Abstract Background Periodontitis was reported to be associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, the association between them has not been firmly established in the existing literature. Therefore, this meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the relationship between periodontitis and IBD. Methods Electronic databases were searched for publications up to August 1, 2019 to include all eligible studies. The pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were estimated to determine the association between periodontal disease and IBD using a random or fixed effects model according to heterogeneity. Results Six eligible studies involving 599 IBD patients and 448 controls were included. The pooled OR between periodontitis and IBD was 3.17 (95% CI: 2.09–4.8) with no heterogeneity observed (I 2 = 0.00%). The pooled ORs were 3.64 (95% CI: 2.33–5.67) and 5.37 (95% CI: 3.30–8.74) for the associations between periodontitis and the two sub-categories of IBD, Crohn’ s disease and ulcerative colitis, respectively. Conclusions The results demonstrated that periodontitis was significantly associated with IBD. However, the mechanisms underlying periodontitis and IBD development are undetermined. Further studies are needed to elucidate this relationship.

Abstract Background Although triptorelin is increasingly used in China for biochemical castration, its effects on primary prostate cancer symptoms remain unclear. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in Chinese prostate cancer patients and the effectiveness of triptorelin on LUTS. Methods In this 48-week multicenter, non-interventional, prospective study, we enrolled patients with locally advanced or metastatic prostate cancer. Patients received triptorelin (15 mg) intramuscularly at baseline and at weeks 12, 24, and 36 with symptom assessment using the International Prostate Symptoms Score (IPSS). The primary endpoints were the prevalence of LUTS at baseline per IPSS categories and the percentage of patients with moderate to severe LUTS (IPSS > 7) at baseline, having at least a 3-point reduction of IPSS score at week 48. Results A total of 398 patients were included; 211 (53.0%) and 160 (40.2%) among them had severe and moderate LUTS, respectively. Of the patients with IPSS scores available at baseline and at week 48 (n = 213), 81.2% achieved a reduction in IPSS of at least 3 points. Of the patients with moderate to severe LUTS at baseline and IPSS scores available at baseline and at week 48 (n = 194), 86.6% achieved a total IPSS reduction of at least 3 points. Conclusions The vast majority of Chinese patients with locally advanced or metastatic prostate cancer scheduled to receive triptorelin as part of their standard treatment have severe or moderate LUTS. Triptorelin therapy resulted in sustained improvement of LUTS in these patients.

The insect chemosensory system is pivotal for interactions with their environments, and moths have especially sensitive olfaction. Exploration of the connection between the plasticity of olfactory-guided and molecular level pathways in insects is important for understanding the olfactory recognition mechanisms of insects. The pine caterpillar moth, Dendrolimus punctatus Walker, is a dominant conifer defoliator in China, and mating is the priority for adults of this species, during which sex pheromone recognition and oviposition site location are the main activities; these activities are all closely related to chemosensory genes. Thus, we aimed to identify chemosensory related genes and monitor the spectrum of their dynamic expression during the entire mating process in D. punctatus. In this study, we generated transcriptome data from male and female adult D. punctatus specimens at four mating stages: eclosion, calling, copulation, and post-coitum. These data were analyzed using bioinformatics tools to identify the major olfactory-related gene families and determine their expression patterns during mating. Levels of odorant binding proteins (OBPs), chemosensory proteins (CSPs), and odorant receptors (ORs) were closely correlated with mating behavior. Comparison with ORs from other Dendrolimus and Lepidoptera species led to the discovery of a group of ORs specific to Dendrolimus. Furthermore, we identified several genes encoding OBPs and ORs that were upregulated after mating in females; these genes may mediate the location of host plants for oviposition via plant-emitted volatiles. This work will facilitate functional research into D. punctatus chemosensory genes, provide information about the relationship between chemosensory genes and important physiological activities, and promote research into the mechanisms underlying insect olfactory recognition.

Dendrolimus punctatus Walker is a serious pest affecting conifers in southern China. As extensive pesticide spraying is currently required to control D. punctatus, new control strategies are urgently needed. Chemosensory genes represent potential molecular targets for development of alternative pest control strategies, and the expression characteristics of these genes provide an indication of their function. To date, little information is available regarding chemosensory genes in D. punctatus or their expression profiles at different development stages and in various tissues. Here, we assembled and analyzed the transcriptomes of D. punctatus collected at different developmental stages and in a range of organs, using next-generation sequencing. A total of 171 putative chemosensory genes were identified, encoding 53 odorant binding proteins, 26 chemosensory proteins, 60 odorant receptors (OR), 12 gustatory receptors (GR), 18 ionotropic receptors (IR), and 2 sensory neuron membrane proteins (SNMPs). Expression analysis indicated that the antennae possess the largest number of highly expressed olfactory genes and that olfactory gene expression patterns in the eggs, larvae, and head were similar to one another, with each having moderate numbers of highly expressed olfactory genes. Fat body, ovary, midgut, and testis tissues also had similar olfactory gene expression patterns, including few highly expressed olfactory genes. Of particular note, we identified only two pheromone binding proteins and no pheromone receptors in D. punctatus, similar to our previous findings in Dendrolimus houi and Dendrolimus kikuchii, suggesting that insects of the Dendrolimus genus have different pheromone recognition characteristics to other Lepidopteran insects. Overall, this extensive expression profile analysis provides a clear map of D. punctatus chemosensory genes, and will facilitate functional studies and the development of new pest control methods in the future.

