All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) are a class of safer and higher-energy-density materials compared to conventional devices, from which solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) are their essential components. To date, investigations to search for high ion-conducting solid-state electrolytes have attracted broad concern. However, obtaining SSEs with high ionic conductivity is challenging due to the complex structural information and the less-explored structure-performance relationship. To provide a solution to these challenges, developing a database containing typical SSEs from available experimental reports would be a new avenue to understand the structure-performance relationships and find out new design guidelines for reasonable SSEs. Herein, a dynamic experimental database containing >600 materials was developed in a wide range of temperatures (132.40–1261.60 ​K), including mono- and divalent cations (e.g., Li+, Na+, K+, Ag+, Ca2+, Mg2+, and Zn2+) and various types of anions (e.g., halide, hydride, sulfide, and oxide). Data-mining was conducted to explore the relationships among different variates (e.g., transport ion, composition, activation energy, and conductivity). Overall, we expect that this database can provide essential guidelines for the design and development of high-performance SSEs in ASSB applications. This database is dynamically updated, which can be accessed via our open-source online system.

Abstract Solid‐state methods for cooling and heating promise a sustainable alternative to current compression cycles of greenhouse gases and inefficient fuel‐burning heaters. Barocaloric effects (BCE) driven by hydrostatic pressure (p) are especially encouraging in terms of large adiabatic temperature changes (|ΔT| ≈ 10 K) and isothermal entropy changes (|ΔS| ≈ 100 J K−1 kg−1). However, BCE typically require large pressure shifts due to irreversibility issues, and sizeable |ΔT| and |ΔS| seldom are realized in a same material. Here, the existence of colossal and reversible BCE in LiCB11H12 is demonstrated near its order‐disorder phase transition at ≈380 K. Specifically, for Δp ≈ 0.23 (0.10) GPa, |ΔSrev| = 280 (200) J K−1 kg−1 and |ΔTrev| = 32 (10) K are measured, which individually rival with state‐of‐the‐art BCE figures. Furthermore, pressure shifts of the order of 0.1 GPa yield huge reversible barocaloric strengths of ≈2 J K−1 kg−1 MPa−1. Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to quantify the role of lattice vibrations, molecular reorientations, and ion diffusion on the disclosed BCE. Interestingly, lattice vibrations are found to contribute the most to |ΔS| while the diffusion of lithium ions, despite adding up only slightly to the entropy change, is crucial in enabling the molecular order–disorder phase transition.

Abstract As potential alternatives to Li‐ion batteries, rechargeable Ca metal batteries offer advantageous features such as high energy density, cost‐effectiveness, and natural elemental abundance. However, challenges, such as Ca metal passivation by electrolytes and a lack of cathode materials with efficient Ca2+ storage capabilities, impede the development of practical Ca metal batteries. To overcome these limitations, the applicability of a CuS cathode in Ca metal batteries and its electrochemical properties are verified herein. Ex situ spectroscopy and electron microscopy results show that a CuS cathode comprising nanoparticles that are well dispersed in a high‐surface‐area carbon matrix can serve as an effective cathode for Ca2+ storage via the conversion reaction. This optimally functioning cathode is coupled with a tailored, weakly coordinating monocarborane‐anion electrolyte, namely, Ca(CB11H12)2 in 1,2‐dimethoxyethane/tetrahydrofuran, which enables reversible Ca plating/stripping at room temperature. The combination affords a Ca metal battery with a long cycle life of over 500 cycles and capacity retention of 92% based on the capacity of the 10th cycle. This study confirms the feasibility of the long‐term operation of Ca metal anodes and can expedite the development of Ca metal batteries.

Abstract The use of hydrogen in iron and steel has the potential to improve mechanical properties via altering the phase stability and dislocation behavior. When hydrogen is introduced under several gigapascals, a stoichiometric composition of hydrogen can be introduced for steel compositions. In this study, a face-centered cubic (fcc) stainless steel was hydrogenated under several gigapascals. When the steel was not hydrogenated, the microstructure after depressurization was an fcc with a hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure. In contrast, the hydrogenation treatment resulted in a fine lath body-centered cubic (bcc) structure arising from diffusionless transformation. In particular, the bcc phase formed through the following transformation sequence: fcc → hcp → dhcp (double hexagonal close-packed phase) → bcc. That is, the use of hydrogenation treatment realized fine microstructure evolution through a new type of diffusionless transformation sequence, which is expected to be used in future alloy design strategies for developing high-strength steels.

