Studies have reported the emergence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) due to surgery. In fact, the usfige of long-shafted instruments has been suspected to induce WMSD in laparoscopic surgery. The present study therefore investigated whether differences in the range of motion of the face and neck, and the shoulder, elbow and hand on the dominant hand side, existed when using short- and long-shafted laparoscopic coagulation shears (LCS) during a gynecological laparoscopic surgery, based on images analyzed using artificial intelligence. After identifying the corresponding body parts in the video, the range of motion was illustrated graphically for each joint coordinate, followed by statistical analysis for changes in the position of each part. The range of motion for the face and neck did not significantly differ, whereas those for the shoulder, elbow and hand became noticeably broader when using the 36-cm long-shafted LCS than when using the 20-cm short-shafted LCS. Adult size in numerous insects is strongly dependent on temperature. In several cases, a temperature-size rule is observed in which developmental temperature and adult size tradeoff. Although several previous studies have demonstrated the temperature-size rule, only a few have explored the relationship between developmental temperature and weapon traits or sexual size dimorphism. This study was conducted to investigate the size of the broad-horned flour beetle Gnatocerus cornutus when it was developed under different temperatures. G. cornutus males possess weapon traits for male-male combat and exhibit sexual size dimorphism in other morphological traits. Results showed that male weapon size and body size complied with the temperature-size rule. Furthermore, the extent of sex dimorphism in genae width, a weapon-supportive trait, were larger at lower temperatures. Death feigning, a state of immobility observed in many animals in response to external stimuli, is an anti-predator behaviour. Although previous studies showed that death-feigning behaviours are quantitative genetic traits, the knowledge of the heritable basis of death-feigning behaviour is lacking. To investigate the heritable basis of death-feigning behaviour, we used 3 laboratory strains of a braconid parasitoid wasp, Heterospilus prosopidis. The heritable basis using half-sib analysis, and the effects of different geographical backgrounds, rearing conditions in the laboratory, and host age were evaluated. The results of the half-sib analysis showed that the frequency of death feigning varied among sires, suggesting a certain extent of additive genetic variance. Also, the frequency of death feigning varied between geographical backgrounds and among strains. Death-feigning frequency was not affected by the age of the host. Our findings highlight the importance of genetic factors underlying the basis of the death-feigning behaviour and provide support for the genetic alterations of traits from the perspective of evolution in various animal species., (© The Author(s) 2024. Movement is an important behavior observed in a wide range of taxa. Previous studies have examined genes controlling movement using wing polymorphic insects and genes controlling wing size. However, few studies have investigated genes controlling movement activity rather than morphological traits. In the present study, we conducted RNA sequencing using populations with higher (WL) and lower (WS) mobility established by artificial selection in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum and compared gene expression levels between selected populations with two replicate lines. As a result, we found significant differences between the selected populations in 677 genes expressed in one replicate line and 1198 genes expressed in another replicate line, of which 311 genes were common to the two replicate lines. Furthermore, quantitative PCR focusing on 6 of these genes revealed that neuropeptide F receptor gene (NpF) was significantly more highly expressed in the WL population than in the WS population, which was common to the two replicate lines. Laser-driven ion sources are a rapidly developing technology producing high energy, high peak current beams. Their suitability for applications, such as compact medical accelerators, motivates development of robust acceleration schemes using widely available repetitive ultraintense femtosecond lasers. These applications not only require high beam energy, but also place demanding requirements on the source stability and controllability. This can be seriously affected by the laser temporal contrast, precluding the replication of ion acceleration performance on independent laser systems with otherwise similar parameters. Here, we present the experimental generation of >60 MeV protons and >30 MeV u -1 carbon ions from sub-micrometre thickness Formvar foils irradiated with laser intensities >10 21 Wcm 2 . Ions are accelerated by an extreme localised space charge field ≳30 TVm -1 , over a million times higher than used in conventional accelerators. The field is formed by a rapid expulsion of electrons from the target bulk due to relativistically induced transparency, in which relativistic corrections to the refractive index enables laser transmission through normally opaque plasma. We replicate the mechanism on two different laser facilities and show that the optimum target thickness decreases with improved laser contrast due to reduced pre-expansion. Our demonstration that energetic ions can be accelerated by this mechanism at different contrast levels relaxes laser requirements and indicates interaction parameters for realising application-specific beam delivery., (© 2023. Death-feigning behaviour is a phenomenon in which a prey is rendered motionless due to stimulation or threat from a predator. This anti-predator defence mechanism has been observed across numerous animal taxa and is considered adaptive in nature. However, longer durations of death feigning can result in decreased opportunities for feeding and reproduction, and therefore is often associated with fitness costs as compared to environments without predators. Differences have also been observed in the frequencies and durations of death feigning within populations, and these differences are thought to be influenced by the balance between survival and other fitness costs. Furthermore, this balance is predicted to vary in response to changes in environmental conditions. In this study, we examined the death feigning in 38 populations of the red flour beetle ( Tribolium castaneum ). Our results demonstrate that frequencies and durations of the death feigning in T. castaneum show geographical variations and a latitude cline, indicating that this behaviour is influenced by location as well as latitude. This study is the first to demonstrate the existence of a latitudinal cline in death feigning and suggests that death-feigning behaviour might have evolved in response to environmental factors that vary with latitude.

