An algebraic type of structure is shown forth which is such that if it is a characteristic matrix for a logic, then that logic satisfies Meyer's weak variable sharing property. As a corollary, it is shown that RM and all its odd-valued extensions \(\mathbf{RM}_{2n\mathord{-}1}\) satisfy the weak variable sharing property. It is also shown that a proof to the effect that the "fuzzy" version of the relevant logic R satisfies the property is incorrect.

Abstract Background The outcome of non-surgical treatment is generally good, but the treatment course can be long and painful with approximately a quarter of the patients acquiring a nonunion. Both surgical and non-surgical treatment can have disabling consequences such as nerve injury, infection, and nonunion. The purpose of the study is to compare patient-reported outcomes after surgical and non-surgical treatment for humeral shaft fractures. Methods A pragmatic randomized controlled trial (RCT) is planned with two study groups (SHAFT-Young and SHAFT-Elderly). A total of 287 eligible acute humeral shaft fractures are scheduled to be recruited and randomly allocated to surgical or non-surgical treatment with the option of early crossover due to delayed union. The surgical method within the allocation is decided by the surgeon. The primary outcome is the Disability of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) score at 52 weeks, and is assessor blinded. The secondary outcomes are DASH score, EQ-5D-5L, pain assessed by visual analog score, Constant-Murley score including elbow range of motion, and anchor questions collected at all timepoints throughout the trial. All complications will be reported including; infection, nerve or vascular injury, surgical revisions (implant malpositioning, hardware failure, aseptic loosening, and peri-implant fracture), major adverse cardiovascular events, and mortality. Discussion The SHAFT trial is a pragmatic multicenter RCT, that will compare the effectiveness of the main strategies in humeral shaft fracture treatment. This will include a variety of fracture morphologies, while taking the dilemmas within the population into account by splitting the population by age and providing the orthopedic society with an interval for early crossover surgery. Abstract Background Angular stable plates were introduced two decades ago as a promising treatment for fixation of displaced fractures of the proximal humerus (PHF). However, high rates of adverse events and reoperations have been reported. One frequent reason is secondary penetration of screws into the glenohumeral joint, due to sinking of the fracture or avascular head necrosis. To prevent joint penetrations angular stable plates with smooth locking pegs instead of locking screws have been developed. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether blunt pegs instead of pointed screws reduced the risk of secondary penetration into the glenohumeral joint during fracture healing after operatively treated PHFs. Methods From two different patient cohorts with displaced PHFs (60 treated with PHILOS plate with screws and 50 with ALPS-PHP plate with pegs), two groups were matched according to fracture type AO/OTA 11-B2 and 11-C2 and age (55–85 years). They were followed up at 3, 6 and 12 months. Primary outcome was radiographic signs of peg or screw penetrations into the glenohumeral joint at 12 months. Secondary outcomes were Oxford shoulder score (OSS) and Constant Score (CS) and radiographic signs of avascular humeral head necrosis (AVN). Results Eighteen PHILOS patients with B2 and C2 fractures could be matched with a corresponding group of 18 operated with ALPS-PHP with pegs. The number of penetrations of pegs and screws were equal between the two groups and the development of avascular head necrosis did not differ either. The functional outcomes for both OSS and CS at 12 months was clearly in favor of patients without joint penetrations in both groups. Conclusion We found no differences in the number of screw or peg penetrations in the PHILOS and ALPS-PHP group and the occurrence of AVN was equal. Joint penetrations led to inferior functional outcomes at 1 year. Background and purpose — Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) is used for treating cuff arthropathy, displaced proximal humeral fractures (PHF), and in revision shoulder surgery, despite sparse evidence on long-term results. We assessed stability of the glenoid component in reverse TSA, using model-based RSA. Patients and methods — 20 patients (mean age 76 years, 17 female), operated on with reverse TSA at Oslo University Hospital, in 2015–2017 were included. Indications for surgeries were PHFs, malunion, cuff arthropathy, and chronic shoulder dislocation. RSA markers were placed in the scapular neck, the coracoid, and the acromion. RSA radiographs were conducted postoperatively, at 3 months, 1 year, and 2 years. RSA analysis was performed using RSAcore with Reversed Engineering (RE) modality, with clinical precision < 0.25 mm for all translations (x, y, z) and < 0.7° for rotations (x, z). Scapular “notching” was assessed in conventional radiographs. Results — 1 patient was excluded due to revision surgery. More than half of the patients displayed measurable migration at 2 years: 6 patients with linear translations below 1 mm and 8 patients who showed rotational migration. Except for one outlier, the measured rotations were below 2°. The migration pattern suggested implant stability at 2 years. 10 patients showed radiolographic signs of “notching”, and the mean Oxford Shoulder Score (OSS) at 2 years was 29 points (15–36 points). Interpretation — Stability analysis of the glenoid component of reversed total shoulder arthroplasty using reversed engineering (RE) model-based RSA indicated component stability at 2 years.

