Abstract: Speckle patterns manifesting from the interaction of coherent X-rays with matter offer a glimpse into the dynamics of nanoscale domains that underpin many emergent phenomena in quantum materials. While the dynamics of the average structure can be followed with time-resolved X-ray diffraction, the ultrafast evolution of local structures in nonequilibrium conditions have thus far eluded detection due to experimental limitations, such as insufficient X-ray coherent flux. Here we demonstrate a nonequilibrium speckle visibility experiment using a split-and-delay setup at an X-ray free-electron laser. Photoinduced electronic domain fluctuations of the magnetic model material Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$ reveal changes of the trimeron network configuration due to charge dynamics that exhibit liquid-like fluctuations, analogous to a supercooled liquid phase. This suggests that ultrafast dynamics of electronic heterogeneities under optical stimuli are fundamentally different from thermally-driven ones.

Abstract: A novel method to reconstruct the energy of hadronic showers in the CMS High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) is presented. The HGCAL is a sampling calorimeter with very fine transverse and longitudinal granularity. The active media are silicon sensors and scintillator tiles readout by SiPMs and the absorbers are a combination of lead and Cu/CuW in the electromagnetic section, and steel in the hadronic section. The shower reconstruction method is based on graph neural networks and it makes use of a dynamic reduction network architecture. It is shown that the algorithm is able to capture and mitigate the main effects that normally hinder the reconstruction of hadronic showers using classical reconstruction methods, by compensating for fluctuations in the multiplicity, energy, and spatial distributions of the shower's constituents. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using test beam data collected in 2018 prototype of the CMS HGCAL accompanied by a section of the CALICE AHCAL prototype. 3. Global-in-time energy stability: a powerful analysis tool for the gradient flow problem without maximum principle or Lipschitz assumption

Abstract: Before proving (unconditional) energy stability for gradient flows, most existing studies either require a strong Lipschitz condition regarding the non-linearity or certain $L^{\infty}$ bounds on the numerical solutions (the maximum principle). However, proving energy stability without such premises is a very challenging task. In this paper, we aim to develop a novel analytical tool, namely global-in-time energy stability, to demonstrate energy dissipation without assuming any strong Lipschitz condition or $L^{\infty}$ boundedness. The fourth-order-in-space Swift-Hohenberg equation is used to elucidate the theoretical results in detail. We also propose a temporal second-order accurate scheme for efficiently solving such a strongly stiff equation. Furthermore, we present the corresponding optimal $L^2$ error estimate and provide several numerical simulations to demonstrate the dynamics.

4. The Effect of Quantization in Federated Learning: A R\'enyi Differential Privacy Perspective

Abstract: Federated Learning (FL) is an emerging paradigm that holds great promise for privacy-preserving machine learning using distributed data. To enhance privacy, FL can be combined with Differential Privacy (DP), which involves adding Gaussian noise to the model weights. However, FL faces a significant challenge in terms of large communication overhead when transmitting these model weights. To address this issue, quantization is commonly employed. Nevertheless, the presence of quantized Gaussian noise introduces complexities in understanding privacy protection. This research paper investigates the impact of quantization on privacy in FL systems. We examine the privacy guarantees of quantized Gaussian mechanisms using R\'enyi Differential Privacy (RDP). By deriving the privacy budget of quantized Gaussian mechanisms, we demonstrate that lower quantization bit levels provide improved privacy protection. To validate our theoretical findings, we employ Membership Inference Attacks (MIA), which gauge the accuracy of privacy leakage. The numerical results align with our theoretical analysis, confirming that quantization can indeed enhance privacy protection. Abstract: A central paradigm of non-equilibrium physics concerns the dynamics of heterogeneity and disorder, impacting processes ranging from the behavior of glasses to the emergent functionality of active matter. Understanding these complex mesoscopic systems requires probing the microscopic trajectories associated with irreversible processes, the role of fluctuations and entropy growth, and the timescales on which non-equilibrium responses are ultimately maintained. Approaches that illuminate these processes in model systems may enable a more general understanding of other heterogeneous non-equilibrium phenomena, and potentially define ultimate speed and energy cost limits for information processing technologies. Here, we apply ultrafast single shot x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy to resolve the non-equilibrium, heterogeneous, and irreversible mesoscale dynamics during a light-induced phase transition. This approach defines a new way of capturing the nucleation of the induced phase, the formation of transient mesoscale defects at the boundaries of the nuclei, and the eventual annihilation of these defects, even in systems with complex polarization topologies. A non-equilibrium response spanning >10 orders of magnitude in timescales is observed, with multistep behavior similar to the plateaus observed in supercooled liquids and glasses. We show how the observed time-dependent long-time correlations can be understood in terms of the stochastic dynamics of domain walls, encoded in effective waiting-time distributions with power-law tails. This work defines new possibilities for probing the non-equilibrium and correlated dynamics of disordered and heterogeneous media.

