9. Optimisation of fabrication processes for stable and scalable perovskite solar cells

Abstract

In recent years metal halide perovskites have become a promising photovoltaic (PV) technology, most notable for their high-power conversion efficiencies and potential for cheap, solution-processable, roll-to-roll compatible module production. In this thesis, the materials and fabrication processes that are used to make perovskite photovoltaics are investigated, developing them in such a way to make them cheaper, scalable, and transferable to high throughput manufacturing processes, whilst simultaneously aiming to achieve and maintain efficiency and stability. A family of carbazole-based conjugated polymers is identified as potential set of materials for hole selective charge transporting materials. A chemically doped polymer poly[N-9'-heptadecanyl-2,7-carbazole-alt-5,5-(4',7'-di-2-thienyl-2',1',3'benzothiadiazole)] (PCDTBT) hole transport layer is used with multi cation formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3) and methylammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr3) perovskite (FAPbI3)0.85(MAPbBr3)0.15, to achieve standard architecture devices with up to 15.9 % power conversion efficiency, with clear evidence that the chemical doping increases the conductivity and photostability of the PCDTBT. The stability of perovskite solar cells is a vital issue that must be addressed in further detail if perovskite PV is to become a commercially viable technology. Here, the importance of hydrophobic hole transport layers for perovskite solar cell stability is identified. Facile formation of a moisture free perovskite is achieved by combining the hydrophobic polymer poly(4-butylphenyldiphenylamine) (polyTPD) with a volatile methylamine bubbled acetonitrile methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite solution. A multi-layer encapsulation system, comprised of a protective polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) interlayer and a UV-curable epoxy, is used to stabilise perovskite solar cells containing these materials, leading to MAPbI3 based inverted architecture devices with lifetimes over 1000 hours. It is also found that solvent-annealed MAPbI3 devices (which generate higher photocurrent) have reduced stability and undergo enhanced burn-in. This result demonstrates that initially enhanced device power conversion efficiency does not necessarily translate to a device having long-term stability. Triple cation CsI0.05((FAPbI3)0.83(MAPbBr3)0.17)0.95 based standard architecture perovskite solar cells are also shown to have impressive stability when encapsulated with a multilayer encapsulation system that comprises of a protective aluminium oxide (Al2O3) interlayer and a UV-curable epoxy. To pursue low-cost, scalable fabrication of perovskite solar cells, inorganic metal oxide charge transport layers have been explored. Here, the materials nickel oxide (NiO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) have been deposited through reactive electronbeam evaporation. NiO and TiO2 are then utilised to create devices with champion power conversion efficiencies up to 15.8 % and 13.9 % respectively. Both materials are compatible with MAPbI3 and CsI0.05((FAPbI3)0.83(MAPbBr3)0.17)0.95 perovskite active layers. Critically, it is found that such metal oxides can be deposited at high speed (nm/s), and do not require a high-temperature anneal step after deposition, making reactive electron-beam evaporation compatible with roll-to-roll processing on sensitive flexible polymeric substrates. Finally, a new type of back-contact perovskite PV architecture is explored, solar micro-grooves. Here, such embossed polymeric micro-grooves are directionally coated with evaporable p- or n- type electrodes on to opposing groove walls, and then filled with the highly volatile acetonitrile solution processed MAPbI3 perovskite. These flexible, rare-metal-free, back-contact perovskite solar grooves make use of the p-type reactive electron-beam deposited NiO, and are fabricated without thermal annealing. Individual grooves act as photovoltaic devices, which achieve power conversion efficiencies of up to 7.3 %. It is demonstrated that horizontally-spaced series connected grooves act as mini-modules, which were found to build up to 15 V open circuit voltage. Crucially, these back-contact minimodules are fully functional without the use of electrode patterning techniques such as electrodeposition, laser ablation, mechanical etching, or photoresist templating.

Abstract

Mobile ions in hybrid perovskite semiconductors introduce a new degree of freedom to electronic devices suggesting applications beyond photovoltaics. An intuitive device model describing the interplay between ionic and electronic charge transfer is needed to unlock the full potential of the technology. We describe the perovskite-contact interfaces as transistors which couple ionic charge redistribution to energetic barriers controlling electronic injection and recombination. This reveals an amplification factor between the out of phase electronic current and the ionic current. Our findings suggest a strategy to design thin film electronic components with large, tuneable, capacitor-like and inductor-like characteristics. The resulting simple equivalent circuit model, which we verified with time-dependent drift-diffusion simulations of measured impedance spectra, allows a general description and interpretation of perovskite solar cell behaviour., Comment: 12 pages main text, total 51 including supplementary information

Abstract

A wide range of conditions are characterised by focal neurological symptoms, yet the pathophysiolgy often remains poorly understood. This thesis has focussed on applying functional neuroimaging in clinical groups. Migraines with aura are amongst the most common conditions posing a significant burden to sufferers. Elevated connectivity was detected in the visual cortex of migraine with aura patients, potentially complementing one of the leading proposed mechanisms for attacks. Minor strokes patients are also affected by focal symptoms after events which in some cases can be prolonged. Altered connectivity was observed in a number of regions reflecting previous findings for acute stroke. A group of transient ischaemic attack patients were also analysed, revealing subtle differences necessitating further study. Lastly disorders of consciousness pose acute challenges for treatment and ongoing care. Task based imaging was applied to form a more accurate picture of residual cognition. Additionally the correlation between measures derived from resting state data and cerebral glucose consumption was explored.

