Abstract Urine leakage volume is an important indicator reflecting the severity of incontinence in patients. Currently, there are limited smart diapers capable of continuous dynamic monitoring of urine volume. This study developed two types of urine volume sensors, resistive and capacitive, which were integrated with traditional diapers to assess urine leakage levels: mild leakage (0–5 mL), moderate leakage (6–12 mL), and severe leakage (above 12 mL). Three patterns of resistive urine volume sensors were designed, and the results showed that the A pattern could accurately determine urine volume and frequency levels. Additionally, three electrode spacing designs were tested for the capacitive urine volume sensors. The results indicated that the sensor with a 1 cm electrode spacing could determine the urine volume range, with each 1 mL increase in urine causing a capacitance rise of approximately 1.5–1.8 pF, with an error of about ± 0.5 mL per increment. Both resistive and capacitive methods showed high accuracy in monitoring urine volume and frequency. This study validated the feasibility of smart flexible fabric sensors in detecting urine volume and frequency, providing a potential solution for better assessing and managing the condition of incontinence patients.

Simple Summary: Incorporating forage plantain into the diet of grazing dairy cows has the potential to reduce nitrogen (N) losses from pastoral systems. One of the key mechanisms for reduced N loss from plantain-fed cows is through increased urine volume and diluted urine N concentration, which increases the % of urine N used for plant growth. The aim of this study was to determine whether lower proportions of plantain in the diet would be effective in achieving changes in urination. The results showed that compared to cows grazing traditional perennial ryegrass and white clover pastures, cows with 25% plantain in their apparent dietary intake increased urine volume and urination frequency and reduced urine N% in the morning. When dietary plantain was less than 20%, there was only a small effect on increased urine volume, though morning urine N% was reduced. Ensuring more than 20% plantain in the diet has the potential to reduce N leaching risk via reduced urinary N load from grazing dairy cows. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of grazing plantain-based pastures on urine volume, urination frequency, and urinary nitrogen (UN) concentration of dairy cows under a typical pastoral dairy practice offering approximately 25% supplemented feeds. The experiment was a completely randomised design with three pasture treatments (perennial ryegrass–white clover (RGWC); RGWC + low plantain rate (PLL); and RGWC + high plantain rate (PLH)), five replicate plots, and repeated in two sequential grazing periods. Forty-five lactating Friesian × Jersey cows were randomly assigned into three groups of 15 animals each to graze over six days in adaptation paddocks and three days in experimental plots. Urine flow sensors were used to measure urine volume and urinary frequency, while spot urine sampling was conducted to determine nitrogen (N) concentration in cow urine. The results showed that including 25% plantain in the diet (PLH) increased daily urine volume by 44% and the daily number of urinations by 28%, compared to grazing the RGWC pasture. In addition, N concentration in cow urine was decreased by 18 and 29% when the diet contained 18% and 25% plantain, respectively. In conclusion, under a typical dairy farm practice, incorporating plantain into the RGWC pasture with the proportion of 25% plantain in the diet can increase the number of urine patches and reduce the concentration of N in the urine, thereby providing the opportunity to decrease N leaching from pastoral systems. Pendahuluan: Masa postpartum sangat penting, karena sering terjadinya komplikasi antara lain infeksi genetalia. Beberapa faktor penyebab terjadinya infeksi adalah kurang nutrisi, kurang menjaga kebersihan diri atau perineum, kurang istirahat, kurang mobilisasi dan olah raga serta karena peningkatan frekuensi berkemih yang dapat