6. Tintinnid community structure in the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean during the spring inter‑monsoon period

Abstract: Tintinnid community structure was investigated by plankton net (20 µm) sampling in the water column (0-200 m) at 33 stations during the spring inter-monsoon (10 March to 9 April 2012) in the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean. A total of 126 species belonging to 32 genera were recorded. Tintinnid abundance and biomass in the range of 193-2983 ind. m-3 and 0.99-14.75 µg C m-3 were positively related to integrated chlorophyll a (chl a) concentration. Taxonomic and morphological diversity were not significantly related to integrated chl a concentration and size diversity, estimated by size-fractionated chl a concentration in the water column of 0-200 m, but were negatively correlated to the depth of the deep chlorophyll maximum. Species abundance distributions at most stations (31 of 33) and in the 3 zonesóthe northern zone of the equator, the southern zone of the equator (SEQ) and the equator (EQ)ófollowed a typical lognormal distribution. The geometric distribution gave the best fit for the distribution of lorica oral diameter size-classes in the NEQ and SEQ. Our results suggest that the community structure of tintinnids is governed by the underlying water column environment rather than by the neutral theory of random colonization from a large species pool.

Given the known synergistic effects of hypertension and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) on cardiovascular risk, we aimed to explore the relationship between the WWI and CVD risk specifically within this high-risk cohort.Methods: A total of 2265 participants with hypertension and OSA were included in the study. Multivariate Cox regression analysis was used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for CVD events. The restricted cubic spline (RCS) was used to further evaluate the nonlinear dose-response relationship.Results: During a median follow-up period of 6.8 years, 324 participants experienced a CVD event. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that compared to the reference group, the HRs for the second, third, and fourth groups were 1.12 (95% CI, 0.79– 1.59), 1.35 (95% CI, 0.96– 1.89), and 1.58 (95% CI, 1.13– 2.22), respectively. Moreover, RCS analysis illustrated a clear J-shaped relationship between the WWI and CVD risk, particularly notable when WWI exceeded 11.5 cm/, signifying a significant increase in CVD risk.Conclusion: There was a J-shaped relationship between WWI and CVD in hypertensive patients with OSA, especially when the WWI was greater than 11.5 cm/, the risk of CVD was significantly increased.Keywords: hypertensive, obstructive sleep apnea, weight-adjusted-waist index, cardiovascular disease, visceral obesity

9. Client Selection for Federated Policy Optimization with Environment Heterogeneity

Abstract: The development of Policy Iteration (PI) has inspired many recent algorithms for Reinforcement Learning (RL), including several policy gradient methods that gained both theoretical soundness and empirical success on a variety of tasks. The theory of PI is rich in the context of centralized learning, but its study under the federated setting is still in the infant stage. This paper investigates the federated version of Approximate PI (API) and derives its error bound, taking into account the approximation error introduced by environment heterogeneity. We theoretically prove that a proper client selection scheme can reduce this error bound. Based on the theoretical result, we propose a client selection algorithm to alleviate the additional approximation error caused by environment heterogeneity. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other biased and unbiased client selection methods on the federated mountain car problem and the Mujoco Hopper problem by effectively selecting clients with a lower level of heterogeneity from the population distribution.

