress is crucial for developing resilient crop varieties. Wild relatives of cultivated crops, such as wild tomato, Solanum pimpinellifolium, can serve as a useful resource to further expand the resilience potential of the cultivated germplasm, S. lycopersicum. In this study, we employed high‐throughput phenotyping in the greenhouse and field conditions to explore salt stress responses of a S. pimpinellifolium diversity panel. Our study revealed extensive phenotypic variations in response to salt stress, with traits such as transpiration rate, shoot mass, and ion accumulation showing significant correlations with plant performance. We found that while transpiration was a key determinant of plant performance in the greenhouse, shoot mass strongly correlated with yield under field conditions. Conversely, ion accumulation was the least influential factor under greenhouse conditions. Through a Genome Wide Association Study, we identified candidate genes not previously associated with salt stress, highlighting the power of high‐throughput phenotyping in uncovering novel aspects of plant stress responses. This study contributes to our understanding of salt stress tolerance in S. pimpinellifolium and lays the groundwork for further investigations into the genetic basis of these traits, ultimately informing breeding efforts for salinity tolerance in tomato and other crops. The index of Erodible Fraction (EF) component against wind is well known as a criteria of soil wind erodibility. This study was conducted to estimate the index of EF by utilizing support vector machine (SVM), artificial neural network (ANN) and genetic algorithm (GA-ANN) methods. For this reason, 95 soil samples were collected 10 cm above the soil surface of Allahabad plain in Qazvin province. Then the percentage of aggregates with a diameter of less than 0.84 mm, pH, EC, soil saturation capacity, SAR, equivalent calcium carbonate, organic matter, clay, sand and silt were measured and used in SVM, ANN and GA-ANNs model construction and testing. Results revealed that the EF had a significant correlation at the level of 1% with five soil characteristics, including pH, EC, SAR, clay and organic matter. On the other hand, the ANNs model developed for EF prediction had higher accuracy (R2 = 0.49) than the GA-ANNs model (R2 = 0.37) and SVMs model (0.02). All models were approximately overestimated and the GMER values for SVMs, ANNs and GA-ANNs models were 1.11, 1.15 and 1.08, respectively. However, according to the Akaike information criterion (AIC), all of them had similar power model estimation. Although SVMs offer good accuracy and perform fast prediction in this study, it did not perform well. This issue may be related to the complexity of the relationship between EF and soil properties. Safflower is a climate-resilient, quality oilseed with high resistance to water scarcity, soil salinity, and frost-prone areas, and it has a wide range of applications in daily life, ranging from food to pharmaceutical to industrial. Adapting high-quality oil-content-producing safflower cultivars can help reduce costs and reduce precious foreign exchange in countries like Pakistan. Exotic germplasm imported from the United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS), consisting of 145 exotic safflower accessions and four local control cultivars were planted under semi-arid conditions in Faisalabad, Pakistan, during winter 2018-19 and 2019-20 season using an augmented design with unreplicated entries and replicated checks. Genotypic coefficient of variability (GCV) analysis revealed significant variation among the accessions of safflower for achene yield plant-1, heads plant-1, and branches plant-1. The Pearson correlation analysis revealed a significant but negative correlation between days to maturity and days to 50% flowering. The results revealed larger achene yields and earlier maturity in safflower planted in early winter. Biplot analysis found that five of the tested accessions had higher achene yield plant-1, while four of the other accessions had a higher percentage of oil than the control, which was the local safflower check-31, which had the highest oil content and best quality traits. Furthermore, the dendrogram revealed that four safflower accessions exhibited higher morphological uniqueness across the investigated traits during both years of study, which can be employed for future varietal development. With the increasing output of coal fly ash (CFA) and garden waste, it is of great significance for environmental protection and resource utilization to establish if it can be recycled. The saline soil is widely distributed in the coastal areas of northern China, with high salt content and poor physical and chemical properties, which seriously affects the development of local agriculture and forestry and causes the waste of arable land. If CFA and garden waste compost (GWC) can be applied to saline soil improvement, it not only improves the local soil problem, but also helps environmental protection. Leaching salt is an important measure to reduce salt content in saline-alkali soil. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of CFA and GWC on salt leaching of coastal saline-alkali soil through a soil column simulation test. The use of CFA and GWC promoted leaching and reduced leaching time. The addition of CFA and GWC to the soil suppressed the increase of HCO3- and CO32- during leaching, but increased the salt ion content of the soil after leaching. The addition of CFA to the soil reduced the ion retention of GWC in the soil, but the application of CFA and GWC had no significant effect on the leaching sequence of salt ions. CFA and GWC added to the soil improved the physicochemical properties and the quality of saline soils, but GWC was less effective than CFA in improving soil physicochemical properties. Application of CFA reduced the leaching time of soil salt ions by about 25%, as well as reduced the pH, EC, SAR, and total salt ion content of the soil by 2.18%, 20.83%, 56.63%, and 38.95%, respectively. Several irrigated agricultural perimeters have been established as a part of Tunisian strategy for optimizing the conservation of freshwater and providing alternative water sources. In this work, olive trees were cultivated in a small scale, irrigated with treated wastewater (TWW) from three different industrial wastewater treatment stations and compared with tap water used as a control (GW). In order to evaluate the performance of using effluents characterized by its high metal contents for the irrigation of agricultural crops with high added value, two-year monitoring of soil and plants characteristics was conducted by the evaluation of different physicochemical parameters such as plant growth and soil salts and metal contents. The increase of nutrients such as potassium, nitrogen, phosphorus and sodium was registered in soil after the application of different TWWs compared to the GW. The metal contents in both soil and plants increased but without exceeding the permissible limits. No significant differences in plant growth for all irrigation sources as demonstrated by investigated plant height. The absence of E. coli, Streptococcus and Total coliform in TWWs verified the safe microbial aspect on future olive fruits. Results based on the evaluation of different physicochemical properties of soil, plants growth and characteristics suggest the possibility of a brief reuse of TWWs in the irrigation of the olive tree. Soil acidity and salinity stress significantly affect nutrient availability and uptake, as well as the growth, development, and yield of maize plants. This research aimed to screen, characterize, and assess the ability of selected indigenous biofilm-forming rhizophosphate bacteria (BFRB) to produce growth factor and promote maize growth. Soil samples were collected from both acid ecosystems (AE) and saline ecosystems (SE). Thirty isolates of rhizophosphate bacteria were obtained based on the clear zone around colonies on selective Pikovskaya agar media. Subsequently, a qualitative biofilm test was conducted, resulting in the identification of 9 isolates of biofilm-forming rhizophosphate bacteria. Biochemical test was performed to asses phosphate solubility index (PSI) and production of indole acetic acid (IAA) and biological assays was performed to measure the effect of selected BFRB on maize growth characteristics. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with 10 treatments (control and 9 isolates of BFRB) and 3 replications. The findings revealed that all isolate has avaibility to membentuk biofilm dan mampu melarutkan P. three potential isolates of BFRB from both AE and SE significantly enhanced maize growth. Isolates PS-03, PN-05, and PC-04 from saline soils, as well as isolates NA-01, NG-04, and NF-04 from acid land, exhibited notable increases in root length, plant height, and dry weight compared to the control. For instance, isolates PS-03, PN-05, and PC-04 from saline soils increased maize height by 2160.87% and root length by 392.64%, and they also increased the dry weight of the plants by 20.50%. Similarly, isolates NA-01, NG-04, and NF-04 from acid soil increased maize height by 673.82% and root length by 220.29%, and they increased the dry weight of the plants by 12.57%. These findings suggest that these BFRB isolates hold significant potential for developing rhizophosphate biofilm biofertilizers to enhance maize productivity in marginal soils. Additionally, each of these bacteria produced IPF and IAA, which contributed to the significant increases in plant height and root length, and formed biofilms that were present on the roots of the maize plants. Purpose: Environmental stresses are a main disturbing factor influencing horticultural productivity around the world. It will affect all plants including resistant or non-resistant cultivars. So, it is important to find the better cultivars and to check the response to adverse environmental conditions. Research method: Thus, the present research was conducted to evaluate responses of different bearing status of pistachio cultivars including Kalleh-Ghochi (K), Ohadi (O) and Ahmad-Aghaii (A), grafted on Badami-Rize-Zarand as rootstock, for six consecutive years to soil salinity. Findings: ONbearing trees of 'Ahmad-Aghaii' showed the highest yield, followed by 'Ohadi' and 'Kalleh-Ghochi'. In addition, the lowest leaf temperature was observed with this cultivar. Although the highest nitrogen, sodium, carbohydrate, peroxidase and leaf temperature was obtained in ON-bearing trees, however, the lowest potassium and total phenol content indicated in OFF-bearing status. It was found a negative correlation between leaf potassium content and ABI, between leaf peroxidase activity and ABI and between leaf temperature and ABI. On the other hand, leaf temperature increased as leaf sodium content increased. Research limitations: There was no limitation. Soil salinity is one of the most devastating environmental impediments that poses a significant threat to agricultural practices hamper crop productivity worldwide. In the present study, a total of thirty finger millet genotypes were examined through in vitro screening at varying sodium chloride concentrations (0, 75, 175, 275, and 375 mM). Based on the morphological characteristics, visual salt injury (VSI) and salinity susceptibility index (SSI), two tolerant (TRY–1 and ML–365), two moderately tolerant (GPU—48 and GPU—28) and two susceptible (VL–146 and Indaf–9) genotypes were shortlisted. Further, the greenhouse illustrated the experiment to assess physiological and biochemical response at the seedling stage by imposing sodium chloride concentrations (0 and 375 mM). The results revealed that TRY–1 was on par among all the studied genotypes that exhibited a significant increase (P < 0.05) in phenotypic (germination percentage, shoot length, root length, and seedling vigour index) biochemical characteristics (contents of total chlorophyll, proline, phenolic, and flavonoids) and antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD and CAT) under varying salinity regimes indicating a strong defense mechanism against salinity-induced oxidative and osmotic stress. In contrast, Indaf—9 exhibited a significant decrease in all the growth and physiological traits and an increment in MDA and H2O2 content compared to other genotypes. In Indaf—9, MDA increased by 184% whereas in TRY—1, it increased by 105%. In contrast, proline content was enhanced as maximum in TRY –1 (239%) compared to Indaf—9 (191%) from 0 to 375 mM sodium chloride concentration. Amorphous silica (a-SiO2), found in rice husk ash, is a valuable material due to its high silica content, large surface area, excellent pozzolanic properties, and strong binding ability with cement. These characteristics make it ideal for use as a supplementary cementitious material and a sustainable alternative for the partial replacement of ordinary Portland cement. This study aims to optimize the recovery process of amorphous silica from rice husks cultivated under various soil conditions (normal, drought, saline, and acidic soils), which are experiencing significant fluctuations due to climate change in many rice-producing countries. Experiments were conducted on rice husks under different pyrolysis conditions at temperatures of 700 ℃, 800 ℃, and 900 ℃, with varying calcination durations. Through comprehensive analysis using Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), along with the evaluation of amorphous silica recovery efficiency, we identified the optimal conditions for producing amorphous silica from rice husks. The analysis revealed that the highest recovery efficiency was achieved at a pyrolysis temperature of 700 ℃ for 1 hour. Under these conditions, the recovery efficiencies were 87.9% for normal soil RHA, 96.5% for saline soil RHA, 94.8% for drought soil RHA, and 95.6% for acidic soil RHA. The phase structure, surface morphology, and particle size of the RHA-derived amorphous silica, ground to micrometer sizes, were found to be similar to commercial products such as ordinary Portland cement and silica fume. This study provides a foundation for scaling up the production of amorphous silica from rice husk ash on an industrial scale, considering the relationship between optimal recovery efficiency and the origin of the rice husk ash, thus contributing to the development of environmentally friendly construction materials. Halophyte shrubs, prevalent in arid regions globally, create saline fertile islands under their canopy. This study investigates the soil microbial communities and their energy utilization strategies associated with tamarisk shrubs in arid ecosystems. Shotgun sequencing revealed that high salinity in tamarisk islands reduces functional gene alpha-diversity and relative abundance compared to bare soils. However, organic matter accumulation within islands fosters key halophilic archaea taxa such as Halalkalicoccus, Halogeometricum, and Natronorubrum, linked to processes like organic carbon oxidation, nitrous oxide reduction, and sulfur oxidation, potentially strengthening the coupling of nutrient cycles. In contrast, bare soils harbor salt-tolerant microbes with genes for autotrophic energy acquisition, including carbon fixation, H2 or CH4 consumption, and anammox. Additionally, isotope analysis shows higher microbial carbon use efficiency, N mineralization, and denitrification activity in tamarisk islands. Limonium bicolor , known horticulturally as sea lavender, is a typical recretohalophyte with salt glands in its leaf epidermis that secrete excess Na+ out of the plant. Although many genes have been proposed to contribute to salt gland initiation and development, a detailed analysis of alternative splicing, alternative polyadenylation patterns, and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) has been lacking. Here, we applied single-molecule long-read mRNA isoform sequencing (Iso-seq) to explore the complexity of the L. bicolor transcriptome in leaves during salt gland initiation (stage A) and salt gland differentiation (stage B) based on the reference genome. We identified alternative splicing events and the use of alternative poly(A) sites unique to stage A or stage B, leading to the hypothesis that they might contribute to the differentiation of salt glands. Based on the Iso-seq data and RNA in situ hybridization of candidate genes, we selected the lncRNA Btranscript_153392 for gene editing and virus-induced gene silencing to dissect its function. In the absence of this transcript, we observed fewer salt glands on the leaf epidermis, leading to diminished salt secretion and salt tolerance. The Yellow River Delta (YRD) has the world's highest land formation rate. However, soil salinization has caused severe land degradation in the region. Understanding the distribution of soil salinity and its variation is essential for saline soil management. This study combined soil salinity sampling data, remote sensing imagery, and layers of geographic environmental factors. Three different models, including Ordinary Kriging (OK), Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR), and Bayesian Maximum Entropy (BME), were used and compared to predict the soil salinity of two soil layers in 2006 and 2022. Then the spatial distribution characteristics and development trends of soil salinity in the YRD were analyzed. The results indicated that (1) The BME model is an optimal salinity prediction model that integrates soft data from multiple sources to perform