Land sharing conservation strategies might not work if wildlife is exposed to plant protection products. Plant protection products are used to protect crops against harmful organisms yet they can also have unwanted side effects on non-target organisms. Amphibians are one group of non-target organisms for which there is evidence that plant protection products can have negative effects on individuals and populations. Despite much research on amphibian ecotoxicology, not much is known about the exposure of amphibians to plant protection products in agricultural landscapes. Here, we study habitat use and movement behaviour of an endangered amphibian, the Natterjack toad Epidalea calamita, in two study areas in Switzerland. We placed arrays of artificial cover boards in agricultural fields and adjacent non-agricultural habitats and used a photographic mark-recapture approach to track individual toads, both adults and juveniles, during and after the reproductive season in the terrestrial habitat. We used multistate and spatial mark-recapture models to analyse the data. Toads used the agricultural fields during spring and summer and set up their home ranges within the fields but there was a great turnover of individuals. Toad densities were higher in agricultural fields than other habitat types, including a nature reserve suitable for the species. Toads preferred open soils and avoided grassy meadows typical of agricultural set-asides, suggesting that the conservation of the species in agricultural landscapes requires new types of biodiversity promotion areas. The results of the study show that toads use agricultural fields during most of the growing season and are thus likely to be exposed to plant protection products.

The success of ponds constructed to restore ecological infrastructure for pond‐breeding amphibians and benefit aquatic biodiversity depends on where and how they are built. We studied effects of pond and landscape characteristics, including connectivity, on metapopulation dynamics of 12 amphibian species in Switzerland. To understand the determinants of long‐term occupancy (here summarized as incidence), environmental effects on both colonization and persistence should be considered. We fitted dynamic occupancy models to 20 years of monitoring data on a pond construction program to quantify effects of pond and landscape characteristics and different connectivity metrics on colonization and persistence probabilities in constructed ponds. Connectivity to existing populations explained dynamics better than structural connectivity metrics, and simple metrics (distance to the nearest neighbor population, population density) were useful surrogates for dispersal kernel‐weighted metrics commonly used in metapopulation theory. Population connectivity mediated the persistence of conservation target species in new ponds, suggesting source–sink dynamics in newly established populations. Population density captured this effect well and could be used by practitioners for site selection. Ponds created where there were 2–4 occupied ponds within a radius of ∼0.5 km had >3.5 times higher incidence of target species (median) than isolated ponds. Species had individual preferences regarding pond characteristics, but breeding sites with larger (≥100 m$^{2}$) total water surface area, that temporarily dried, and that were in surroundings with maximally 50% forest benefitted multiple target species. Pond diversity will foster amphibian diversity at the landscape scale.

Density dependent carry-over effects from one life history stage to another can affect the dynamics of populations. Here we study such carry-over effects from the tadpole to the postmetamorphic juvenile stage in an endangered amphibian, the natterjack toad (Epidalea calamita). We raised tadpoles in outdoor aquatic mesocosms at four densities and assessed juvenile performance after metamorphosis in terrestrial mesocosms. High larval density reduced mass at metamorphosis by 50 % and doubled the length of the larval period. Survival was reduced at the high densities. Larger metamorphs had higher survival in terrestrial mesocosms and remained larger than cohort members at the end of the 30-day experiment. Because juvenile survival drives amphibian population dynamics, density-dependent carry-over effects to the juvenile stage are likely to affect population viability. Reliable assessments of population status and trends underpin conservation management efforts but are complicated by the fact that imperfect detection is ubiquitous in monitoring data. We explore the most commonly considered variables believed to influence detection probabilities, quantifying how they influence detectability and assessing how occupancy rates are impacted when a variable is ignored. To do so, we used data from two multi-species amphibian monitoring programmes, collected by volunteers and professional surveyors. Our results suggest that although detection rates varied substantially in relation to commonly considered factors such as seasonal and annual effects, ignoring these factors in the analysis of monitoring data had negligible effect on estimated occupancy rates. Variation among surveyors in detection probabilities turned out to be most important. It was high and failing to account for it led to occupancy being underestimated. Importantly, we identified that heterogeneity among observers was as high for professional surveyors as for volunteers, highlighting that this issue is not restricted to citizen-science monitoring. Occupancy modelling has greatly improved the reliability of inference from species monitoring data, yet capturing the relevant sources of variation remains a challenge. Our results highlight that variation among surveyors is a key source of heterogeneity, and that this issue is just as pertinent to data collected by experts as by volunteers. Detection heterogeneity should be accounted for when analysing monitoring data. Furthermore, efforts to increase training of field crews and collecting data to quantify differences between observer abilities are important to avoid biased inference resulting from unmodelled observer differences.

Strong phenological shifts in response to changes in climatic conditions have been reported for many species, including amphibians, which are expected to breed earlier. Phenological shifts in breeding are observed in a wide number of amphibian populations, but less is known about populations living at high elevations, which are predicted to be more sensitive to climate change than lowland populations. The goal of this study is to assess the main factors determining the timing of breeding in an alpine population of the common toad (Bufo bufo) and to describe the observed shifts in its breeding phenology. We modelled the effect of environmental variables on the start and peak dates of the breeding season using 39 years of individual-based data. In addition, we investigated the effect of the lunar cycle, as well as the individual variation in breeding phenology. Finally, to assess the individual heterogeneity in the timing of breeding, we calculated the repeatability of the timing of arrival at the breeding site. Breeding advanced to earlier dates in the first years of the study but the trend continued only until the mid 1990s, and stabilised afterwards. Overall, toads are now breeding on average around 30 days earlier than at the start of the study period. High temperatures and low snow cover in winter and spring, as well as reduced spring precipitation were all associated with earlier breeding. Additionally, we found evidence of males arriving on average before females at the breeding site but no clear and strong effect of the lunar cycle. We only found weak evidence of among-individual variation in shifts in the breeding phenology, as well as a low repeatability of arrival timing. Our findings show that the observed changes in breeding phenology are strongly associated with the environmental conditions.
