Abstract

Globe-LFMC 2.0, an updated version of Globe-LFMC, is a comprehensive dataset of over 280,000 Live Fuel Moisture Content (LFMC) measurements. These measurements were gathered through field campaigns conducted in 15 countries spanning 47 years. In contrast to its prior version, Globe-LFMC 2.0 incorporates over 120,000 additional data entries, introduces more than 800 new sampling sites, and comprises LFMC values obtained from samples collected until the calendar year 2023. Each entry within the dataset provides essential information, including date, geographical coordinates, plant species, functional type, and, where available, topographical details. Moreover, the dataset encompasses insights into the sampling and weighing procedures, as well as information about land cover type and meteorological conditions at the time and location of each sampling event. Globe-LFMC 2.0 can facilitate advanced LFMC research, supporting studies on wildfire behaviour, physiological traits, ecological dynamics, and land surface modelling, whether remote sensing-based or otherwise. This dataset represents a valuable resource for researchers exploring the diverse LFMC aspects, contributing to the broader field of environmental and ecological research.

Abstract

[Background] The global human footprint has fundamentally altered wildfire regimes, creating serious consequences for human health, biodiversity, and climate. However, it remains difficult to project how long-term interactions among land use, management, and climate change will affect fire behavior, representing a key knowledge gap for sustainable management. We used expert assessment to combine opinions about past and future fire regimes from 99 wildfire researchers. We asked for quantitative and qualitative assessments of the frequency, type, and implications of fire regime change from the beginning of the Holocene through the year 2300., [Results] Respondents indicated some direct human influence on wildfire since at least ~ 12,000 years BP, though natural climate variability remained the dominant driver of fire regime change until around 5,000 years BP, for most study regions. Responses suggested a ten-fold increase in the frequency of fire regime change during the last 250 years compared with the rest of the Holocene, corresponding first with the intensification and extensification of land use and later with anthropogenic climate change. Looking to the future, fire regimes were predicted to intensify, with increases in frequency, severity, and size in all biomes except grassland ecosystems. Fire regimes showed different climate sensitivities across biomes, but the likelihood of fire regime change increased with higher warming scenarios for all biomes. Biodiversity, carbon storage, and other ecosystem services were predicted to decrease for most biomes under higher emission scenarios. We present recommendations for adaptation and mitigation under emerging fire regimes, while recognizing that management options are constrained under higher emission scenarios., [Conclusion] The influence of humans on wildfire regimes has increased over the last two centuries. The perspective gained from past fires should be considered in land and fire management strategies, but novel fire behavior is likely given the unprecedented human disruption of plant communities, climate, and other factors. Future fire regimes are likely to degrade key ecosystem services, unless climate change is aggressively mitigated. Expert assessment complements empirical data and modeling, providing a broader perspective of fire science to inform decision making and future research priorities.