nonlinear estimates. Compared to the OK and GWR models, the RMSE was reduced by up to 25% and 13%, respectively, and the greatest improvement in R2 was increased from 0.0534 and 0.2718 to 0.5569, respectively. (2) Soil salinity in the YRD shows a spatially increasing trend from the southwestern inland to the northeastern coast. Over the past 16 years, the salinization pattern has become more complex: soil salinization has been mitigated in the central and southern regions, with the average salinity decreasing from 1.03% to 0.86% and the salinization rate decreasing from 99% to 88%; and it has significantly intensified in the northern part of the study area near the old Yellow River channel and the Gubei Reservoir, and in some scattered inland areas. Continuous water and sediment regulation in the Yellow River basin and ecological management of natural reserves can generally alleviate soil salinization, but the risk of soil salinization can be increased by seawater erosion, inappropriate land use, and resource exploitation. Soil quality is defined as the ability of soil to maintain the soil environment and the biosphere. Due to the limitation of salt and alkali stress, soil quality can be reduced, which in turn affects agricultural production. Biochar is widely used in saline-alkali land improvement because of its special pore structure and strong ion exchange ability, while Piriformospora indica is widely used in saline-alkali land improvement because it can symbiose with plants and improve plant stress resistance. However, the synergistic effect of combined biochar application and inoculation of P. indica on the quality of saline-alkali soil and plant development is uncertain. Hence, we investigated the combined influences of biochar and P. indica on the soil physicochemical characteristics, as well as the growth and chlorophyll florescence of sorghum-sudangrass hybrids (Sorghum bicolor Ã--Sorghum sudane) in our study. The results indicated that after applying biochar and P. indica together, there was a considerable drop in soil pH, conductivity, Na+, and Clâ' concentrations. Meanwhile, the soil organic matter (SOM), available phosphorus (AP), and alkaline hydrolyzable nitrogen (AN) increased by 151.81%, 50.84%, and 103.50%, respectively, when the Bamboo biochar was combined with 120 ml/pot of P. indica. Eventually, sorghum-sudangrass hybrid biomass, transpiration rate, and chlorophyll content increased by 111.69%, 204.98%, and 118.54%, respectively. According to our findings, using P. indica and biochar together can enhance soil quality and plant growth. Precise prediction of soil salinity using visible, and near-infrared (vis-NIR) spectroscopy is crucial for ensuring food security and effective environmental management. This paper focuses on the precise prediction of soil salinity utilizing visible and near-infrared (vis-NIR) spectroscopy, a critical factor for food security and effective environmental management. The objective is to utilize vis-NIR spectra alongside a multiple regression model (MLR) and a random forest (RF) modeling approach to predict soil salinity across various land use types, such as farmlands, bare lands, and rangelands accurately. To this end, we selected 150 sampling points representatives of these diverse land uses. At each point, we collected soil samples to measure the soil salinity (ECe) and employed a portable spectrometer to capture the spectral reflectance across the full wavelength range of 400 to 2400 nm. The methodology involved using both individual spectral reflectance values and combinations of reflectance values from different wavelengths as input variables for developing the MLR and RF models. The results indicated that the RF model (RMSE = 4.85 dS m-1, R2 = 0.87, and RPD = 3.15), utilizing combined factors as input variables, outperformed others. Furthermore, our analysis across different land uses revealed that models incorporating combined input variables yielded significantly better results, particularly for farmlands and rangelands. This study underscores the potential of combining vis-NIR spectroscopy with advanced modeling techniques to enhance the accuracy of soil salinity predictions, thereby supporting more informed agricultural and environmental management decisions. Background: Soil salinity is one of the major abiotic stresses that threatens crop growth. Cotton has some degree of salt tolerance, known as the "pioneer crop" of saline-alkali land. Cultivation of cotton is of great significance to the utilization of saline-alkali land and the development of cotton industry. Gossypium hirsutum and G. barbadense, as two major cotton species, are widely cultivated worldwide. However, until recently, the regulatory mechanisms and specific differences of their responses to salt stress have rarely been reported. Results: In this study, we comprehensively compared the differences in the responses of G. hirsutum acc. TM-1 and G. barbadense cv. Hai7124 to salt stress. The results showed that Hai7124 exhibited better growth than did TM-1 under salt stress, with greater PRO content and antioxidant capability, whereas TM-1 only presented greater K+ content. Transcriptome analysis revealed significant molecular differences between the two cotton species in response to salt stress. The key pathways of TM-1 induced by salt are mainly related to growth and development, such as porphyrin metabolism, DNA replication, ribosome and photosynthesis. Conversely, the key pathways of Hai7124, such as plant hormone signal transduction, MAPK signaling pathway-plant, and phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, are mainly related to plant defense. Further comparative analyses of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) revealed that antioxidant metabolism, abscisic acid (ABA) and jasmonic acid (JA) signalling pathways were more strongly activated in Hai7124, whereas TM-1 was more active in K+ transporter-related genes and ethylene (ETH) signalling pathway. These differences underscore the various molecular strategies adopted by the two cotton species to navigate through salt stress, and Hai7124 responded more strongly to salt stress, which explains the potential reasons for the greater salt tolerance of Hai7124. Finally, we identified 217 potential salt tolerance-related genes, 167 of which overlapped with the confidence intervals of significant SNPs identified in previous genome-wide association studies (GWASs), indicating the high reliability of these genes. Under the sufficient nitrogen supply, it is of great significance to investigate the law of biomass allocation, root morphological traits, and the salt absorption capacity of euhalophytes to evaluate their biological desalination in saline soil. Although the curvilinear responses of biomass accumulation and root morphology in response to soil salinity have been recognized, these perceptions are still confined to the descriptions of inter-treatment population changes and lack details on biomass allocation in organs at an individual level. In this study, Suaeda salsa was grown in root boxes across a range of soil salt levels. The study showed that their growth and development were significantly affected by soil soluble salts. The law of biomass allocation was described as follows: increased soil soluble salts significantly increased the leaf mass ratio and decreased the stem mass ratio, and slightly increased the root mass ratio among treatments. For individuals at each treatment, leaf mass ratio > stem mass ratio > root mass ratio, except in the control treatment at the flower bud and fruit stages. Biomass responses of the control treatment indicated that salt was not rigorously required for Suaeda salsa in the presence of an adequate nitrogen supply, as verified by the correlation between biomass, nitrogen, and soil soluble salt. Salt could significantly inhibit the growth of Suaeda salsa (P<0.01), whereas nitrogen could significantly promote its growth (P<0.01). Root morphology in response to soil soluble salts showed that salt acquisition by the root was highest at a salt level of 0.70%, which corresponds to light saline soil. Soil salinity is a major abiotic stress that limits the growth and productivity of horticultural crops. Most fruit crops are glycophytes, and their production is adversely affected by salt stress. The key findings indicate that salinity reduces several plant growth parameters such as shoot and root length, number of leaves, plant biomass and relative water content as well as biochemical parameters such as photosynthetic pigments and proline. Physiological results show decreased water absorption, nutrient imbalances such as changes in ion concentrations and hormone levels and increased oxidative stress. Several mitigation strategies