1. Compact Polarization-Entangled Photon Source Based on Coexisting Noncritically Birefringent and Quasi Phase Matching in a Nonlinear Crystal

Abstract

Polarization-entangled photons are indispensable to numerous quantum technologies and fundamental studies. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a novel source that generates collinear polarization-entangled photons by simultaneously achieving two distinct types of phase-matching conditions (noncritically birefringent and quasi phase matching) in a periodically poled nonlinear crystal with a large poling period of 2 mm. The photon pairs are generated in a polarization-entangled state with a fidelity and concurrence of 0.998 and 0.935, respectively, and violate the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality by 84 standard deviations. The compact source does not require interferometer, delicate domain structures, or post selection, and is advantageous for scalable quantum computing and communication, where many replicas or chip-scale devices are needed.

Abstract

MIDI-sheet music alignment is the task of finding correspondences between a MIDI representation of a piece and its corresponding sheet music images. Rather than using optical music recognition to bridge the gap between sheet music and MIDI, we explore an alternative approach: projecting the MIDI data into pixel space and performing alignment in the image domain. Our method converts the MIDI data into a crude representation of the score that only contains rectangular floating notehead blobs, a process we call bootleg score synthesis. Furthermore, we project sheet music images into the same bootleg space by applying a deep watershed notehead detector and filling in the bounding boxes around each detected notehead. Finally, we align the bootleg representations using a simple variant of dynamic time warping. On a dataset of 68 real scanned piano scores from IMSLP and corresponding MIDI performances, our method achieves a 97.3% accuracy at an error tolerance of one second, outperforming several baseline systems that employ optical music recognition., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. Abstract

Background and purposeA minority of intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas progress with time. We sought to determine features that predict progression and define outcomes of patients with progressive dural arteriovenous fistulas.Materials and methodsWe performed a retrospective imaging and clinical record review of patients with intracranial dural arteriovenous fistula evaluated at our hospital.ResultsOf 579 patients with intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas, 545 had 1 fistula (mean age, 45 ± 23 years) and 34 (5.9%) had enlarging, de novo, multiple, or recurrent fistulas (mean age, 53 ± 20 years; P = .11). Among these 34 patients, 19 had progressive dural arteriovenous fistulas with de novo fistulas or fistula enlargement with time (mean age, 36 ± 25 years; progressive group) and 15 had multiple or recurrent but nonprogressive fistulas (mean age, 57 ± 13 years; P = .0059, nonprogressive group). Whereas all 6 children had fistula progression, only 13/28 adults (P = .020) progressed. Angioarchitectural correlates to chronically elevated intracranial venous pressures, including venous sinus dilation (41% versus 7%, P = .045) and pseudophlebitic cortical venous pattern (P = .048), were more common in patients with progressive disease than in those without progression. Patients with progressive disease received more treatments than those without progression (median, 5 versus 3; P = .0068), but as a group, they did not demonstrate worse clinical outcomes (median mRS, 1 and 1; P = .39). However, 3 young patients died from intracranial venous hypertension and intracranial hemorrhage related to progression of their fistulas despite extensive endovascular, surgical, and radiosurgical treatments.ConclusionsFew patients with dural arteriovenous fistulas follow an aggressive, progressive clinical course despite treatment. Younger age at initial presentation and angioarchitectural correlates to venous hypertension may help identify these patients prospectively.

15. Magnetopause location modeling using machine learning: inaccuracy due to solar wind parameter propagation.

Abstract

An intrinsic limitation of empirical models of the magnetopause location is a predefined magnetopause shape and assumed functional dependences on relevant parameters. We overcome this limitation using a machine learning approach (artificial neural networks), allowing us to incorporate general, purely data-driven dependences. For the training and testing of the developed neural network model, a data set of about 15,000 magnetopause crossings identified in the THEMIS A-E, Magion 4, Geotail, and Interball-1 satellite data in the subsolar region is used. A cylindrical symmetry around the direction of the impinging solar wind is assumed, and solar wind dynamic pressure, interplanetary magnetic field magnitude, cone angle, clock angle, tilt angle, and corrected Dst index are considered as parameters. The effect of these parameters on the magnetopause location is revealed. The performance of the developed model is compared with other empirical magnetopause models. Finally, we demonstrate and discuss the inaccuracy of magnetopause models due to the inaccurate information about the impinging solar wind parameters based on measurements near the L1 point.