Reciprocal crossing of different strains is a suitable method to investigate the dominance and inheritance of a focal trait. Herein, we performed reciprocal crossing among strains of Tribolium castaneum exhibiting a genetically high (H strain) and low (L strain) moving activity and investigated the related heritable factors in the F 1 and F 2 generations. We also evaluated death-feigning behavior, which negatively responded to artificial selection for moving activity in T. castaneum. The results obtained for the F 1 generation suggest that low moving activity and short duration of death feigning were dominant. In the F 2 generation, movement and death feigning exhibited continuous segregation. The distribution of each trait value in the F 2 generation differed from that in the parental generation, and no individuals transgressing the distribution of trait values in the parental generation emerged in the F 2 generation. These results suggest that the genetic correlation between movement and death-feigning behavior is controlled in a polygenic manner. Moreover, the examination of the proportions of both behaviors (high vs. low moving activity and long vs. short death-feigning duration) in the F 1 generation revealed that the two behaviors may be controlled by the maternal genotype, suggesting that the gene(s) that control movement and death feigning are located on the sex chromosome in T. castaneum., (© 2022. Background: This study aimed to clarify the frequency and clinical features of monogenic cerebral small vessel disease (mgCSVD) among patients with adult-onset severe CSVD in Japan., Methods: This study included patients with adult-onset severe CSVD with an age of onset ≤55 years (group 1) or >55 years and with a positive family history (group 2). After conducting conventional genetic tests for NOTCH3 and HTRA1 , whole-exome sequencing was performed on undiagnosed patients. Patients were divided into two groups according to the results of the genetic tests: monogenic and undetermined. The clinical and imaging features were compared between the two groups., Results: Group 1 and group 2 included 75 and 31 patients, respectively. In total, 30 patients had NOTCH3 mutations, 11 patients had HTRA1 mutations, 6 patients had ABCC6 mutations, 1 patient had a TREX1 mutation, 1 patient had a COL4A1 mutation and 1 patient had a COL4A2 mutation. The total frequency of mutations in NOTCH3 , HTRA1 and ABCC6 was 94.0% in patients with mgCSVD. In group 1, the frequency of a family history of first relatives, hypertension and multiple lacunar infarctions (LIs) differed significantly between the two groups (monogenic vs undetermined; family history of first relatives, 61.0% vs 25.0%, p=0.0015; hypertension, 34.1% vs 63.9%, p=0.0092; multiple LIs, 87.8% vs 63.9%, p=0.0134)., Conclusions: More than 90% of mgCSVDs were diagnosed by screening for NOTCH3 , HTRA1 and ABCC6 . Death-feigning behavior is an anti-predatory technique used in several animal taxa and often correlates with inhibited movements (i.e., death-feigning syndrome). We performed a reciprocal crossing among strains exhibiting a genetically longer (L-strain) and shorter (S-strain) duration of death feigning. Then, we investigated related heritable factors in F 1 and F 2 populations. We also evaluated movement activities, which negatively responded to artificial selection for death feigning in T. castaneum. Our results indicated that death feigning occurred more frequently and for shorter periods in the F 1 population. However, in the F 2 population, death feigning and movement exhibited continuous segregation. Although the distribution of each trait value in the F 2 generation differed from that of the parental generation, no individuals transgressing the distribution of trait values in the parental generation emerged from the F 2 generation. Besides, chi-square analysis of the observed death feigning and movement of F 1 and F 2 progenies rejected the hypothesis of mono-major gene inheritance. Whole-organism performance, including locomotor activity, is an important fitness trait in many animals. Locomotor activity is often classified into sprint speed and locomotor endurance and differences in sprint speed and locomotor endurance affect on other traits such as life-history traits. Previous studies found that locomotor endurance, sprint speed and brain dopamine (DA) levels are correlated with artificial selection for death feigning (an anti-predator behaviour that we refer to as 'death-feigning syndrome') in some insect species. Thus, if the syndrome has a genetic basis, death feigning, sprint speed and brain DA levels may be affected by artificial selection for locomotor endurance. We artificially selected for locomotor endurance over 10 generations in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum, and established higher (H) and lower activity (L) strains, then compared their death-feigning behaviour, sprint speed and brain DA levels. H-strain beetles exhibited significantly shorter duration of death-feigning, and significantly higher sprint speeds, suggesting variation in death-feigning syndrome. Surprisingly, although brain DA expression affects various animal behaviours, we found no significant differences in the brain DA expressions of H- and L-strain beetles. Thus, our results imply genetic correlations between locomotor endurance, sprint speed and death feigning, but not with brain DA expression, suggesting that differences in the biogenic amine results of our and previous studies may reflect differences in behavioural expression mechanisms., (© 2022 European Society for Evolutionary Biology.)