Abstract

ObjectiveCerebral small vessel diseases (cSVDs) are a major cause of stroke and dementia. We used cutting-edge 7T-MRI techniques in patients with Cerebral Autosomal Dominant Arteriopathy with Subcortical Infarcts and Leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL), to establish which aspects of cerebral small vessel function are affected by this monogenic form of cSVD.MethodsWe recruited 23 CADASIL patients (age 51.1 ± 10.1 years, 52% women) and 13 age- and sex-matched controls (46.1 ± 12.6, 46% women). Small vessel function measures included: basal ganglia and centrum semiovale perforating artery blood flow velocity and pulsatility, vascular reactivity to a visual stimulus in the occipital cortex and reactivity to hypercapnia in the cortex, subcortical gray matter, white matter, and white matter hyperintensities.ResultsCompared with controls, CADASIL patients showed lower blood flow velocity and higher pulsatility index within perforating arteries of the centrum semiovale (mean difference − 0.09 cm/s, p = 0.03 and 0.20, p = 0.009) and basal ganglia (mean difference − 0.98 cm/s, p = 0.003 and 0.17, p = 0.06). Small vessel reactivity to a short visual stimulus was decreased (blood-oxygen-level dependent [BOLD] mean difference −0.21%, p = 0.04) in patients, while reactivity to hypercapnia was preserved in the cortex, subcortical gray matter, and normal appearing white matter. Abstract

Blood-brain barrier (BBB) is known to be impaired in cerebral small vessel disease (SVD), and is measurable by dynamic-contrast enhancement (DCE)-MRI. In a cohort of 69 patients (42 sporadic, 27 monogenic SVD), who underwent 3T MRI, including DCE and cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) sequences, we assessed the relationship of BBB-leakage hotspots to SVD lesions (lacunes, white matter hyperintensities (WMH), and microbleeds). We defined as hotspots the regions with permeability surface area product highest decile on DCE-derived maps within the white matter. We assessed factors associated with the presence and number of hotspots corresponding to SVD lesions in multivariable regression models adjusted for age, WMH volume, number of lacunes, and SVD type. We identified hotspots at lacune edges in 29/46 (63%) patients with lacunes, within WMH in 26/60 (43%) and at the WMH edges in 34/60 (57%) patients with WMH, and microbleed edges in 4/11 (36%) patients with microbleeds. In adjusted analysis, lower WMH-CVR was associated with presence and number of hotspots at lacune edges, and higher WMH volume with hotspots within WMH and at WMH edges, independently of the SVD type. Abstract

Introduction: Cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) measurements using blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are commonly used to assess the health of cerebral blood vessels, including in patients with cerebrovascular diseases; however, evidence and consensus regarding reliability and optimal processing are lacking. We aimed to assess the repeatability, accuracy and precision of voxel- and region-based CVR measurements at 3 T using a fixed inhaled (FI) CO2 stimulus in a healthy cohort. Methods: We simulated the effect of noise, delay constraints and voxel-versus region-based analysis on CVR parameters. Results were verified in 15 healthy volunteers (28.1±5.5 years, female: 53%) with a test-retest MRI experiment consisting of two CVR scans. CVR magnitude and delay in grey matter (GM) and white matter were computed for both analyses assuming a linear relationship between the BOLD signal and time-shifted end-tidal CO2 (EtCO2) profile. Results: Test-retest repeatability was high [mean (95% CI) inter-scan difference: -0.01 (-0.03, -0.00) %/mmHg for GM CVR magnitude; -0.3 (-1.2,0.6) s for GM CVR delay], but we detected a small systematic reduction in CVR magnitude at scan 2 versus scan 1, accompanied by a greater EtCO2 change [±1.0 (0.4,1.5) mmHg] and lower heart rate [-5.5 (-8.6,-2.4] bpm]. CVR magnitude estimates were higher for voxel-versus region-based analysis [difference in GM: ±0.02 (0.01,0.03) %/mmHg]. Findings were supported by simulation results, predicting a positive bias for voxelbased CVR estimates dependent on temporal contrast-to-noise ratio and delay fitting constraints and an underestimation for region-based CVR estimates. Discussion: BOLD CVR measurements using FI stimulus have good within-day repeatability in healthy volunteers. However, measurements may be influenced by physiological effects and the analysis protocol. 49. Enacting cinematically : a concept analysis of enactments and their philosophical worldbuilding

Abstract

In the subdiscipline of film studies that researches the relationship between films and philosophy, there is a longstanding debate about how to understand this relationship. Often articulated as an issue of film’s ability to ‘do’ philosophy, this debate questions whether film can contribute significant content to the field of philosophy, rather than merely acting as an example of pre-existing philosophical work. Those who defend film’s philosophical capacity often rely on the concept of cinematic thinking to do so. If films can be said to think, then the leap to philosophy is not far behind. However, even with considerable development of this concept, the debate between film and philosophy remains ongoing. As another way into this debate, this thesis develops the alternative concept of enactment by drawing from scholars like Daniel Frampton, Robert Sinnerbrink, and Stephen Mulhall. These scholars describe film’s philosophizing in active terms, sometimes claiming the films can enact philosophy. However, this concept is often overshadowed by cinematic thinking, leaving it vague and underdeveloped. To gain a better understanding of what enacting philosophy entails, this thesis analyses how the concept of enactment is already used in other philosophical works. Scholars like Nicholas Wolterstorff and Ashon T. Crawley study ritualistic religious practices as enactments that produce philosophically interesting results. By turning to these philosophers, a specifically cinematic understating of enactments is developed by comparison. Additionally, this thesis considers two case studies, Julie Dash’s Daughters of the Dust and Michael Haneke’s The White Ribbon. Both films illustrate divergent features of cinematic enactments, building a complex understanding of this concept. Through close attention to each film’s formal construction, a focus on enactments shows how films build a philosophical dialogue in their arrangement of formal features.
