Abstract

In this work, UV/NH2Cl was utilized to remove ciprofloxacin (CIP) from water and the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) following disinfection was investigated to determine its applicability and safety. It was demonstrated that the degradation of CIP in UV/NH2Cl was significantly more effective than that in NH2Cl oxidation alone or UV alone. The presence of NOM (0–8 mg L−1), CO32−(0–8 mM), and NO3−(0–8 mM) inhibited CIP degradation with kobs,CIPfrom 0.030 to 0.012, 0.017, and 0.020 min−1, respectively. In contrast, the NH2Cl concentration (0.25–2 mM) and Cl−(0–8 mM) promoted the degradation of CIP with kobs,CIPincreasing from 0.022–0.054 min−1and 0.030–0.034 min−1. HCO3−had dual effects on the degradation of CIP. pH slightly affected the degradation of CIP by UV/NH2Cl in near neutral pH range but greatly inhibited it under strong acidic and alkaline conditions. The reaction rate constant of CIP and HO was calculated to be kHO,CIP= 3.0 × 109M−1s−1and the contribution of the reactive chlorine species and reactive nitrogen species to CIP degradation was much greater than that of HO. Intermediate products of CIP were identified and analyzed to propose 3 possible degradation pathways. The formation of DBPs with NH2Cl disinfection was lower than that with NaClO disinfection after the oxidation of UV/NH2Cl. Briefly, this study provides much useful information for a better understanding of the UV/NH2Cl process for water treatment.

Abstract

In this work, the degradation performance of Fe2+/PAA/H2O2 on three typical pollutants (reactive black 5, ANL, and PVA) in textile wastewater was investigated in comparison with Fe2+/H2O2. Therein, Fe2+/PAA/H2O2 had a high removal on RB5 (99%) mainly owing to the contribution of peroxyl radicals and/or Fe(IV). Fe2+/H2O2 showed a relatively high removal on PVA (28%) mainly resulting from ·OH. Fe2+/PAA/H2O2 and Fe2+/H2O2 showed comparative removals on ANL. Additionally, Fe2+/PAA/H2O2 was more sensitive to pH than Fe2+/H2O2. The coexisting anions (20–2000 mg/L) showed inhibition on their removals and followed an order of HCO3− > SO42− > Cl−. Humic acid (5 and 10 mg C/L) posed notable inhibition on their removals following an order of reactive black 5 (RB5) > ANL > PVA. In practical wastewater effluent, PVA removal was dramatically inhibited by 88%. Bioluminescent bacteria test results suggested that the toxicity of Fe2+/PAA/H2O2 treated systems was lower than that of Fe2+/H2O2. RB5 degradation had three possible pathways with the proposed mechanisms of hydroxylation, dehydrogenation, and demethylation. The results may favor the performance evaluation of Fe2+/PAA/H2O2 in the advanced treatment of textile wastewater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The residues of antibiotics in the environment posed serious threat to public health and aquatic ecosystem. This study synthesized a catalyst FeOOH@WS2as activator for persulfate (PS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) system, with sulfachloropyridazine (SAP) as the target pollutant. In the FeOOH@WS2/PS system, influence factors such as catalyst dosage, PS concentration, solution pH, inorganic anions and natural organic matter, which could affect the catalytic efficiency for SAP degradation were conducted. Results demonstrated that increasing FeOOH@WS2doses and PS concentrations sped up SAP’s rate of degradation. Besides, HO⋅, SO4•−, O2•−and 1O2were existed by using the radicals quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometry (EPR) analysis. It was found that 1O2dominated the rapid SAP degradation. According to the intermediates found by analysis, the SAP degradation mechanism was postulated. Additionally, characterization and recycle results implied that the stability and durability of FeOOH@WS2were also outstanding.

Abstract

Antibiotics are frequently detected in water, which can pose a great threat to human health. In this paper, an ultraviolet/persulfate (UV-C/PS) advanced oxidation process was utilized to remove a common antibiotic sulfachloropyridazine (SCP) efficiently from groundwater. The degradation mechanism and kinetics were investigated by researching several key influencing factors, including two radical scavengers (tert-butanol and methyl alcohol), dosages of PS, initial pH, anions (H2PO4−, HPO42−, Cl−, HCO3−and NO3−) and natural organic matter. The degradation of SCP followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model and better degradation was achieved in acidic conditions than in alkaline conditions. The effect of scavengers indicated that both SO4− and HO contributed to the degradation of SCP and SO4− played a major role. The degradation rate constants of SCP with SO4− and HO at the initial pH of 6.3 were calculated to be kSCP,HO= 0.867 × 109M−1s−1and kSCP,SO4−= 3.073 × 109M−1s−1in the UV-C/PS system by the relative rate method. Increasing the concentration of PS obviously facilitated the degradation and mineralization rates of SCP, which could reach 100% and 90%, respectively, at a PS dosage of 4.0 mM after 2 h. Also, H2PO4−and Cl−promoted the degradation of SCP, whereas the removal of SCP was restrained by the addition of HPO42−, HCO3−and large dosages of NO3−. The proposed degradation pathway of SCP was obtained by analyzing the intermediates.

Abstract

The use of antibiotics has become an indispensable part of the production and life of human society. Among them, sulfonamide antibiotics widely used in humans and animals are considered to be one of the most crucial antibiotics. However, antibiotics are difficult to degrade naturally, leading to an accumulation in the environment and a potential hazard to human health. In this paper, WS 2 as a co-catalyst could reduce trace Fe(III) to Fe(II) which exhibited a great activating ability to PS through the exposed W(IV) active sites, and formed the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle to degrade sulfachloropyridazine (SCP) continuously. This paper systematically discussed the degradation of SCP under different conditions in the PS/WS 2 /Fe(III) system, including the amount of WS 2 , Fe(III) concentration, PS concentration, initial pH, natural organic matter (NOM) and common anions (NO 3 - , Cl - , HCO 3 - , HPO 4 2- and H 2 PO 4 - ). The experimental results showed that PS/WS 2 /Fe(III) system possessed a strong degradation ability for SCP in a wide pH range. NO 3 - and Cl - could promote the degradation of SCP a little. HCO 3 - , HPO 4 2- and H 2 PO 4 - could significantly inhibit the degradation of SCP. The main types of free radicals that degraded SCP were explored.
