5. Concave/convex switchable lens using active phase-change material Ge3Sb2Te6

Abstract

Normally, the focal length of a conventional lens is fixed. Scientists have made much effort in modulating it into bifocal, which is very important for virtual reality (VR) and argument reality (AR) 3D display. It is even much more difficult for a lens to realize both convex and concave functions with one geometric structure, that is, a concave/convex switchable lens, which can tune 3D real-images and virtual-images in AR and VR, corresponding to long depth of view in 3D display. Based on the tunable refractive indexes of phase-change materials, here we propose a series of concave/convex switchable lenses. When the phase-change material is in different states, one switchable lens is able to perform a negative or positive focal length, or perform negative and positive focal lengths simultaneously. The lenses can be either cylindrical, spherical or other types. For the superior characteristics, these switchable lenses can be employed in various optical fields.

Abstract

Polyradical cages are of great interest because they show very fascinating physical and chemical properties, but many challenges remain, especially for their synthesis and characterization. Herein, we present the synthesis of a polyradical cation cage 14⋅+ through post‐synthetic oxidation of a redox‐active phenothiazine‐based Pd2L4‐type coordination cage 1. It′s worth noting that 1 exhibits excellent reversible electrochemical and chemical redox activity due to the introduction of a bulky 3,5‐di‐tert‐butyl‐4‐methoxyphenyl substituent. The generation of 14⋅+ through reversible electrochemical oxidation is investigated by in situ UV/Vis‐NIR and EPR spectroelectrochemistry. Meanwhile, chemical oxidation of 1 can also produce 14⋅+ which can be reversibly reduced back to the original cage 1, and the process is monitored by EPR and NMR spectroscopies. Eventually, we succeed in the isolation and single crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis of 14⋅+, whose electronic structure and conformation are distinct to original 1. The magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate the predominantly antiferromagnetic interactions between the four phenothiazine radical cations in 14⋅+. We believe that our study including the facile synthesis methodology and in situ spectroelectrochemistry will shed some light on the synthesis and characterization of novel polyradical systems, opening more perspectives for developing functional supramolecular cages. Abstract

Comprehensive Summary: Since 1986, the donor‐acceptor (D:A) heterojunction has been regarded a necessity for high‐efficiency organic photovoltaics (OPVs), due to its unique advantage in compensating the intrinsic limitations of organic semiconductors, such as high exciton binding energy and poor ambipolar charge mobility. While this adversely causes tremendous non‐radiative charge recombination and instability issues, which currently become the most critical limits for commercialization of OPVs. Here, we present a concept‐to‐proof study on the potential of D:A heterojunction free OPV by taking advantage of recent progress of non‐fullerene acceptors. First, we demonstrate that the "free carriers" can be spontaneously generated upon illumination in an NFA, i.e., the 6TIC‐4F single layer. Second, the 6TIC‐4F layer also exhibits good ambipolar charge transporting property. These exceptional characteristics distinguish it from the traditional organic semiconductors, and relieve it from the reliance of D:A heterojunction to independently work as active layer. As a result, the subsequent OPV by simply sandwiching the 6TIC‐4F layer between the cathode and anode yields a considerably high power conversion efficiency ~1%. Moreover, we find the D:A heterojunction free device exhibits two order of magnitude higher electroluminescence quantum efficiency and significantly reduced VOC loss by 0.16 eV compared to those of the D:A BHJ structure, validating its promise for higher efficiency in the future. Therefore, our work demonstrates the possibility of using D:A heterojunction‐free device structure for high performance, that can potentially become the next game changer of OPV. Abstract

The development of multimode photopatterning systems based on supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) is considerably attractive in supramolecular chemistry and materials science, because SCCs can serve as promising platforms for the incorporation of multiple functional building blocks. Herein, we report a light‐responsive liquid‐crystalline metallacycle that is constructed by coordination‐driven self‐assembly. By exploiting its fascinating liquid crystal features, bright emission properties, and facile photocyclization capability, a unique system with spatially‐controlled fluorescence‐resonance energy transfer (FRET) is built through the introduction of a photochromic spiropyran derivative, which led to the realization of the first example of a liquid‐crystalline metallacycle for orthogonal photopatterning in three‐modes, namely holography, fluorescence, and photochromism.
