1. Probing phase transitions with correlations in configuration space

Abstract

In principle, the probability of configurations, determined by the system's partition function or wave function, encapsulates essential information about phases and phase transitions. Despite the exponentially large configuration space, we show that the generic correlation of distances between configurations, with a degree of freedom proportional to the lattice size, can probe phase transitions using importance sampling procedures like Monte Carlo simulations. The distribution of sampled distances varies significantly across different phases, suggesting universal critical behavior for uncertainty and participation entropy. For various classical spin models with different phases and transitions, finite-size analysis based on these quantities accurately identifies phase transitions and critical points. Notably, in all cases, the critical exponent derived from the uncertainty of distances equals the anomalous dimension governing real-space correlation decay. Thus, configuration space correlations, defined by distance uncertainties, share the same decay ratio as real-space correlations, determining the universality class of phase transitions. This work applies to diverse lattice models with different local degrees of freedom, e.g., two levels for Ising-like models, discrete multi-levels for q-state clock models, and continuous local levels for the XY model, offering a robust, alternative method for understanding complex phases and transitions., Comment: 17 figures, 15 pages

Abstract

We reinvestigate the phase transitions of the Ising model on the Kagome lattice with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions, which has a six-state-clock spin ice ground state and two consecutive Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transitions. Employing the classical Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, the phases are characterized by the magnetic order parameter, and the critical temperatures are obtained by the finite-size scaling of related physical quantities. Moreover, we attempt to gain general information on the phase transitions from the MC process instead of MC results and successfully extract the correct transition points with surprisingly high accuracy. Specifically, we focus on the selected data set of uncorrelated MC configurations and quantify the MC process using the distribution of two-configuration Hamming distances in this small data collection. This distribution is more than a quantity that features different behaviors in different phases but also nicely supports the same BKT scaling form as the order parameter, from which we successfully determine the two BKT transition points with surprisingly high accuracy. We also discuss the connection between the phase transitions and the intrinsic dimension extracted from the Hamming distances, which is widely used in the growing field of machine learning and is reported to be able to detect critical points. Our findings provide a new understanding of the spin ice transitions in the Kagome lattice and can hopefully be used similarly to identify transitions in the quantum system on the same lattice with strong frustrations., Comment: 12 figures

Abstract

Kawasaki disease (KD) is a form of acute systemic vasculitis syndrome that predominantly occurs in children under the age of 5 years. Its etiology has been postulated due to not only genetic factors but also the presence of foreign antigens or infectious agents. To evaluate possible associations between Kawasaki disease (KD) and COVID-19, we investigated humoral responses of KD patients against S-protein variants with SARS-CoV-2 variant protein microarrays. In this study, plasma from a cohort of KD (N = 90) and non-KD control (non-KD) (N = 69) subjects in categories of unvaccinated–uninfected (pre-pandemic), SARS-CoV-2 infected (10–100 days after infection), and 1-dose, 2-dose, and 3-dose BNT162b2 vaccinated (10–100 days after vaccination) was collected. The principal outcomes were non-KD–KD differences for each category in terms of anti-human/anti-His for binding antibodies and neutralizing percentage for surrogate neutralizing antibodies. Binding antibodies against spikes were lower in the KD subjects with 1-dose of BNT162b2, and mean differences were significant for the P.1 S-protein (non-KD–KD, 3401; 95% CI, 289.0 to 6512; P = 0.0252), B.1.617.2 S-protein (non-KD–KD, 4652; 95% CI, 215.8 to 9087; P = 0.0351) and B.1.617.3 S-protein (non-KD–KD, 4874; 95% CI, 31.41 to 9716; P = 0.0477). Neutralizing antibodies against spikes were higher in the KD subjects with 1-dose of BNT162b2, and mean percentage differences were significant for the 1-dose BNT162b2 B.1.617.3 S-protein (non-KD–KD, −22.89%; 95% CI, −45.08 to −0.6965; P = 0.0399), B.1.1.529 S-protein (non-KD–KD, −25.96%; 95% CI, −50.53 to −1.376; P = 0.0333), BA.2.12.1 S-protein (non-KD–KD, −27.83%; 95% CI, −52.55 to −3.115; P = 0.0195), BA.4 S-protein (non-KD–KD, −28.47%; 95% CI, −53.59 to −3.342; P = 0.0184), and BA.5 S-protein (non-KD–KD, −30.42%; 95% CI, −54.98 to −5.869; P = 0.0077). Abstract