Summary: High ionic conductivity, suitable mechanical strength, and electrochemical stability are the main requirements for high-performance poly(ethylene oxide)-based electrolytes. However, the low ionic conductivity owing to the crystallinity of the ethylene oxide chain that limits the discharge rate and low-temperature performance has restricted the development and commercialization of these electrolytes. Lithium electrolytes that combine high ionic conductivity with a high lithium transference number are rare and are essential for high-power batteries. Here, we report hexagonal arranged porous scaffolds for holding prototype polyethylene glycol-based composite electrolytes containing solvate ionic liquid. The appealing electrochemical and thermal properties indicate their potential as electrolytes for safer rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. The porous scaffolds in the composite electrolytes ensure better electrochemical performance towing to their shortened pores (sizes of 3-14 μm), interconnected pathways, and improved lithium mobility. We demonstrate that both molecular design and porous microstructures are essential for improving performance in polymer electrolytes.

Abstract Traditional refrigeration technologies based on compression cycles of greenhouse gases pose serious threats to the environment and cannot be downscaled to electronic device dimensions. Solid-state cooling exploits the thermal response of caloric materials to changes in the applied external fields (i.e., magnetic, electric and/or mechanical stress) and represents a promising alternative to current refrigeration methods. However, most of the caloric materials known to date present relatively small adiabatic temperature changes ( $$|\Delta T| \sim 1$$ | Δ T | ∼ 1 to 10 K) and/or limiting irreversibility issues resulting from significant phase-transition hysteresis. Here, we predict by using molecular dynamics simulations the existence of colossal barocaloric effects induced by pressure (isothermal entropy changes of $$|\Delta S| \sim 100$$ | Δ S | ∼ 100 J K $$^{-1}$$ - 1 kg $$^{-1}$$ - 1 ) in the energy material Li $$_{2}$$ 2 B $$_{12}$$ 12 H $$_{12}$$ 12 . Specifically, we estimate $$|\Delta S| = 367$$ | Δ S | = 367 J K $$^{-1}$$ - 1 kg $$^{-1}$$ - 1 and $$|\Delta T| = 43$$ | Δ T | = 43 K for a small pressure shift of P = 0.1 GPa at $$T = 480$$ T = 480 K. The disclosed colossal barocaloric effects are originated by a fairly reversible order–disorder phase transformation involving coexistence of Li $$^{+}$$ + diffusion and (BH) $$_{12}^{-2}$$ 12 - 2 reorientational motion at high temperatures.

Abstract High-energy-density and low-cost calcium (Ca) batteries have been proposed as ‘beyond-Li-ion’ electrochemical energy storage devices. However, they have seen limited progress due to challenges associated with developing electrolytes showing reductive/oxidative stabilities and high ionic conductivities. This paper describes a calcium monocarborane cluster salt in a mixed solvent as a Ca-battery electrolyte with high anodic stability (up to 4 V vs. Ca2+/Ca), high ionic conductivity (4 mS cm−1), and high Coulombic efficiency for Ca plating/stripping at room temperature. The developed electrolyte is a promising candidate for use in room-temperature rechargeable Ca batteries.

Fossil fuels and materials on Earth are a finite resource and the disposal of waste into the air, on land, and into water has an impact on our environment on a global level. Using Switzerland as an example, the energy demand and the technical challenges, and the economic feasibility of a transition to an energy economy based entirely on renewable energy were analyzed. Three approaches for the complete substitution of fossil fuels with renewable energy from photovoltaics called energy systems (ES) were considered, i.e., a purely electric system with battery storage (ELC), hydrogen (HYS), and synthetic hydrocarbons (HCR). ELC is the most energy efficient solution; however, it requires seasonal electricity storage to meet year-round energy needs. Meeting this need through batteries has a significant capital cost and is not feasible at current rates of battery production, and expanding pumped hydropower to the extent necessary will have a big impact on the environment. The HYS allows underground hydrogen storage to balance seasonal demand, but requires building of a hydrogen infrastructure and applications working with hydrogen. Finally, the HCR requires the largest photovoltaic (PV) field, but the infrastructure and the applications already exist. The model for Switzerland can be applied to other countries, adapting the solar irradiation, the energy demand and the storage options.

