A point of study in the characterization of additive manufactured (AM) alloys is whether or not AM microstructure responds to external stimuli differently from conventionally manufactured alloys. Samples of Alloy 625, a nickel-based superalloy of interest, were produced by both additive manufacturing and conventional wrought methods. Samples of differing sizes were subjected to one of two different types of neutron fields during irradiation: fast neutron or reactor-spectrum neutron. Vickers microhardness measurements and transmission electron microscope images were used to analyze the differences between samples before and after they were subjected to the neutron fields. Experimentally characterizing radioactive materials can be time consuming and expensive. This is mainly due to the size requirements of inspected specimens. Due to the growing interest in using additively manufactured components in next-generation reactors, there is an urgent need to develop new accelerated testing techniques with regard to characterizing radiation damage. This will ensure a more timely certification of the unique material structures inherent to additively manufactured parts. In this study, we investigate a means to reduce the time investment, and thus the human exposure to radioactive specimens in need of experimental characterization. We determine the feasibility of using ultra-small specimens in lieu of much larger specimens to characterize bulk material properties before and after irradiation. Experiments were conducted to investigate this technique and compare it to conventional bulk irradiations and characterization activities. It was found that discernable radiation damage existed in the ultra-small specimens even after relatively short neutron irradiation times. The results also demonstrate decreased radiation hardening in additive manufactured Inconel 625 material relative to its wrought forms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of percutaneous magnetic resonance (MR) imaging-guided laser ablation and cryoablation for the treatment of symptomatic soft tissue vascular anomalies (VAs) of the trunk and extremities.Materials and Methods: An institutional review board-approved retrospective review was undertaken of all pediatric and adult patients who underwent MR imaging-guided and monitored laser ablation and/or cryoablation for the treatment of symptomatic peripheral soft tissue VA. Preablation and postablation MR imaging was independently reviewed. Pain scores on the visual analog scale (0 to 10) and self-reported subjective symptomatic improvement were assessed. Change in VA size and pain scores were compared using a paired t test.Results: Thirty patients (24 females; age, 10-75 years) with 34 VAs were treated for moderate to severe pain (n = 27) or swelling/mass effect (n = 3) with 60 total ablation sessions. The baseline maximum VA diameter was 9.5 cm ± 8.6. At baseline, all VAs (100%) demonstrated variable T2-weighted signal hyperintensity and enhancement. The baseline pain score was 6.4 ± 1.6. Clinical follow-up was available for 23 patients. At a mean follow-up time of 12.2 months ± 10.1, 19 of 20 (95%) patients treated for pain and 2 of 3 (67%) patients treated for swelling/mass effect reported partial or complete symptomatic relief. There was a significant decrease in the postablation pain scores (-5.7 ± 1.0, P < .001) and maximum VA size (-2.3 cm ± 2.7, P = .004), with >50% reduction in VA T2 signal (59%) and enhancement (73%). Nine of 30 (30%) patients experienced minor complications.Conclusions: MR imaging-guided and monitored percutaneous laser ablation and cryoablation appear to be safe and effective for the treatment of symptomatic peripheral soft tissue VAs. Diaporthe (syn. Phomopsis) species are well-known saprobes, endophytes or pathogens on a range of plants. Several species have wide host ranges and multiple species may sometimes colonise the same host species. This study describes eight novel Diaporthe species isolated from live and/or dead tissue from the broad acre crops lupin, maize, mungbean, soybean and sunflower, and associated weed species in Queensland and New South Wales, as well as the environmental weed bitou bush (Chrysanthemoides monilifera subsp. rotundata) in eastern Australia. The new taxa are differentiated on the basis of morphology and DNA sequence analyses based on the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region, and part of the translation elongation factor-1α and ß-tubulin genes. The possible agricultural significance of live weeds and crop residues ('green bridges') as well as dead weeds and crop residues ('brown bridges') in aiding survival of the newly described Diaporthe species is discussed. Practical non-invasive equipment modifications and effective acquisition methods to achieve robust and reliable real-time MR thermometry for monitoring of clinical hepatic microwave ablations were implemented. These included selection of the microwave generator location (inside versus outside the MR scan room), the number of radiofrequency chokes added to the microwave generator's coaxial lines, and the use of copper wool to maximize their electrical grounding. Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of MR thermometry images of a small fluid-filled phantom acquired during activation of microwave antenna were used to evaluate image quality as a function of each modification. SNR measurements corresponding to both locations of the microwave generator were comparable and so it was located outside the MR scan room. For this location, addition of one RF choke on the power and four chokes on the sensor coaxial lines was found to be optimal, corresponding to a 68% increase in SNR. Furthermore, image quality strongly depended on the proper electrical grounding of the power and sensor lines. SNR ratio (relative to SNR of baseline images) during activation of microwave generator was found to be 0.49 ± 0.28 without adequate grounding, and 0.88 ± 0.08 with adequate grounding (p = 0.002, Student's t-test). These SNR measurements were sufficiently sensitive to detect issues related to equipment performance and hence formed part of the quality assurance testing performed prior to each clinical treatment. Incorporating these non-invasive approaches resulted in significant improvements to image quality and, importantly while maintaining the clinical integrity of the microwave system which is of paramount importance in a highly regulated healthcare environment., (Copyright © 2019 Associazione Italiana di Fisica Medica. On March 19, 2019, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Zulresso (brexanolone) for intravenous use for the treatment of postpartum depression (PPD) in adult women. The decision was based on three recent clinical trials following an FDA priority review and breakthrough therapy designation. Brexanolone is now available through a restricted process called the Zulresso Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy Program that requires the drug to be administered by a healthcare provider in a certified healthcare facility. Brexanolone represents an important new treatment option to address treatment-resistant depressive symptoms. In this article, we discuss the current critical need for PPD treatments, the mechanisms of brexanolone action, and the efficacy and drug safety studies that led to FDA approval. Additionally, we discuss some limitations of the current formulation, specific populations of women that might benefit from this treatment, and how new drugs on the horizon may increase the ability to treat PPD in a variety of patient populations., (Copyright 2019 Clarivate Analytics.)