menimbulkan infeksi di sekitar genetalia. Tujuan penelitian: ini adalah untuk menganalisis bagaimana pengaruh latihan kegel terhadap frekuensi BAK pada ibu postpartum di Praktik Mandiri Bidan Husniyati Palembang. Metode penelitian: ini adalah quasi eksperimen dengan disain post test only non equivalent control group yaitu pengukuran dilakukan setelah kelompok intervensi diberikan perlakuan, kemudian hasil pengukuran atau observasi dibandingkan dengan hasil observasi pada kelompok kontrol, dengan variabel terikat adalah frekuensi BAK dan variabel bebas adalah latihan kegel. Sampel penelitian diambil menggunakan teknik purposive sampling, terdiri dari 30 ibu postpartum yang dibagi dalam 2 kelompok: kelompok latihan kegel; kelompok kontrol. Analisis yang digunakan adalah analisis univariat dan bivariat. Hasil penelitian: dari hasil uji statistik Kendall’s tau, tidak ada pengaruh latihan kegel terhadap frekuensi berkemih ibu postpartum di PMB Husniyati Kota Palembang dimana p value 0,063 (> 0,05). The postpartum period is very important, because frequent complications include genetal infection. Some of the factors causing infection are lack of nutrition, lack of personal hygiene or perineum, lack of rest, lack of mobilization and exercise as well as due to increased frequency of urination which can cause infection around genetalia. The purpose of this study was to analyze how the effect of Kegel exercises on the urinate frequency in postpartum mothers in the PMB Husniyati Palembang. The method in this study is a quasi-experimental design with a post-test only non-equivalent control group that is the measurement carried out after the intervention group is given treatment, then the measurement or observation results are compared with the results of observations in the control group, with the dependent variable being the frequency of BAK and the independent variable is the kegel exercise. The research sample was taken using a purposive sampling technique, consisting of 30 postpartum mothers divided into 2 groups: the kegel exercise group; control group. The analysis used is univariate and bivariate analysis. The results of Kendall's statistical test results know, there is no effect of Kegel exercises on the urinate frequency of postpartum maternal at PMB Husniyati Palembang where p value is 0.063 (> 0.05).

Background Urinary disorders in cats often require subjective caregiver quantification of clinical signs to establish a diagnosis and monitor therapeutic outcomes. Objective To investigate use of a video recording system (VRS) to better assess and quantify urination behaviors in cats. Animals Eleven healthy cats and 8 cats with disorders potentially associated with abnormal urination patterns. Methods Prospective study design. Litter box urination behaviors were quantified with a VRS for 14 days and compared to daily caregiver observations. Video recordings were analyzed by a behavior analysis software program. Results The mean number of urinations per day detected by VRS (2.5 ± 0.7) was significantly higher compared with caregiver observations (0.6 ± 0.6; P < .0001). Five cats were never observed in the litter box by their caregivers. The mean number of urinations per day detected by VRS was significantly higher for abnormal cats (2.9 ± 0.7) compared with healthy cats (2.1 ± 0.7; P = .02); there were no apparent differences in frequency between these groups reported by caregivers (0.7 ± 1.0 and 0.5 ± 1.0, respectively). There were no differences in mean urination time between healthy and abnormal cats as determined by VRS or caregivers. Mean cover‐up time determined by VRS was significantly longer in healthy cats (22.7 ± 12.9 seconds/urination) compared with abnormal cats (8.7 ± 12.9 seconds/urination; P = .03); differences in cover‐up time were not detected by caregivers. Conclusions and Clinical Importance Caregivers commonly underestimate urination frequency in cats when compared to video‐based observations. Video recording appears to facilitate objective assessment of urination behaviors and could be of value in future clinical studies of urinary disorders in cats.