are recommended, such as the use of salt-tolerant rootstocks, application of growth regulators and soil amendments to enhance salt tolerance in tropical fruit crops. Soil salinity is a serious concern for tomato culture, affecting both yield and quality parameters. Although some genes involved in tomato salt tolerance have been identified, their genetic diversity has been rarely studied. In the present study, we assessed salt tolerance‐related traits at juvenile and adult stages in a large core collection and identified salt tolerance quantitative trait loci (QTLs) by genome‐wide association study (GWAS). The results suggested that a major QTL is involved in leaf sodium accumulation at both physiological stages. We were able to identify the underlying candidate gene, coding for a well‐known sodium transporter, called SlHKT1.2. We showed that an eQTL for the expression of this gene in roots colocalized with the above ground sodium content QTL. A polymorphism putatively responsible for its variation was identified in the gene promoter. Finally, to extend the applicability of these results, we carried out the same analysis on a test‐cross panel composed of the core collection crossed with a distant line. The results indicated that the identified QTL retained its functional impact even in a hybrid genetic context: this paves the way for its use in breeding programs aimed at improving salinity tolerance in tomato cultivars. High salinity reduces agriculture production and quality, negatively affecting the global economy. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) enhance plant metabolism and abiotic stress tolerance. This study investigated the effects of 2 g/L foliar Zinc oxide NPs on Zea mays L. plants to ameliorate 150 mM NaCl-induced salt stress. After precipitation, ZnO-NPs were examined by UV–visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, and particle size distribution. This study examined plant height, stem diameter (width), area of leaves, chlorophyll levels, hydrolyzable sugars, free amino acids, protein, proline, hydrogen peroxide, and malondialdehyde. Gas chromatographic analysis quantified long-chain fatty acids, and following harvest, leaves, stalks, cobs, seeds, and seeds per row were weighed. The leaves' acid and neutral detergent fibers were measured along with the seeds' starch, fat, and protein. Plant growth and chlorophyll concentration decreased under salt stress. All treatments showed significant changes in maize plant growth and development after applying zinc oxide NPs. ZnO-NPs increased chlorophyll and lowered stress. ZnO-NPs enhanced the ability of maize plants to withstand the adverse conditions of saline soils or low-quality irrigation water. This field study investigated the effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles on maize plant leaves when saline water is utilized for growth season water. Soil salinization is an important factor that jeopardizes agricultural production and ecological environment. Rapid and accurate acquisition of soil salinity information in farmland is instructive for sustainable agricultural development and land resource management. In order to improve the accuracy of soil salinity prediction under vegetation cover conditions by satellite remote sensing, the eighth Agricultural Division of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps was taken as the study area in this study. The soil surface (0-20 cm) samples were collected under high fractional vegetation cover conditions in July and August 2023, respectively, and synchronized satellite images were acquired. Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 and environment variables provide 3 different types of explanatory variables. The dataset A (polarization indices, spectral indices), dataset B (polarization indices, environment variables), dataset C (spectral indices, environment variables), and dataset D (polarization indices, spectral indices, environment variables) were constructed separately from different combinations of Sentinel-1 radar information, Sentinel-2 multispectral information and environment variables. Then, three integrated machine learning algorithms, namely adaptive boosting (AdaBoost), gradient boost regression Tree (GBRT) and eXtreme gradient boosting tree (XGBoost), were applied to construct soil salinity inversion models based on different datasets. The results showed that Models constructed from dataset B (polarization indices and environmental variables) and C (spectral indices and environmental variables) achieved higher prediction accuracies compared to dataset A (polarization indices and spectral indices). It is shown that when environmental variables are involved in the prediction of soil salinity, the model effect is more effective than the model constructed by polarization and spectral indices suggesting that the model effects are more effective than those constructed from polarization and spectral indices. When environmental variables were applied to dataset D together with polarization indices and spectral indices, the prediction accuracy of all models constructed based on dataset D are generally higher than those constructed on dataset A, B, and C, and that the synergy of environmental variables with radar data and multispectral data can effectively improve the model accuracy. Radar information, spectral information and environmental variables are complementary in soil salinity prediction. Based on the correlation analysis, it can be seen that radar information, spectral information and environmental variables can be used as effective characteristic variables for soil salinity prediction in the study area. It was worth noting that the correlation between topographic factors and land surface temperature with soil salinity is relatively high, with the highest correlation between elevation and surface soil salinity (r = 0.52). Considering the spatial characteristics of soil salinity distribution in the study area can provide effective characteristic variables for soil salinity prediction under vegetation cover condition. In all datasets, the XGBoost had the best performance, followed by GBRT, and the AdaBoost had a large validation error. The D-XGBoost model having the highest accuracy with a validation set R² of 0.72, an RMSE of 2.40 g/kg, and an MAE of 1.29 g/kg. The integrated learning algorithms based on the combination of multiple source variables has a strong nonlinear fitting ability. XGBoost can better model the complex nonlinear relationship between soil salinity content and remote sensing information, environmental factors, and obtain ideal fitting results. The joint application of multi-source remote sensing data and integrated learning algorithms can obtain the ideal soil salinity inversion accuracy under vegetation cover conditions. This study aimed to investigate the biodegradation behaviour of starch/nanocellulose/black tea extract (SNBTE) films in a 30-day soil burial test. The SNBTE films were prepared by mixing commercial starch, nanocellulose (2, 4, and 6%), and an aqueous solution of black tea extract by a simple mixing and casting process. The chemical and morphological properties of the SNBTE films before and after biodegradation were characterized using the following analytical techniques such as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The changes in soil composition, namely pH, electrical conductivity (EC), moisture content, water holding capacity (WHC), soil respiration, total nitrogen, weight mean diameter (MDW), and geometric mean diameter (GMD), as a result of the biodegradation process, were also estimated. The results showed that the films exhibited considerable biodegradability (35–67%) within 30 days while increasing soil nutrients. The addition of black tea extract reduced the biodegradation rate due to its polyphenol content, which likely resulted in a reduction in microbial activity. The addition of nanocellulose (2–6% weight of starch) increased the tensile strength, but decreased the elongation at break of the films. These results suggest that starch nanocellulose and SNBTE films are not only biodegradable under soil conditions but also positively contribute to soil health, highlighting their potential as an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional plastic films in the packaging industry. Water scarcity and droughts are among the most challenging issues worldwide, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions like Saudi Arabia. Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.), a major crop in Saudi Arabia, is being significantly affected by water scarcity, soil salinity, and desertification. Alternative water sources are needed to conserve freshwater resources and increase date palm production in Saudi Arabia. On the other hand, Saudi Arabia has a significant number of aquaculture farms that generate substantial amounts of wastewater, which can be utilized as an alternative source of irrigation. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the potential of aquaculture wastewater as an alternative irrigation source for date palm orchards. Aquaculture wastewater was collected from 12 different farms (Al-Kharj, Al-Muzahmiya, and Al-Qassim regions, Saudi Arabia) and its quality was analyzed. The impacts of aquaculture wastewater irrigation on soil quality, nutrient availability, nutrient status of date palm trees, and dates fruit quality were assessed in comparison to source water (freshwater) irrigation at Al-Kharj, Al-Muzahmiya, and Al-Qassim regions. The water quality analyses showed higher salinity (EC = 3.31 dSm−1) in farm Q3, while all other farms demonstrated no salinity, sodicity, or alkalinity hazards. Moreover, the aquaculture wastewater irrigation increased soil available P, K, NO3−–N, and NH4+–N by 49.31%, 21.11%, 33.62%, and 52.31%, respectively, compared to source water irrigation. On average, date palm fruit weight, length, and moisture contents increased by 26%, 23%, and 43% under aquaculture wastewater irrigation compared to source water irrigation. Further, P, K, Fe, Cu, and Zn contents in date palm leaf were increased by 19.35%, 34.17%, 37.36%, 38.24%, and 45.29%, respectively, under aquaculture wastewater irrigation compared to source water irrigation. Overall, aquaculture wastewater irrigation significantly enhanced date palm plant growth, date palm fruit quality, and soil available nutrients compared to freshwater irrigation. It was concluded that aquaculture wastewater can be used as an effective irrigation source for date palm farms as it enhances soil nutrient availability, date palm growth, and date fruit yield and quality. The findings of this study suggest that aquaculture wastewater could be a viable alternative for conserving freshwater resources and increase date palm production in Saudi Arabia. AbstractThe study investigates the drying behavior and desalination effectiveness of porous ceramic tiles made from fired clay materials like bricks or pottery on soil columns initially saturated with saline solution. Evaporation kinetics experiments compared the drying of saline soil with and without a ceramic tile. For soil without a ceramic cover, salt precipitation formed an efflorescent crust that initially (t ∼ 30 h) reduced the evaporation rate. However, with continued drying, the tensile stress caused cracks in the crust, allowing increased evaporation through the cracks (t > 200 h). When covered with a ceramic poultice, the saline solution was wicked into the porous ceramic by capillary action. Rapid salt efflorescence was observed on the ceramic surface. The ceramic layer initially reduced the soil evaporation rate due to pore clogging caused by salt precipitation. The pore structure characteristics of the ceramics significantly impacted their desalination performance. After an initial fast drying period controlled by evaporation, a reduced drying rate was observed as salt clogging effects became dominant, especially for the low porosity ceramic (t ∼20 h). The porous ceramic poultices could effectively extract salts from the soil, but their desalination efficiency depended critically on their pore structure properties. An industrial-based clay ceramic with large and more connected pores (porosity 0.33) was found to be around 62% more efficient in removing NaCl than a handmade pottery with small pores (porosity 0.18). Soil salinity is a major abiotic stress limiting crop production globally. Oat (Avena sativa) is an annual cereal with a strong salt tolerance, a high yield, and nutritional quality, although the mechanisms underlying its salt stress response remain largely unknown. We examined the physiological and transcriptomic responses of A. sativa seedlings to salt stress in tolerant cultivar Qingyongjiu 195 and sensitive cultivar 709. Under salt stress, Qingyongjiu 195 maintained a higher photosynthetic efficiency, antioxidant enzymes activity, and leaf K+ accumulation but a lower Na+ uptake than 709. RNA-seq revealed 6616 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), including 4265 up- and 2351 downregulated. These were enriched in pathways like plant–pathogen interaction, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, and MAPK signaling. We specifically highlight DEGs involved in photosynthesis (chlG, CP47 psbB, COX2, LHCB) and antioxidants (trxA, GroES). Qingyongjiu 195 also appeared to enhance K+ uptake via KAT1 and AKT2 and sequester Na+ in vacuoles via NHX2. Additionally, HKT restricted Na+ while promoting K+ transport to shoots, maintaining K+/Na+. The expression levels of CAX, ACA, CML, CaM, and CDPK in Qingyongjiu 195 were higher than those in 709. Oats regulated Ca2+ concentration through CAX and ACA after salt stress, decoded Ca2+ signals through CML, and then transferred Ca2+ signals to downstream receptors through the Ca2+ sensors CaM and CDPK, thereby activating K+/Na+ transporters, such as SOS1 and NHX, etc. Our results shed light on plant salt stress response mechanisms and provide transcriptomic resources for molecular breeding in improving salt tolerance in oats. Soil microorganisms play a crucial role in the plant invasion process, acting as both drivers of and responders to plant invasion. However, the effects of plant invasion on the complexity and stability of co-occurrence networks of soil microbial communities remain unclear. Here, we investigated how the invasion of Spartina alterniflora affected the diversity, composition, and co-occurrence networks of soil bacterial and fungal communities in the Yellow River Delta, China. Compared to the native plant (Suaeda salsa), S. alterniflora invasion decreased the α-diversity of soil bacterial communities but did not affect that of fungal communities. The β-diversity of soil bacterial and fungal communities under S. salsa and S. alterniflora habitats also differed dramatically. S. alterniflora invasion increased the relative abundance of the copiotrophic phylum Bacteroidota, whereas decreased the relative abundances of the oligotrophic phyla Acidobacteriota and Gemmatimonadota. Additionally, the relative abundance of Chytridiomycota, known for its role in degrading recalcitrant organic matter, increased substantially within the soil fungal community. Functional predictions revealed that S. alterniflora invasion increased the relative abundance of certain soil bacteria involved in carbon and nitrogen cycling, including aerobic chemoheterotrophy, nitrate reduction, and nitrate respiration. More importantly, S. alterniflora invasion reduced the complexity and stability of both soil bacterial and fungal community networks. The shifts in soil microbial community structure and diversity were mainly induced by soil available nutrients and soil salinity. Overall, our study highlights the profound impacts of S. alterniflora invasion on soil microbial communities, which could further indicate the modification of ecosystem functioning by invasive species. In cold regions, saline soils can cause dissolution, settlement, and salt expansion of the roadbed under the influence of freeze–thaw cycles, so they need to be stabilized during road construction. In this study, lime, fly ash (FA), and polyacrylamide (PAM) were used to stabilize sulfate saline soils, and the stabilized saline soils were subjected to the unconfined compressive strength test (UCS), splitting test, and freeze–thaw cycle tests (FTs). The stabilization mechanism of the three materials on saline soils was also studied via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The test results showed that the addition of lime, FA, and PAM to saline soils can improve the mechanical properties and frost resistance of saline soils. After 28 d of curing, the UCS of FA-, PAM-, and lime-stabilized saline soils increased by at least 55%, 23%, and 1068%, respectively, and the splitting strength increased by at least 161%, 75%, and 2720%, respectively. After five freeze–thaw cycles, the residual strength ratios (BDRs) of the UCS of L2 (lime 8%), F2 (FA 11%), and P2 (PAM 1%) stabilized soils and saline soils were 71.78%, 56.42%, 39.05%, and 17.95%, respectively, and the decreasing trend tended to be stable. Soil salinity poses a significant threat to agricultural productivity, impacting the growth and yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants. This study investigates the potential of melatonin (MT; 100 µM) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S; 200 µM sodium hydrosulfide, NaHS) to confer the tolerance of wheat plants to 100 mM NaCl. Salinity stress induced the