Abstract

International audience; Reliable discharge measurements are indispensable for an effective management of natural water resources and floods. Limitations of classical current meter profiling and stage-discharge ratings have stimulated the development of more accurate and efficient gauging techniques such as nonintrusive photogrammetric techniques. Despite many successful applications of large-scale particle image velocimetry (LSPIV) for short-term measurements during flood events, there are still very few studies that address its use for long-term monitoring of small mountain rivers. To fill this gap, this study targets the development and testing of largely autonomous photogrammetric discharge measurement system with a special focus on the application to small mountain river with high discharge variability in the tropics. It proposes several enhancements concerning camera calibration, more efficient processing in image geometry, the automatic detection of the water level as well as the statistical calibration and estimation of the discharge from multiple profiles. A case study which comprises the analysis of several thousand videos spanning over 2.5 year is carried out to test the robustness and accuracy of different processing steps. Comparisons against classical current meter profiling show a mean absolute percentage error of 9.0% after the statistical calibration of the system. The study suggests that LSPIV can already be considered as a valuable tool for the monitoring of torrential flows, whereas further research is still needed to fully integrate nighttime observation and stereophotogrammetric capabilities.

Abstract

A significant issue for the transport refrigeration industry is its high use of non-renewable energy for both motion and refrigeration. With the goal of reducing the environmental footprint, this study is focused on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of Truck Refrigeration Units (TRU). Contrary to most studies about TRU, this study considers alternative impact categories, including energy consumption, refrigerant fluids and their associated impacts. The LCA reveals that the operation phase is a significant source of environmental impact, while the usage-scenario also has a high influence on the impact. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the weight of the transported product profile (frozen or fresh), type of transport (distribution or long haul) and the operating mode (continuous run, start/stop) on the environmental footprint of transport refrigeration. Finally, the LCA results highlight the necessity to consider the role of customer behavior on the environmental performance of transport refrigeration units.

Abstract

International audience; The mapping of landslides from Very High Resolution (VHR) satellite optical images present several challenges related to the heterogeneity of landslide sizes, shapes and ground surface properties. However, a common geomorphological characteristic of landslides is to be organized with a series of embedded and scaled features. These properties motivated the use of a multiresolution image analysis approach based on a hybrid segmentation/classification region-based method. The method, which uses satellite optical images of the same area at various spatial resolutions (Medium to Very High Resolution), relies on a top-down hierarchical framework. In the specific context of landslide analysis, two main novelties are introduced to enrich this framework. The first novelty consists of using non-spectral information, obtained from Digital Surface Model (DSM), as a priori knowledge for the guidance of the segmentation/classification process. The second novelty consists of using a new domain adaptation strategy, that allows to reduce the expert’s interaction when handling large image datasets. Experiments performed on satellite images acquired over terrains affected by landslides in ther French Alps demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method with different hierarchical levels of detail addressing various operational needs.

Abstract

Passive sensors such as multi-spectral (e.g., Single Lens Reflex, SLR) cameras are increasingly being used for geohazards monitoring (landslides, cliffs affected by rock falls, ice glaciers, and volcano flanks) because of their low cost compared to expensive terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) or radar imaging (GB-InSAR) systems. Indeed, due to the large consumer market, sensor resolution and quality (e.g., gain, dynamic range, and geometry) are increasing rapidly. For gravitational processes, such as landslides, recent research has focused on the development and implementation of image correlation techniques to estimate the spatial shift between at least a pair of images by maximizing a cross-correlation function. A generic and fully automated pipeline is proposed for the processing of long image time series acquired for several site configurations. The system associates modules for (1) the selection of the image sequences, (2) the registration of the image stacks and the correction of the camera movements, and (3) the calculation of the terrain motion using change detection approaches. The system is based on the open-source photogrammetric library MicMac and tailored for the processing of monoscopic images. A sensitivity analysis is conducted to design and test the image processing for two use cases respectively the Chambon landslide (Isère, France) characterized by slow motion (< 10 cm·day−1), and the Pas de l'Ours landslide (Hautes-Alpes, France) characterized by moderate motion (> 50 cm·day−1). Four categories of parameters are tested: the image modality, the image matching parameters, the size of the stable area used in the co-registration stage, and the strategy used to combine the images in the time series. The application of the pipeline on the two use cases provides information about the kinematics and the spatial behavior of the landslides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
