This paper combines empirical observations, kinematic analysis, and numerical simulation to investigate slope failure susceptibility, with practical implications for regional infrastructure projects. Six slopes along the R37 road were analyzed to assess the impact of strata orientation and water presence on slope stability. The results indicate that various factors interact to destabilize the mechanical integrity of both rock and soil materials. Dry slopes were found to be less vulnerable to failure, although geological conditions remained influential. Numerical modeling using FLACSlope (version 8.1) revealed that the factor of safety (FoS) decreases as the water presence increases, highlighting the critical need for effective drainage solutions. Kinematic analysis, incorporating DIPS modeling and toppling charts, identified toppling as the most likely failure mode, with a 90% susceptibility rate, followed by planar and wedge failures at 6% and less than 5%, respectively. These findings are validated by the observed slope conditions and empirical data. Planar failures were often remnants of both sliding and toppling failures. Given the significant risk posed to road infrastructure, particularly where FoS hovers just above the stability threshold, this study emphasizes the importance of proactive, long-term slope monitoring and early mitigation strategies to prevent catastrophic failures. The results can guide infrastructure design and maintenance, ensuring safer and more resilient roadways in regions prone to slope instability. Nonetheless, the use of sophisticated slope stability modeling techniques is recommended for a thorough understanding of the mechanical dynamics of the slope material, and for catering to the shortfalls of the techniques applied in this paper. Rill swell (RS) events are outflows of dry, fine-grained material mainly observed at drawpoints in cave mining. These events can negatively affect production and have fatal consequences. Unfortunately, comprehensive studies analyzing these events are lacking. This paper uses the discrete element method to study RS events. With this method, a numerical model was constructed and calibrated based on an RS event recorded in Ridgeway Deeps Block Cave. Drawpoint geometries, material properties, and the initial mass of the fine material were then analyzed. The results show that both the brow beam height and drawpoint width had a noticeable influence on the RS magnitude, mainly on the tonnage of the flow and the distance reached by coarse particles dragged into the extraction drift. While the mass of fine material is crucial to the magnitude of RS events, results suggest that narrowing drawpoint width and/or increasing brow beam height can mitigate the impact of RS events. When modelling the anchorage performance of rebars with the tri-linear law, the calculation process of the load–deformation relation is complicated. The reason is that when the rebar–grout interface entered the elastic–softening–debonding stage, the softening section length and debonding section length vary simultaneously. To solve this issue, this paper proposes an enhanced numerical calculation method. When the rebar–grout interface entered the elastic–softening–debonding stage, the softening section length was fixed to a specific value. One loop function was created to calculate the debonding section length. With this method, the number of iteration calculations significantly decreased. The credibility of this calculation method was confirmed with experimental results. Two case studies were conducted to compare the load–deformation relation obtained with the original calculation method and enhanced calculation method. The results showed that good consistency existed between the results obtained by those two methods. This finding can significantly improve the calculation efficiency when studying the anchorage performance of rebars. Due to the intricate and volatile nature of the service environment surrounding prestressing anchoring materials, stress corrosion poses a significant challenge to the sustained stability of underground reinforcement systems. Consequently, it is imperative to identify effective countermeasures against stress corrosion failure in cable bolts within deep underground environments, thereby ensuring the safety of deep resource extraction processes. In this study, the influence of various coatings on the stress corrosion resistance of cable bolts was meticulously examined and evaluated using specifically designed stress-corrosion-testing systems. The specimens were subjected to loading using four-point bending frames and exposed to simulated underground corrosive environments. A detailed analysis and comparison of the failure patterns and mechanisms of specimens coated with different materials were conducted through the meticulous observation of fractographic features. The results revealed stark differences in the stress corrosion behavior of coated and uncoated bolts. Notably, epoxy coatings and chlorinated rubber coatings exhibited superior anti-corrosion capabilities. Conversely, galvanized layers demonstrated the weakest effect due to their sacrificial anti-corrosion mechanism. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the coatings was found to be closely linked to the curing agent and additives used. The findings provide valuable insights for the design and selection of coatings that can enhance the durability and reliability of cable bolts in deep underground environments. The aerospace industry is imposing increasingly strict dimensional tolerances, which is forcing continuous development in component manufacturing. Ensuring tight dimensional tolerances is difficult for thin-walled structures due to their reduced stiffness, which are increasingly used in the aerospace industry, where titanium alloys and nickel alloys, among others, dominate. Developments in this area are causing a search for machining conditions that provide sufficient quality characteristics including dimensional and shape accuracy. We discuss, herewith, thin wall deformations in the horizontal orientation of Inconel 625 nickel alloy samples in cross-sections perpendicular and parallel to the direction of tool feed motion. We measured dimensional and shape accuracy using a 3D optical scanner and also using a coordinate measuring machine to correlate these results. We compared the results obtained by the two methods and obtained the maximum discrepancy of the results equal to around 8%. Samples made with adaptive cylindrical milling had similar values of thin wall deviations, with the smallest deviations observed for the sample made with the tool for high-performance machining using adaptive cylindrical milling. This paper discusses the pull-out laboratory tests and the monitoring of expansion-shell bolts with a length of 1.82 m. The bolts comprised the KE-3W expansion shell, a rod with a diameter of 0.0183 m and a profiled, circular plate with a diameter of 0.14 m, and a gauge of 0.006 m. The bolts were installed in a concrete block with a compressive strength of 75 MPa. The tests were conducted on a state-of-the-art test stand owned by the Department of Underground Mining of the AGH University of Science and Technology. The test stand can be used to test roof bolts on a geometric scale of 1:1 under static and rapidly varying loads. Also, the stand is suitable for testing rods measuring 5.5 m in length. The stand has a special feature of providing the ongoing monitoring of bolt load, displacement and deformation. The primary aim of the study was to compare the results recorded by two different measurement systems with the innovative Self-Excited Acoustic System (SAS) for measuring stress variations in roof bolts. In order to use the SAS, a special handle equipped with an accelerometer and exciter mounted to the nut or the upset end of the rod was designed at the Faculties of Mining and Geoengineering and Mechanical Engineering and Robotics of the AGH University of Science and Technology. The SAS can be used for nondestructive evaluation of performance of bolts around mining workings and in tunnels. Through laboratory calibration tests, roof bolt loads can be assessed using the in-situ non-destructive method.

Titanium and nickel alloys are used in the creation of components exposed to harsh and variable operating conditions. Such components include thin-walled structures with a variety of shapes created using milling. The driving factors behind the use of thin-walled components include the desire to reduce the weight of the structures and reduce the costs, which can sometimes be achieved by reducing the machining time. This situation necessitates, among other things, the use of new machining methods and/or better machining parameters. The available tools, geometrically designed for different strategies, allow working with similar and improved cutting parameters (increased cutting speeds or higher feed rates) without jeopardizing the necessary quality of finished products. This approach causes undesirable phenomena, such as the appearance of vibrations during machining, which adversely affect the surface quality including the surface roughness. A search is underway for cutting parameters that will minimize the vibration while meeting the quality requirements. Therefore, researching and evaluating the impact of cutting conditions are justified and common in scientific studies. In our work, we have focused on the quality characteristics of horizontal thin-walled structures from Ti6Al4V titanium alloys obtained in the milling process. Our experiments were conducted under controlled cutting conditions at a constant value of the material removal rate (2.03 cm3⁄min), while an increased value of the cut layer was used and tested for use in finishing machining. We used three different cutting tools, namely, one for general purpose machining, one for high-performance machining, and one for high-speed machining. Two strategies were adopted: adaptive face milling and adaptive cylindrical milling. The output quantities included the results of acceleration vibration amplitudes, and selected surface topography parameters of waviness (Wa and Wz) and roughness (Ra and Rz). The lowest values of the pertinent quantities were found for a sample machined with a high-performance tool using adaptive face milling. In the underground mines of the Legnica–Głogów Copper District (LGOM) the main way to protect the room excavation is the use of a rock bolt support. For many years, it has proven to be an efficient security measure in excavations which met all safety standards and requirements. The article presents the consumption of the rock bolt support in the Mining Department “Polkowice–Sieroszowice” in the years 2010–2015 as well as the number of bolt supports that were used to secure the excavations. In addition, it shows the percentage of bolt supports that were used to conduct rebuilding work and cover the surface of exposed roofs. One of the factors contributing to the loss of the functionality of bolt supports is corrosion whose occurrence may lead directly to a reduction in the diameter of rock bolt support parts, in particular rods, bearing plates and nuts. The phenomenon of the corrosion of the bolt support and its elements in underground mining is an extremely common phenomenon due to the favorable conditions for its development in mines, namely high temperature and humidity, as well as the presence of highly aggressive water. This involves primarily a decrease in the capacity of bolt support construction, which entails the need for its strengthening, and often the need to perform the reconstruction of the excavation.

