New Rice for Africa ( NERICA) is a general name for interspecific rice varieties derived from a cross between the high-yielding Asian rice ( Oryza sativa L.) between locally adapted African rice ( Oryza glaberrima Steud.). Eight NERICAs were evaluated for cold tolerance ( CT) at the reproductive stage and compared with their O. sativa parents and three Japanese standard rice varieties over 3 years. Cold tolerance was evaluated based on the filled grain ratio ( FGR) after cold water irrigation. The FGR was greatly reduced by cold water irrigation. NERICA 1, 2 and 7 had higher FGR (51.9-57.9 %), while NERICA 6, 15 and 16 had lower FGR (6.2-14.5 %). NERICA 1, 2 and 7 were less affected by cold stress, with a 31 % mean reduction in FGR, while NERICA 6, 15 and 16 were greatly affected, with their FGRs being reduced by more than 80 %. NERICA 3 and 4 were moderately affected by cold stress, with about 45 % reduction rate in FGR. FGR significantly influenced the grain weights of the varieties with strong positive correlations (r = 0.83-0.91; P < 0.001), and thus, similar trends in grain weights were observed. Grain weights were reduced by 61.7-96.4 % under cold stress. NERICA 1, 2 and 7 showed significantly better performance than NERICA 3 and 4, while NERICA 6, 15 and 16 performed poorly under cold water irrigation. The Japanese varieties Koshihikari (very tolerant) and Ozora (moderately tolerant) were more affected by cold water irrigation than NERICA 1, 2 and 7. On the basis of the mean reduction rate (%) in FGR under cold stress, the varieties were classified as follows: NERICA 1, 2 and 7 as tolerant; NERICA 3 and 4 as moderately tolerant; and NERICA 6, 15 and 16 as susceptible to cold stress. However, NERICA 7 grain yields were lower under cold stress due to both greatly reduced number of panicles per plant and number of spikelets per panicle. A field study was carried out at the Kwara State University Teaching and Research Farm, Malete, to evaluate the response of vegetative growth and immature fruit yield of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench) to three fertilizer types and three times of application. The fertilizer types, used at the rate of 60 kgN/ha, were Kwasu organic-based fertilizer type 2 (KOBF-2), Aleshinloye organo-mineral fertilizer grade A (AOMF-A), and inorganic NPK 15-15-15 fertilizer (NPK), each applied at planting time, 2 weeks after planting (WAP), and 4 WAP. The trial was laid out in a 3 x 3 factorial arrangement in a randomized complete block design and replicated three times. All the data collected were subjected to analysis of variance, using the SAS statistical package, and the treatment means were separated using Duncan's Multiple Range Test at 5% probability level. The result indicated no significant differences in plant height, number of leaves/plant, number of fruits/plant, and the average length of the fruits between fertilizer types and application times. However, there were significant differences in leaf area/plant at 6WAP and fruit yield. Irrespective of the times of application, KOBF-2 gave significantly higher immature fruit yield (2.84 t/ha) than NPK (1.93 t/ha) and AOMF-A (1.72 t/ha). The results thus suggest that the new organic-based fertilizer formulated in this study (KOBF) deserves incorporation into national fertilizer programs for sustainable crop production.

