1. The admission pH is a risk factor of preoperative deep vein thrombosis in geriatric hip fracture: a retrospective cohort study

Abstract

Abstract This study evaluated the association between body pH value and preoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in geriatric hip fractures. Older adult patients with hip fractures were screened between January 2015 and September 2019. The demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients were collected. Multivariate binary logistic regression and generalized additive models were used to identify the linear and nonlinear associations between pH value and preoperative DVT. Analyses were performed using EmpowerStats and R software. A total of 1465 patients were included in the study. DVT occurred in 476 (32.6%) of these admitted older adults. We observed a nonlinear association between the serum pH value and preoperative DVT in geriatric patients with hip fractures. A pH value of 7.39 was the inflection point in the curve, with pH highly correlated with DVT at pH 7.39, pH was not correlated with DVT (OR 1.26; 95% CI 0.85–1.86; P = 0.2561), the odds of DVT did not vary with pH, and the highest risk of thrombosis was reached. The body pH value is nonlinearly associated with preoperative DVT in geriatric patients with hip fractures, and it could be considered a predictor of the risk of DVT. 2. The associations between prenatal phthalate exposure and childhood glycolipid metabolism and blood pressure: An updated systematic review and a pilot meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies

Abstract

This is the first pilot meta-analysis on the association of prenatal phthalate exposure with childhood cardiometabolic risks. A systematic literature search was performed in MEDLINE, Web of Science and CNKI (Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure) until June 5, 2023. A total of seven studies with 5746 children (2646 girls and 3100 boys) were finally included. Four, three and two studies investigated the effects of maternal phthalate exposure on childhood blood pressure (BP), blood lipids and blood glucose profiles, respectively. The pilot meta-analysis suggested that di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) metabolite exposure was associated with a decrease in childhood z-systolic BP (SBP, β = −0.169, 95% CI = −0.338–0.001). Furthermore, the pooled results showed negative relationships of prenatal ∑DEHP exposure with z-SBP (β = −0.109, 95% CI = −0.163 to −0.055) and z-diastolic BP (DBP, β = −0.126, 95% CI = −0.182 to −0.069) in girls. In addition, MEP exposure was associated with z-SBP in girls (β = −0.227, 95% CI = −0.387 to −0.066). The pooled result showed a positive relationship between prenatal ∑DEHP exposure and triglycerides (β = 0.103, 95% CI = 0.028–0.178). The overall results revealed that exposure to ∑DEHP throughout gestation was associated with a decrease in insulin (β = −0.074, 95% CI = −0.144 to −0.004) and glucose (β = −0.129, 95% CI = −0.199 to −0.058) in boys. Interestingly, there was an inverse relationship of prenatal mono− 3 −carboxypropyl phthalate (MCPP) exposure with glucose in pubertal boys (β = −3.749, 95% CIs = −6.758 to −0.741) but not found in postpubertal children. In conclusion, prenatal phthalate exposure interfered with cardiovascular risk in children with gender-specific differences and was influenced by puberty. Overall, prenatal ∑DEHP was negatively associated with systolic blood pressure in girls and with insulin and glucose in boys but increased the level of triglycerides.

Abstract

A novel wavelength modulated optical fiber-based symmetrical long-range surface plasmon resonance (sLRSPR) biosensor with high quality factor (Q-F) of 56.70 RIU−1 and temperature self-reference was proposed and demonstrated. The multilayered architecture of the sLRSPR biosensor consisted of cladding/dielectric-buffer-layer (DBL)/Au-nanofilm/DBL/analyte, and the DBLs on both sides of the Au-nanofilm were identical, which greatly increased the matching degree of the permittivities of analyte and the DBL near cladding and reduced the loss of long-range surface plasmon-polaritons. Therefore, the sLRSPR sensor displayed excellent sensing performance, and its Q-F was 3.27-folds higher than that of the conventional SPR sensor. Furthermore, the sLRSPR sensor was employed as a biosensor for the measurement of average refractive index (RI) of cell, and the temperature-sensitive optical adsorption characteristic of the DBL was utilized to provide temperature self-reference for the RI measurement. The sLRSPR biosensor realized simultaneous measurement of RI and temperature at the exactly same location, which can eliminate the measurement error introduced by temperature to RI measurement. The sLRSPR biosensor proposed in this paper possessed higher detection precision and presented greatly promising application prospects in the field of biochemistry.

Abstract

In this paper, we have fabricated and characterized a bimetallic optical fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor, followed by molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets have been coated on the surface of metal film. The performance of the sensor is discussed in terms of the sensitivity and the figure of merit (FOM) theoretically and experimentally. The effect of different thickness of Au/Ag film on the performance of the sensor was studied. The results indicate that the FOM of sensor with silver film is much higher than that with gold film, although gold film is conducive to the sensitivity improvement. Two types of sensors are fabricated, which are the sensor with silver layer and the sensor with bimetallic layers of silver and gold. The sensitivity of the sensor with silver film and the sensor with bimetallic layers are 2141 nm/RIU and 2487 nm/RIU, respectively; and the FOM values are 19.44 RIU−1 and 18.47 RIU−1, respectively. Then, it is theoretically confirmed that MoS2 has the potential to promote the sensitivity of SPR sensor, and the sensitivity is tuned by the number of layers of MoS2 nanosheets. MoS2 nanosheets successfully bridged the gold film with the help of chemical bonds. The sensitivity of the sensor with MoS2 nanosheets is 3061 nm/RIU, and its FOM value is 23.29 RIU−1.

6. [Expression of Vitamin D receptor in the myocardium of mice with viral myocarditis]

Abstract

To investigate the dynamic expression and role of vitamin D receptor (VDR) in the myocardium of mice with viral myocarditis (VMC).One hundred and twenty 4-week-old male BALB/c mice were selected and assigned into control (n=40) and experimental groups (n=80). The mice in the experimental group were injected intraperitoneally with Coxsackievirus B3 to establish the model of VMC, while the mice in the control group were injected intraperitoneally with an equal volume of DMEM solution. Fifteen mice in the experimental group and ten mice in the control group were sacrificed at 3, 7, 14, or 28 days after injection, and the myocardial specimens were obtained. The dynamic expression of VDR in the myocardium was determined by the immunohistochemical technique. The pathological changes in the myocardium were examined using hematoxylin and eosin staining.In the experimental group, the mice had significantly increased expression of VDR after virus injection (P0.01); the expression of VDR reached the peak at 7 days after injection, and then declined gradually; the expression of VDR remained high at 28 days after injection. At 3, 7, 14, and 28 days after injection, the expression of VDR in the experimental group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P0.01). Moreover, in the experimental group, the changes in the pathological score of the myocardium were in accordance with the changes in the expression of VDR; the expression level of VDR in the myocardium was positively correlated with the pathological changes in the myocardium in the experimental group (P0.01).VDR may be involved in the inflammatory-immune process in the pathogenesis of VMC.