Abstract

The Mediterranean Basin is a biogeography shaped by fires for millions of years. For the restoration of burned areas in the Mediterranean Basin, therefore, planning should increase resistance and resilience of plant communities to fire by considering adaptation strategies of plant species to fire. In this study, following the fire of 2021, affected approximately 12,500 hectares in Marmaris region, a rapid assessment method and post-fire restoration prescriptions were developed for the Datça-Bozburun Special Environmental Protection Area. By using EFFIS and Sentinel-2 satellite images, the burned area was determined and classified to fire severity with normalized burn ratio difference The regeneration potential of burned areas was revealed by counting the number of serotinous cones of Turkish red pine (Pinus brutia) and estimating potential coverage of maquis species in sampling areas based on stand type and burn severity levels. Open pine stands had the highest serotiny and high resprouting potential following maquis vegetation, while the young pine stands have the lowest level of serotiny. Considering results and slope degrees, six restoration prescriptions were developed for burned areas. While 6% of the burned area was recommended to be left unmanaged, natural regeneration + laying out branches with cones and natural regeneration with additional seeding, and artificial regeneration by planting saplings after terracing and tillaging were foreseen for the remaining areas. This simple and cost-effective methodology developed in this study is highly applicable to local practitioners and decision makers, as it can be carried out within two months following the fire., Akdeniz Havzası, milyonlarca yıldan beri yangınlara maruz kalan ve yangınlar sonucunda şekillenmiş bir biyocoğrafyadır. Bu nedenle Akdeniz Havzası’ndaki yanan alanların restorasyonunda bitki türlerinin yangına uyarlanma stratejilerinin dikkate alınarak, bitki topluluklarının sonraki yangına karşı direnç ve direngenliğinin artırılmasına yönelik planlamaların yapılması gereklidir. Bu çalışma kapsamında, Marmaris civarında yaklaşık 12.500 hektarlık alanı etkilemiş olan 2021 yangını sonrasında hızlı değerlendirme metodu geliştirilerek Datça-Bozburun Özel Çevre Koruma Bölgesi (ÖÇKB) için yangın sonrası restorasyon önerileri hazırlanmıştır. Çalışmada EFFIS (European Forest Fire Information System) ve Sentinel-2 uydu görüntülerinden faydalanılarak yanan alan sınırı belirlenmiş, alan yangın şiddetinin göstergesi olarak kullanılan normalize edilmiş yanma oranı farkı (dNBR) değerlerine göre sınıflandırılmıştır. Yanan alanların yenilenme potansiyeli, farklı meşcere tipleri ve yanma oranı sınıflarında belirlenen örnekleme alanlarında kızılçam (Pinus brutia) serotin kozalak sayısı ve maki elemanlarının potansiyel örtüş yüzdelerinin ölçülmesi ile ortaya konmuştur. Boşluklu kapalı kızılçam meşcerelerinin en yüksek serotinliğe ve makiliklerden sonra en fazla sürgün verme potansiyeline sahip olduğu, genç kızılçam meşcerelerinin (a ve b çağı) ise serotinlik bakımından en düşük değerde olduğu belirlenmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular ve alanların eğim dereceleri dikkate alınarak, Datça-Bozburun ÖÇKB içerisindeki yanan alanlar için aktif ve pasif restorasyon dahil altı farklı restorasyon önerisi geliştirilmiştir. Yanan alanın %6’sının kendi haline bırakılması önerilirken, geri kalan alanlar için doğal gençleştirme + kozalaklı dal serme ve tohum ekimi destekli doğal gençleştirme yöntemleri ile teraslama ve toprak işleme sonrası fidan dikimi gibi suni gençleştirmeler önerilmiştir. Bu çalışmada geliştirilen metodolojinin, yangını takiben iki ay içinde gerçekleştirilebilmesi ve basit ve düşük maliyetli olması itibariyle, yerel uygulamacılar ve karar vericiler için uygulanabilirliği yüksektir.

Abstract

Plant recruitment interactions (i.e., what recruits under what) shape the composition, diversity, and structure of plant communities. Despite the huge body of knowledge on the mechanisms underlying recruitment interactions among species, we still know little about the structure of the recruitment networks emerging in ecological communities. Modeling and analyzing the community-level structure of plant recruitment interactions as a complex network can provide relevant information on ecological and evolutionary processes acting both at the species and ecosystem levels. We report a data set containing 143 plant recruitment networks in 23 countries across five continents, including temperate and tropical ecosystems. Each network identifies the species under which another species recruits. All networks report the number of recruits (i.e., individuals) per species. The data set includes >850,000 recruiting individuals involved in 118,411 paired interactions among 3318 vascular plant species across the globe. The cover of canopy species and open ground is also provided. Three sampling protocols were used: (1) The Recruitment Network (RN) protocol (106 networks) focuses on interactions among established plants ("canopy species") and plants in their early stages of recruitment ("recruit species"). A series of plots was delimited within a locality, and all the individuals recruiting and their canopy species were identified; (2) The paired Canopy-Open (pCO) protocol (26 networks) consists in locating a potential canopy plant and identifying recruiting individuals under the canopy and in a nearby open space of the same area; (3) The Georeferenced plot (GP) protocol (11 networks) consists in using information from georeferenced individual plants in large plots to infer canopy-recruit interactions. Abstract