Notably, children exhibit distinct resistance mechanisms compared to adults, necessitating a differential approach to antibiotic selection. A thorough analysis of CRKP’s epidemiology and drug resistance mechanisms is essential for establishing a robust foundation for clinical anti-infection strategies and precise prevention and control measures.Methods: This study involved the collection of 31 non-repetitive strains from pediatric and adult patients at a tertiary hospital in China, spanning from July 2016 to July 2022, testing for resistance genes, antimicrobial susceptibility, and homology analysis.Results: Infants (0– 1 year) were the largest pediatric CRKP group, with 61.3% of cases. The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and pediatrics were the main departments affected. Adults with CRKP had a mean age of 67 years, with the highest prevalence in neurology and emergency ICU. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed that adult CRKP strains exhibited higher resistance to amikacin, ciprofloxacin, cotrimoxazole, and aztreonam compared to pediatric strains. Conversely, pediatric strains showed a higher rate of resistance to ceftazidime/avibactam. The predominant resistance genes identified were blaNDM-5 in children (58.1%) and blaKPC-2 in adults (87.1%), with over 93% of both groups testing positive for extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) genes. Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST) indicated ST2735 and ST11 as the predominant types in children and adults, respectively. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) identified clonal transmission patterns of ST11 blaKPC-2 and ST15 blaOXA-232 across both age groups. Notably, this study reports the first instance of ST1114-type CRKP co-producing blaNDM-5 and blaOXA-181 in the NICU.Conclusion: This study reveals distinct resistance mechanisms and epidemiology in CRKP from children and adults. This study aimed to investigate the effects of spironolactone on osteoporosis and future fracture risk in middle-aged and elderly hypertensive patients, revealing its potential benefits for bone health.Methods: Propensity score matching was employed in this study to create matched groups of spironolactone users and non-users at a 1:4 ratio. We investigated the association between spironolactone use and the risk of osteoporosis using multivariate logistic regression analysis. Furthermore, we conducted multivariate linear regression analysis to explore the relationship between cumulative dosage and the FRAX score. Subgroup analysis was also performed to assess the effects under different stratification conditions.Results: In both pre-match and post-match analyses, multivariable logistic regression revealed a significant reduction in the risk of osteoporosis in the spironolactone usage group (pre-match: odds ratios [OR] 0.406, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.280– 0.588; post-match: OR 0.385, 95% CI, 0.259– 0.571). Furthermore, post-match multivariable linear regression demonstrated a clear negative correlation between cumulative spironolactone dosage and the FRAX score. Subgroup analyses consistently supported these findings.Conclusion: This study offers evidence supporting the significant positive impact of the antihypertensive drug spironolactone on bone health, resulting in a substantial reduction in the risk of osteoporosis and future fractures in hypertensive patients. Despite advancements in nanotherapy, the limitations of single-treatment modalities and significant side effects persist. To tackle lung cancer effectively, we devised a temperature-sensitive hydrogel-based local injection system with near-infrared triggered drug release. Utilizing 2D MXene nanosheets as carriers loaded with R837 and cisplatin (DDP), encapsulated within a temperature-sensitive hydrogel-forming PEG-MXene@DDP@R837@SHDS (MDR@SHDS), we administered in situ injections of MDR@SHDS into tumor tissues combined with photothermal therapy (PTT). The immune adjuvant R837 enhances dendritic cell (DC) maturation and tumor cell phagocytosis, while PTT induces tumor cell apoptosis and necrosis by converting light energy into heat energy.Methods: Material characterization employed transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, phase transition temperature, and near-infrared thermography. In vitro experiments assessed Lewis cell proliferation and apoptosis using CCK-8, Edu, and TUNEL assays. In vivo experiments on C57 mouse Lewis transplant tumors evaluated the photothermal effect via near-infrared thermography and assessed DC maturation and CD4+/CD8+ T cell ratios using flow cytometry. The in vivo anti-tumor efficacy of MDR@SHDS was confirmed by tumor growth curve recording and HE and TUNEL staining of tumor sections.Results: The hydrogel exhibited excellent temperature sensitivity, controlled release properties, and high biocompatibility. In vitro experiments revealed that MDR@SHDS combined with PTT had a greater inhibitory effect on tumor cell proliferation compared to MDR@SHD alone. 16. Performance assessment of helicon wave heating and current drive in EXL-50 spherical torus plasmas

Abstract: Analysis of helicon wave heating and current drive capability in EXL-50 spherical torus plasmas has been conducted. It is found that the driven current increases with the launched parallel refractive index $n_{||}$ and peaks around $n_{||} = 4.0$ when the frequency of the helicon wave is between 300~MHz and 380~MHz. The helicon wave current drive efficiency shows a relatively stable upward trend with increasing plasma temperature. Moreover, the driven current decreases as the plasma density increases. We also analyzed the current drive with helicon waves of 150~MHz and 170~MHz and found that the driven current at a lower frequency was lower than that at a higher frequency. A positive proportional relationship exists between the driven current and $n_{||}$. Besides, as $n_{||}$ increases, the profile of the driven current becomes wider. Finally, the effect of the scrape-off layer (SOL) region on the helicon wave current drive was also investigated.

17. Augmented Deep Unfolding for Downlink Beamforming in Multi-cell Massive MIMO With Limited Feedback

Abstract: In limited feedback multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) cellular networks, users send quantized information about the channel conditions to the associated base station (BS) for downlink beamforming. However, channel quantization and beamforming have been treated as two separate tasks conventionally, which makes it difficult to achieve global system optimality. In this paper, we propose an augmented deep unfolding (ADU) approach that jointly optimizes the beamforming scheme at the BSs and the channel quantization scheme at the users. In particular, the classic WMMSE beamformer is unrolled and a deep neural network (DNN) is leveraged to pre-process its input to enhance the performance. The variational information bottleneck technique is adopted to further improve the performance when the feedback capacity is strictly restricted. 18. Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Aided Maneuvering Target Sensing: True Velocity Estimation