Hydrogen can be stored in the interstitial sites of the lattices of intermetallic compounds. To date, intermetallic compound LaNi5 or related LaNi5-based alloys are known to be practical hydrogen storage materials owing to their higher volumetric hydrogen densities, making them a compact hydrogen storage method and allowing stable reversible hydrogen absorption and desorption reactions to take place at room temperature below 1.0 MPa. By contrast, gravimetric hydrogen density is required for key improvements (e.g., gravimetric hydrogen density of LaNi5: 1.38 mass%). Although hydrogen storage materials have typically been evaluated for their hydrogen storage properties below 10 MPa, reactions between hydrogen and materials can be facilitated above 1 GPa because the chemical potential of hydrogen dramatically increases at a higher pressure. This indicates that high-pressure experiments above 1 GPa could clarify the latent hydrogen absorption reactions below 10 MPa and potentially explore new hydride phases. In this study, we investigated the hydrogen absorption reaction of LaNi5 above 1 GPa at room temperature to understand their potential hydrogen storage capacities. The high-pressure experiments on LaNi5 with and without an internal hydrogen source (BH3NH3) were performed using a multi-anvil-type high-pressure apparatus, and the reactions were observed using in situ synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction with an energy dispersive method. The results showed that 2.07 mass% hydrogen was absorbed by LaNi5 at 6 GPa. Considering the unit cell volume expansion, the estimated hydrogen storage capacity could be 1.5 times higher than that obtained from hydrogen absorption reaction below 1.0 MPa at 303 K. Thus, 33% of the available interstitial sites in LaNi5 remained unoccupied by hydrogen atoms under conventional conditions. Although the hydrogen-absorbed LaNi5Hx (x < 9) was maintained below 573 K at 10 GPa, LaNi5Hx began decomposing into NiH, and the formation of a new phase was observed at 873 K and 10 GPa. The new phase was indexed to a hexagonal or trigonal unit cell with a ≈ 4.44 Å and c ≈ 8.44 Å. Further, the newly-formed phase was speculated to be a new hydride phase because the Bragg peak positions and unit cell parameters were inconsistent with those reported for the La-Ni intermetallic compounds and La-Ni hydride phases.

Among the various functionalities of hydrides, their use in hydrogen storage has been the most intensively studied because hydrides can store hydrogen compactly and safely. Thus, hydrides are key materials for the hydrogen economy. Here, the hydrogen storage material Al3FeH3.9 has been synthesized from cost-effective earth-abundant metals, Fe and Al. Hydrides consisting of Al and transition metals with low hydrogen affinities are rare because such alloys are unstable. However, it is expected that appropriate mixing of the chemical states of hydrogen atoms would allow synthesis of Al-Fe hydrides. The experimentally determined crystal structure of Al3FeD3.9 suggests realization of the mixing of the chemical state of hydrogen. Al3FeH3.9 is more thermodynamically stable than AlH3, and it is likely that the mixing of the chemical state of hydrogen atoms is the source of increased stability. The results of this study confirm that by controlling the chemical states of hydrogen, it is possible to tune the thermodynamic stability of hydrides and thus realize novel functional hydrides.

Phase transformation in hydrogenated iron during depressurization from several gigapascals was investigated through in-situ synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction and post-mortem electron backscatter diffraction measurements. The hydrogenated iron under 8.6 GPa at 293 K showed a double hexagonal close-packed (dhcp) structure, and it gradually transformed into a body-centered cubic (bcc) structure with decreasing pressure. The final crystal structure consisted entirely of a bcc phase. The structural change from dhcp to bcc structure was diffusionless-type phase transformation. The bcc phase showed lath morphology and could grow during aging under a constant pressure of 1.9 GPa, which indicated that it was bainitic-type transformation that required hydrogen diffusion or desorption.

Quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) and neutron powder diffraction of the complex transition metal hydrides Li_{5}MoH_{11} and Li_{6}NbH_{11} were measured in a temperature range of 10–300 K to study their structures and dynamics, especially the dynamics of the hydrogen atoms. These hydrides contain unusual ninefold H-coordinated complex ions (MoH_{9}^{3−} or NbH_{9}^{4−}) and hydride ions (H^{−}). A QENS signal appeared >150 K due to the relaxation of H atoms. The intermediate scattering functions derived from the QENS spectra are well fitted by a stretched exponential function called the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts functions with a small stretching exponent β ≈ 0.3–0.4, suggesting a wide relaxation time distribution. The Q dependence of the elastic incoherent structure factor is reproduced by the rotational diffusion of MH_{9} (M=Mo or Nb) anions. The results are well supported by a van Hove analysis for the motion of H atoms obtained using first-principles molecular dynamics calculations. We conclude that the wide relaxation time distribution of the MH_{9} rotation is due to the positional disorder of the surrounding Li ions and a unique rotation with MH_{9} anion deformation (pseudorotation).

All-solid-state batteries could deliver high energy densities without using organic liquid electrolytes. Here the authors report a complex hydride Li-ion conductor 0.7Li(CB9H10)–0.3Li(CB11H12) that exhibits impressive ionic conductivity and other electrochemical characteristics in an all-solid-state cell.

REMgNi4-based alloys, RE(2−x)MgxNi4 (RE: rare-earth metals; 0 < x < 2), with a AuBe5-type crystal structure, exhibit reversible hydrogen absorption and desorption reactions, which are known as hydrogen storage properties. These reactions involve formation of three hydride phases. The hydride formation pressures and hydrogen storage capacities are related to the radii of the RE(2−x)MgxNi4, which in turn are dependent on the radii and compositional ratios of the RE and Mg atoms. The crystal structures formed during hydrogen absorption reactions are the key to understanding the hydrogen storage properties of RE(2−x)MgxNi4. Therefore, in this review, we provide an overview of the crystal structures in the hydrogen absorption reactions focusing on RE(2−x)MgxNi4.

The hydrogen desorption and absorption reactions of the complex metal hydride NaAlH4 are disproportionation processes, and the kinetics can be improved by adding a few mol% of Ti compounds, although the catalytic mechanism, including the location and state of Ti, remains unknown. In this study, we aimed to reveal the generating mechanism of catalytic Al–Ti alloy in NaAlH4 with TiCl3 using quantum multiprobe techniques such as neutron diffraction (ND), synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), anomalous X-ray scattering (AXS), and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS). Rietveld refinements of the ND and XRD, profiles before the first desorption of NaAlD(H)4–0.02TiCl3 showed that Al in NaAlD(H)4 was partially substituted by Ti. On the other hand, Ti was not present in NaAlH4, and Al–Ti nanoparticles were detected in the XRD profile after the first re-absorption. This was consistent with the AXS and XAFS results. It is suggested that the substitution promotes the formation of a highly dispersed nanosized Al–Ti alloy during the first desorption process and that the effectiveness of TiCl3 as an additive can be attributed to the dispersion of Ti.

High-pressure hydrogenation behaviors of pure metals have not been investigated extensively, although intense research of hydrogenation reactions under high pressure has been conducted to find novel functional hydrides. The former provides us with valuable information for the high-pressure synthesis of novel functional hydrides. A pressure–temperature phase diagram of the Ta–H system has been determined using the in situ synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction technique below 9 GPa and 600 °C in this study. At room temperature, the phase boundary obtained between distorted bcc TaH~1 and hcp TaH~2 was consistent with the previously reported transition pressure. The experimentally obtained Clapeyron slope can be explained via the entropy change caused by hydrogen evolution from TaH~2.