Prey evolve antipredator strategies against multiple enemies in nature. We examined how a prey species adopts different predation avoidance tactics against pursuit or sit-and-wait predators. As prey, we used three strains of Tribolium beetles artificially selected for short (short strain) or long (long strain) duration of death feigning, and a stock culture (base population). Death feigning is known to be effective for evading a jumping spider in the case of the long strains, while the present study showed that the long-strain beetles used freezing against a sit-and-wait type predator, Amphibolus venator , in this study. The short- strain beetles were more easily oriented toward predators. The time to predation was also shorter in the short strains compared to the long strains. The results showed that, as prey, the short strains displayed the same behavior, escaping, against both types of predators. Traditionally, death feigning has been thought to be the last resort in a series of antipredator avoidance behaviors. However, our results showed that freezing and death feigning were not parts of a series of behaviors, but independent strategies against different predators, at least for long-strain beetles. We also examined the relationship between a predator's starvation level and its predatory behavior. Predator avoidance is an important behavior that affects the degree of adaptation of organisms. We compared the DNA variation of one of the predator-avoidance behaviors, the recently extensively studied "death-feigning behavior", between the long strain bred for feigning death for a long time and the short strain bred for feigning death for a short time. To clarify how the difference in DNA sequences between the long and short strains corresponds to the physiological characteristics of the death-feigning duration at the transcriptome level, we performed comprehensive and comparative analyses of gene variants in Tribolium castaneum strains using DNA-resequencing. The duration of death feigning involves many gene pathways, including caffeine metabolism, tyrosine metabolism, tryptophan metabolism, metabolism of xenobiotics by cytochrome P450, longevity regulating pathways, and circadian rhythm. Artificial selection based on the duration of death feigning results in the preservation of variants of genes in these pathways in the long strain. Since the variables inherent to various diseases cannot be controlled directly in humans, behavioral dysfunctions have been examined in model organisms, leading to better understanding their underlying mechanisms. However, because the spatial and temporal scales of animal locomotion vary widely among species, conventional statistical analyses cannot be used to discover knowledge from the locomotion data. We propose a procedure to automatically discover locomotion features shared among animal species by means of domain-adversarial deep neural networks. Our neural network is equipped with a function which explains the meaning of segments of locomotion where the cross-species features are hidden by incorporating an attention mechanism into the neural network, regarded as a black box. It enables us to formulate a human-interpretable rule about the cross-species locomotion feature and validate it using statistical tests. We demonstrate the versatility of this procedure by identifying locomotion features shared across different species with dopamine deficiency, namely humans, mice, and worms, despite their evolutionary differences., (© 2021. In Japan, the age-adjusted incidence of cervical cancer has been increasing constantly and rapidly among younger women. We set out to accurately confirm the effectiveness of the HPV vaccine in Japan. Data were collected for women born in the fiscal year (FY) 1990 to 1997, who became eligible for their 20-y-old cervical cancer screening between the FY 2010 to 2017. The adjusted incidence of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN)1+ in women born in FY 1990 to 1993, that is those who reached the national vaccination target age prior to the introduction of publicly subsidized HPV vaccinations, referred here after as "the pre-introduction generation", was 1.42% (242/17 040). The incidence in the "vaccination generation" (women born in FY 1994 to 1997, that is those who were heavily vaccinated as a group when they were of the nationally targeted age of 13-16) was 1.66% (135/8020). There was no significant difference between these incidence rates. However, our FY birth year-by-year analysis revealed that the incidence of CIN1+ was obviously lower than that predicted based on just the trend for CIN1+ seen in the pre-introduction generation. Our analysis revealed that the incidence of CIN3+ was obviously lower in the vaccination generation than in the pre-introduction generation (P = .0008). The incidence of CIN was already tending to increase in both the pre-introduction and vaccination generations. Bet-hedging via polyandry (spreading the extinction risk of the female's lineage over multiple males) may explain the evolution of female multiple mating, which is found in a wide range of animal and plant taxa. This hypothesis posits that females can increase their fitness via polyandrous mating when "unsuitable" males (i.e., males causing reproductive failure for various reasons) are frequent in the population and females cannot discriminate such unsuitable mates. Although recent theoretical studies have shown that polyandry can operate as a bet-hedging strategy, empirical tests are scarce. In the present study, we tested the bet-hedging polyandry hypothesis by using the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum . We compared female reproductive success between monandry and polyandry treatments when females mated with males randomly collected from an experimental population, including 20% irradiated (infertile) males. In addition, we evaluated geometric mean fitness across multiple generations as the index of adaptability of bet-hedging traits. Polyandrous females showed a significantly higher egg hatching rate and higher geometric mean fitness than monandrous females. This paper reports on the absolute response of a Fuji BAS-TR image plate to relatively low-energy protons (<0.2 MeV) and carbon ions (<1 MeV) accelerated by a 10-TW-class compact high-intensity laser system. A Thomson parabola spectrometer was used to discriminate between different ion species while dispersing the ions according to their kinetic energy. Ion parabolic traces were recorded using an image plate detector overlaid with a slotted CR-39 solid-state detector. The obtained response function for the protons was reasonably extrapolated from previously reported higher-ion-energy response functions. Conversely, the obtained response function for carbon ions was one order of magnitude higher than the value extrapolated from previously reported higher-ion-energy response functions. In a previous study, it was determined that if the stopping range of carbon ions is comparable to or smaller than the grain size of the phosphor, then some ions will provide all their energy to the binder resin rather than the phosphor. As a result, it is believed that the imaging plate response will be reduced. Our results show good agreement with the empirical formula of Lelasseux et al., which does not consider photo-stimulated luminescence (PSL) reduction due to the urethane resin. It was shown that the PSL reduction due to the deactivation of the urethane resin is smaller than that previously predicted.