Abstract Implementation of the hydrogen economy for emission reduction will require storage facilities, and underground hydrogen storage (UHS) in porous media offers a readily available large‐scale option. Lack of studies on multiphase hydrogen flow in porous media is one of the several barriers for accurate predictions of UHS. This paper reports, for the first time, measurements of hysteresis in hydrogen‐water relative permeability in a sandstone core under shallow storage conditions. We use the steady state technique to measure primary drainage, imbibition and secondary drainage relative permeabilities, and extend laboratory measurements with numerical history matching and capillary pressure measurements to cover the whole mobile saturation range. We observe that gas and water relative permeabilities show strong hysteresis, and nitrogen as substitute for hydrogen in laboratory assessments should be used with care. Our results serve as calibrated input to field scale numerical modeling of hydrogen injection and withdrawal processes during porous media UHS.

Abstract Background Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (Mhyo) is the causative agent of enzootic pneumonia in pigs which adversely affects animal health and welfare, in addition to causing considerable economical losses. This paper presents the implementation of the national Mhyo eradication program in Norway, the subsequent population wide surveillance and documentation on the current freedom from Mhyo in the Norwegian pig population. In 1994, the Board of The Norwegian Pig Health Service decided on conducting a national surveillance and eradication program for Mhyo. The program aimed for population wide freedom from Mhyo, based on serological surveillance. A partial depopulation program was initiated in all Mhyo positive farrow-to-feed and farrow-to-finish herds. Total depopulation was performed in all positive finisher herds. Results From 1994 to 2009, a total of 138,635 pigs in 3211 herds were serologically tested for the presence of antibodies against Mhyo. Of these, 5538 (4%) individual samples and 398 (12.4%) of the herds were defined as positive. In 2009, the Norwegian pig population was declared free from Mhyo, and has been so since then. From 2009 through 2019, a total of 44,228 individual serum samples have been analyzed for the presence of antibodies against Mhyo and found negative in the National surveillance program. Conclusion Eradication of Mhyo infections has resulted in improved health and welfare of the Norwegian pig population. The success of the strategy is based on numerous factors, such as moderate to low prevalence of the agent, well documented and effective eradication protocols, accurate diagnostic tests, relatively small herds, low herd density in most parts of the country and negligible import of live pigs. In addition, economic benefit due to a premium on pigs marketed from herds free from Mhyo, a well-structured commercial pig population, and finally, the loyalty and significant effort of farmers, abattoir employees and veterinarians were crucial factors. To maintain the infection-free status at national level, a continuous alertness is required in the future to discover possible Mhyo infections and ensure rapid sampling and diagnostics. Any findings of Mhyo positive pig herds in Norway will result in immediate eradication.

Abstract Previous studies have indicated that high piglet blood hemoglobin concentration (HbC) at birth lead to better performance later in life. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the association between sow and piglet blood HbC at farrowing. A secondary objective was to investigate the relationship between sow HbC and probability of stillbirths. Farrowings were observed in 22 sows in a Danish commercial herd. Maternal blood HbC was measured 1–3 days before farrowing using a HemoCue 201 + Hb device. Similarly, HbC was measured from 144 offspring piglets before colostrum intake. Total number of born piglets per litter and parity of the sow were recorded and stillborn piglets were identified using a lung flotation technique. The association between HbC in sows and piglets was determined using a linear mixed model. The relationship between sow HbC and probability of stillbirths was determined using a generalized linear model. The mean HbC of the sows and piglets were 106.9 ± 12.2 and 124.4 ± 19.9 g/L, respectively. A tendency towards a positive association between HbC of the piglets and HbC of the sow around farrowing was found (P = 0.058). Additionally, the probability of stillbirths was negatively associated with the sow HbC (P = 0.021). These results indicate that HbC in newborn piglets may be increased by increasing the sow HbC. Furthermore, stillbirth rates might be reduced by increasing the HbC of the sow.