Context. Childhood cancer survival has increased substantially over the past few decades. However, long-term side effects associated with cancer treatment have also risen. Especially thyroid gland disorders are common. Objective and Design. The present retrospective cross-sectional study aimed to investigate risk factors of long-term TD in survivors of leukemia-lymphoma. Subjects and Methods. The study included 44 acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and 26 Hodgkin lymphoma survivors (HL). Abnormal laboratory and pathological ultrasonographic findings of the thyroid gland were accepted as a thyroid disorder. The possible causes of thyroid disorders were investigated. Results. Long-term thyroid disorder was found in 40% of the patients. This rate was higher in HL patients than in ALL (65% vs. 25%). Thyroid disorder was significantly more common in patients who received radiotherapy to the neck (57% vs. 17%). Radiotherapy to the neck area was the only significant determinant for thyroid disorders in the regression models [OR 33.17, 95% CI (2.76-398.9) p = 0.006]. However, HL remained significantly associated with TD in the logistic model performed using cancer type [OR 19.25, 95% CI (2.39-155.3) p = 0.006]. Conclusions. The study showed that radiotherapy applied to the neck was an essential risk factor for long-term TD in the average 6-year follow-up of cancer survivors. However, we recommend that childhood cancer survivors should be followed closely for a long time since long-term endocrine side effects were reported during longer than six years follow-up periods. Zoonotic diseases accounts for about 75% of emerging infectious disease and can be devastating to both human and animal health globally. A subset of zoonotic diseases is referred to as "neglected zoonotic diseases - NZDs" as they mainly affect poor populations who live in close proximity to domestic or wild animals often in areas where access to health and adequate sanitary facilities are not available. Furthermore, underestimation of the burden of NZD has continually led to its further neglect in least developed countries such as Nigeria. Controlling zoonotic infections including NZDs in animals is crucial in reducing human infections. Veterinarians provides an understanding of the epidemiology of infectious diseases in animal population and are therefore integral for the overall reduction in global burden of NZDs worldwide. Due to the current lack of and in some cases weak involvement of Veterinarians in policy issues related to zoonotic diseases, there is need to elucidate their importance in NZDs control in Nigeria. This review therefore summarises the neglected zoonotic diseases so far documented in Nigeria and also highlight the important role of the Veterinarian in their prevention and control within both human and animal population. Important recommendations to strengthen the role of the public health Veterinarian for sustainable control of NZDs were made.

Introduction: There is a growing need for chondrocyte implantation for reconstructing cartilage defect. However, ossification of the implanted cartilage is a challenging problem. Implant-type tissue-engineered cartilage from human auricular chondrocytes is a three-dimensional implant type cartilage using PLLA as a scaffold for chondrocytes. Although there is a study which evaluated the ossification of this cartilage in subcutaneous area, there is no study which clarify the possibility of ossification in osteoinductive surroundings. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the possibility of the ossification of implant-type tissue-engineered cartilage using human auricular chondrocyte in an osteoinductive environment. Methods: Human chondrocytes were harvested from ear cartilage. After dispersion by enzyme digestion, they were put into either a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) or poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) scaffold, with collagen gel. Implant-type tissue-engineered cartilage was interposed between pieces of human iliac bone harvested from the same donor and implanted subcutaneously in nude rats. Scaffold without chondrocytes was used as a control. After 1, 3, and 6 months, ossification and cartilage formation were evaluated by X-ray, hematoxylin-eosin (HE) stain and toluidine blue (TB) stain. Results: There was no ossification of implant-type cartilage using human chondrocytes, even under osteoinductive conditions. HE staining showed that perichondrium formed around the constructs and chondrocytes were observed 6months after the implantation. TB staining showed metachromasia in every sample, with the area of metachromasia increasing over time, suggesting maturation of the cartilage. Conclusions: In conclusion, adjacent iliac bone had no apparent effect on the maturation of cartilage in implant-type tissue-engineered cartilage. Cartilage retention and maturation even in the presence of iliac bone could have been due to a scarcity of mesenchymal stem cells in the bone and surrounding area.