Many species show rhythmicity in activity, from the timing of flowering in plants to that of foraging behavior in animals. The free-running periods and amplitude (sometimes called strength or power) of circadian rhythms are often used as indicators of biological clocks. Many reports have shown that these traits are highly geographically variable, and interestingly, they often show latitudinal or longitudinal clines. In many cases, the higher the latitude is, the longer the free-running circadian period (i.e., period of rhythm) in insects and plants. However, reports of positive correlations between latitude or longitude and circadian rhythm traits, including free-running periods, the power of the rhythm and locomotor activity, are limited to certain taxonomic groups. Therefore, we collected a cosmopolitan stored-product pest species, the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum, in various parts of Japan and examined its rhythm traits, including the power and period of the rhythm, which were calculated from locomotor activity. The analysis revealed that the power was significantly lower for beetles collected in northern areas than southern areas in Japan. However, it is worth noting that the period of circadian rhythm did not show any clines; specifically, it did not vary among the sampling sites, despite the very large sample size (n = 1585). Tonic immobility and escape are adaptive anti-predator tactics used by many animals. Escape requires movement, whereas tonic immobility does not. If anti-predator tactics relate to weapon size, males with larger weapons may adopt tonic immobility, whereas males with smaller weapons may adopt escape. However, no study has investigated the relationship between weapon size and anti-predator tactics. In this study, we investigated the relationship between male weapon size and tonic immobility in the beetle Gnathocerus cornutus . The results showed that tonic immobility was more frequent in males with larger weapons. Although most studies of tonic immobility in beetles have focused on the duration, rather than the frequency, tonic immobility duration was not affected by weapon size in G . cornutus . Therefore, this study is the first, to our knowledge, to suggest that the male weapon trait affects anti-predator tactics.

A comparative analysis of animal behavior (e.g., male vs. female groups) has been widely used to elucidate behavior specific to one group since pre-Darwinian times. However, big data generated by new sensing technologies, e.g., GPS, makes it difficult for them to contrast group differences manually. This study introduces DeepHL, a deep learning-assisted platform for the comparative analysis of animal movement data, i.e., trajectories. This software uses a deep neural network based on an attention mechanism to automatically detect segments in trajectories that are characteristic of one group. It then highlights these segments in visualized trajectories, enabling biologists to focus on these segments, and helps them reveal the underlying meaning of the highlighted segments to facilitate formulating new hypotheses. We tested the platform on a variety of trajectories of worms, insects, mice, bears, and seabirds across a scale from millimeters to hundreds of kilometers, revealing new movement features of these animals.

The trend for cervical cancer in younger women has been increasing recently in Japan. However, as a result of the suspension of governmental recommendation, Japan's HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccination rate for girls born since 2000 has dropped sharply. We conducted an internet survey in December of 2019, 76 months after the suspension of recommendation, to verify the intention of mothers to inoculate their daughter under current circumstances and compared with our previous surveys and leaflet intervention effect. The rates of mothers who replied that they would "inoculate" were significantly higher at 9 and 23 months, but by 32 months after the suspension the rate was significantly lower ( p < 0.05, p < 0.05, p < 0.05, respectively). The rates of the mothers who replied they would not inoculate were significantly lower at 9 months and 23 months, but at 76 months was significantly higher ( p < 0.05, p < 0.05, p < 0.05, respectively). We found that intervention with a leaflet that could be used under the current suspension of the governmental recommendation did not increase the mothers' intention to inoculate their daughters. A leaflet that actively encourages vaccination may increase the intent of vaccination. It is strongly recommended that the MHLW promptly resume its recommendations for HPV vaccination.