Abstract Background Anemia characterized by low hemoglobin concentration (HbC) is common in indoor housed pregnant sows. Iron is essential for hemoglobin synthesis and a number of metabolic processes including DNA synthesis and regulation of enzyme systems. In sows, anemia has been linked to lower HbC in piglets and increased occurrence of stillbirths. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of iron injection on hematology of pregnant sows and their offspring. Other objectives were to evaluate the effect of this injection on the probability of stillbirths and to study the tolerability of injected iron. Results A sow herd with bi-weekly batch farrowing was selected for the study and 100 sows at mid-gestation were randomly assigned to either a treatment (FeT) or a control (FeC) group. At the time of recruitment to the study (baseline), 46% of the sows in the herd were anemic with a HbC less than 103 g/L. However, none of the anemic sows had iron deficiency anemia on erythrocyte characterization. HbC decreased numerically during gestation in both the FeT (− 2.48 g/L) and FeC (− 2.99 g/L) groups but the decrease was insignificant between the groups (P = 0.79). Likewise, the change from baseline to farrowing and from baseline to post-farrowing in other hematologic variables was similar for both groups. The percentage of transferrin saturation was not statistically different between groups (P = 0.14). There was a batch effect (week of breeding) in most of the hematologic variables. The probability of stillbirth in the two groups did not differ (P = 0.94). None of the hematologic variables in piglets was significantly different between the two groups. The sows tolerated the iron injection well. Conclusions Intramuscular injection of two doses of 2500 mg iron 2 weeks apart at mid-gestation did neither change hematologic variables in sows nor in the piglets at farrowing. Similarly, iron treatment did not reduce the probability of stillbirths among the offspring. The sows recruited in this study tolerated the iron injections well. Further characterization of erythrocytes did not support that sows had iron deficiency anemia at baseline. Therefore, further studies on animals with well-defined anemia and with focus on the iron regulating hormone hepcidin are recommended.

Abstract Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between blood-glucose levels in one-day-old-piglets (ODOP), intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and pre-weaning mortality in a commercial piglet-producing herd in Norway. Material and methods The study was carried out in a non-crate commercial piglet-producing herd in Norway and 426 live born piglets from 31 litters were included. Piglets were blood-sampled, ear tagged, weighed and measured within 24 h after birth. Litter size, cross fostering and deaths until weaning were recorded. Blood was collected by vein puncture of Vena subcutanea abdominis and blood-glucose levels were measured using a handheld glucometer. Piglets were given an IUGR-score (1–3) based on head-morphology where a score of 3 is defined as an intrauterine growth restricted piglet. Results Of the 426 live born piglets, 391 piglets survived until weaning, resulting in 8.22% pre-weaning mortality. Mean piglet weight in ODOP was 1.59 kg (SD = 0.36), and mean blood-glucose level was 5.48 mmol/l (SD = 1.44). IUGR score 3 piglets had lower blood-glucose levels (Coef. = − 1.7 mmol/l, P

