1. Effects of Polycarboxylate-Lignosulfonate Superplasticizer on the Engineering Properties and Cementitious Paste Thickness of Pervious Concrete

Abstract

This study investigates the effects of polycarboxylate-lignosulfonate superplasticizer (PLS), water, and cement content on mechanical, physical and cementitious paste thickness of pervious concrete (PC) for its further application in urban areas. For this reason, 17 PC mixtures containing different portions of PLS (0.10% to 1.00% of the cement content), water-to-cement ratio (0.30 to 0.40), and cement content (315 to 350 kg/m3) with a constant range aggregate size (4.75 to 9.5 mm) were designed, tested, and analyzed by Design of Expert (DoE). The results showed that increasing the proportion of PLS, water, and cement increased the compressive strength of PC at ages of 7, 11, and 28 days. However, the permeability and porosity would decrease due to formation of a pasty mixture. The effect of water content on changing the compressive strength was more significant than other variables, especially in the range of 0.3 to 0.35. Apart from this, increasing the portion of variables resulted in increasing the average cementitious paste thickness and the number of line segments, which both resulted in an increment of compressive strength. The PC mixture with 1.00% of PLS, W/C ratio of 0.40, and cement content of 350 kg/m3 had the maximum compressive strength of 18.35 MPa with reasonable porosity and permeability. This system is suitable as pavements in urban areas with light-traffic load, green spaces, and sidewalks to mitigate the anthropization impacts.

Abstract

The rapid urbanization and industrialization of a country have created pressure on climate change. Industrial waste is a hazardous by-product produced by industrial activities. As the world moves towards sustainability era, industrial waste which is rendered useless has started to gain attention by researchers to explore the feasibility of recycling industrial waste by producing a more sustainable construction material. In view of the industrialization policy in Sarawak, the number of investors investing in the state is increasing. This will substantially increase the amount of industrial waste produced and it will in turn impose pressure and threat to the environment in Sarawak. Silicomanganese slag is a common industrial waste generated in the ferro alloy smelting plant in Sarawak. The recycling potential of silicomanganese slag is not commonly explored by researchers compared to fly ash and silica fume. This paper intends to present a review on the feasibility of recycling silicomanganese slag to produce a more sustainable construction product. A desktop study has been performed to explore the feasibility of silicomanganese slag on its engineering aspects. Results of the review indicated that silicomanganese slag has a potentiality to be recycled into a more sustainable construction product especially as alternative cementitious material. This study concluded that usage of silicomanganese slag should be explored on different types of construction products in order to promote greener construction materials. It is critical in responding the call of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Goal 12 of responsible consumption and production to promote sustainable use of generated waste produced by industrial activities. 23. The status quo of Facebook usage among young generations in civil engineering education

Abstract

AbstractThe Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry is known to be slow in technology adoption. Higher education is an industry that well-placed to assist the AEC industry to move towards digital transformation. Given the popularity of Facebook among generations Y (ages 28–42 years old) and Z (ages 13–27 years old), Facebook could be an innovative learning and teaching platform in higher education. Although research on Facebook usage has been studied extensively in the past, users’ behaviour tends to evolve with the emergence of new social media and new features. Hence, this study aims to explore the current state of Facebook usage among civil engineering undergraduate students. Data was collected through a questionnaire survey. Results of questionnaire discovered that Facebook usage among civil engineering students could be categorized into four groups, namely: ‘Fulfill basic needs of psychological health’, ‘Personal enhancement/life long learning’, ‘Maintaining social connectivity’ and ‘Engaging for academic achievement’. In conclusion, Facebook is a viable and preferable choice of a learning and teaching platform among younger generations. Educators can consider exploring further the benefits and limitations of using Facebook in improving students’ learning experience and collaborative skills in civil engineering programme in the digitalization era.

Abstract

Malaysian construction industry is still lagging in new technology adoption, while the world is moving towards Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0). This study aims to identify the critical barriers of hindering the implementation of IR 4.0 among stakeholders in construction industry by using a set of questionnaires. The impacts of IR 4.0 to construction industry were also studied. The quantitative data were analysed using Relative Importance Index. The data revealed that the top barriers were related to technology deficiency and financial issue, while the greatest impacts of IR 4.0 implementation on project performance were safety, project success and time performance. The future of construction industry moving towards a fully digitalization is promising, although a longer time is required to achieve the desired status.

30. Cost-influencing risk factors in infrastructure projects on soft soils

Abstract

AbstractIn view of economic growth, infrastructure projects are gradually increasing in terms of quantity, size and complexities. As such, construction of infrastructure projects on soft soils is unavoidable. This poses challenges in infrastructure development as infrastructure construction is vulnerable to greater risks. Review of the literature showed that research on risk assessment of infrastructure projects on soft soils is deficient. Hence, this research was focused on cost-influencing risk factors during the construction phase. Analytical hierarchy process (AHP) was used to determine the risk prioritization of infrastructure projects on soft soils through questionnaire survey. It is found that controllable (internal) risk factors, such as legal and project-client risks and uncontrollable (external) risk, such as economic and soil condition risk play a critical role in infrastructure project’s cost on soft soils during the construction stage.