Abstract: Maneuvering target sensing will be an important service of future vehicular networks, where precise velocity estimation is one of the core tasks. To this end, the recently proposed integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) provides a promising platform for achieving accurate velocity estimation. However, with one mono-static ISAC base station (BS), only the radial projection of the true velocity can be estimated, which causes serious estimation error. In this paper, we investigate the estimation of the true velocity of a maneuvering target with the assistance of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). We propose an efficient velocity estimation algorithm by exploiting the two perspectives from the BS and IRS to the target. We propose a two-stage scheme where the true velocity can be recovered based on the Doppler frequency of the BS-target link and BS-IRS-target link. Experimental results validate that the true velocity can be precisely recovered and demonstrate the advantage of adding the IRS.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors in extensive stage small cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC) have been shown to be suitable for patients who experienced better overall survival and progress-free survival and have been approved as the first-line treatment for ES-SCLC. In this report, we described two ES-SCLC patients developed cystic BMs after immunotherapy, after which the patients continued to treat the primary lesion with immune checkpoint inhibitors and the cystic BMs with radiotherapy.Case Description: Two male patients were diagnosed with ES-SCLC at the first admission and were subsequently treated with immunotherapy plus platinum therapy, during which cystic BMs developed. One patient received whole brain radiotherapy and the other received whole brain radiotherapy and Gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS). Immunotherapy was continued after the brain lesions were controlled. It has been 33 months since the first patient was diagnosed and is now in stable condition. The other patient achieved an overall survival of 30 months.Conclusion: This report describes two patients with cystic brain metastases in ES-SCLC. Whole brain radiotherapy has a good effect on local control of cystic brain metastases in small cell lung cancer and can significantly improve the symptoms of patients. At the same time, we treat immunotherapy as the first-line treatment, and then perform cross-immunotherapy after disease progression, combined with anti-vascular targeting drugs. However, the effect of aPD-L1 inhibitors limited by the tumor microenvironment makes most patients exhibit immunotherapy resistance.Methods: We conjugated the Sialyl Lewis X with a polyethylene glycol-coated ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide (USPIO-PEG) to form UPS nanoparticles (USPIO-PEG-SLex, termed UPS). The physicochemical properties of UPS were tested and characterized. Transmission electron microscopy and ICP-OES were used to observe the cellular uptake and targeting ability of UPS. Flow cytometry, mitochondrial membrane potential staining, live-dead staining and scratch assay were used to verify the in vitro photothermal effect of UPS, and the stimulation of UPS on immune-related pathways at the gene level was analyzed by sequencing. Biological safety analysis and pharmacokinetic analysis of UPS were performed. Finally, the amplification effect of UPS-mediated photothermal therapy on aPD-L1-mediated immunotherapy and the corresponding mechanism were studied.Results: In vitro experiments showed that UPS had strong photothermal therapy ability and was able to stimulate 5 immune-related pathways. In vivo, when the PTT assisted aPD-L1 treatment, it exhibited a significant increase in CD4+ T cell infiltration by 14.46-fold and CD8+ T cell infiltration by 14.79-fold, along with elevated secretion of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interferon-gamma, comparing with alone aPD-L1. This PTT assisted aPD-L1 therapy achieved a significant inhibition of both primary tumors and distant tumors compared to the alone aPD-L1, demonstrating a significant difference.Conclusion: The nanotheranostic agent UPS has been introduced into immunotherapy, which has effectively broadened its application in biomedicine. The levels of hematological parameters during pregnancy can reflect inflammatory conditions in pregnant women. This study aims to describe the dynamic change of blood cell parameters from the first trimester (6– 12 weeks of gestation) to the second trimester (24– 28 weeks of gestation) and to investigate the associations of these biomarkers with the risk of GDM.Methods: This study was a prospective double-center study conducted in Beijing, China (clinical trial number: NCT03246295). Hematological parameters were tested four times during the follow-up. Logistic regression analysis and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis were used to explore the association and predictive ability of hematological parameters for GDM.Results: There were 258 of 1027 pregnant women in our study developed GDM. Among the 1027 pregnant women, white blood cells (WBC) gradually increased, and red blood cells (RBC), hemoglobin (HGB), and platelet (PLT) tended to decrease from the first trimester to second trimester. After adjusting for confounding factors, higher levels of RBC, HGB, and PLT in both early and middle pregnancy were positively associated with GDM risk, whereas the level of WBC was associated with GDM risk only in early pregnancy. WBC, RBC, HGB, and PLT in early and middle pregnancy were all correlated with fasting insulin (FINS) in early pregnancy.Conclusion: Higher levels of hematological parameters in early and middle pregnancy were associated with glucose metabolism in early pregnancy and the subsequent risk of GDM.Keywords: hematological parameters, gestational diabetes mellitus, inflammation, insulin resistance, prospective study

This approach facilitates the establishment of a medical adverse event management system that encourages reporting and fosters a blame-free reporting culture, while simultaneously implementing quality management across the entire process. The regular utilization of the QCC facilitates ongoing quality improvement. Furthermore, for sentinel events and patient harm incidents with educational values, the study employs the Incident Decision Tree (IDT) to determine appropriate actions. Additionally, the hospital initiates RCA for system-wide improvements, focusing on areas such as management, institutional processes, and environmental aspects. Moreover, an internal medical quality improvement case competition is organized, with outstanding cases being selected to participate in the multidimensional quality management competition organized by the National Quality Management Alliance.Results: The study reveals a significant improvement in employees’ awareness of adverse events, the percentage of employees reporting adverse events increased significantly from 39.15% in 2019 to 49.77% in 2022, P=0.002. Furthermore, the adverse event reporting rate has risen significantly from 2.78% (2019) to 5.96% (2022), P=0.002. Additionally, each department has been able to utilize QCC or RCA tools for quality improvement, thereby further reinforcing the development of a patient safety culture.Conclusion: Multidimensional quality management tools play a crucial role in establishing a hospital’s adverse event management system, promoting continuous improvement in medical quality, ensuring patient safety, and effectively implementing a culture of patient safety.Keywords: multidimensional quality management tools, adverse events, management system, patient safety