Abstract Background Mulberry Heart Disease (MHD) is a condition affecting mainly young pigs in excellent body condition. Feed efficient pigs showing high average daily gains are more likely to be affected. MHD has been described as a challenge in Norwegian pig production over the last decade despite abundant supplies of vitamin E, and selenium (Se) close to the upper limits set by the EU. From 2015 to 2017, samples from documented MHD field cases were collected and compared with controls regarding post mortem findings and Se concentrations in numerous internal and external organs were determined in order to characterize the Se distribution, and to identify any differences between MHD cases and controls. Case presentation Eight MHD cases from commercial farms and a pet pig producer located in the South West and East of Norway, and three control animals originating from these farms were included in this study. MHD cases and controls were weaned pigs with an average bodyweight (BW) of 17 kg (range 9 to 46 kg BW), with the exception of one pet piglet (Mangalica, 6 kg BW) that had only received sow milk. Selenium was determined in samples from the cardiovascular, digestive, immune, endocrine, integumentary, muscular, respiratory and urinary systems using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (QQQ ICP-MS). All pigs with MHD suffered sudden deaths. Control animals were euthanized without being bled prior to necropsy and sampling. Abstract Hematologic reference intervals are useful tools for interpretation of laboratory results in swine practice and research. Until now, there were no hematologic reference intervals established for gestating Danish sows and those established in other countries are either out-dated, produced using very few sows or incomplete with few variables. In the past few decades there have been significant increases in litter size due to breeding, as well as the development of new analytical procedures for hematology and statistical procedures for calculating reference intervals. Therefore, hematologic reference intervals representing current pig production and technology are greatly needed. The main objective of this study was to provide updated and complete hematologic reference intervals for Danish sows at mid-gestation. Blood samples were collected at mid-gestation from 248 sows belonging to five commercial herds in Denmark and the samples were analysed for several hematologic variables using the Advia 2120i Hematology System. The reference intervals were calculated according to the guidelines of American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology. The reference interval for hemoglobin concentration was 103.1–145.0 g/L. For red blood cells, hematocrit and mean corpuscular volume, the 95% reference intervals were 4.98–7.50 × 1012/L, 0.32–0.47 L/L, 57.0–69.3 fL, respectively. The reference intervals established in this study are different from those previously reported in the literature. These reference intervals add to the current knowledge and will be useful in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of several disease conditions in gestating sow populations.

Abstract Background The most prevalent Fusarium mycotoxin in grains is deoxynivalenol (DON). Contamination of swine feed with DON can result in reduced consumption and poor growth performance. Gestating and lactating sows need sufficient feed intake for fetus development during late gestation and milk production and body maintenance during lactation. Therefore, there is considerable concern in modern piglet production about the effects of DON contamination in sow feed. Most previous studies in sows have been done under experimental conditions, with DON levels ≥2.8 mg/kg feed. The aim of the current field trial was to investigate the effects of feeding grains that are naturally contaminated with more realistic levels of DON on sows during late gestation and lactation. Methods In a commercial, high-yield specific pathogen-free piglet production unit, 45 Norwegian Landrace × Yorkshire sows were fed three diets from 93 ± 1 days of gestation until weaning of the piglets, and average daily feed intake (ADFI), body weight (BW), production and reproduction performance, as well as sow blood parameters were recorded. Previous studies have shown that the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) can play an important role in modulating the variability of Indian summer monsoon rainfall (ISMR) over a 50–60-yr timescale. A significant positive correlation between the AMO and ISMR is found both in observations and models. However, instrumental records show that the relationship becomes non-significant or even of opposite sign after the mid-1990s, suggesting a weakening of the AMO–ISMR connection. The mechanism for the breakdown of the AMO–ISMR connection is investigated in the present work, and the results suggest that a substantial warming in the Indian–tropical western Pacific Ocean plays a role. The warming weakens the meridional gradient of tropospheric temperature between Eurasia and the Indian Ocean, and reduces the meridional sea level pressure gradient between the Indian Subcontinent and Indian Ocean, weakening the Indian summer monsoon. Thus, warming in the Indian–tropical western Pacific Ocean seems responsible for the weakened connection between the AMO and ISM.

The paper provides novel insights into the physics behind the wind turbine and wind farm blockages as well as their effects on the energy yield based on the momentum and energy balance. The current work presents blockage effects at two scales: the local scale and the wind farm scale. We clarify the combined effect of local blockages when more than one turbine is present. The work demonstrates why two turbines, which are positioned one behind the other, induce a mutual decrease in energy yield. When the turbines are placed in a row, there is an increase of energy from the end to the middle of the row because of the restriction of the expansion flow. As in the case of two turbines placed behind each other, back rows induce a power decrease for the rows in front of them and the effect increases from the edge to the center. The work also elucidates for the first time how the power output of an isolated row has a maximum in the center, whereas, in a wind farm, wind turbines on the edge of the first row could have maximum power. The findings are supported by CFD.