outburst of reactive oxygen species (ROS) resulting in damage to the chloroplast structure, growth, photosynthesis, and yield. Application of either MT or NaHS augmented the activity of antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels, upregulated the expression of Na+ transport genes (SOS1, SOS2, SOS3, NHX1), resulting in mitigation of salinity stress. Thus, improved stomatal behavior, gas-exchange parameters, and maintenance of chloroplast structure resulted in enhanced activity of the Calvin cycle enzymes and overall enhancement of growth, photosynthetic, and yield performance of plants under salinity stress. The use of DL-propargylglycine (PAG, an inhibitor of hydrogen sulfide biosynthesis) and p-chlorophenyl alanine (p-CPA, an inhibitor of melatonin biosynthesis) to plants under salt stress showed the comparative necessity of MT and H2S in mitigation of salinity stress. Independent lightning rods are often installed in substation grounding systems for lightning protection. The concentrated discharge channel formed when a lightning current flows to the ground through a grounding electrode will cause electromagnetic interference to the directly buried secondary cable. And the three-dimensional structure of the discharge channel will affect the transient electromagnetic field distribution, thereby affecting the electromagnetic transients on cable shields. In order to explore the influence of soil discharge phenomena on the electromagnetic interference of the directly buried secondary cable, in this paper, we carried out experiments on cables in two different grounding modes, single-ended and double-ended grounding, and captured image of soil discharge channels. The results show that the cable grounding mode will affect the coupling mode that causes the shielding layer current. The relative spatial position of the soil discharge channel and the cable has a significant impact on the magnitude of the shielding layer current under both grounding modes. This study investigates the salt-coping strategies of two plant species under varying salinity levels: New Zealand spinach species grown at three salinity levels (i.e., 0, 100, and 200 mM NaCl) and three varieties of quinoa, i.e., "Vikinga", "Dave 407" and "Red Head", grown with or without salt (i.e., 0 and 100 mM NaCl). The plants were grown on glass fiber sheets (rhizoslides) under controlled laboratory conditions. The relationship between transpiration rate, salinity, and root architecture was analyzed for each species. The root apparatus of New Zealand spinach was significantly more developed in plants grown at 100 mM NaCl compared to both 200 mM NaCl and control. The quinoa varieties responded differently to the increasing salt concentrations, with salt-treated "Red Head" plants significantly reducing their total root length and salt-treated "Vikinga" significantly reducing its lateral roots compared to the controls. Salt concentration near New Zealand spinach roots was lower compared to areas without roots, suggesting active salt uptake. In contrast, quinoa rhizoslides exhibited higher salt concentration in proximity to the roots, indicative of salt exclusion. The study provides insights into the adaptation and tolerance mechanisms of these two species to salinity, elucidating the mechanisms by which plants regulate their sodium uptake and root growth. The obtained results suggest that not only the selection of appropriate plant species (halophytes), but also varieties, plays a crucial role in improving crop productivity in salt-affected areas. Sweet sorghum is an important sugar crop and forage with a strong tolerance to soil salinity. We have previously analyzed the ion accumulation traits and transcriptome of a sweet sorghum cultivar under NaCl treatments. However, the mechanisms underlying Na+, K+, Cl−, and NO3− transports and the osmotic adjustment of sweet sorghum under salt stresses need further investigations. In this study, the growth, photosynthesis, inorganic ion and organic solute contents, and leaf osmotic adjustment ability of the sweet sorghum cultivars "Lvjuren" and "Fengtian" under NaCl treatments were determined; meanwhile, the expressions of key genes associated with the Na+, K+, Cl−, and NO3− transport were analyzed using the qRT-PCR method. The results showed that NaCl treatments more severely inhibited the growth and photosynthesis of "Lvjuren" than those of "Fengtian". After NaCl treatments, "Fengtian" could more efficiently restrict the overaccumulation of Na+ and Cl− in leaf blades than "Lvjuren" by withholding large amounts of Na+ in the roots or reserving high quantities of Cl− in the leaf sheaths, which could be attributed to the upregulated expressions of SbNHX2, SbHKT1;4, SbHKT1;5, SbCLCc, and SbCLCg or the downregulated expression of SbNPF6.4. "Fengtian" exhibited significantly lower leaf osmotic potential but higher leaf water potential and turgor pressure under NaCl treatments, suggesting that the former possessed a stronger osmotic ability than the latter. The contents of K+, NO3−, soluble sugar, and betaine in leaf blades, as well as the contributions of these osmolytes to the leaf osmotic potential, in "Fengtian" were significantly higher than those in "Lvjuren". In addition, the upregulated expressions of SbAKT1, SbHAK5, SbSKOR, SbNPF3.1, SbNPF6.3, and SbNPF7.3 should be responsible for maintaining K+ and NO3− homeostasis under NaCl treatment. The precise quantification of soil salinity and the spatial distribution are paramount for proficiently managing and remediating salinized soils. This study aims to explore a pioneering methodology for forecasting soil salinity by combining the spectroscopy of soda saline–alkali soil with crack characteristics, thereby facilitating the ground-based remote-sensing inversion of soil salinity. To attain this objective, a surface cracking experiment was meticulously conducted under controlled indoor conditions for 57 soda saline–alkali soil samples from the Songnen Plain of China. The quantitative parameters for crack characterization, encompassing the length and area of desiccation cracks, together with the contrast texture feature were methodically derived. Furthermore, spectral reflectance of the cracked soil surface was measured. A structural equation model (SEM) was then employed for the estimation of soil salt parameters, including electrical conductivity (EC1:5), Na+, pH, HCO3−, CO32−, and the total salinity. The investigation unveiled notable associations between different salt parameters and crack attributes, alongside spectral reflectance measurements (r = 0.52–0.95), yet both clay content and mineralogy had little effect on the cracking process due to its low activity index. In addition, the presence of desiccation cracks accentuated the overall spectral contrast of salt-affected soil samples. The application of SEMs facilitated the concurrent prediction of multiple soil salt parameters alongside the regression analysis for individual salt parameters. Nonetheless, this study confers the advantage of the swift synchronous observation of multiple salt parameters whilst furnishing lucid interpretation and pragmatic utility. This study helps us to explore the mechanism of soil salinity on the surface cracking of soda saline–alkali soil in the Songnen Plain of China, and it also provides an effective solution for quickly and accurately predicting soil salt content using crack characteristics, which also provides a new perspective for the hyperspectral measurement of saline–alkali soils. Salt stress is a critical abiotic factor that adversely affects plant growth and productivity by impairing photosynthesis. This study explores the impact of exogenous ascorbic acid (AsA) on the photosynthetic performance of tomato seedlings (Solanum lycopersicum L. cv. Ligeer 87-5) under salt stress. Hydroponic experiments were conducted in a solar greenhouse, where tomato seedlings were subjected to the following five treatments: Control, NaCl, NaCl + AsA, NaCl + lycorine (LYC), and NaCl + LYC + AsA. Our findings demonstrate that salt stress significantly reduced chlorophyll and carotenoid contents, levels of chlorophyll synthesis precursors (5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), porphobilinogen (PBG), uroporphyrinogen III (Urogen III), protoporphyrin IX (Proto IX), magnesium protoporphyrin IX (Mg-Proto IX), protochlorophyllide (Pchl)), and essential elements (Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Mo, and P) in both roots and leaves. These reductions led to a substantial decline in net photosynthetic rate (Pn) and compromised photosystem II (PSII). In contrast, exogenous AsA application significantly enhanced the content of photosynthetic pigment precursors and essential elements, improved stomatal aperture and gas exchange efficiency, and boosted the photosynthetic performance of tomato seedlings under salt stress. Furthermore, AsA treatment mitigated the negative effects of salt stress by protecting PSII, increased light energy utilization efficiency, and alleviated both stomatal and non-stomatal limitations. The application of the AsA synthesis inhibitor LYC exacerbated the detrimental effects of salt stress, further reducing chlorophyll content and photosynthetic efficiency. In conclusion, exogenous AsA plays a vital role in enhancing the photosynthetic performance and stress tolerance of tomato seedlings under salt stress by stabilizing chlorophyll biosynthesis, facilitating essential element absorption, and optimizing stomatal function. In modern horticulture, biostimulants can be an effective alternative to traditional, industrial means of production. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of three biostimulants (Calgreen, Erathis, Greit VG) containing selected macronutrients (N, Ca), organic matter, and amino acids on the yield and quality of strawberries and their content of health-beneficial substances. In the comparative variant, the plants were treated with mineral fertilisers applied into the soil. In 2021, an experiment was conducted on a two-year-old strawberry plantation of the 'Rumba' cultivar located on a horticultural farm in northwestern Poland. The following parameters were assessed: the yield, weight, and firmness of fruits as well as their content of soluble substances, sugars, organic acids, phenolic compounds, and anthocyanins. The use of biostimulants caused a decrease in soil acidity and salinity. In comparison with the soil fertilisation variant, the number of flowers and fruits on the plants increased by 50% to over 100%, which translated into a significant increase in the yield. The fruits from the plants treated with the biostimulants several times were of better quality. Their average weight, firmness, and the content of soluble substances (also after being stored for several days) increased significantly. Nitrification is the core step of the soil nitrogen cycle and directly affects the nitrogen use efficiency in agricultural systems. Biochar and gypsum are two important soil amendments widely used in coastal saline farmland. However, little is known about their effects on nitrification and ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms. A one-year pot experiment with three treatments including biochar application (BC), gypsum application (SG), and no amendment (CK) was conducted, and the responses of the nitrification rate, amoA gene copies, and the diversity and community structure of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB) to biochar and gypsum were evaluated. The results indicated that biochar and gypsum application both resulted in alterations to the soil properties. They both had inhibiting effects on nitrification and AOB amoA gene copies, whereas they had no significant effect on AOA amoA gene copies. Biochar had no significant effect on the diversity indexes of AOA, but it significantly reduced the Shannon index of AOB. Meanwhile, gypsum had no significant influence on the diversity indexes of both AOA and AOB. Biochar and gypsum did not significantly affect the community structure of AOA but did induce changes in that of AOB. In detail, biochar significantly enhanced the relative abundance of the dominant cluster Nitrosospira, whereas gypsum led to a notable increase in the relative abundance of unclassified_o_Nitrosomonadales. The Shannon index of AOB had a significant negative correlation with soil TOC, TN, and NH4+ content, and soil pH was the first primary environmental factor that affected the AOB community structure. In conclusion, biochar and gypsum inhibited nitrification by suppressing the activities of AOB and changed the diversities and community structure of AOB by altering related soil properties. Salt-affected soils are a prevalent issue globally, resulting in a severe degradation of soil sustainability and plant productivity, reducing the area of agricultural land, and affecting food security. Therefore, eco-solutions and remediation approaches are needed. The needed remediation for salt-affected soil can be addressed via engineering, physical, chemical, or biological techniques. Salt-tolerant crops are normally used for the remediation of slight and moderate saline soil conditions. However, no crops, including salt-tolerant crops, can be cultivated in areas with extreme salinity levels (ECe 8–16 dS/m). Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of vermicompost and organic amendment on the cultivation of salt-tolerant crops (Sesbania rostrata) in severely salt-affected soil under field conditions in order to improve saline soil and crop productivity. The design of the experiment followed a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three treatments and four replications: T1, severely salt-affected soil (control); T2, severely salt-affected soil + vermicompost at a ratio of 25:75; T3, severely salt-affected soil + vermicompost + rice husk biochar + coconut coir at a ratio of 25:25:25:25. The results found that using vermicompost and organic amendment improved the soil quality, increased the soil fertility (organic matter and plant nutrients N, P, and K), and reduced the soil salinity. Sesbania rostrate could not grow in severely salt-affected soil (T1) alone, but could grow in the treatments with vermicompost and organic amendments (T2 and T3). The percentage of Sesbania survival per plot was also high in the treatments with vermicompost and organic amendments (T2 and T3). The highest growth rate, flower production, biomass, and root morphology of Sesbania rostrata were found in T3, with severely salt-affected soil + vermicompost + rice husk biochar + coconut coir at a ratio of 25:25:25:25 with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). Moreover, the Sesbania flowers treated with vermicompost and organic amendments have a higher nutritional value due to their minerals and vitamins than Sesbania flowers grown without using vermicompost and organic amendments. This study's findings suggest that incorporating vermicompost and organic amendments is a feasible and economical method for enhancing the quality of salt-affected soils in a sustainable manner. The results of this study demonstrate that utilizing vermicompost and organic amendments is a sustainable and economical strategy for enhancing the quality of salt-affected soils and improving yields in severely salt-affected areas, thereby increasing crop production and the nutritional value of the plants as well as helping to increase farmers' income. Excess soil salinity significantly impairs plant growth and development. Our previous reports demonstrated that the core circadian clock oscillator GIGANTEA (GI) negatively regulates salt stress tolerance by sequestering the SALT OVERLY SENSITIVE (SOS) 2 kinase, an essential component of the SOS pathway. Salt stress induces calcium‐dependent cytoplasmic GI degradation, resulting in activation of the SOS pathway; however, the precise molecular mechanism governing GI degradation during salt stress remains enigmatic. Here, we demonstrate that salt‐induced calcium signals promote the cytoplasmic partitioning of CONSTITUTIVE PHOTOMORPHOGENIC 1 (COP1), leading to the 26S proteasome‐dependent degradation of GI exclusively in the roots. Salt stress‐induced calcium signals accelerate the cytoplasmic localization of COP1 in the root cells, which targets GI for 26S proteasomal degradation. Align with this, the interaction between COP1 and GI is only observed in the roots, not the shoots, under salt‐stress conditions. Notably, the gi‐201 cop1‐4 double mutant shows an enhanced tolerance to salt stress similar to gi‐201, indicating that GI is epistatic to COP1 under salt‐stress conditions. Taken together, our study provides critical insights into the molecular mechanisms governing the COP1‐mediated proteasomal degradation of GI for salt stress tolerance, raising new possibilities for developing salt‐tolerant crops. The encroachment of woody shrubs in grass-dominated coastal salt marsh ecosystems has potentially influenced soil physical and chemical processes at various scales. Understanding the effects of shrub encroachment on those ecosystems requires assessments of the spatial heterogeneity in soil variables across multiple scales. Combined with GIS spatial tools and sampling data, we evaluated the vertical (0–80 cm) and spatial characteristics of soil pH and soil salinity (or electrical conductivity, EC) in a coastal wetland that experienced 40 years of shrub (specifically, the Tamarix chinensis species) encroachment. In order to obtain the information of the spatial