The process of software changes is complex and constantly needed to be monitored, controlled and tracked by a systematic approach or mechanism. For the past decades, organizations invested great amount of effort, money and resources in quality management system (QMS) to ensure software change control management (SCCM) and business operations are consistent, reliable and meeting customers’ needs. As such, it is important for every project team member to comply and adhere to change control standards following best practices maximizing business advantages, enhancing product quality, improving process routines and increases performance earnings. A formalized SCCM without compliance from project team is equivalence to "procedure on paper". This paper discusses the need of joined effort from both project manager and technical team in view of organizational level achievement in software quality assurance. At the same time, this paper provides a general overview of how software change control is carried out in the context of IT Project Management. A step-by-step project activity within system development life cycle (SDLC) and project life cycle (PLC) is discussed in the paper.

21. CD44v6 overexpression related to metastasis and poor prognosis of colorectal cancer: A meta-analysis.

Abstract

CD44v6 has recently been reported as a biomarker for colorectal cancer. However, the clinical and prognostic significance of CD44v6 in colorectal cancer remains controversial. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to clarify this issue. A comprehensive literature search was performed using Medline, Embase and Web of Science, and the statistical analysis was conducted using Stata software. A total of twenty-one studies including 3918 colorectal cancer cases were included. The pooled analysis showed that CD44v6 overexpression in colorectal cancer was an independent prognostic marker correlating with lower 5-year overall survival rate (OR=0.78, 95%CI =0.67-0.91, p=0.001). CD44v6 overexpression was also associated with more lymph node invasion (OR=1.48, 95%CI= 1.02-2.15, p=0.04), and advanced Dukes stage (OR=2.47, 95%CI= 1.29-4.73, p=0.01). In addition, while excluding Zolbec's study, CD44v6 overexpression was associated with distance metastasis (OR=1.65, 95%CI =1.13-2.40, p=0.01). Taken together, this meta-analysis suggested that CD44v6 is an efficient prognostic factor in colorectal cancer.

Abstract

Aim: To evaluate diagnostic yields of capsule endoscopy (CE) and/or single-balloon enteroscopy (SBE) in patients with suspected small bowel diseases., Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 700 patients with suspected small bowel diseases from September 2010 to March 2016. CE, SBE, or SBE with prior CE was performed in 401, 353, and 47 patients, respectively. Data from clinical and endoscopy records were collected for analysis. Indications, procedure times, diagnostic yields, and complications were summarized and evaluated., Results: The overall diagnostic yield for the CE group was 57.6%. The diagnostic yield of CE in patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding (OGIB) was significantly greater than that in patients with no bleeding (70.5% vs 43.8%, P < 0.01). The overall diagnostic yield of SBE was 69.7%. There was no difference in the diagnostic yield of SBE between patients with OGIB and those with no bleeding (72.5% vs 68.9%, P = 0.534). Forty-seven patients underwent CE prior to SBE. Among them, the diagnostic yield of SBE with positive findings on prior CE was 93.3%. In addition, SBE detected two cases with superficial ulcer and erosive lesions in the small bowel, which were missed by CE. However, one case with lymphoma and two with Crohn's disease were not confirmed by SBE. The rate of capsule retention was 2.0%. There were no significant complications during or after SBE examinations., Conclusion: SBE is a safe and effective technique for diagnosing small bowel diseases.
