Dense retrieval in most industries employs dual-tower architectures to retrieve query-relevant documents. Due to online deployment requirements, existing real-world dense retrieval systems mainly enhance performance by designing negative sampling strategies, overlooking the advantages of scaling up. Recently, Large Language Models (LLMs) have exhibited superior performance that can be leveraged for scaling up dense retrieval. However, scaling up retrieval models significantly increases online query latency. To address this challenge, we propose ScalingNote, a two-stage method to exploit the scaling potential of LLMs for retrieval while maintaining online query latency. The first stage is training dual towers, both initialized from the same LLM, to unlock the potential of LLMs for dense retrieval. Then, we distill only the query tower using mean squared error loss and cosine similarity to reduce online costs. Through theoretical analysis and comprehensive offline and online experiments, we show the effectiveness and efficiency of ScalingNote. Our two-stage scaling method outperforms end-to-end models and verifies the scaling law of dense retrieval with LLMs in industrial scenarios, enabling cost-effective scaling of dense retrieval systems. Our online method incorporating ScalingNote significantly enhances the relevance between retrieved documents and queries.

Numerous approaches employing various strategies have been developed to test the graphical user interfaces (GUIs) of mobile apps. However, traditional GUI testing techniques, such as random and model-based testing, primarily focus on generating test sequences that excel in achieving high code coverage but often fail to act as effective test oracles for non-crash functional (NCF) bug detection. To tackle these limitations, this study empirically investigates the capability of leveraging large language models (LLMs) to be test oracles to detect NCF bugs in Android apps. Our intuition is that the training corpora of LLMs, encompassing extensive mobile app usage and bug report descriptions, enable them with the domain knowledge relevant to NCF bug detection. We conducted a comprehensive empirical study to explore the effectiveness of LLMs as test oracles for detecting NCF bugs in Android apps on 71 well-documented NCF bugs. The results demonstrated that LLMs achieve a 49% bug detection rate, outperforming existing tools for detecting NCF bugs in Android apps. Additionally, by leveraging LLMs to be test oracles, we successfully detected 24 previously unknown NCF bugs in 64 Android apps, with four of these bugs being confirmed or fixed. However, we also identified limitations of LLMs, primarily related to performance degradation, inherent randomness, and false positives. Our study highlights the potential of leveraging LLMs as test oracles for Android NCF bug detection and suggests directions for future research.

Referring expression comprehension (REC) is a vision-language task to locate a target object in an image based on a language expression. Fully fine-tuning general-purpose pre-trained vision-language foundation models for REC yields impressive performance but becomes increasingly costly. Parameter-efficient transfer learning (PETL) methods have shown strong performance with fewer tunable parameters. However, directly applying PETL to REC faces two challenges: (1) insufficient multi-modal interaction between pre-trained vision-language foundation models, and (2) high GPU memory usage due to gradients passing through the heavy vision-language foundation models. To this end, we present M$^2$IST: Multi-Modal Interactive Side-Tuning with M$^3$ISAs: Mixture of Multi-Modal Interactive Side-Adapters. During fine-tuning, we fix the pre-trained uni-modal encoders and update M$^3$ISAs to enable efficient vision-language alignment for REC. Empirical results reveal that M$^2$IST achieves better performance-efficiency trade-off than full fine-tuning and other PETL methods, requiring only 2.11% tunable parameters, 39.61% GPU memory, and 63.46% training time while maintaining competitive performance. Autoregressive decoding strategy is a commonly used method for text generation tasks with pre-trained language models, while early-exiting is an effective approach to speedup the inference stage. In this work, we propose a novel decoding strategy named Hierarchical Skip Decoding (HSD) for efficient autoregressive text generation. Different from existing methods that require additional trainable components, HSD is a plug-and-play method applicable to autoregressive text generation models, it adaptively skips decoding layers in a hierarchical manner based on the current sequence length, thereby reducing computational workload and allocating computation resources. Comprehensive experiments on five text generation datasets with pre-trained language models demonstrate HSD's advantages in balancing efficiency and text quality. With almost half of the layers skipped, HSD can sustain 90% of the text quality compared to vanilla autoregressive decoding, outperforming the competitive approaches.

In this paper, an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-and-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted two-way amplify-and-forward (AF) relay network in maritime Internet of Things (IoT) is proposed, where ship1 ($\text{S}_1$) and ship2 ($\text{S}_2$) can be viewed as data collecting centers. To enhance the message exchange rate between $\text{S}_1$ and $\text{S}_2$, a problem of maximizing minimum rate is cast, where the variables, namely AF relay beamforming matrix and IRS phase shifts of two time slots, need to be optimized. To achieve a maximum rate, a low-complexity alternately iterative (AI) scheme based on zero forcing and successive convex approximation (LC-ZF-SCA) algorithm is presented. To obtain a significant rate enhancement, a high-performance AI method based on one step, semidefinite programming and penalty SCA (ONS-SDP-PSCA) is proposed. Simulation results show that by the proposed LC-ZF-SCA and ONS-SDP-PSCA methods, the rate of the IRS-and-UAV-assisted AF relay network surpass those of with random phase and only AF relay networks. Moreover, ONS-SDP-PSCA perform better than LC-ZF-SCA in aspect of rate.

The increasing size of language models raises great research interests in parameter-efficient fine-tuning such as LoRA that freezes the pre-trained model, and injects small-scale trainable parameters for multiple downstream tasks (e.g., summarization, question answering and translation). To further enhance the efficiency of fine-tuning, we propose a framework that integrates LoRA and structured layer pruning. The integrated framework is validated on two created deidentified medical report summarization datasets based on MIMIC-IV-Note and two public medical dialogue datasets. By tuning 0.6% parameters of the original model and pruning over 30% Transformer-layers, our framework can reduce 50% of GPU memory usage and speed up 100% of the training phase, while preserving over 92% generation qualities on free-text sequence-to-sequence tasks.

This study presents three deidentified large medical text datasets, named DISCHARGE, ECHO and RADIOLOGY, which contain 50K, 16K and 378K pairs of report and summary that are derived from MIMIC-III, respectively. We implement convincing baselines of automated abstractive summarization on the proposed datasets with pre-trained encoder-decoder language models, including BERT2BERT, T5-large and BART. Further, based on the BART model, we leverage the sampled summaries from the train set as prior knowledge guidance, for encoding additional contextual representations of the guidance with the encoder and enhancing the decoding representations in the decoder. The experimental results confirm the improvement of ROUGE scores and BERTScore made by the proposed method, outperforming the larger model T5-large.