patterns and scale domains of soil pH and EC, we employed the lacunarity analysis method. Furthermore, we utilized both Mantel test and Pearson correlation to identify their relationship. The results revealed that shrub encroachment had notable impacts on the magnitude and spatial patterns of soil pH and EC. These effects were driven by specific encroaching processes. Specifically, large shrub patches (SP) resulted in a significant rise in soil pH and a noteworthy reduction in soil EC. In addition, small shrub clusters (SC) caused a notable reduction in soil EC, but did not have significant impacts on soil pH. The impacts of shrubs on soil pH were primarily observed in 0–20 cm, whereas their effects on soil EC extended to deeper soil layers (e.g., up to 60 cm). Shrub encroachment also increased the landscape heterogeneity of both soil pH and EC, with the effects being more pronounced on soil EC. The lacunarity analysis revealed that the spatial heterogeneity of soil EC differed significantly among four depths, 0–20, 20–30, 30–60, and 60–80 cm, while the heterogeneity of soil pH varied significantly between two depths of 0–60 and 60–80 cm. Furthermore, soil pH and soil EC showed a strong spatial association, with a negative relationship observed between the two variables within each soil layer. Our study at the landscape scale highlights the opposite responses of soil pH and EC in saline-alkali wetlands to shrub encroachment. Soil salinity influences soil quality and other essential plant nutrients, reducing productivity and soil fertility in the Hatiya Upazila (Upazila is the second lowest tier of regional administration in Bangladesh), a coastal district of Noakhali, which is the soil saline vulnerable region of Bangladesh. This study determined the area’s soil salinity level, current crop production condition, and related soil salinity level of Hatiya Upazila. This research aimed to evaluate the effect of soil salinity on soil nutrients and other soil characteristics. To conduct this study, we randomly collected 78 soil samples from the 26 villages with three replicable samples from each sampling location and nine chemical characteristics of the soil samples evaluated. We mapped the soil salinity and other soil properties using the inverse distance weighting (IDW) interpolation techniques in ArcGIS software (version 10.8) environment. Also, we used Pearson’s correlation coefficient and linear regression models to evaluate the impact of soil salinity on the chemical properties of the soil. Results show that 38% of the study area has mild salinity, while 8% of the study area is affected by moderate salinity. In addition, around 4% of the study area is affected by high salinity. The reverse relation occurs when soil salinity is high and phosphorus, total nitrogen, organic matter, and carbon levels are low. According to statistical analysis, soil salinity (EC) is closely related to Na and K (r = 0.422). Soil salinity (EC) negatively affects OM, TN, P, and OC. The pH or sulphur content (EC) had no effect on the salinity of the soil. Among OCs, OM and TN have a favourable and strong relationship among themselves. These findings will benefit many stakeholders from the public and private sectors and local leaders in taking appropriate action to decrease the impact of soil salinity on agricultural production.Highlights: 1. Background and aim: Soil salinity presents major constraint for symbiotic root-microbe interactions and overall crop productivity. While compost amendments are effective, availability is limited in drylands where salinity is prevalent. As an alternative approach, we investigated the foliar application of signaling compounds. Methods: In this study, cowpea plants were evaluated under the treatments of foliar application of strigolactones (SL), salicylic acid (SA), SL and SA or SLSA, and coumarins (CMR), under soil amendment with gypsum (GP) and compost (CMP), and unamended natural saline soil as the control soil (CS) treatment. The microbiome structure in the rhizosphere, roots, leaves, and seeds were assessed, along with root traits, nodulation, arbuscular mycorrhizal (AMF) colonization, nutrient concentrations, and biomass yield. Results: Several treatments exhibited positive effects, with CMP and SLSA yielding the most comprehensive improvements. The SLSA outperformed CMP in enhancing nodulation and AMF colonization. Only CMP induced a significant shift in the rhizosphere and root microbiome structure, while the leaf and seed microbiomes remained stable. An AMF Rhizophagus in the rhizosphere and AMF Diversispora in the root endosphere of SLSA treatment, and Actinobacteria and Streptomyces in the root endosphere of the SLSA treatment showed increased abundance. The increased abundance of several microbial groups with SLSA indicated their effectiveness as beneficial keystone taxa, which appears to be an influential factor for impacting salinity tolerance in the legume. Conclusions: Overall, these findings confirm that the application of signaling compounds is a viable strategy for enhancing symbiotic root-microbe interactions and improving plant productivity in saline soils. Soil salinisation poses a significant threat to global agricultural production and food security. China is among the countries most severely impacted by soil salinisation. To investigate the improvement technology for saline–alkali stress in buckwheat, a typical multigrain crop in northwest China, a coupling regulation study using desulfurisation gypsum and polyacrylamide (PAM) was conducted in 2019 and 2020. Desulfurisation gypsum was applied at 0, 5.5, 11, 16.5 and 22 kg·ha−1, while PAM was applied at 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 kg·ha−1. The results demonstrated that applying 11 t·ha−1 desulfurisation gypsum and 30 kg·ha−1 PAM effectively reduces soil salinity and pH, averaging 81.79% and 6.07%, respectively. Furthermore, it did not cause soil heavy metal pollution and created the best soil environment for buckwheat growth. Among the models tested, the nonrectangular hyperbolic model was the most accurate in describing buckwheat's photosynthetic light response. The optimal treatment for achieving the best photosynthetic performance—measured by apparent quantum efficiency, maximum net photosynthetic rate, light compensation point, light saturation point, dark respiration rate, stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2 concentration, transpiration rate, leaf water use efficiency and yield—was achieved through applying 11 t·ha−1 desulfurisation gypsum and 30 kg·ha−1 PAM. Therefore, desulfurised gypsum and PAM should be applied at 11 t·ha−1 and 30 kg·ha−1, respectively, to improve buckwheat's adaptability to different light intensities while promoting its photosynthetic response in saline–alkali soils. This study provides an effective technical scheme for reducing salt and promoting the growth of crops under salinity stress, which is of great significance for improving salinity land in arid areas. Climate change is causing drastic reduction in crop yields around the globe due to increase in soil salinity, drought and heat stress. Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd) is regarded as a very significant food security crop considering the climate change scenario. Two quinoa genotypes (Puno and Titicaca) were cultivated on salt affected soil under drought stress with different sowing dates. Compared with early sowing, late sowing combined with salinity and drought stress caused drastic decline in plant growth and grain yield due to imposition of heat stress. Plant biomass and grain yield decreased by 26% and 39% in Puno, and by 34% and 49% in Titicaca under late sowing accompanied by salt and drought stress. Relative water contents and stomatal conductance of leaves declined in the same trend in both genotypes. Shoot Na+ concentration was the highest whereas K+ concentration was the lowest in both genotypes when drought and salt stress were combined under late sowing. Grain minerals (Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cu, K, P, N and Mn) and dietary contents (protein, lipids, carbohydrates and fibre) were decreased more under the combination of salinity and drought for late sowing as compared to early sowing. When salinity and drought stress were combined under late sowing, the contents of H2O2 and TBARS were 1.9 and 2.2‐fold higher in Puno and 2.4 and 2.6‐fold higher in Titicaca, respectively. The oxidative stress was mitigated by enhanced activities of antioxidant enzymes (CAT, SOD and POD) more in Puno than Titicaca. Plant biomass and grain yield were higher in Puno with better grain quality than Titicaca. Hence, this genotype should be cultivated on salt affected soils facing drought and high temperatures.
