The Psychological Research Preregistration-Quantitative (PRP-QUANT) Template provides researchers with a comprehensive list of elements to consider when planning a psychological study. We assessed its usability and researchers’ intention to use it. We conducted a usability test (study 1) and surveyed researchers who submitted or reviewed a preregistration created with the template (study 2, authors: N = 19, reviewers: N = 29) regarding their impression of the template. For the usability test, we recruited participants via the mailing lists of the German Psychological Society, the American Psychological Association, and the British Psychological Society, and social media. Participants answered selected template and web probing items and provided an overall rating (N = 88). Based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), we expected that the intention to use the template is influenced by performance expectancy (moderated by age), effort expectancy (moderated by age and experience), and social influence (moderated by age, experience, and voluntariness, N = 60). The results suggest that the PRP-QUANT Template is suitable for different research areas within psychology, is evaluated as effective, and perceived positively. Performance expectancy and all predictors combined significantly predicted researchers’ intention to use the template.

In diesem Termin wird der Service PreReg des ZPID vorgestellt, welcher die einfache Erstellung und Veröffentlichung von Prä-Registrierungen erlaubt. Studien zu prä-registrieren ist eine wirkungsvolle Open-Science-Technik, da sie eine transparente Dokumentation der Studienpläne ermöglicht. Der Workshop wird in zwei Teile gegliedert sein: Im ersten Teil werden wir besprechen, was Prä-Registrierung überhaupt ist und warum es wichtig ist, dass Forscher*innen ihre Studien prä-registrieren. Im zweiten Teil werden wir uns den Prä-Registrierungs-Prozess näher anschauen und lernen, wie man mithilfe von PreReg eine Prä-Registrierung erstellen kann. Hierfür werden drei Punkte genauer beleuchtet: 1) Welche Vorlagen auf PreReg zur Verfügung stehen, die uns bei der Erstellung unserer Prä-Registrierung unterstützen können 2) In welchen Formaten wir unsere Prä-Registrierung verfassen können 3) Wie man eine Prä-Registrierung auf der PreReg-Plattform veröffentlicht In einer Live-Demonstration werden alle wichtigen Schritte vom Schreiben bis zur Veröffentlichung der Prä-Registrierung durchgespielt. Neben PreReg werden wir auch den Service PsychNotebook des ZPID nutzen, welcher die Verwendung von RStudio und JupyterLab im Browser ermöglicht.

R is a very powerful language for statistical computing in many disciplines of research and has a steep learning curve. The software is open source, freely available and has a thriving community. This crash course provides an overview of Base-R concepts for beginners and covers the topics 1) introduction into R, 2) reading, saving, and viewing data, 3) selecting and changing objects in R, and 4) descriptive statistics.This course was held by Lisa Spitzer on September 3, 2021, as a precursor to the R tidyverse Workshop by Aur��lien Ginolhac and Roland Krause (September 8 - 10, 2021). This workshop is aimed at (psychological) researchers that are relatively new to preregistration or who would like to learn more about different options for creating preregistrations. Specifically, this workshop will be divided into two parts: In the first part, I will illustrate what a preregistration is and why it is important that researchers preregister their studies. In the second part, I will guide the participants through the preregistration process and give practical advice. I will present various possible routes for creating preregistrations, focusing on R Markdown (using the prereg package). Furthermore, I will present a new preregistration template that has been developed by members of the American Psychological Association (APA), the British Psychological Society (BPS), the German Psychological Society (DGPs), the Center for Open Science (COS), and the Leibniz Institute for Psychology (ZPID), as well as a new preregistration platform provided by my institute (ZPID). Since I would like to work with R Markdown, it would be nice if participants could install R (https://cran.r-project.org/) and RStudio (https://rstudio.com/products/rstudio/#rstudio-desktop, download the free "RStudio Desktop - open source edition").

Recently in psychological science and many related fields, a surprisingly large amount of experiments could not be replicated by independent researchers. A non-replication could indicate that a previous finding might have been a false positive statistical result and the effect does not exist. However, it could also mean that a specific detail of the experimental procedure is essential for the effect to emerge, which might not have been included in the replication attempt. Therefore any replication attempt that does not replicate the original effect is most informative when the original procedure is closely adhered to. One proposed solution to facilitate the empirical reproducibility of the experimental procedures in psychology is to upload the experimental script and materials to a public repository. However, we believe that merely providing the materials of an experimental procedure is not sufficient, as many software solutions are not freely available, software solutions might change, and it is time consuming to set up the procedure. We argue that there is a simple solution to these problems when an experiment is conducted using computers: recording an example procedure with a screen capture software and providing the video in an online repository. We therefore provide a brief tutorial on screen recordings using an open source screen recording software. With this information, individual researchers should be able to record their experimental procedures and we hope to facilitate the use of screen recordings in computer assisted data collection procedures.