Myocardial bridging is a congenital coronary pathology described as a segment of coronary artery which courses through the myocardial wall beneath the muscle bridge. Although the myocardial bridging prognosis is benign, have been also reported sudden death in medical literature. ¬A 30-year-old married woman was found dead at her home. After local prosecutors' investigation the death was declared as suspicious and forensic autopsy was obliged. The left anterior descending coronary artery was detected embedded deeply in the myocardium 2 cm from its coronary ostial origin. There were no other pathology to explain death. We analyzed sudden death case occurred because of myocardial bridging and the pathophysiological mechanisms in the light of medico-legal literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objectives: Large or giant paraclinoid aneurysms have been treated with various strategies, including clipping, coiling, and parent artery occlusion (PAO). In addition, flow diverters (FDs) have been introduced for the management of these aneurysms. The aim of this study was to examine the management of unruptured large/giant paraclinoid aneurysms in Japan when FDs were being introduced by a nationwide survey., Methods: A total of 576 unruptured large/giant paraclinoid aneurysms treated in Japan between January 2012 and December 2016 were retrospectively studied., Results: Half of the large paraclinoid aneurysms were treated by coiling (50.3%), whereas giant aneurysms were occluded mainly by PAO (51.4%). A high nearly complete occlusion rate was achieved with clipping (94.1%), coiling (85.9%), PAO (82.4%), and FDs (77.6%). Coiling had higher risks of recurrence (28.3%) and retreatment (20.3%). Major procedure-related complications were observed in 9.7%. Ischemic complications were common in PAO (9.5%), with cranial nerve symptoms common in clipping (10.9%). All treatment modalities achieved good clinical outcomes (93.5-96.6%). Although not significant, pre-existing visual disturbance improved most frequently by clipping (53.7%), but also worsened most frequently by clipping (24.4%). Consequently, FD achieved a high occlusion rate with minimal complication and retreatment rates., Conclusion: All treatment modalities offer high rates of complete occlusion and good clinical outcomes. Coiling has the disadvantage of high rates of recurrence and retreatment. Clipping and PAO have the disadvantage of a high rate of major procedure-related complications; however, PAO can provide comparable treatment outcomes even in cases with refractory giant aneurysms. Background: In vitro, animal, and clinical comparative studies have revealed that combinations of rifampicin with antibacterial agents are effective in the treatment of biofilm-associated infections. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of rifampicin combination therapies compared with monotherapies without rifampicin in patients with orthopaedic implant-related infections., Materials and Methods: The clinical literature was comprehensively searched for studies assessing the effectiveness of rifampicin combination therapy in patients with orthopaedic implant-related infection. Identified studies were screened based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses flow diagram. The primary outcome was the cure rate and the secondary outcome was the incidence of adverse events. Subgroup analyses were performed based on causative organisms, antibacterial agents, and types of surgical intervention., Results: Twenty-seven studies were identified, including two randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and 25 cohort studies. Rifampicin combinations were associated with significantly higher cure rates than monotherapies in cohort studies, but not in RCTs. Subgroup analyses showed that rifampicin combinations were effective in patients infected with Cutibacterium and Staphylococcus spp.; in patients who underwent debridement, antibiotics, implant retention procedures; and in patients with one-stage revision. Moreover, combinations of rifampicin and fluoroquinolones were more effective than fluoroquinolones alone, while combinating rifampicin with other antibacterial agents showed no significant benefit. Combination treatment did not significantly affect adverse events in either RCTs or observational studies. Objective: To compare clinical outcomes of patients treated by female surgeons versus those treated by male surgeons., Background: It remains unclear as to whether surgical performance and outcomes differ between female and male surgeons., Methods: We conducted a meta-analysis to compare patients' clinical outcomes-including patients' postoperative mortality, readmission, and complication rates-between female versus male surgeons. MEDLINE, Embase, CENTRAL, ICTRP, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched from inception to September 8, 2022. The update search was conducted on July 19, 2023. We used random-effects models to synthesize data and GRADE to evaluate the certainty., Results: A total of 15 retrospective cohort studies provided data on 5,448,121 participants. We found that patients treated by female surgeons experienced a lower postoperative mortality compared with patients treated by male surgeons [8 studies; adjusted odds ratio (aOR), 0.93; 95% CI, 0.88-0.97; I2 =27%; moderate certainty of the evidence]. We found a similar pattern for both elective and nonelective (emergent or urgent) surgeries, although the difference was larger for elective surgeries (test for subgroup difference P =0.003). Mastication is controlled by central pattern generator in the brainstem and can be modulated by volition. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of chewing well on swallowing. Twenty-six healthy participants were instructed to eat 8, 12, and/or 16 g of steamed rice with barium sulphate under the following two conditions: chewing freely task (CF; chewing naturally in their usual manner) and chewing well task (CW; chewing the food with a request to "chew well"). We evaluated bolus transport and swallowing movement using videofluoroscopy and electromyography of the masseter, suprahyoid and thyrohyoid muscles. The chewing time and pharyngeal transit time (PTT) at the first swallow showed high reproducibility in both CF and CW. PTT for CW was significantly shorter and longer than CF in 12 and 16 g, respectively. In 12 g, CW increased the pharyngeal bolus velocity and decreased thyrohyoid EMG activity during swallowing compared with CF. In 16 g, the difference between CW and CF in the estimated swallowed bolus volume was positively correlated with that in upper esophageal sphincter transit duration. The present study examined the effect of ADHD-related traits, academic-achievement level, and giftedness label on elementary school teachers' and counselors' referral recommendations for assessment. 532 teachers and counselors were presented with one of 12 vignettes describing a hypothetical pupil. Participants were asked to report the likelihood they would refer the pupil for ADHD diagnosis and address them during a high-level interdisciplinary school-team meeting (HISTM). High ADHD-related traits (effect size 0.359) and low academic-achievement (effect size 0.070) and their interaction were significantly related to a higher likelihood of referral. Further analysis revealed that lower academic achievement was related to a higher likelihood of referral only when ADHD-related traits were not indicated (p < .005). The status of giftedness label was not found to be significant (p > .05). These findings indicate that mainly ADHD-related traits and, to a lesser degree, low academic-achievement influence teachers' decisions to refer pupils for ADHD diagnosis and address them in HISTM., Competing Interests: Declarations. Orthonairovirus haemorrhagiae (CCHFV) is a tick-borne virus of the Orthonairovirus genus. CCHFV nucleoprotein binds to the viral genomic RNA, which is essential for transcription and replication. Based on structural analyses, several residues located in positively-charged regions of CCHFV nucleoprotein have been indicated to be important for RNA binding. We investigated the effects of each residue on RNA binding using Orthonairovirus hazaraense (HAZV), a surrogate model for CCHFV, to address the lack of detailed investigations. RNA immunoprecipitation assay revealed that the four basic amino acid residues (R59, R178, K414, and K465) are critical for RNA binding. All of these residues are located within the same positively-charged region. Basicity of these residues was also found to be necessary for RNA binding. Recombinant HAZVs carrying RNA binding-defective mutants of nucleoprotein could not be rescued. We identified the critical residues for RNA binding of nairovirus nucleoprotein. This study provides new insights into a detailed binding model between nairovirus nucleoprotein and its genomic RNA., Importance: We sought to identify the important residues for RNA binding of nairovirus nucleoprotein using Orthonairovirus hazaraense, a surrogate model for Orthonairovirus haemorrhagiae. Background: This article presents the results of two studies investigating increased intra-individual variability (IIV) in the performance of individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), in two cognitive domains: numerosity judgments and quantitative and verbal reasoning., Methods: Study 1, a pre-registered experiment, involved approximately 200 participants (42.66% female; mean age: 36.86; standard deviation of age: 10.70) making numerical judgments at two time-points. ADHD-symptom severity was assessed on a continuous scale. In Study 2, we collected the data of approximately 3000 examinees who had taken a high-stakes admissions test for higher education (assessing quantitative and verbal reasoning). The sample comprised only people formally diagnosed with ADHD. The control group consisted of approximately 200 000 examinees, none of whom presented with ADHD., Results: The results of Study 1 revealed a positive correlation between IIV (distance between judgments at the two time-points) and ADHD symptom severity. The results of Study 2 demonstrated that IIV (distance between the scores on two test chapters assessing the same type of reasoning) was greater among examinees diagnosed with ADHD. In both studies, the findings persisted even after controlling for performance level., Conclusions: The results indicate that individuals with ADHD, v. those without, exhibit less consistent numerosity judgments and greater fluctuation in performance on verbal and quantitative reasoning. The measurement of the same psychological constructs appears to be less precise among individuals with ADHD compared to those without. We discuss the theoretical contributions and practical implications of our results for two fields: judgment and decision-making, and assessment.