The basic type of rock mass reinforcement method for both preparatory and operational workings in underground metal ore mines, both in Poland and in different countries across the world, is the expansion shell or adhesive-bonded rock bolt. The article discusses results of static loading test of the expansion shell rock bolts equipped with originally developed deformable component. This component consists of two profiled rock bolt washers, two disk springs, and three guide bars. The disk spring and disk washer material differs in stiffness. The construction materials ensure that at first the springs under loading are partially compressed, and then the rock bolt washer is plastically deformed. The rock bolts tested were installed in blocks simulating a rock mass with rock compressive strength of 80 MPa. The rock bolt was loaded statically until its ultimate loading capacity was exceeded. The study presents the results obtained under laboratory conditions in the test rig allowing testing of the rock bolts at their natural size, as used in underground metal ore mines. The stress-strain/displacement characteristics of the expansion shell rock bolt with the deformable component were determined experimentally. The relationships between the geometric parameters and specific strains or displacements of the bolt rod were described, and the percentage contribution of those values in total displacements, resulting from the deformation of rock bolt support components (washer, thread) and the expansion shell head displacements, were estimated. The stiffness of the yielded and stiff bolts was empirically determined, including stiffness parameters of every individual part (deformable component, steel rod). There were two phases of displacement observed during the static tension of the rock bolt which differed in their intensity.

The paper presents conceptualization and construction of a composite Balanced Development Index (BDI). Ranking of European OECD member states by BDI are then compared to rankings by Human Development Index (HDI) and Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Significant influences of all these indices on trust in government are subsequently proved and described. Trust in government is influenced by BDI much stronger than by HDI. Poland shows very low trust in government relative to other analyzed states and relative to the level of development. The necessity to use composite indices of socio-economic development instead of purely economic measures like the national income or the gross domestic product, or in addition to them at least, is proved. In underground mining, conventional loader equipment uses diesel as a power source, implying different drawbacks, such as combustion gases, low visibility, worker's health problems, and high ventilation requirements. Thus, hybrid and electric loaders are being developed by the main industry suppliers who prefer clean technology. In this study, we analyzed the performance of an electro-mechanical powertrain through a dynamic model of underground-loader equipment using field data. This electric LHD model was compared to a diesel loader under the same operational conditions. For the case study, the results showed that the proposed electro-mechanical model, considering 14 tons of capacity, consumed 86.8 kWh, representing 60.5% less energy than the diesel loader with similar speed and torque characteristics. Thus, the proposed methodology is a valuable tool for operators, process engineers, and decision-makers, allowing an energy-efficiency evaluation for electric LHD adoption, based on the current operational data available for conventional equipment. The embedment length (EL) of full-grouting rock bolts is a core factor in rock bolt reinforcement. Therefore, understanding the influence of EL on the reinforcement performance of rock bolts benefits the rock reinforcement quality. To realise this purpose, this paper adopted the numerical modelling method. In this numerical modelling method, the structural elements of modified piles were used. The elastic debonding law was incorporated into the modified pile elements to model the debonding behaviour of the surface between rock bolts and grout. The results showed that the sliding of modified pile elements had a marginal influence on the reinforcement performance of rock bolts. Moreover, the EL has a paramount influence on the reinforcement performance of rock bolts. Before the rock bolts reached the largest anchorage force, there was a linear relation between the largest anchorage force and the EL. It was effective to use the linear regression analysis method to predict the critical EL of rock bolts. This finding was also applicable to fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) rock bolts. Additionally, the rock bolt type had a paramount influence on the reinforcement performance of rock bolts.