We report the stabilization of the high-temperature (high-T) phase of lithium carba-closo-decaborate, Li(CB9H10), via the formation of solid solutions in a Li(CB9H10)-Li2(B12H12) quasi-binary system. Li(CB9H10)-based solid solutions in which [CB9H10]− is replaced by [B12H12]2− were obtained at compositions with low x values in the (1−x)Li(CB9H10)−xLi2(B12H12) system. An increase in the extent of [B12H12]2− substitution promoted stabilization of the high-T phase of Li(CB9H10), resulting in an increase in the lithium-ion conductivity. Superionic conductivities of over 10−3 S cm−1 were achieved for the compounds with 0.2 ≤ x ≤ 0.4. In addition, a comparison of the Li(CB9H10)−Li2(B12H12) system and the Li(CB9H10)−Li(CB11H12) system suggests that the valence of the complex anions plays an important role in the ionic conduction. In battery tests, an all-solid-state Li–TiS2 cell employing 0.6Li(CB9H10)−0.4Li2(B12H12) (x = 0.4) as a solid electrolyte presented reversible battery reactions during repeated discharge–charge cycles. The current study offers an insight into strategies to develop complex hydride solid electrolytes.

Complex hydrides have collected recent attention as a new class of solid electrolytes with potential applications in all-solid-state batteries. To improve ionic conduction in the complex hydrides, multi-cation crystal structure can be attractive. It will allow tuning the cation dynamics via structure modification depending on types and number of additional cations. However, multi-cation crystal structure struggles with the inter-cation scattering among different cations. To address this issue, understanding the conduction mechanisms in the multi-cationic crystals is indispensable. Here, we study cationic conduction in a double-cation (Li and Na) complex hydride Li3Na(NH2)4, which is formed by replacing Li (with Na) from specific lattice site of LiNH2 without altering the crystal symmetry. The nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements found that Li3Na(NH2)4 is a Li-ion conductor with negligibly small Na-ion conduction. This finding is critically important to elucidate Li-ion conduction mechanism in Li3Na(NH2)4. Enhanced Li-ion conduction in Li3Na(NH2)4 is achieved by (a) suppressing diffusion of Na cation trapped at the strategically located 2c lattice sites under deep potential well; and (b) by increasing the Li defect concentration influenced by the larger volume of the Li metastable sites due to Na substitution into LiNH2. Our study will provide the design principle for multi-cation complex hydrides, and accelerate development of superior solid electrolytes for all-solid-state batteries.

We investigate the electron transport properties and structures of β-NbHx(010) epitaxial thin films on Al2O3(001) substrates with a variety of hydrogen contents. NbHx epitaxial thin films with x ≥ 0.77 exhibit a hysteresis loop in their resistance near room temperature. Notably, this hysteresis loop appears above the β–λ phase transition temperature. Detailed analysis of the temperature dependence of these structures suggests that the short-range ordering of hydrogen rearrangement in the λ-phase remains locally above the transition temperature, inducing the hysteresis in the resistance.

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the charge transport properties of TiH_{x}(x=1.6–2.0) epitaxial thin films. We found that the Hall coefficient of TiH_{x} strongly depends on hydrogen content and unit-cell volume: Nearly stoichiometric TiH_{x}(x≈2.0) films with large unit-cell volumes showed positive Hall coefficients at 4 K, whereas TiH_{x} samples with x

We report the fabrication of atomically abrupt interfaces of titanium dihydride (δ-TiH2) films and α-Al2O3(001) substrates. With the assistance from reactive hydrogen in plasma, single-phase δ-TiH2 epitaxial thin films were grown on α-Al2O3(001) substrates using the reactive magnetron sputtering technique. Scanning transmission electron microscopy measurements revealed an atomically abrupt interface at the δ-TiH2(111) film and Al2O3(001) substrate. These results indicate that the reactive magnetron sputtering has great potential to deposit various epitaxial thin films of hydrides restricted by the hydrogenation limit. The fabrication of high-quality hydride epitaxial thin films with atomically controlled interfaces paves the way for future hydride electronics.

The dehydriding process and hydrogen–deuterium exchange (H–D exchange) of xLiBH4 + (1 − x)Mg2FeD6 (x = 0.25, 0.75) composites has been studied in detail. For the composition with x = 0.25, only one overlapping mass peak of all hydrogen and deuterium related species was observed in mass spectrometry. This implied the simultaneous dehydriding of LiBH4 and Mg2FeD6, despite an almost 190 °C difference in the dehydriding temperatures of the respective discrete complex hydrides. In situ infrared spectroscopy measurements indicated that H–D exchange between [BH4]− and [FeD6]4− had occurred during ball-milling and was promoted upon heating. The extent of H–D exchange was estimated from the areas of the relevant mass signals: immediately prior to the dehydriding, more than two H atoms in [BH4]− was replaced by D atoms. For x = 0.75, H–D exchange also occurred and about one to two H atoms in [BH4]− was replaced by D atoms immediately before the dehydriding. In contrast to the situation for x = 0.25, firstly LiBH4 and Mg2FeD6 dehydrided simultaneously with a special molar ratio = 1:1 at x = 0.75, and then the remaining LiBH4 reacted with the Mg and Fe derived from the dehydriding of Mg2FeD6.

