1. AuthROS: Secure Data Sharing Among Robot Operating Systems Based on Ethereum

Abstract

The Robot Operating System (ROS) streamlines human processes, increasing the efficiency of various production tasks. However, the security of data transfer operations in ROS is still in its immaturity. Securing data exchange between several robots is a significant problem. This paper proposes \textit{AuthROS}, an Ethereum blockchain-based secure data sharing method, for robot communication. It is a ROS node authorization system capable of ensuring the immutability and security of private data flow between ROS nodes of any size. To ensure data security, AuthROS employs the smart contract for permission granting and identification, SM2-based key exchange, and SM4-based plaintext encryption techniques. In addition, we deploy a data digest upload technique to optimize data query and upload performance. Finally, the experimental findings reveal that AuthROS has strong security, time performance, and node forging in cases where data should be recorded and robots need to remain immobile.

Abstract

With the application of robotics in security monitoring, medical care, image analysis, and other high-privacy fields, vision sensor data in robotic operating systems (ROS) faces the challenge of enhancing secure storage and transmission. Recently, it has been proposed that the distributed advantages of blockchain be taken advantage of to improve the security of data in ROS. Still, it has limitations such as high latency and large resource consumption. To address these issues, this paper introduces PrivShieldROS, an extended robotic operating system developed by InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), blockchain, and HybridABEnc to enhance the confidentiality and security of vision sensor data in ROS. The system takes advantage of the decentralized nature of IPFS to enhance data availability and robustness while combining HybridABEnc for fine-grained access control. In addition, it ensures the security and confidentiality of the data distribution mechanism by using blockchain technology to store data content identifiers (CID) persistently. Finally, the effectiveness of this system is verified by three experiments. Compared with the state-of-the-art blockchain-extended ROS, PrivShieldROS shows improvements in key metrics. Abstract

Robot Operating System (ROS) has received widespread utilization with the development of robotics, self-driving, etc., recently. Meanwhile, the other technology blockchain is frequently applied to various fields with its trustworthy characteristics and immutability in data storage. However, ROS has no ability to interact with the blockchain, which hinders research in related fields. Therefore, we wonder if we can develop a convenient tool to bridge ROS and blockchain. Inspired by this, we propose ROS-Ethereum. It bridges ROS and Ethereum, a widely used blockchain platform. ROS-Ethereum is based on the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) communication mechanism and the SM algorithm family along with Ethereum technology. Simply put, ROS-Ethereum allows users to invoke the contract when interacting with the blockchain, which makes this process easier and safer. We conduct experiments in real robots to verify the effectiveness of ROS-Ethereum and evaluate it from the following metrics: (1) the encryption efficiency and stability of the algorithm and (2) ROS-Ethereum transaction response time and packet loss rate. © 2022 Shenhui Zhang et al.

8. Hunion Traceability: A New Type of Blockchain Traceability System Based on SM2, SM3 and SM4

Abstract

Data traceability with the great serviceability has been widely used in various scenarios. However, the existing traceability mechanism often applies internationally accepted cryptographic algorithms such as MD5 and RSA in the data transmission process. These algorithms have been confirmed to have certain loopholes in security. This paper proposes a traceability system based on SM2, SM3, and SM4 algorithms. We establish a certificate issuance verification mechanism to improve the data transmission security performance of the traceability system based on SM2 and SM3. At the same time, the system uses the SM4 algorithm to design a blockchain interaction scheme using data digest, and uses homomorphic encryption to verify the correctness of the data. In addition, we also replaced the SM2 in the system with the RSA, and the SM3 with the MD5 to test the pros and cons of the two different algorithm systems in terms of security performance and execution efficiency. The test results show that the traceability mechanism based on SM2, SM3, and SM4 performs 1-2 seconds faster than the traceability mechanism based on RSA and MD5 in terms of average transaction response time. At the same time, SM2, SM3, and SM4 also have better security performance. © 2021 ACM.