Abstract Background Since 1999, scientists have published evidence of transplacental infection by porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) and reproductive failure in pigs. Affected herds have frequently been start-up herds, either naïve or with a high proportion of PCV2 susceptible gilts. Here, delayed farrowing in non-vaccinated gilts was observed in a commercial specific pathogen free (SPF) herd. Mummified fetuses and stillborn piglets recovered from these gilts were PCV2 positive. Case presentation The case herd was a self-recruiting, piglet producing unit of 240 sows. After detecting livestock associated methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA, CC398), stamping out was imposed by the authorities. An SPF herd was re-established and all dams were vaccinated against PCV2 until the farmer decided to exclude this vaccine. The first non-vaccinated batch consisted of 76% gilts. Here, one gilt showed signs of impending farrowing. This gilt was slaughtered three to four weeks after the expected farrowing date without having expelled any uterine contents. In the subsequent batch consisting of 79% gilts, three gilts showed similar clinical signs. Delayed farrowing was observed in two of these gilts and the uterine contents from the third gilt were recovered at the abattoir. Mummified fetuses and stillborn piglets were recovered from all three gilts. High levels of PCV2 DNA (>107 viral genomic copies/ 500 ng tissue) were found in myocardial samples by real-time PCR analysis. One myocardial sample submitted for immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis showed moderate amounts of PCV2 antigen. In the subsequent batch consisting of 77% gilts, several weak-born piglets were seen across different litters. Conclusions This case report describes an apparent link between in utero PCV2 infection, pre partum nest-building behaviour, mammary development and delayed farrowing. To date, no reports have described imminent signs of farrowing and delayed farrowing as clinical signs in conjunction with transplacental PCV2 infection in Norway. Reinitiation of PCV2 vaccination was strongly advised in this herd due to recent depopulation and repopulation and the high proportion of gilts. Vaccination was effective because no further cases have occurred since.

The degree to which ocean heat is imprinted on the atmosphere and can be used to predict climate remains unclear. Here, the authors demonstrate skillful observation-based prediction of northwestern European and Arctic climate from upstream sea surface temperature anomalies in the subpolar North Atlantic.

ABSTRACT In the present study, we investigated behavioural responses and determined parameters of heart rate variability (HRV) to elucidate a relative activation of autonomic nervous system (ANS) during baseline (10 min) and in response to potentially stressful situations (10 min) in two pig breeds and sexes. Gilts (n = 21) and barrows (n = 9) of the Landrace × Yorkshire (LY; n = 15) and Landrace/Yorkshire × Landrace/Duroc (LYLD; n = 15) breeds were subjected to a novel object test (NOT) and a novel arena test (NAT). Basal ANS state differed in pigs across breeds but not sexes. Landrace × Yorkshire pigs had a significantly lower basal heart rate (HR) and low-frequency band (LF) with a higher root mean square of successive interbeat intervals (RMSSD) and high-frequency band (HF) than LYLD pigs. In the NOT, despite having similar cardiac responses, gilts had a longer duration of contact with a novel object, higher lying and standing duration, and a lower duration of walking compared with barrows. In the NAT, we found similar behaviour across sexes but a different degree of ANS state, with barrows having a significantly higher increase in LF/HF (power of the low frequency component divided by the power of the high-frequency band) compared with gilts. Landrace/Yorkshire × Landrace/Duroc pigs showed longer duration of contact with a novel object in the NOT accompanied by less lying and standing than LY pigs in both tests. No difference in ANS activation between breeds was found in the NOT. In the NAT, HR increased more from baseline to testing in LY pigs than in LYLD pigs. There is a complex and often contradictory nature of relationships between behaviour and cardiac responses to novelty in pigs of different breeds and sexes.

Nanoparticles have gained attention for increasing the stability of surfactant-based foams during CO2 foam-enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and CO2 storage. However, the behavior and displacement mechanisms of hybrid nanoparticle–surfactant foam formulations at reservoir conditions are not well understood. This work presents a pore- to core-scale characterization of hybrid nanoparticle–surfactant foaming solutions for CO2 EOR and the associated CO2 storage. The primary objective was to identify the dominant foam generation mechanisms and determine the role of nanoparticles for stabilizing CO2 foam and reducing CO2 mobility. In addition, we shed light on the influence of oil on foam generation and stability. We present pore- and core-scale experimental results, in the absence and presence of oil, comparing the hybrid foaming solution to foam stabilized by only surfactants or nanoparticles. Snap-off was identified as the primary foam generation mechanism in high-pressure micromodels with secondary foam generation by leave behind. During continuous CO2 injection, gas channels developed through the foam and the texture coarsened. In the absence of oil, including nanoparticles in the surfactant-laden foaming solutions did not result in a more stable foam or clearly affect the apparent viscosity of the foam. Foaming solutions containing only nanoparticles generated little to no foam, highlighting the dominance of surfactant as the main foam generator. In addition, foam generation and strength were not sensitive to nanoparticle concentration when used together with the selected surfactant. In experiments with oil at miscible conditions, foam was readily generated using all the tested foaming solutions. Core-scale foam-apparent viscosities with oil were nearly three times as high as experiments without oil present due to the development of stable oil/water emulsions and their combined effect with foam for reducing CO2 mobility