Scientists are becoming increasingly aware that disparities in opportunities for conducting and publishing research among scientists living under different socio-economic contexts have created pervasive biases and long-lasting impacts on our views of the natural world. These disparities are challenging the establishment of a global research agenda for a variety of disciplines, including seed ecology. Seed ecology has progressed enormously recently, but multiple barriers have hindered progress in the Global South where biodiversity and environmental complexity are highest. Here, we identify ten major challenges that seed ecologists from developing countries face in relation to planning, designing, conducting and publishing their research. We also propose several measures to overcome these challenges: (1) closing biodiversity knowledge shortfalls, (2) enhancing and creating long-term seed ecological networks, (3) supporting better infrastructure, (4) making fieldwork easier and safer, (5) unlocking funding opportunities, (6) promoting inclusive scientific meetings, (7) alleviating language barriers, (8) improving education, (9) shifting the notion of novelty and relevance and (10) supporting native seed markets. The authors recommend that the proposed solutions can be implemented by seed ecologists and the broader scientific community including funding agencies, research directors, journal editors and the academic publishing industry. Solutions can help mitigate multiple challenges simultaneously, thus offering a relatively inexpensive, fast and productive pathway for the development of seed ecology into a truly global research discipline that benefits scientists irrespective of their geographic location and background. Abstract

In recent decades, changes in fire activity have been observed in Europe. Fires can have large consequences for the provisioning of ecosystem services and for human well-being. Therefore, understanding the drivers of fire occurrence and improving the predictive capability of fire occurrence models is of utmost importance. So far, most studies have focused on individual regions with rather low spatial resolution, and have lacked the ability to apply the models in different regions. Here, a species distribution modelling approach (Maxent) was used to model fire occurrence in four regions across the Mediterranean Basin and the Alps using several environmental variables at two spatial resolutions. Additionally, a cross-regional model was developed and spatial transferability tested. Most models showed good performance, with fine resolution models always featuring somewhat higher performance than coarse resolution models. When transferred across regions, the performance of regional models was good only under similar environmental conditions. The cross-regional model showed a higher performance than the regional models in the transfer tests. The results suggest that a cross-regional approach is most robust when aiming to use fire occurrence models at the regional scale but beyond current environmental conditions, for example in scenario analyses of the impacts of climate change. We modelled fire occurrence in four regions across the Alps and the Mediterranean Basin and developed a cross-regional model. We assessed the effect of spatial resolution on model performance and tested the spatial transferability of the models. 37. Fire-created habitats support large mammal community in a Mediterranean landscape.

Abstract

Large mammals play significant roles in shaping the trophic structure of terrestrial ecosystems and affect the form of vegetation growth in many habitats. We studied large mammal community in a Mediterranean habitat mosaic generated by fires originally dominated by pine forests. We conducted camera-trapping surveys in three study sites with different fire histories, and we recorded eight large mammal species including brown bear (Ursus arctos), caracal (Caracal caracal), and wild goat (Capra aegagrus), which are of conservation importance. The mammal community found in the study sites was functionally diverse, including herbivores, omnivores, carnivores, seed dispersers, soil diggers, main preys, and top predators. The site burned 13 years ago had higher species richness than can be expected from a random pattern, but this was not the case in 30- and >40-year-old sites, showing the importance of relatively younger sites for large mammals. Eurasian badger had more probability to have more abundance in places with more open vegetation while wild goat had higher abundance in more dense vegetation. Young individuals of wild goat, brown bear, and wild boar were also detected in the study sites. The results indicate that burned habitats harbor a phylogenetically and functionally diverse large mammal community in landscapes originally dominated by Mediterranean pine forests. Therefore, these forests continue to retain importance for the large mammals after the fire, and burned habitats should be taken into consideration for the conservation and management plans together with mature forests in Mediterranean ecosystems. Abstract