We have developed a novel discrimination methodology to identify ions in multispecies beams with similar charge-to-mass ratios, but different atomic numbers. After an initial separation by charge-to-mass ratios using co-linear electric and magnetic fields, individual ions can be discriminated by considering the linear energy transfer of ions irradiating a stimulable phosphor plate (Fujifilm imaging plate) by comparison with the Monte Carlo calculation. We apply the method to energetic multispecies laser-driven ion beams and use it to identify silver ions produced by the interaction between a high contrast, high intensity laser pulse; and a sub-micrometer silver foil target. We also show that this method can be used to calibrate the imaging plate for arbitrary ion species in the range of Z ≥ 6 with dE/dx > 0.1 MeV/μm without requiring individual calibration.

Death feigning is considered to be an adaptive antipredator behaviour. Previous studies on Tribolium castaneum have shown that prey which death feign have a fitness advantage over those that do not when using a jumping spider as the predator. Whether these effects are repeatable across species or whether they can be seen in nature is, however, unknown. Therefore, the present study involved two experiments: (a) divergent artificial selection for the duration of death feigning using a related species T. freemani as prey and a predatory bug as predator, demonstrating that previous results are repeatable across both prey and predator species, and (b) comparison of the death-feigning duration of T. castaneum populations collected from field sites with and without predatory bugs. In the first experiment, T. freemani adults from established selection regimes with longer durations of death feigning had higher survival rates and longer latency to being preyed on when they were placed with predatory bugs than the adults from regimes selected for shorter durations of death feigning. As a result, the adaptive significance of death-feigning behaviour was demonstrated in another prey-predator system. In the second experiment, wild T. castaneum beetles from populations with predators feigned death longer than wild beetles from predator-free populations. Introduction: The HPV vaccination rate in Japan has been dismally low. Our previous survey work found that mothers in Japan, who have a strong influence over their daughters, often are receptive to the fathers' participation in the family's decision-making process about getting their daughter HPV vaccinated., Methods: We conducted a survey to investigate the nature of the influence of fathers' participation on the mother's decision-making process. From an internet survey panel, we selected a pool of 1,499 eligible mothers who had 12-18 years old daughters. The mothers were randomized into three Groups. To the mothers in Group A, we gave an educational leaflet regarding HPV vaccination and a second leaflet which recommended that they talk with their husbands about the vaccination. To Group B, we gave only the educational leaflet. No leaflets were sent to Group C. A structured survey questionnaire was then distributed through the internet to the mothers., Results: In Groups A, B, and C, their intention to have their daughter receive the HPV vaccine was 21.6%, 20.7% and 8.2%, respectively. The percent of Group A mothers who thought their husband's opinion was important for when they made the decision was significantly higher (70%) than in Group B (56.6%) or Group C (47.1%)., Conclusions: The fathers' participation in the mothers' decision-making does not increase the likelihood of HPV vaccination for their daughters. On the other hand, the educational leaflet proved to be effective for this cause.

Retrieving the spectrum of physical radiation from experimental measurements typically involves using a mathematical algorithm to deconvolve the instrument response function from the measured signal. However, in the field of signal processing known as "Source Separation" (SS), which refers to the process of computationally retrieving the separate source components that generate an overlapping signal on the detector, the deconvolution process can become an ill-posed problem and crosstalk complicates the separation of the individual sources. To overcome this problem, we have designed a magnetic spectrometer for inline electron energy spectrum diagnosis and developed an analysis algorithm using techniques applicable to the problem of SS. An unknown polychromatic electron spectrum is calculated by sparse coding using a Gaussian basis function and an L1 regularization algorithm with a sparsity constraint. This technique is verified by using a specially designed magnetic field electron spectrometer. We use Monte Carlo simulations of the detector response to Maxwellian input energy distributions with electron temperatures of 5.0 MeV, 10.0 MeV, and 15.0 MeV to show that the calculated sparse spectrum can reproduce the input spectrum with an optimum energy bin width automatically selected by the L1 regularization. The spectra are reproduced with a high accuracy of less than 4.0% error, without an initial value. The technique is then applied to experimental measurements of intense laser accelerated electron beams from solid targets. Our analysis concept of spectral retrieval and automatic optimization of energy bin width by sparse coding could form the basis of a novel diagnostic method for spectroscopy.

