7. A Novel Fully Informed Water Cycle Algorithm for Solving Optimal Power Flow Problems in Electric Grids

Abstract

Optimal power flow (OPF) is a key tool for planning and operations in energy grids. The line-flow constraints, generator loading effect, piece-wise cost functions, emission, and voltage quality cost make the optimization model non-convex and computationally cumbersome to solve. Metaheuristic techniques for solving the problem have emerged as a promising solution to solve the complex OPF problem. Recently, the water cycle algorithm (WCA), a method inspired by the observation of the water cycle process and the surface run-off model was proposed for solving optimization problems. This paper proposes an improved version of WCA that uses the concept of sharing global and local information among individuals to improve the exploitation ability compared with the standard WCA. The so called fully informed WCA (FIWCA) is tested against standard WCA and other metaheuristic techniques studied in the literature on IEEE 30 and 57 bus systems for various scenarios. Comparison and discussion regarding the performance and reliability of the metaheuristics approaches studied in literature are discussed. The obtained optimization results show that the better performance of proposed FIWCA comparing with the WCA and other algorithms especially in term of stability performance over replications. Consequently, it emerges as a tool for solving OPF in a reliable and efficient manner.

11. Development and Sensitivity Analysis of an Improved Harmony Search Algorithm with a Multiple Memory Structure for Large-Scale Optimization Problems in Water Distribution Networks.

Abstract

The continuous supply of drinking water for human life is essential to ensure the sustainability of cities, society, and the environment. At a time when water scarcity is worsening due to climate change, the construction of an optimized water supply infrastructure is necessary. In this study, an improved version of the Harmony Search Algorithm (HSA), named the Maisonette-type Harmony Search Algorithm (MTHSA), was developed. Unlike the HSA, the MTHSA has a two-floor structure, which increases the optimizing efficiency by employing multiple explorations on the first floor and additional exploitations of excellent solutions. Parallel explorations enhance the ability in terms of exploration (global search), which is the tendency to uniformly explore the entire search space. Additional exploitations among excellent solutions also enhance the ability of local searches (effective exploitation), which is the intensive exploration of solutions that seem to have high possibilities. Following the development of the improved algorithm, it was applied to water distribution networks in order to verify its efficiency, and the numerical results were analyzed. Through the considered applications, the improved algorithm is shown to be highly efficient when applied to large-scale optimization problems with large numbers of decision variables, as shown in comparison with the considered optimizers. Abstract

The generation rescheduling is described as the power generation shifting from one or more generators to one or more other generators as a preventive action to improve and maintain the security of the power system. Since, there is a direct link between security improvement and the lines overload under contingencies, by rescheduling generation, the transmission lines become more flexible and thus, the overload can be relieved. In this paper, contingency constrained optimal power flow (CCOPF) problem based on generation rescheduling by considering the uncertainty of photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine (WT), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) have been addressed. Water cycle algorithm (WCA) using its potential in finding optimal solution has been used in order to reschedule the generators and optimize the total fuel cost, power losses under contingency scenario, and system security. Moreover, stochastic approach has been proposed for taking into account the uncertainty of PV, WT, and PHEV. Overall performance index including the power and the voltage severity indices have been provided for determining overloaded transmission lines due to the lines' outage and consequently elimination of overloaded lines. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm has been evaluated on two IEEE-30 and IEEE 118-bus systems. The results are compared with the results of other classical and metaheuristic optimization algorithms. The simulations reveal that the WCA outperforms the other reported optimizers, and is more efficient and effective in improving security for power systems.