Although reforestation is frequently utilized in many Mediterranean Basin countries to restore burned Mediterranean pine woodlands, post-fire recovery of the plant community is often neglected. To compare the post-fire recovery of the plant community following active and indirect post-fire restoration techniques, we studied three post-fire regeneration treatments in a salvagelogged Pinus brutia forest, including two active (plantation and seeding) restoration techniques and one indirect (natural regeneration). An unburned pine stand was also included in the study. We applied the point-intercept method to obtain data on the presence and cover of individual species and functional groups in six replicate one-hectare plots for each treatment. We found no significant differences in plant species richness among post-fire treatments; however, plant community composition and vegetation structure were significantly different between treatments. There was a shift in plant community structure when active restoration techniques were applied, from the woody- and resprouter-dominated plant community of the unburned site to an annual herbaceous- and non-resprouter-dominated one. Our results suggest that active restoration by planting tree saplings in Mediterranean pine forests after a fire may decrease the plant community's resilience and provide empirical evidence that pine plantation treatments change the plant species composition of these forests. Abstract

During the Pleistocene glacial periods, the ranges of many temperate species in Europe contracted southwards to refugia near the Mediterranean Basin. This study tested the 'expansion--contraction' model by applying the ecological niche modelling approach to one widespread temperate tree species, pedunculate oak, Quercus robur L., distributed across Europe and Anatolia. We projected the distribution of Q. robur under climatic conditions of the Present, the mid-Holocene [HOL, c. 6000 years before present (YBP)], the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, c. 22 000 YBP) and the Last Interglacial (LIG, c. 130 000 YBP). Quercus robur was at equilibrium with the climate as the model prediction was highly compatible with the its known distribution range under present bioclimatic conditions. The LIG and the HOL predictions gave a much broader distribution range than that during the LGM, suggesting its range contracted towards favourable areas in southern Europe and Anatolia. The results indicate that the glacial refugia hypothesis, based mainly on the 'expansion--contraction' model, applies to Q. robur, although possible extra-Mediterranean refugia in northern, western and southern France are also identified. Abstract

In Mediterranean fire-prone ecosystems, annual species specific to post-fire habitats should have a soil seed bank and should be able to germinate after a fire. Therefore, various fire-related cues can be expected to stimulate germination in post-fire annuals. Germination patterns of the rare annual Chaenorhinum rubrifolium (Plantaginaceae) were examined in response to mechanical scarification, heat shock, aqueous smoke, nitrogenous compounds, gibberellic acid, karrikinolide (KAR1), and mandelonitrile (a cyanohydrin analogue, MAN) under dark and photoperiod conditions in the laboratory. Combinations of these treatments were also included in the experiment. Strong physiological dormancy in the seeds of C. rubrifolium was partially broken by several fire-related germination cues, including smoke and nitrate, under light conditions. KAR1 and MAN also stimulated germination, and the highest improvement in germination was achieved in the KAR1 treatment in the presence of light. Heat shock + smoke and KAR1 + MAN combinations had positive synergetic and additive effects on germination under light conditions, respectively. The light played a crucial role in the promotion of germination. The results suggest that multiple fire-related cues operate to stimulate germination in C. rubrifolium, an annual species from the Mediterranean Basin. Despite its biological richness, Anatolian steppe ecosystem is currently under threat because of human activity. Anatolian steppe vegetation had been shaped by natural disturbances such as fire and grazing in the past but has been subjected to anthropogenic disturbances such as agriculture and domestic grazing due to increased human activity since a few thousands of years. In this study, it is suggested that the inverse relationship between fire and grazing is also present in Anatolian steppes, and therefore that socio-economic changes occurring in our time will affect disturbance regimes proceeding in this ecosystem in future.