The molecular basis of death feigning, an antipredator behavior that has received much attention recently, was analyzed. We compared the gene expression profiles of strains with different behaviors, i.e., different durations of death feigning, in the beetle Tribolium castaneum. Beetles artificially selected for short (S) and long (L) durations of death feigning for many generations were compared thoroughly by RNA sequencing. We identified 518 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the strains. The strains also showed divergence in unexpected gene expression regions. As expected from previous physiological studies, genes associated with the metabolic pathways of tyrosine, a precursor of dopamine, were differentially expressed between the S and L strains; these enzyme-encoding genes were expressed at higher levels in the L strain than in the S strain. We also found that several genes associated with insulin signaling were expressed at higher levels in the S strain than in the L strain. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis showed that the relative expression levels of Tchpd (encoding 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase, Hpd) and Tcnat (encoding N-acetyltransferase, Nat) were significantly higher in the L strain than in the S strain, suggesting the influence of these enzymes on the supply of dopamine and duration of death feigning.

Tonic immobility (TI) is an effective anti-predator strategy. However, long immobility status on the ground increases the risk of being eaten by predators, and thus insects must rouse themselves when appropriate stimulation is provided. Here, the strength of vibration causing arousal from the state of TI was examined in strains artificially selected for longer duration of TI (L-strains: long sleeper) in a beetle. We provided different strengths of vibration stimuli to the long sleepers in Tribolium castaneum. Although immobilized beetles were never awakened by the stimuli from 0.01 to 0.12 mm in amplitude, almost of the beetles were aroused from immobilized status by the stimulus at 0.21 mm. There was a difference in sensitivity of individuals when the stimuli of 0.14 mm and 0.18 mm were provided. F2 individuals were also bred by crossing experiments of the strains selected for shorter and longer duration of TI. The arousal sensitivity to vibration was well separated in the F2 individuals. A positive relationship was observed between the duration of TI and the vibration amplitude, suggesting that immobilized beetles are difficult to arouse from a deep sleep, while light sleepers are easily aroused by even small vibrations. The results indicate a genetic basis for sensitivity to arousal from TI.

FreeStyle Libre (flash glucose monitoring) is useful to control the blood sugar levels of outpatients with diabetes. We used FreeStyle Libre for a patient with type 1 diabetes mellitus during the perioperative period of cardiac surgery except during and just after surgery. We adjusted the insulin amount according to the glucose level of the device before surgery and prevented prolonged hypoglycemia. After surgery, we could also adjust the blood sugar levels using the device until discharge. All data were within zones A and B of the Clarke error grid analysis when referred to as arterial blood sugar levels in the intensive care unit. In the general ward after surgery, 95% of the data referred to as venous blood sugar levels were within zones A and B. FreeStyle Libre was useful for adjusting the amount of insulin for a patient with type 1 diabetes mellitus during the perioperative period of cardiac surgery in the ward and also might be useful for decreasing the frequency of arterial blood collection in the intensive care unit.

Controlling the supramolecular organization of pigment molecules will provide innovative materials that exhibit variable optical properties. In nature, photosynthetic systems employ chlorophyllous supramolecules in which each pigment molecule is suitably organized in proteins, and their properties are adequately optimized by changing the structures of the surrounding amino acid residues. Here, we report a strategy for varying the aggregation behavior of a chlorophyll derivative by using a phase-transition phenomenon of lipid bilayers. Methyl pyropheophorbide a (MPP) was employed as a chlorophyllous pigment in our artificial system, and synthetic phosphatidylcholines with saturated acyl chain(s) were also used. The MPP molecules successfully accumulated within the lipid bilayer of liposomes without changing the vesicular structure. When the lipid bilayer was in a gel form (under the phase-transition temperature, T m ), the embedded MPP aggregated to yield a dimeric form showing red-shifted absorption bands and circular dichroism signals. When the solutions of MPP-containing liposomes were heated to higher temperatures than their T m , MPP disaggregated to monomeric form as the absorption spectrum changed into its original fashion in dichloromethane. The reversible thermochromic (dis)aggregation of the MPP molecules had good cyclability. Additional careful examination of the phase transition in the MPP-lipid co-assemblies clarified that the critical temperatures of the MPP (dis)aggregation were in good agreement with the phase-transition temperatures of the pigment-containing bilayers. The reversible MPP aggregation in the lipid bilayers occurred in a wide range of temperatures (around 10-55 °C) by changing the length of the diacyl side chains of phospholipids. The reversible thermochromism of the chlorophyllous system was established by varying the nature of the surrounding lipid bilayer. This study can provide a useful strategy for making variable tetrapyrrolic aggregate systems induced by mild extrinsic stimuli.

An octogenarian female patient underwent implantation of pacemaker for sick sinus syndrome. Seventeen days after implantation, she came back to our hospital with pain and redness of the skin around the pacemaker generator. It was difficult to differentiate the infection from a subcutaneous hemorrhage. She did not have high fever. The blood test showed only a slight elevation of C-reactive protein(CRP). Cefazolin was administered after readmission. Five days after readmission, the report of the blood culture showed nontuberculous Mycobacterium positive. We immediately removed the generator and the leads completely. Antibiotics were changed to clarithromycin and ciprofloxacin. The culture reports of blood, generator, leads, and subcutaneous tissue were first Mycobacterium peregrinum( M. peregrinum) but was later corrected to be Mycobacterium mageritense (M. mageritense). Twenty-seven days after the removal of the device, she was transferred to another hospital near her family and antibiotics were ceased due to allergic reaction the day after transfer. Ten days after transfer, a new device was implanted, and she does not have any signs of infection now. The possibility of mycobacterial infection, including nontuberculous mycobacterial infection, should be considered for device contamination, especially for the aging population, and quick and proper treatments are required.