A new centrifugal compressor impeller design approach is presented, focusing on electrically driven compressors for gasoline engine and fuel cell applications. The performance and mechanical integrity are evaluated based on numerical simulations. Additionally, the numerical model is applied to several variations of the diffuser and volute geometries, in order to evaluate stage characteristics for diffuser area ratios of 110% and 150%, volute area ratios from 60% to 90%, and diffuser pinch ratios from 60% to 80%. The preliminary performance results show the capability to achieve a flow range comparable to a larger state-of-the-art impeller, with minor penalties regarding stage efficiency and near surge operating stability.

Deoxynivalenol (DON) contamination of feed may result in reduced growth, feed refusal, immunosuppression, and health problems in swine. Piglets can be exposed to DON via placenta before birth and via milk during lactation. The extent of early-life exposure of piglets to DON is, however, not fully known. This study was therefore aimed at investigating DON uptake in sows fed with naturally contaminated diets, DON transfer across placenta during late gestation, and transfer of DON to piglets via colostrum and milk. Forty-four crossbred sows were evaluated from day 93 ± 1 of gestation until weaning of piglets and fed with feed made from naturally DON-contaminated oats at three concentration levels: (1) control (DON < 0.2 mg/kg), (2) DON level 1 (1.4 mg DON/kg), and (3) DON level 2 (1.7 mg DON/kg). The transfer of DON to the piglets was evaluated in 15 sows, with repeated sampling of blood and milk from the sows and blood samples from five piglets of each litter. The piglet/sow plasma DON ratio and milk/plasma (M/P) DON ratio in sows were calculated to estimate the degree of transfer. Piglet/sow plasma ratios were 2.14 at birth, 2.30 within 12⁻36 h after parturition, 0.08 on day 7, 0.16 on day 21, and 0.20 at weaning. M/P ratios were 0.92, 1.11, 0.94, 1.21, and 0.90, respectively. The results indicate that DON is efficiently transferred across placenta and into milk. However, the low piglet/sow plasma ratios at mid-lactation to weaning indicate that the piglets were most strongly exposed to DON in early life, despite the high M/P ratios and efficient secretion of DON in milk throughout the entire lactation.

The demand for bioenergy caused an increased use of logging residues, branches and treetops that were previously left on the ground after harvesting. Residues are stored outdoors in piles and it is unclear to what extent fungi transform this material. Our objective was to quantify the amount of wood degrading fungi during storage using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) to detect basidiomycetous DNA in logging residues, a novel approach in this field. We found that the qPCR method was accurate in quantifying the fungal DNA during storage. As the moisture content of the piled logging residues decreased during the storage period, the fungal DNA content also decreased. Scots pine residues contained more fungal DNA than residues from Norway spruce. Loose piles had generally more fungal DNA than bundled ones.

Observations show a significant positive correlation between the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) over the past 100 years. Whether this connection is intrinsic to the climate system or caused by external forcing remains unclear in view of the substantial existence of anthropogenic greenhouse gases and aerosols in observations. Two state-of-the-art climate models (GFDL-CM3 and HadGEM2-ES), the historical simulations (1850–2005) of which show positive correlations between the AMO and ISM, similar to observation, are used to address this question. A significant positive AMO-ISM correlation exists in the control simulations with fixed preindustrial forcing with HadGEM2-ES, but not with GFDL-CM3. An in-depth analysis illustrates that the positive correlation in the HadGEM2-ES control run is more reasonable, since it simulates a similar teleconnection of the AMO with the North Pacific to that in both observations and previous studies. In comparison, the GFDL-CM3 control run fails to simulate the teleconnection of the AMO with the North Pacific. The positive AMO-ISM correlation in the historical simulation in GFDL-CM3 may be attributable to the role of the external forcing, since it is so strong that the AMO signals are excited additionally in the North Pacific. This study suggests that the AMO-ISM connection is intrinsic to the climate system, and highlights the crucial role played by the North Pacific in bridging such a connection.