Background: Lung Adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is the leading cause of death from lung cancer. Cuproptosis is the latest discovered way of programmed cell death, and Cuproptosis-Related Gene (CRG) is associated with the risk of LUAD. At present, there are few research of LUAD and Cuproptosis focuses on Long non-coding RNA (LncRNA). As genomics advances, LncRNA emerges as a potential target for understanding tumor progression and prognosis, offering prospects for biological targeted therapy. Therefore, this study provides new biomarkers and therapeutic targets for LUAD from the perspective of LncRNA. Methods: Gene expression, clinical outcome and gene mutation data of LUAD patients were downloaded from TCGA database. Spearman correlation was used to analyze the correlation between LncRNA and CRG. Univariate Cox, multivariate Cox and LASSO Cox regression analysis were used to construct a prognostic model of Cuproptosis-LncRNAs. GO and KEGG enrichment and immune function analysis were performed on differentially expressed genes between different risk groups. Then, immune escape analysis was performed on LUAD patients with different TIDE score. Finally, drug sensitivity analysis was performed on these differentially expressed genes. Results: A total of 2244 Cuproptosis-LncRNAs were found. Through the application of univariate Cox regression analysis, multivariate Cox regression analysis, and LASSO Cox regression analysis, a prognostic model was developed, integrating 15 Cuproptosis-LncRNAs to assess the risk of mortality. Following that, the model underwent assessment through risk score analysis, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, risk distribution, and evaluation of survival outcomes. The results revealed an AUC value of 0.755 for the model, surpassing the AUC of other clinical pathological features. The results of KEGG analysis showed that the differentially expressed genes in different model groups were mainly involved in Amoebiasis, Fat digestion and absorption, and other signaling pathways. The results of TMB showed that the prognostic model of TMB combined with risk score could well evaluate the prognosis of patients. The TIDE scores did not exhibit a notable distinction between the two risk models. Analysis of drug sensitivity revealed that individuals in the low-risk category demonstrated greater responsiveness to 5-Fluorouracil, Axitinib, Bexarotene, and other drugs compared to those in the high-risk group. Conclusion: Our research offers a valuable reference for predicting the prognosis of LUAD, contributing to a better understanding of the future elucidation of the process and mechanism of Cuproptosis-LncRNAs in LUAD. Background: Prior research has established a strong link between cerebral aneurysm (CA) occurrence and inflammation. Tea intake (TI) has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties through multiple mechanisms, potentially lowering CA incidence. This study aims to employ Mendelian Randomization (MR) methodology to explore the genetic causality between TI and CA. Methods: We collected Genome-wide association study (GWAS) data for CA, TI, Green tea intake (GTI), Herbal tea intake (HTI), and Rooibos tea intake (RTI). The MR analysis employed the TwoSampleMR package and utilized the inverse variance-weighted (IVW) method. Results: The findings suggest no genetic causal relationship between TI and CA (IVW: OR = 1.10, 95% CI: 0.59--2.05, P = 0.772). Similarly, there is no genetic causal association between GTI and CA (IVW: OR = 1.07, 95% CI: 0.91--1.26, P = 0.388), HTI and CA (IVW: OR = 1.00, 95% CI: 0.89--1.13, P = 0.943), or RTI and CA (IVW: OR = 1.02, 95% CI: 0.96--1.09, P = 0.472). Conclusion: There is no genetic causal relationship between TI and CA, and the different types of tea do not change this result. Further MR analysis is needed to investigate whether there is a potential genetic causal association between the quantity of TI and CA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bark beetles and their associated fungi, which cause forest decline and sometimes high mortality in large areas around the world, are of increasing concern in terms of forest health. Three Tomicus spp. (T. brevipilosus, T. minor and T. yunnanensis) infect branches and trunks of Pinus yunnanensis and P. kesiya in Yunnan Province, in south-western China. Tomicus spp. are well known as vectors of ophiostomatoid fungi and their co-occurrence could result in serious ecological and economic impact on local forest ecosystems. Nonetheless, knowledge about their diversity, ecology, including pathogenicity and potential economic importance is still quite rudimentary. Therefore, an extensive survey of ophiostomatoid fungi associated with these Tomicus species infesting P. yunnanensis and P. kesiya was carried out in Yunnan. Seven hundred and seventy-two strains of ophiostomatoid fungi were isolated from the adult beetles and their galleries. The strains were identified based on comparisons of multiple DNA sequences, including the nuclear ribosomal large subunit (LSU) region, the internal transcribed spacer regions 1 and 2, together with the intervening 5.8S gene (ITS) and the partial genes of ß-tubulin (TUB2), elongation factor 1a (TEF1-a) and calmodulin (CAL). Phylogenetic analyses were performed using maximum parsimony (MP) as well as maximum likelihood (ML). Combinations of culture features, morphological characters and temperature-dependent growth rates were also employed for species identification. Eleven species belonging to five genera were identified. These included six known species, Esteya vermicola, Leptographium yunnanense, Ophiostoma brevipilosi, O. canum, O. minus and O. tingens and four novel taxa, described as Graphilbum anningense, O. aggregatum, Sporothrix pseudoabietina and S. macroconidia. A residual strain was left unidentified as Ophiostoma sp. 1. The overall ophiostomatoid community was by far dominated by three species, representing 87.3% of the total isolates; in decreasing order, these were O. canum, O. brevipilosi and O. minus. Furthermore, the ophiostomatoid community of each beetle, although harbouring a diversity of ophiostomatoid species, was differentially dominated by a single fungal species; Ophiostoma canum was preferentially associated with and dominated the ophiostomatoid community of T. minor, whereas O. brevipilosi and O. minus were exclusively associated with and dominated the ophiostomatoid communities of T. brevipilosus and T. yunnanensis, respectively. Eight additional species, representing the remaining 12.7% of the total isolates, were marginal or sporadic. These results suggested that sympatric Tomicus populations are dominated by distinct species showing some level of specificity or even exclusivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