With the development of technology, pulse waveform analysis using photoplethysmography (PPG) has become more feasible for evaluating BP. This study aimed to evaluate the changes of vascular elasticity and blood volume over time by using the characteristic parameters extracted by PPG. We reviewed the latest progress and literature on the observation of capillary network characteristics in hypertensive and non-hypertensive patients by PPG, the influence of different drugs on microcirculation characteristics in hypertensive patients with PPG, and further explored the key relationship between microcirculation and hypertension. We found that the PPG waveform produced by the fingertips of hypertensive patients is very different from that of healthy people, and the PPG waveform changes significantly during diastolic period after antihypertensive treatment. 25. Collaborative Sensing in Perceptive Mobile Networks: Opportunities and Challenges

Abstract: With the development of innovative applications that demand accurate environment information, e.g., autonomous driving, sensing becomes an important requirement for future wireless networks. To this end, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) provides a promising platform to exploit the synergy between sensing and communication, where perceptive mobile networks (PMNs) were proposed to add accurate sensing capability to existing wireless networks. The well-developed cellular networks offer exciting opportunities for sensing, including large coverage, strong computation and communication power, and most importantly networked sensing, where the perspectives from multiple sensing nodes can be collaboratively utilized for sensing the same target. However, PMNs also face big challenges such as the inherent interference between sensing and communication, the complex sensing environment, and the tracking of high-speed targets by cellular networks. This paper provides a comprehensive review on the design of PMNs, covering the popular network architectures, sensing protocols, standing research problems, and available solutions. Several future research directions that are critical for the development of PMNs are also discussed.

Abstract: Efficient massive/ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detection algorithms with satisfactory performance and low complexity are critical to meet the high throughput and ultra-low latency requirements in 5G and beyond communications, given the extremely large number of antennas. In this paper, we propose a low-complexity graph neural network (GNN) enhanced approximate message passing (AMP) algorithm, AMP-GNN, for massive/ultra-massive MIMO detection. The structure of the neural network is customized by unfolding the AMP algorithm and introducing the GNN module for multiuser interference cancellation. Numerical results will show that the proposed AMP-GNN significantly improves the performance of the AMP detector and achieves comparable performance as the state-of-the-art deep learning-based MIMO detectors but with reduced computational complexity. 27. FedKL: Tackling Data Heterogeneity in Federated Reinforcement Learning by Penalizing KL Divergence

Abstract: As a distributed learning paradigm, Federated Learning (FL) faces the communication bottleneck issue due to many rounds of model synchronization and aggregation. Heterogeneous data further deteriorates the situation by causing slow convergence. Although the impact of data heterogeneity on supervised FL has been widely studied, the related investigation for Federated Reinforcement Learning (FRL) is still in its infancy. In this paper, we first define the type and level of data heterogeneity for policy gradient based FRL systems. By inspecting the connection between the global and local objective functions, we prove that local training can benefit the global objective, if the local update is properly penalized by the total variation (TV) distance between the local and global policies. A necessary condition for the global policy to be learn-able from the local policy is also derived, which is directly related to the heterogeneity level. Based on the theoretical result, a Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence based penalty is proposed, which, different from the conventional method that penalizes the model divergence in the parameter space, directly constrains the model outputs in the distribution space. Convergence proof of the proposed algorithm is also provided. By jointly penalizing the divergence of the local policy from the global policy with a global penalty and constraining each iteration of the local training with a local penalty, the proposed method achieves a better trade-off between training speed (step size) and convergence. Experiment results on two popular Reinforcement Learning (RL) experiment platforms demonstrate the advantage of the proposed algorithm over existing methods in accelerating and stabilizing the training process with heterogeneous data.

28. Graph Neural Networks for Wireless Communications: From Theory to Practice

Abstract: Deep learning-based approaches have been developed to solve challenging problems in wireless communications, leading to promising results. Early attempts adopted neural network architectures inherited from applications such as computer vision. They often yield poor performance in large scale networks (i.e., poor scalability) and unseen network settings (i.e., poor generalization). To resolve these issues, graph neural networks (GNNs) have been recently adopted, as they can effectively exploit the domain knowledge, i.e., the graph topology in wireless communications problems. GNN-based methods can achieve near-optimal performance in large-scale networks and generalize well under different system settings, but the theoretical underpinnings and design guidelines remain elusive, which may hinder their practical implementations. This paper endeavors to fill both the theoretical and practical gaps. For theoretical guarantees, we prove that GNNs achieve near-optimal performance in wireless networks with much fewer training samples than traditional neural architectures. Specifically, to solve an optimization problem on an $n$-node graph (where the nodes may represent users, base stations, or antennas), GNNs' generalization error and required number of training samples are $\mathcal{O}(n)$ and $\mathcal{O}(n^2)$ times lower than the unstructured multi-layer perceptrons. For design guidelines, we propose a unified framework that is applicable to general design problems in wireless networks, which includes graph modeling, neural architecture design, and theory-guided performance enhancement. Extensive simulations, which cover a variety of important problems and network settings, verify our theory and the effectiveness of the proposed design framework.

