Abstract

Optical skyrmions are an emerging class of structured light with sophisticated particle-like topologies with great potential for revolutionizing modern informatics. However, the current generation of optical skyrmions involves complex or bulky systems, hindering their development of practical applications. Here, exploiting the emergent "lab-on-fiber" technology, we demonstrate the design of a metafiber-integrated photonic skyrmion generator. We not only successfully generated high-quality optical skyrmions from metafibers, but also experimentally verified their remarkable properties, such as regulability and topological stability with deep-subwavelength features beyond the diffraction limits. Our flexible and fiber-integrated optical skyrmions platform paves the avenue for future applications of topologically-enhanced remote super-resolution microscopy and super-robust information transfer.

Abstract

The integration of two-dimensional (2D) materials with photonic structures has catalyzed a wide spectrum of optical and optoelectronic applications. Conventional nanophotonic structures generally lack efficient reconfigurability and multifunctionality. The atomically thin 2D van der Waals materials can thus infuse new functionality and reconfigurability to the well-established library of photonic structures such as integrated waveguides, optical fibers, photonic crystals, micro-cavities, and metasurface, to name a few. Thanks to the handiness of van der Waals interfaces, the 2D materials can be easily transferred and mixed with other prefabricated photonic templates with high degrees of freedom, and can act as the optical gain, modulation, sensing, or plasmonic media for diverse applications. Here we review recent advents on combining 2D materials to nanophotonic structures for new functionality development or performance enhancements. Challenges and emerging opportunities in integrating van der Waals building blocks beyond 2D materials are also discussed., Comment: 23 pages

3. On the initiation of fiber fuse damage in high-power ytterbium-doped fiber lasers

Abstract

Fiber fuse effect can occur spontaneously and propagate along optical fibers to cause wide-spread damage; it threatens all applications involving optical fibers. This paper presents two results. First, it establishes that the initiation of fiber fuse (IFF) in silica fibers is caused by defect-induced absorption. Critical temperatures and critical optical powers for IFF are simulated for the first time using a 3D solid-state heat transfer model with heat source generated by defect-induced absorption. In this method, formation energies of the defects can be uniquely determined, which offers critical information on the chemical reasons for fiber fuse. Second, this paper offers a method to evaluate operating temperatures of fiber lasers. General analytical solutions of the operating temperatures along gain fibers are deduced. Results of 976-nm laser-diode-(LD)-pumped and 1018-nm tandem-pumped ytterbium-doped fiber (YDF) amplifiers using 10/130-{\mu}m YDFs are calculated. Abstract

Metasurfaces have achieved fruitful results in tailoring complexing light fields in free space. However, a systematic investigation on applying the concept of meta-optics to completely control waveguide modes is still elusive. Here we present a comprehensive catalog capable of selectively and exclusively excite almost arbitrary high-order waveguide modes of interest, leveraging silicon metasurface-patterned silicon nitride waveguides. By simultaneously engineering the phase-matched gradient of the metasurface and the vectorial spatial modal overlap between the nanoantenna near-field and target waveguide mode for excitation, either single or multiple high-order modes are successfully launched with high purity reaching 98% and broad bandwidth. Moreover, on-chip twisted light generators are also theoretically demonstrated with configurable OAM topological charge \ell from -3 to +2, serving as a comprehensive framework for metasurface-enabled guided mode optics and motivating further applications such as versatile integrated couplers, demultiplexers, and mode-division multiplexing-based communication systems., Comment: 'Yuan Meng' and 'Tiantian He' contributed equally to this work

Abstract

The realization of beam self‐cleaning in a cavity is more challenging than in the outside cavity. The peak power of intracavity pulses needs to be high to reach the threshold of beam self‐cleaning, which usually relies on additional diffraction grating to compress pulses in a positive‐dispersion cavity. Here, it is first experimentally and numerically demonstrated that self‐cleaning can be observed in an all‐fiber high peak‐power Er‐doped spatiotemporal mode‐locked (STML) laser at all‐negative‐dispersion. Through the nonlinear compression of graded‐index multimode fiber, the pulses are compressed along with the emergence of beam self‐cleaning. Besides, the inherent disorder of multimode fiber accelerates the self‐cleaning process. The intracavity pulse energy of ≈13 nJ with a pulse duration of 734.5 fs is derived under a highly multimode excitation, with an output pulse energy of 2.33 nJ. The pulse energy is a nearly fourfold improvement over the previous report in all‐fiber STML at 1.5 μ$\umu$m. Temporal‐dependent characteristics and nonlinear polarization dynamics of beam self‐cleaning are also experimentally uncovered. It is demonstrated that the STML fiber laser will enable new insights into nonlinear pulse propagation in cavities and related applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The stromal niche plays a pivotal role in AML chemoresistance and energy metabolism reprogramming is a hallmark of a tumor. 5′‐Adenosine monophosphate‐activated protein kinase (AMPK) is an important energy sensor suppressing mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) activity. However, the role of AMPK‐mTORC1 pathway on connecting AML cell energy metabolism reprogramming and chemoresistance induced by the bone marrow microenvironment (BMM) is not defined. Here, with a co‐culture system that simulates the interaction between BMM and AML cells, it is shown that stromal contact led to a decreased sensitivity to chemotherapy accompanied by an increase of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) activity and mitochondrial ATP synthesis in AML cells. The increased OXPHOS activity and excessive ATP production promoted chemoresistance of AML cells through inhibiting AMPK activity and in turn activating mTORC1 activity. In an in vivo AML mouse model, depletion of AMPK activity with genetic targeting promoted AML progression and reduced their sensitivity to chemotherapeutic drugs. Collectively, AML cells' acquired increased OXPHOS activity as well as AMPK inhibition could be therapeutically exploited in an effort to overcome BMM‐mediated chemoresistance.