In many animals, movement often affects fitness components such as foraging or migration. On the other hand, individuals with higher mobility also often have fitness costs. This trade-off between movement and other traits may explain the maintenance of variation in moving ability in a population. However, few studies have focused on movement by walking, although many previous studies of insects have investigated the evolution of variations in mobility with wing polymorphism. In this study, we focused on the walking ability of the red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum) and investigated whether females with higher than lower walking ability have fitness costs. The present results showed that females with genetically higher walking ability produced smaller eggs and had lower starvation resistance than females with lower walking ability. These results suggest that higher walking ability is costly for females, and this fitness cost may explain maintenance of variations of walking ability in a population., (© 2018 European Society For Evolutionary Biology. Ultrafast vibronic dynamics induced by the interaction of the Frenkel exciton with the coherent molecular vibrations in a layer-structured zinc chlorin aggregates prepared for artificial photosynthesis have been studied by 7.1 fs real-time vibrational spectroscopy with multi-spectrum detection. The fast decay of 100 ± 5fs is ascribed to the relaxation from the higher multi-exciton state (MES) to the one-exciton state, and the slow one of 863 ± 70fs is assigned to the relaxation from Q-exciton state to the dark nonfluorescent charge-transfer (CT) state, respectively. In addition, the wavelength dependences of the exciton-vibration coupling strength are found to follow the zeroth derivative of the transient absorption spectra of the exciton. It could be explained in term of the transition dipole moment modulated by dynamic intensity borrowing between the B transition and the Q transition through the vibronic interactions.

Although it is clear that walking over different irregular terrain is associated with altered biomechanics, there is little understanding of how we quickly adapt to unexpected variations in terrain. This study aims to investigate which adaptive strategies humans adopt when performing an unanticipated step on an irregular surface, specifically a small bump. Nine healthy male participants walked at their preferred walking speed along a straight walkway during five conditions: four involving unanticipated bumps of two different heights, and one level walking condition. Muscle activation of eight lower limb muscles and three-dimensional gait analysis were evaluated during these testing conditions. Two distinct adaptive strategies were found, which involved no significant change in total lower limb mechanical work or walking speed. An ankle-based strategy was adopted when stepping on a bump with the forefoot, whereas a hip-based strategy was preferred when stepping with the rearfoot. These strategies were driven by a higher activation of the plantarflexor muscles (6-51%), which generated a higher ankle joint moment during the forefoot conditions and by a higher activation of the quadriceps muscles (36-93%), which produced a higher knee joint moment and hip joint power during the rearfoot conditions. These findings provide insights into how humans quickly react to unexpected events and could be used to inform the design of adaptive controllers for wearable robots intended for use in unstructured environments that can provide optimal assistance to the different lower limb joints., Competing Interests: Competing interestsThe authors declare no competing or financial interests., (© 2017. Two species, the cigarette beetle Lasioderma serricorne (F.) and the drugstore beetle Stegobium paniceum (L.), are particularly important stored-product pests because they damage dry food. A previous study showed that L. serricorne adults are attracted more to ultraviolet (UV) and blue light wave ranges more than others such as turquoise, green, yellow, red, and warm white. However, the previous study did not equalize the amounts of light. The study also evaluated the attractiveness by the numbers of L. serricorne individuals that were lured to LED lights in a small box in the laboratory. In some storehouses, damage by S. paniceum is more serious and establishment of an effective monitoring tool is required. Therefore, in the present study, attractions of these beetles to UV and blue light traps were compared to develop a tool to monitor the beetle pests. First, adult L. serricorne and S. paniceum beetles were provided with UV- and blue-LED panels whose light intensities were equalized in the laboratory, and the walking and flying paths of each adult were recorded and measured. As a result, adults were clearly attracted to the side of UV-LED panel by walking compared to the blue one. Second, we compared the numbers of cigarette beetles collected by sticky sheets that were set in the back of UV or blue-light LED traps in a real storehouse. The results showed that these beetles were significantly more attracted to UV than blue-light LED traps, indicating the UV-LED trap is a powerful tool to monitor these two pest species., (© The Authors 2017. Many animal behaviors have a genetic base, and behavioral traits often correlate with one another. In this study, we tested for a behavioral correlation between tonic immobility and walking distance in the larval and adult stages independently of two holometabolous insects. We confirmed a negative correlation of traits between strains in adults of both the species; however, we did not find it in larvae of either species. This suggests that the negative correlation between tonic immobility and walking is decoupled across life stages from larva to adult. In contrast, previous studies have reported that phenotypic correlations between behavioral traits are maintained from larvae to adults in hemimetabolous insects. In addition, our present results differ from previous results with holometabolous insects. Therefore, our results suggest that metamorphosis can change trade-offs between behavioral traits.