29. Communication-Efficient Federated Distillation with Active Data Sampling

Abstract: Federated learning (FL) is a promising paradigm to enable privacy-preserving deep learning from distributed data. Most previous works are based on federated average (FedAvg), which, however, faces several critical issues, including a high communication overhead and the difficulty in dealing with heterogeneous model architectures. Federated Distillation (FD) is a recently proposed alternative to enable communication-efficient and robust FL, which achieves orders of magnitude reduction of the communication overhead compared with FedAvg and is flexible to handle heterogeneous models at the clients. However, so far there is no unified algorithmic framework or theoretical analysis for FD-based methods. In this paper, we first present a generic meta-algorithm for FD and investigate the influence of key parameters through empirical experiments. Then, we verify the empirical observations theoretically. Based on the empirical results and theory, we propose a communication-efficient FD algorithm with active data sampling to improve the model performance and reduce the communication overhead. Abstract: The normal state of high-Tc cuprates has been considered one of the essential topics in high-temperature superconductivity research. However, compared to the high magnetic fields study of it, understanding a photoinduced normal state remains elusive. Here, we explore a photoinduced normal state of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.67}$ (YBCO) through a charge density wave (CDW) with time-resolved resonant soft x-ray scattering, as well as a high-magnetic field x-ray scattering. In the non-equilibrium state in which people predict a quenched superconducting state based on the previous optical spectroscopies, we experimentally observed a similar analogy to the competition between superconductivity and CDW shown in the equilibrium state. We further observe that the broken pairing states in the superconducting CuO$_2$ plane via the optical pump lead to nucleation of three-dimensional CDW precursor correlation, revealing that the photoinduced CDW is similar to phenomena shown under magnetic fields. Cox regression was used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Interaction tests and subgroup analyses were conducted. The predictive performance of various inflammatory indicators for stroke was compared using the area under the curve (AUC), continuous net reclassification improvement (NRI), and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI).Results: During a median follow-up period of 3.2 years, 640 strokes were recorded, of which 526 were ischemic and the remainder hemorrhagic. After adjustment for confounders, compared to the reference group, the HRs (95% CI) of stroke were 1.28 (95% CI, 1.01– 1.64) and 1.46 (95% CI, 1.14– 1.88) for participants in the second and third tertiles, respectively. We observed interactions between SIRI and homocysteine levels (< 15 vs. ≥ 15 μmol/L) (p for interaction = 0.014) on ischemic stroke risk. Furthermore, the AUC, NRI, and IDI analyses demonstrated that SIRI exhibited better predictive value for stroke risk when compared to other indicators. Similar results were observed for both ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes.Conclusion: Elevated SIRI levels were significantly associated with the risk of stroke and its subtypes in elderly patients with hypertension, suggesting its potential as a promising indicator for stroke risk in this population. 35. Perceptive Mobile Network with Distributed Target Monitoring Terminals: Leaking Communication Energy for Sensing

However, the interference management and resource allocation between sensing and communication have not been fully studied. In this paper, we consider the design of perceptive mobile networks (PMNs) by adding sensing capability to current cellular networks. To avoid the full-duplex operation, we propose the PMN with distributed target monitoring terminals (TMTs) where passive TMTs are deployed over wireless networks to locate the sensing target (ST). We jointly optimize the transmit and receive beamformers towards the communication user terminals (UEs) and the ST by alternating-optimization (AO) and prove its convergence. To reduce computation complexity and obtain physical insights, we further investigate the use of linear transceivers, including zero forcing and beam synthesis (B-syn). Our analysis revealed interesting physical insights regarding interference management and resource allocation between sensing and communication: 1) instead of forming dedicated sensing signals, it is more efficient to redesign the communication signals for both communication and sensing purposes and "leak" communication energy for sensing; 2) the amount of energy leakage from one UE to the ST depends on their relative locations., Comment: This paper has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication

36. Outage and Finite-SNR DMT Analysis for IRS-aided MIMO Systems: How Large IRSs Need to Be?

Abstract: Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) are promising enablers for high-capacity wireless communication systems by constructing favorable channels between the transmitter and receiver. However, general, accurate, and tractable outage analysis for IRS-aided multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems is not available in the literature. In this paper, we first characterize the mutual information (MI) of IRS-aided MIMO systems by capitalizing on large random matrix theory (RMT). Based on this result, a closed-form approximation for the outage probability is derived and a gradient-based algorithm is proposed to minimize the outage probability with statistical channel state information (CSI). We also investigate the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) with the finite signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Based on these theoretical results, we further study the impact of the IRS size on system performance. In the high SNR regime, we provide closed-form expressions for the ergodic mutual information (EMI) and outage probability as a function of the IRS size, which analytically reveal that the benefit of increasing the IRS size saturates quickly. Simulation results validate the accuracy of the theoretical analysis and confirm the increasing cost for deploying larger IRSs to improve system performance. Abstract: Cell-free massive MIMO is one of the core technologies for future wireless networks. It is expected to bring enormous benefits, including ultra-high reliability, data throughput, energy efficiency, and uniform coverage. As a radically distributed system, the performance of cell-free massive MIMO critically relies on efficient distributed processing algorithms. In this paper, we propose a distributed expectation propagation (EP) detector for cell-free massive MIMO, which consists of two modules: a nonlinear module at the central processing unit (CPU) and a linear module at each access point (AP). The turbo principle in iterative channel decoding is utilized to compute and pass the extrinsic information between the two modules. An analytical framework is provided to characterize the asymptotic performance of the proposed EP detector with a large number of antennas. Furthermore, a distributed iterative channel estimation and data detection (ICD) algorithm is developed to handle the practical setting with imperfect channel state information (CSI). Abstract: Superconductivity in the cuprates is found to be intertwined with charge and spin density waves. Determining the interactions between the different types of order is crucial for understanding these important materials. Here, we elucidate the role of the charge density wave (CDW) in the prototypical cuprate La$_{1.885}$Sr$_{0.115}$CuO$_4$, by studying the effects of large magnetic fields ($H$) up to 24 Tesla. At low temperatures ($T$), the observed CDW peaks reveal two distinct regions in the material: a majority phase with short-range CDW coexisting with superconductivity, and a minority phase with longer-range CDW coexisting with static spin density wave (SDW). With increasing magnetic field, the CDW first grows smoothly in a manner similar to the SDW. However, at high fields we discover a sudden increase in the CDW amplitude upon entering the vortex-liquid state. Our results signify strong coupling of the CDW to mobile superconducting vortices and link enhanced CDW amplitude with local superconducting pairing across the $H-T$ phase diagram., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: The recently commercialized fifth-generation (5G) wireless communication networks achieved many improvements, including air interface enhancement, spectrum expansion, and network intensification by several key technologies, such as massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), millimeter-wave communications, and ultra-dense networking. Despite the deployment of 5G commercial systems, wireless communications is still facing many challenges to enable connected intelligence and a myriad of applications such as industrial Internet-of-things, autonomous systems, brain-computer interfaces, digital twin, tactile Internet, etc. Therefore, it is urgent to start research on the sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication systems. Among the candidate technologies for such systems, cell-free massive MIMO which combines the advantages of distributed systems and massive MIMO is considered as a key solution to enhance the wireless transmission efficiency and becomes the international frontier. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study on cell-free massive MIMO for 6G wireless communication networks, especially from the signal processing perspective. We focus on enabling physical layer technologies for cell-free massive MIMO, such as user association, pilot assignment, transmitter and receiver design, as well as power control and allocation. 40. Learn to Communicate with Neural Calibration: Scalability and Generalization

Abstract: The conventional design of wireless communication systems typically relies on established mathematical models that capture the characteristics of different communication modules. Unfortunately, such design cannot be easily and directly applied to future wireless networks, which will be characterized by large-scale ultra-dense networks whose design complexity scales exponentially with the network size. Furthermore, such networks will vary dynamically in a significant way, which makes it intractable to develop comprehensive analytical models. Recently, deep learning-based approaches have emerged as potential alternatives for designing complex and dynamic wireless systems. However, existing learning-based methods have limited capabilities to scale with the problem size and to generalize with varying network settings. In this paper, we propose a scalable and generalizable neural calibration framework for future wireless system design, where a neural network is adopted to calibrate the input of conventional model-based algorithms. Specifically, the backbone of a traditional time-efficient algorithm is integrated with deep neural networks to achieve a high computational efficiency, while enjoying enhanced performance. The permutation equivariance property, carried out by the topological structure of wireless systems, is furthermore utilized to develop a generalizable neural network architecture. The proposed neural calibration framework is applied to solve challenging resource management problems in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Abstract: The effectiveness of multiple electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) harmonics has been thoroughly investigated in context of high current drive efficiency, generally observed in fully non-inductive operation of the low aspect ratio EXL-50 spherical tokamak (ST) powered by electron cyclotron (EC) waves. The Fokker-Plank equation is numerically solved to obtain electron distribution function, under steady state of the relativistic nonlinear Coulomb collision and quasi-linear diffusion operators, for calculating plasma current driven by the injected EC wave. For the extra-ordinary EC wave, simulation results unfold a mechanism by which electrons moving around the cold second harmonic ECR layer strongly resonate with higher harmonics via the relativistic Doppler shifted resonance condition. This feature is in fact evident above a certain value of input EC wave power in simulation, indicating it to be a non-linear phenomenon. Similar to the experimental observation, high efficiency in current drive (over 1 A/W) has indeed been found in simulation for a typical low density ($\sim 1\times10^{18}~m^{-3}$), low temperature ($\lesssim 100$ eV) plasma of EXL-50 by taking into account multi-pass absorptions in our simulation model. However, such characteristic is not found in the ordinary EC-wave study for both single-pass and multi-pass simulations, suggesting it as inefficient in driving current on our ST device., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures. 42. Bias for the Trace of the Resolvent and Its Application on Non-Gaussian and Non-centered MIMO Channels