The sternohyoid muscle depresses the hyoid bone, but it is unclear whether the muscle contributes to respiratory and swallowing mechanisms. This study aimed to clarify whether the sternohyoid muscle participates in the respiration and swallowing reflex and how the activity is modulated in two conditions: with airway stenosis and with a fixed sternohyoid muscle length. Electromyographic activity in the sternohyoid, digastric, thyrohyoid, and diaphragm muscles was recorded in anesthetized rats. The sternohyoid muscle activity was observed in the inspiratory phase and during swallowing, and was well coordinated with digastric and thyrohyoid muscle activity. With airway stenosis, the respiratory activity per respiratory cycle was facilitated in all assessed muscles but the facilitation of activity per second occurred only in the digastric, thyrohyoid, and sternohyoid muscles. With airway stenosis, the swallowing activity was facilitated only in the digastric muscle but not in the thyrohyoid and sternohyoid muscles. Swallowing activity was not observed in the sternohyoid muscle in the condition with the sternohyoid muscle length fixed, although increased inspiratory activity remained. The current results suggest that 1 ) the sternohyoid muscle is slightly activated in the inspiratory phase, 2 ) the effect of airway stenosis on respiratory function may differ between the upper airway muscles and diaphragm, and 3 ) swallowing activity in the sternohyoid muscle is not dominantly controlled by the swallowing central pattern generator but instead occurs as a myotatic reflex. NEW & NOTEWORTHY We found that the sternohyoid muscle was activated in the inspiratory phase. However, increased airway resistance had different effects on the extrathoracic muscles than on the diaphragm. The swallowing activity of the sternohyoid disappeared when the muscle length was fixed. These findings suggest that the sternohyoid muscle may be activated not by the swallowing central pattern generator but as a myotatic reflex.

At present, the efficacy and safety of many cancer therapies employing a sparingly-soluble tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) are compromised by excessive fluctuations in the drug concentration in blood. To mitigate this limitation, in this four-part study expandable, gastroretentive fibrous dosage forms that deliver drug into the gastric fluid (and into the blood) at a controlled rate for prolonged time are presented. The dosage form comprises a cross-ply structure of water-absorbing, high-molecular-weight hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) based fibers coated with a strengthening, enteric excipient. The intervening spaces between the coated fibers are solid annuli of dispersed drug particles in a low-molecular-weight HPMC-based excipient matrix. The central regions of the annuli are open channels. In this part, models are developed for dosage form expansion, post-expansion mechanical strength, and drug release. The models suggest that upon immersing in a dissolution fluid, the fluid percolates the open channels, diffuses into the annuli and the coated fibers, and the dosage form expands. The expansion rate is inversely proportional, and the post-expansion mechanical strength proportional to the volume fraction of the coating. Drug particles are released from the annuli as the surrounding excipient dissolves. The drug release rate is proportional to the concentration of low-molecular-weight HPMC at the annulus/dissolution fluid interface. In Part 1, we have introduced expandable gastroretentive fibrous dosage forms for prolonged delivery of sparingly-soluble tyrosine kinase inhibitors. The expansion rate, post-expansion mechanical strength, and drug release rate were modeled for a dosage form containing 200 mg nilotinib. In the present part, the dosage form was prepared and tested in vitro to validate the models. Upon immersing in a dissolution fluid, the fibrous dosage form expanded at a constant rate to a normalized radial expansion of 0.5 by 4 h, and then formed an expanded viscoelastic mass of high strength. The drug was released at a constant rate over a day. For comparison, a particle-filled gelatin capsule with the same amount of nilotinib disintegrated almost immediately, and released eighty percent of the drug content in just 10 min. In this final part, the models of drug concentration in blood developed in Part 3 are validated on dogs. Both slow-release gastroretentive fibrous and immediate-release particulate dosage forms containing 200 mg nilotinib were tested. After administering, the fibrous dosage form expanded linearly