Melatonin has a therapeutic effect on migraine, but the mechanisms underlying its antimigraine effect have not been elucidated. This study therefore investigated for the first time the receptor-mediated mechanisms of action of melatonin in nitroglycerin (NTG)- induced migraine-like hyperalgesic conditions in rats. Melatonin, nonselective MT1/MT2 antagonist luzindole, selective MT2 antagonist DH97 or potent MT3 antagonist prazosin, alone or in various combinations, were administered to NTG-induced migraine rats and ex-vivo meningeal preparations. Basal and drug-treated pain behaviors were assessed with the von-Frey test. CGRP levels in the trigeminal ganglia, trigeminal nucleus caudalis (TNC) and ex-vivo superfusate medium, as well as c-fos level in the TNC, were measured by ELISA. Meningeal mast cells were stained with toluidine-blue and examined histologically for their activation and count. Melatonin mitigated mechanical hyperalgesia, and c-fos and CGRP expression in the TNC, CGRP expression in trigeminal ganglia, CGRP release from meningeal afferents, all of which were induced by NTG, and also suppressed NTG-stimulated meningeal mast cell activation. The effects of melatonin were abolished in the presence of luzindole and DH97, respectively. However, prazosin did not reverse the effects of melatonin except for mechanical hyperalgesia. Luzindole and DH97 in combinations with prazosin also canceled the effects of melatonin, respectively, other than CGRP expression in the TNC. Melatonin exerts its anti-hyperalgesic effects through modulation of trigeminal expression and meningeal release of CGRP, and meningeal mast cell activation in experimental migraine-like conditions. Aims: Accumulating evidence indicates the involvement of TRESK potassium channels in migraine, however, effects of TRESK activation on migraine-related mechanisms remain unclear. We explored effects of TRESK channel modulation on migraine-related behavioral and molecular markers in in-vivo and ex-vivo rat models of migraine., Main Methods: The selective TRESK activator cloxyquin at different doses, the TRESK inhibitor A2764, and the migraine drug sumatriptan were tested alone or in different combinations in nitroglycerin (NTG)-induced in-vivo model, and in ex-vivo meningeal, trigeminal ganglion and brainstem preparations in which CGRP release was induced by capsaicin. Mechanical allodynia, CGRP and c-fos levels in trigeminovascular structures and meningeal mast cells were evaluated., Key Findings: Cloxyquin attenuated NTG-induced mechanical allodynia, brainstem c-fos and CGRP levels, trigeminal ganglion CGRP levels and meningeal mast cell degranulation and number, in-vivo. It also diminished capsaicin-induced CGRP release from ex-vivo meningeal, trigeminal ganglion and brainstem preparations. Specific TRESK inhibitor A2764 abolished all effects of cloxyquin in in-vivo and ex-vivo. Combining cloxyquin and sumatriptan exerted a synergistic effect ex-vivo, but not in-vivo., Significance: Our findings provide the experimental evidence for the anti-migraine effect of TRESK activation in migraine-like conditions. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the effects of therapeutic touch (TT) and music on sleep quality, menopausal symptoms, and quality of life in menopausal women., Methods: This study was carried out in an experimental model with a pretest, a posttest, and a control group. The study was completed with a total of 108 menopausal women in the TT, music, and control groups. Data were collected using a Participant Information Form, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Menopause Rating Scale, and the Menopause-Specific Quality of Life Scale. TT was applied in the TT group once a week for 4 weeks, and the music group was asked to listen to music for 30 minutes before bedtime every day for 4 weeks. Posttest data were collected in all groups 4 weeks after the pretest. The χ 2 , analysis of covariance, post hoc tests, and partial η2 methods were used to analyze the collected data., Results: When the effect of the pretest scores was adjusted, compared with the control group, there were statistically significant differences in the posttest scores of the participants in both the TT and music groups in the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index dimensions of subjective sleep quality ( P < 0.001), sleep latency ( P ≤ 0.001), and sleep disturbances ( P < 0.05). Background: Brain-gut axis dysregulation is observed in inflammatory bowel disease. However, the effect of altered gut flora on neuro- immunomodulation and its role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease are unknown. The aims of this study are to determine (i) whether colitis modifies the expression of c-fos, a marker of general neuronal activation in the brain and (ii) whether this activation could be modulated by probiotic bacteria., Methods: In this study, 28 Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups: colitis-probiotic group, non-colitis-fed-control group receiv- ing probiotic Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. Bulgaricus B3 strain for 7 days, colitis group, and sham group receiving only sodium chlo- ride. Colitis was induced by intracolonic administration of trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid-ethanol. The expression of c-fos was detected by immunohistochemistry in the brain tissue. Cytokines and inflammatory mediators were analyzed in the plasma. Histological scores and oxidative status were analyzed in the colon samples., Results: The inflammatory response was accompanied by increased levels of cytokines, lipid peroxidation activities, c-fos expression in the medial nucleus of the amygdala, and decreased levels of antioxidant enzymes in the colitis (P < .001). Probiotic treatment reversed those effects. Also, histopathologic scores were significantly lower in the probiotic-treated groups compared to the colitis group (P = .035). In contrast, the expression of c-fos was significantly increased in the paraventricular nucleus of hypothalamus in the probiotic- treated rats (P < .001)., Conclusion: Colitis and intestinal inflammation are associated with the activation of neurons in the limbic system creating stress-like effects in the brain. Probiotics diversely modulate limbic response and hypothalamic axis activity in addition to protective effects in inflammation.