Abstract: The mutual information (MI) of Gaussian multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channels has been evaluated by utilizing random matrix theory (RMT) and shown to asymptotically follow Gaussian distribution, where the ergodic mutual information (EMI) converges to a deterministic quantity. However, with non-Gaussian channels, there is a bias between the EMI and its deterministic equivalent (DE), whose evaluation is not available in the literature. This bias of the EMI is related to the bias for the trace of the resolvent in large RMT. In this paper, we first derive the bias for the trace of the resolvent, which is further extended to compute the bias for the linear spectral statistics (LSS). Then, we apply the above results on non-Gaussian MIMO channels to determine the bias for the EMI. It is also proved that the bias for the EMI is $-0.5$ times of that for the variance of the MI. Finally, the derived bias is utilized to modify the central limit theory (CLT) and calculate the outage probability. Abstract: In cell-free massive MIMO networks, an efficient distributed detection algorithm is of significant importance. In this paper, we propose a distributed expectation propagation (EP) detector for cell-free massive MIMO. The detector is composed of two modules, a nonlinear module at the central processing unit (CPU) and a linear module at the access point (AP). The turbo principle in iterative decoding is utilized to compute and pass the extrinsic information between modules. An analytical framework is then provided to characterize the asymptotic performance of the proposed EP detector with a large number of antennas. Abstract: Channel estimation and beamforming play critical roles in frequency-division duplexing (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. However, these two modules have been treated as two stand-alone components, which makes it difficult to achieve a global system optimality. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based approach that directly optimizes the beamformers at the base station according to the received uplink pilots, thereby, bypassing the explicit channel estimation. Different from the existing fully data-driven approach where all the modules are replaced by deep neural networks (DNNs), a neural calibration method is proposed to improve the scalability of the end-to-end design. In particular, the backbone of conventional time-efficient algorithms, i.e., the least-squares (LS) channel estimator and the zero-forcing (ZF) beamformer, is preserved and DNNs are leveraged to calibrate their inputs for better performance. The permutation equivariance property of the formulated resource allocation problem is then identified to design a low-complexity neural network architecture. Abstract: Resource management plays a pivotal role in wireless networks, which, unfortunately, leads to challenging NP-hard problems. Artificial Intelligence (AI), especially deep learning techniques, has recently emerged as a disruptive technology to solve such challenging problems in a real-time manner. However, although promising results have been reported, practical design guidelines and performance guarantees of AI-based approaches are still missing. In this paper, we endeavor to address two fundamental questions: 1) What are the main advantages of AI-based methods compared with classical techniques; and 2) Which neural network should we choose for a given resource management task. For the first question, four advantages are identified and discussed. For the second question, \emph{optimality gap}, i.e., the gap to the optimal performance, is proposed as a measure for selecting model architectures, as well as, for enabling a theoretical comparison between different AI-based approaches. Specifically, for $K$-user interference management problem, we theoretically show that graph neural networks (GNNs) are superior to multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs), and the performance gap between these two methods grows with $\sqrt{K}$., Comment: Meditcom 2021

49. IRS-aided MIMO Systems over Double-scattering Channels: Impact of Channel Rank Deficiency

Abstract: Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) are promising enablers for next-generation wireless communications due to their reconfigurability and high energy efficiency in improving poor propagation condition of channels, e.g., limited scattering environment. However, most existing works assumed full-rank channels requiring rich scatters, which may not be available in practice. To analyze the impact of rank-deficient channels and mitigate the ensued performance loss, we consider a large-scale IRS-aided MIMO system with statistical channel state information (CSI), where the double-scattering channel is adopted to model rank deficiency. By leveraging random matrix theory (RMT), we first derive a deterministic approximation (DA) of the ergodic rate with low computational complexity and prove the existence and uniqueness of the DA parameters. Then, we propose an alternating optimization algorithm for maximizing the DA with respect to phase shifts and signal covariance matrices. By one-to-two propensity score matching for age and sex, the control group of those not re-testing positive during the same period served as matched control.Results: A total of 223 patients were included in our study, 94 in re-positive group and 129 in non-re-positive group. The result shows that the rates of nasal douche treatment in the non-re-positive group were considerably higher than that of the re-positive group. And the Ct value of nasal douche group increased faster than that of non-nasal douche group after the Ct value reaching ≥ 35. Further analysis revealed that the higher the Ct value at the time of readmission, the shorter the time of average Ct values to reach ≥ 35.Conclusion: These findings suggest that nasal douche is beneficial to shorten the time of virus nucleic acid turning negative, thereby reducing the incidence of re-positive. The prevention and control of epidemics focuses on re-positive patients with Ct values < 35.Keywords: COVID-19, nasal douche, re-positive, RT-PCR