with time in the stomach, to about 1.5 times the initial radius by 4 h. The expanded dosage form fractured after 10 h, and then passed into the intestines. The drug concentration in blood exhibited a broad peak with a maximum of 0.51 μg/ml and a width at half-height of 10.2 h. By contrast, after administering the immediate-release capsule the drug concentration in blood exhibited a sharp peak with a maximum of 0.68 μg/ml and a width at half-height of just 3.6 h. The experimental data validate the theoretical models reasonably. In this part, drug concentration in blood after ingesting slow-release gastroretentive fibrous dosage forms and immediate-release particulate forms is modeled. The tyrosine kinase inhibitor nilotinib, which is slightly soluble in low-pH gastric fluid but practically insoluble in pH-neutral intestinal fluid is used as drug. The models suggest that upon ingestion, the fibrous dosage form expands, is retained in the stomach for prolonged time, and releases drug into the gastric fluid at a constant rate. The released drug molecules flow into the duodenum with the gastric fluid, and are absorbed by the blood. The drug is eliminated from the blood by the liver at a rate proportional to its concentration. Eventually, the elimination and absorption rates will be equal, and the drug concentration in blood plateaus out. After the gastric residence time drug absorption stops, and the drug concentration in blood drops to zero. By contrast, after administering an immediate-release particulate dosage form the drug particles are swept out of the stomach rapidly, and drug absorption stops much earlier. The drug concentration in blood rises and falls without attaining steady state. Paramyxoviruses are reported to block apoptosis for their replication, but the mechanisms remain unclear. Furthermore, regulation of mitochondrial apoptosis by paramyxoviruses has been hardly reported. We investigated whether and how human parainfluenza virus type 2 (hPIV-2) counteracts apoptosis. Infection of recombinant hPIV-2 carrying mutated V protein showed higher caspase 3/7 activity and higher cytochrome c release from mitochondria than wild type hPIV-2 infection. This indicates that V protein controls mitochondrial apoptosis pathway. hPIV-2 V protein interacted with Bad, an apoptotic promoting protein, and this interaction inhibited the binding of Bad to Bcl-X L . V protein also bound to 14-3-3ε, which was essential for inhibition of 14-3-3ε cleavage. Our data collectively suggest that hPIV-2 V protein has two means of preventing mitochondrial apoptosis pathway: the inhibition of Bad-Bcl-X L interaction and the suppression of 14-3-3ε cleavage. Background: Women are underrepresented in orthopaedic surgery, especially in Japan. Authorship is associated with representation and career advancement, but the academic representation of women in Japanese orthopaedic surgery has not been elucidated. This study aimed to elucidate the proportion of female first authorship and its associating factors, as well as trends in the Journal of Orthopaedic Science (JOS), the official journal of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association., Methods: The study reviewed original articles published in JOS from 2002 to 2021 using data from PubMed on March 16, 2022. The gender of the first and last authors was determined using genderize. io, an online gender detection tool and manual search. The study used multivariable logistic regression to identify the factors associated with female first authorship and visualized the trend of predicted probability using restricted cubic spline curve., Results: Among 2272 original articles, 148 (6.5%) and 79 (3.5%) had female first and last authors, respectively. Compared with 2002-2006, female first authorship significantly increased in 2012-2016 (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 2.04; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.09-4.05; p = 0.03) and 2017-2021 (aOR, 2.72; 95% CI, 1.46-5.276; p = 0.002). Affiliation with an institution in Japan (aOR, 0.51; 95% CI, 0.35-0.74; p < 0.001) and affiliation in orthopaedics (aOR, 0.16; 95% CI, 0.11-0.23; p < 0.001) were negatively associated with female first authorship. Around 2020, the trend showed a gradual then rapid increase in women with non-orthopaedic affiliations. Only a very small increase was observed in women with an orthopaedic affiliation., Conclusions: Female first authorship in JOS has been increasing. However, the proportion of female authors remains low. Authors outside of Japan and not affiliated with orthopaedics largely affect female authorship statistics.