Following an injury or resection, the mammalian liver has the capacity to regain its former volume and functioning by restoring itself. Studies have demonstrated that antioxidants play a role in hepatic regeneration. This study investigated the effect of 4-(3,4-dihydroxybenzoyloxymethyl) phenyl-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (PG) obtained from Origanum micranthum on liver regeneration. Sixty Wistar Albino rats were used. In the sham-operated group, a midline abdominal laparotomy was performed without hepatectomy. In the partial hepatectomy (PHx) group, the median and left lateral lobes were removed. Rats in the PHx group received 20 mg/kg/day PG intraperitoneally before being sacrificed at 24, 48, and 72 hrs, and 7 days later. Liver tissues were collected for immunohistochemical analysis and electron microscopic evaluation. We found an increase in mitotic index, and the numbers of Ki-67 stained hepatocytes in all PHx early stage groups (24 hr, 48hr, 72 hr), but not in 7-day groups. The regeneration mediators eNOS, iNOS, TNF-α and NF-κB were shown to increase in PHx groups. This increase was more prominent dependening on time. In the PHx treatment (PHx+PG) groups, while eNOS was still high, iNOS, TNF-α and NF-κB had decreased. The apoptotic index was markedly high in the PHx groups; this was prevented by PG treatment. These findings were supported by the ultrastructural results. Our findings indicate that PG supports liver regeneration, hepatocyte proliferation, reduced liver damage, and inflammatory mediators following PHx.

Background/aim: To study the effect of kisspeptin, a gonadotropin release stimulator, on the testicular tissue of the rat., Materials and Methods: Four groups were formed as follows: control, Kiss-10 501397645907nmol administration for 1 day, Kiss-10 administration for 13 days, and one last group kept for 7 days following Kiss-10 applied for 13 days. Testicular tissues were stained with hematoxylin-eosin, periodic acid Schiff, Masson trichrome staining, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferased UTP nick-end labeling, and Ki-67 immune staining. Serum testosterone levels were determined., Results: Serum testosterone level increased following acute application, while it was reduced by chronic treatment. Spermatogenic cells as stained by Ki-67 and TUNEL increased in the treated groups compared to the controls. Following a 7-day rest after treatment, a decrease in testosterone levels and Ki-67-stained cell numbers and an increase in TUNEL-stained cells were observed. Leydig cells showed increased vacuolization in the Kiss-1 group. Leydig cell vacuolization continued in the Kiss (13) group and was reduced in the Kiss (13 + 7) group., Conclusion: Kiss-10 increased spermatogenic cell proliferation, while testosterone level and proliferation decreased and apoptosis increased during the waiting period.