Previous studies showed that the survival rate of Wolbachia decreases under high temperature in incubators. It is also known that a high density of Wolbachia in the host body reduces the host emergence rate, while low densities fail to change reproduction rates. However, few studies have examined the density of Wolbachia in hosts in the field. Here, we focus on Wolbachia infection of the pale grass blue butterfly, Zizeeria maha (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae), which is distributed throughout the Japanese islands. We examined the rate and density of Wolbachia infection in the bodies of butterflies at thirteen locations in Japan. At seven of these places, we collected butterflies in different seasons to determine seasonal differences in the infection rate and density and found that Wolbachia density has seasonal differences within the same population. Moreover, to determine whether Wolbachia density has a geographical cline, we compared the infection density of Wolbachia amongst all geographical populations. In addition, we determined the sequences of Wolbachia wsp and host mtDNA CO1 haplotypes of all populations. The results showed that Wolbachia density increased in early summer and decreased in autumn. Further, the density of Wolbachia infecting the same strain of Z. maha varied amongst populations, although no tendency in geographical cline was observed.

The cigarette beetle, Lasioderma serricorne (F.), is an important stored-product pest worldwide because it damages dry foods. Detection and removal of the female L. serricorne will help to facilitate the control of the insect by removal of the egg-laying populations. In this manuscript, we examined the responses by L. serricorne to direct and reflected light in transparent cube (50 m3) set in a chamber (200 m3) and a stored facility with both direct and reflected UV-LED lights. The study also examined the responses by the beetles to light in the presence or absence of pheromone in traps that are placed at different heights. Reflected light attracted more beetles than the direct light in the experimental chamber, but the direct light traps attracted more beetles than the reflected light traps in the storehouse. Pheromone traps attracted only males; UV-LED traps attracted both sexes. The UV-LED traps with a pheromone, i.e., combined trap, attracted more males than UV-LED light traps without a pheromone, whereas the attraction of UV-LED traps with and without the pheromone was similar in females. The results suggest that UV-LED light trap combined with a sex pheromone is the best solution for monitoring and controlling L. serricorne., (© The Authors 2016. Cypermethrin resistance and reproductive types were examined for T. tabaci strains. Some arrhenotokous and thelytokous strains encoded the sodium channel mutation (T929I) involved in cypermethrin resistance. However, the resistance levels varied to some degree among the strains. A cytochrome P450 inhibitor, piperonyl butoxide, showed different synergistic effects on the strains examined. These results suggest that fundamental and additional levels of cypermethrin resistance in T. tabaci are conferred respectively by reduced sensitivity of the sodium channel and by cytochrome P450-mediated detoxification.

Brainstem/cerebellar infarction is known to cause various cranial nerve symptoms that may require otorhinolaryngological evaluation. Acute-phase cerebellar infarction is evaluated by MRI with diffusion-weighted imaging (MRI-DWI). However, in the acute phase, MRI-DWI may show false-negative results, because of which patients are referred to the department of otolaryngology for further evaluation of the cranial nerve symptoms. We investigated 250 cases of brainstem/cerebellar infarction in 245 patients who were admitted to our hospital between 2010 and 2015. Of the 250 cases, eight cases were diagnosed at the department of otolaryngology after detailed evaluators for dizziness or dysphagia, and three of them were false negative on initial MRI-DWI. In total, we examined 16 cases detected as false negatives upon initial MRI-DWI. Of the 16 cases, 12 were brainstem infarctions, three were cerebellar infarctions, and one was infarction of the brainstem and cerebellum. All 16 cases were evaluated by initial MRI-DWI within 12 h of onset. Careful observation of the neurological findings and follow-up MRI-DWI are useful for the detailed evaluation of patients suspected to have a cerebellar infarction.

Quantum coherences between excitonic states are believed to have a substantial impact on excitation energy transfer in photosynthetic systems. Here, the excitonic and vibrational coherence relaxation dynamics of artificially synthetic chlorosomes are studied by a sub 7 fs negative-time-delay laser spectroscopy at room temperature. The results provide direct evidence for the quantum coherence of the excitonic dephasing time of 23 ± 1 fs at physiologically relevant temperatures, which is significant in the initial step of energy transfer in chlorosome or chlorosome-like photosynthetic systems. Meanwhile, coherent molecular vibrations in the excited state are also detected without the effect of wave-packet motion in the ground state, which shows that the excited state wave-packet motion contributes greatly to the vibrational modes of ∼150 and ∼1340 cm(-1) in artificial chlorosome systems.