The objective of this study was to assess live weight gain, animal behaviour and N excretion in the urine of dairy heifers fed herbs during autumn and spring. Sixty heifers were allocated into five dietary treatments: 100% ryegrass-white clove pasture (100RG/WC); 50% RG/WC + 50% chicory (50CH); 75% RG/WC + 25% chicory (25CH); 75% RG/WC + 25% plantain (25PL); and 50% RG/WC + 50% plantain (50PL). The 100RG/WC had the highest (5.0 times/6 h) and lowest (2.5 times/6 h) urination frequency compared with other treatments in autumn (averaged 3.5 times/6 h) and spring (averaged 4.5 times/6 h), respectively. The heifer LWG in spring was higher in 25CH (1.36 kg/day) than other treatments (averaged 1.10 kg/day). Urinary N concentration was 0.18% and 0.23% in autumn and spring, respectively, across treatments, with no difference between treatments. The study demonstrated inconsistent results of use of chicory and plantain as a mitigation tool to reduce the environmental impact of heifer rearing systems in autumn and spring. A urine sensor has been developed to measure the volume and nitrogen (N) concentration of individual urination events from female cattle in the field. The objective of this paper was to establish that the sensor’s refractive index (RI) value could be used to accurately estimate urinary-N concentration. Individual urine samples (168 in total) were collected from 18 cows that were fed monocultures (ryegrass, clover or turnips) or from cattle that grazed conventional mixed pasture (ryegrass/white clover) in the field. Regression analysis of urine sensor RI values with either urinary-N or potassium (K) concentrations yielded strong linear relationships (P < 0.001) for all feed types. However, individual regression lines varied between feed types, particularly for turnips. We conclude the use of RI in the sensor provides an accurate estimate of urinary-N but site-specific calibration of the sensor is warranted due to different feed types affecting urine K:N ratio and, by inference, other aspects of composition. BACKGROUND The main source of nitrogen (N) leaching from grazed pastures is animal urine with a high N deposition rate (i.e. per urine patch), particularly between late summer and early winter. Salt is a potential mitigation option as a diuretic to induce greater drinking-water intake, increase urination frequency, decrease urine N concentration and urine N deposition rate, and thereby potentially decrease N leaching. This hypothesis was tested in three phases: a cattle metabolism stall study to examine effects of salt supplementation rate on water consumption, urination frequency and urine N concentration; a grazing trial to assess effects of salt (150 g per heifer per day) on urination frequency; and a lysimeter study on effects of urine N rate on N leaching. RESULTS Salt supplementation increased cattle water intake. Urination frequency increased by up to 69%, with a similar decrease in urine N deposition rate and no change in individual urination volume. Under field grazing, sensors showed increased urination frequency by 17%. Lysimeter studies showed a proportionally greater decrease in N leaching with decreased urine N rate. Modelling revealed that this could decrease per-hectare N leaching by 10-22%. CONCLUSIONS Salt supplementation increases cattle water intake and urination frequency, resulting in a lower urine N deposition rate and proportionally greater decrease in urine N leaching. Objective: To evaluate the effects of massage therapy on total serum bilirubin (TSB) levels and frequency of defecation, urination, and feeding in newborns who receive phototherapy for indirect hyperbilirubinemia., Design: A randomized controlled clinical trial., Setting: Ankara University Cebeci Research and Training Hospital and 29 May State Hospital in Ankara, Turkey., Participants: Fifty full-term newborns with indirect hyperbilirubinemia who underwent phototherapy., Methods: The newborns were randomly allocated to an intervention group (n = 25) or a control group (n = 25). Newborns in the intervention group received massage therapy throughout the duration of phototherapy for 15 minutes twice per day; newborns in the control group received routine care during phototherapy. Every 24 hours, TSB levels were measured, and the frequencies of defecation, urination, and feeding were also calculated for each newborn., Results: We found no differences in the characteristics of the newborns or in TSB levels between groups at enrollment. After treatment, TSB levels were lower in the intervention group (p < .001). Frequencies of defecation, urination, and feeding were significantly greater in the intervention group than in the control group., Conclusion: Massage therapy had significant effects on TSB levels, feeding, breastfeeding, defecation, and urination in newborns who received phototherapy for indirect hyperbilirubinemia. Massage therapy can be added as routine care for full-term newborns with hyperbilirubinemia under phototherapy and may be an effective supplementary intervention., (Copyright © 2020.