We report on the epitaxial thin film growth of an air-sensitive hydride, lithium hydride (LiH), using pulsed laser deposition (PLD). We first synthesized a dense LiH target, which is key for PLD growth of high-quality hydride films. Then, we obtained epitaxial thin films of [100]-oriented LiH on a MgO(100) substrate at 250 °C under a hydrogen pressure of 1.3 × 10−2 Pa. Atomic force microscopy revealed that the film demonstrates a Stranski-Krastanov growth mode and that the film with a thickness of ∼10 nm has a good surface flatness, with root-mean-square roughness RRMS of ∼0.4 nm.

Aluminium-based complex hydrides (alanates) composed of metal cation(s) and complex anion(s), [AlH4]− or [AlH6]3− with covalent Al–H bonds, have attracted tremendous attention as hydrogen storage materials since the discovery of the reversible hydrogen desorption and absorption reactions on Ti-enhanced NaAlH4. In cases wherein alkaline-earth metals (M) are used as a metal cation, MAlH5 with corner-sharing AlH6 octahedron chains are known to form. The crystal structure of SrAlH5 has remained unsolved although two different results have been theoretically and experimentally proposed. Focusing on the corner-sharing AlH6 octahedron chains as a unique feature of the alkaline-earth metal, we here report the crystal structure of SrAlD5 investigated by synchrotron radiation powder X-ray and neutron diffraction. SrAlD5 was elucidated to adopt an orthorhombic unit cell with a = 4.6226(10) Å, b = 12.6213(30) Å and c = 5.0321(10) Å in the space group Pbcm (No. 57) and Z = 4. The Al–D distances (1.77–1.81 Å) in the corner-sharing AlD6 octahedra matched with those in the isolated [AlD6]3− although the D–Al–D angles in the penta-alanates are significantly more distorted than the isolated [AlD6]3−.

In previous studies, complex hydrides LiBH4 and Mg2FeH6 have been reported to undergo simultaneous dehydrogenation when ball-milled as composite materials (1 − x)LiBH4 + xMg2FeH6. The simultaneous hydrogen release led to a decrease of the dehydrogenation temperature by as much as 150 K when compared to that of LiBH4. It also led to the modified dehydrogenation properties of Mg2FeH6. The simultaneous dehydrogenation behavior between stoichiometric ratios of LiBH4 and Mg2FeH6 is not yet understood. Therefore, in the present work, we used the molar ratio x = 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75, and studied the isothermal dehydrogenation processes via pressure–composition–isothermal (PCT) measurements. The results indicated that the same stoichiometric reaction occurred in all of these composite materials, and x = 0.5 was the molar ratio between LiBH4 and Mg2FeH6 in the reaction. Due to the optimal composition ratio, the composite material exhibited enhanced rehydrogenation and reversibility properties: the temperature and pressure of 673 K and 20 MPa of H2, respectively, for the full rehydrogenation of x = 0.5 composite, were much lower than those required for the partial rehydrogenation of LiBH4. Moreover, the x = 0.5 composite could be reversibly hydrogenated for more than four cycles without degradation of its H2 capacity.

Li4FeH6, which has the highest gravimetric hydrogen density of iron-containing complex hydrides reported so far, is synthesized by hydrogenation of a powder mixture of iron and LiH above 6.1 GPa at 900 °C. In situ synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction measurements reveal that while kinetics require high temperature and thus high pressure for the synthesis, Li4FeH6 is expected to be thermodynamically stable slightly below room temperature at ambient pressure; further synthetic studies to suppress the kinetic effects may enable us to synthesize Li4FeH6 at moderate pressures. Li4FeH6 can be recovered at ambient conditions where Li4FeH6 is metastable.
