Recent observations indicate that >99% of the small bodies in the Solar System reside in its outer reaches --- in the Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud. Kuiper Belt bodies are probably the best preserved representatives of the icy planetesimals that dominated the bulk of the solid mass in the early Solar System. They likely contain preserved materials inherited from the protosolar cloud, held in cryogenic storage since the formation of the Solar System. Despite their importance, they are relatively underrepresented in our extraterrestrial sample collections by many orders of magnitude ($\sim$10$^{13}$ by mass) as compared with the asteroids, represented by meteorites, which are composed of materials that have generally been strongly altered by thermal and aqueous processes. We have only begun to scratch the surface in understanding Kuiper Belt objects, but it is already clear that the very limited samples of them that we have in our laboratories hold the promise of dramatically expanding our understanding of the formation of the Solar System. Stardust returned the first samples from a known small solar-system body, the Jupiter-family comet 81P/Wild 2, and, in a separate collector, the first solid samples from the local interstellar medium. The first decade of Stardust research resulted in more than 142 peer-reviewed publications, including 15 papers in Science. Analyses of these amazing samples continue to yield unexpected discoveries and to raise new questions about the history of the early Solar System. We identify 9 high-priority scientific objectives for future Stardust analyses that address important unsolved problems in planetary science., Comment: In press at Meteoritics and Planetary Science

The Dawn mission revolutionized our understanding of Ceres during the same decade that has also witnessed the rise of ocean worlds as a research and exploration focus. We will report progress on the Planetary Mission Concept Study (PMCS) on the future exploration of Ceres under the New Frontiers or Flagship program that was selected for NASA funding in October 2019. At the time this writing, the study was just kicked off, hence this abstract reports the study plan as presented in the proposal.

Introduction: Brecciated H chondrites host a variety of xenoliths, including unshocked, phyllo- silicate-rich carbonaceous chondrites (CCs). The brecciated H chondrite Zag (H3-6) is one of two chondrites to host macroscopic (1 - 5mm), xenolithic crystals of halite (NaCl) with aqueous fluid inclusions and organics. A ~1cm CC xenolith in Zag (Zag clast) has mineralogy similar to CI chondrites, but it has a unique bulk oxygen isotopic composition among all meteorites (Δ(exp 17)O = 1.49 ± 0.04 ‰, δ(exp 18)O = 22.38 ± 0.17 ‰). The Zag clast encloses halite in its matrix, linking the coarse, matrix halite and the xenolith to the same parent object, suggested to be hydrovolcanically active. Its bulk C and N contents are the highest among chondrites and bulk δ(exp 15)N is similar to CR chondrites and Bells. Insoluble organic material (IOM) in the Zag clast has δD and δ(exp 15)N “hotspots”, also similar to CR chondrites and Bells (C2-ung.). We provide further isotopic characterization of the Zag clast to constrain the formation temperature and origin of its primary and secondary components.

The Stardust Interstellar Preliminary Examination (ISPE) reported in 2014 the discovery of 7 probable contemporary interstellar (IS) particles captured in Stardust IS Collector aerogel and foils. The ISPE reports represented work done over 6 years by more than 60 scientists and >30,000 volunteers, which emphasizes the challenge identifying and analyzing Stardust IS samples was far beyond the primary Stardust cometary collection. We present a new potentially interstellar particle resulting from a continuation of analyses of the IS aerogel collection.

Introduction: Hydrothermal alteration is an important process in the evolution of asteroids. It was active in the earliest stages of asteroid evolution as evidenced by the secondary minerals in the meteorite record and is thought to be active today in the asteroid belt on icy bodies such as Ceres, as suggested by imaging and surface mineralogy from the DAWN mission. The Northwest Africa (NWA) 8785 enstatite chondrite is an anomalous EL3 chondrite that shows potential evidence of extensive hydrothermal activity on the E chondrite parent asteroid. The enstatite meteorites are of particular significance for the evolution of the terrestrial planets, having stable (O, Cr, Ti, Ni, Zn) isotope com- positions similar to the Earth-Moon and reduced chemistry similar to planet Mercury, as inferred from experiments. NWA 8785 is the first EL3 enstatite chondrite known to be rich in fine-grained matrix and is further unusual in that the matrix is FeO-rich. All previously studied enstatite chondrites are matrix-poor and/or their matrices are composed of reduced mineral assemblages similar to their chondrules. Here we describe the matrix mineralogy of this unusual EL3 chondrite NWA 8785 and discuss its implications for the EL3 parent asteroid(s) and hydrothermal activity in meteorite parent bodies.

Almahata Sitta (AhS) is classified as an anomalous, polymict ureilite and was observed prior to Earth impact as the F-type asteroid 2008 TC3 [e.g., 1-2]. As part of our characterization of this unusual meteorite [e.g., 3], we have been using microscopic infrared spectroscopy (µ-FTIR) to measure the mineralogy of fragments identified as carbonaceous chondrites (CC). In fragment 202 we have discovered unambiguous spectral evidence for a minimum of several vol% amphibole (specifically, tremolite), a mineral that is not known to occur in volumetrically significant abundances (defined here as >1%) in carbonaceous chondrites

CR chondrites are a group of car-bonaceous chondrites with well-preserved records of formation of their components in the solar nebula. The CR chondrites have undergone a wide range of aqueous alteration from nearly anhydrous (CR2.8 or CR3.0) to extensive recrystallization of primary minerals, including replacement of coarse-grained silicates in chondrules (CR2.0). At the same time, CRs have experienced only minor thermal metamorphism except for rare CR6 samples. Identifying minimally altered CR chondrites is a priority because they preserve (1) relatively pristine records of the solar nebula and (2) minerals and textures at the beginning stages of aqueous alteration. Here we report the petrologic characteristics of Y-791498 and A-881828 as the least aqueously altered CR chondrites in the Japanese NIPR meteorite collection. Previous studies have shown that fine-grained rims on chondrules are indicators of incipient alteration of primitive CR chondrites, there-fore we focus on rims around chondrules in the two meteorites.

C-type asteroid 162173 Ryugu was observed by remote sensing apparatus onboard Hayabusa2 spacecraft and found to be very dark object whose reflectance is (1.60 ± 0.15) % at 0.55μm and showed a small 2.7μm absorption band indicative of phyllosilicates. The optical navigation camera detected color variations of Ryugu’s surface in the wavelength range from 0.4 to 0.95μm: Bluer spectra are ob-served at both poles and on the equatorial ridge, both of which are topographic highs and thus may be fresh material exposed by gradual erosion. On the other hand, many locations at middle-latitude areas exhibit redder and darker colors. Similar color variations are also detected in the near-infrared wavelength range. These observations suggest that a surface-correlated process is responsible for the color variation, most prob-ably from blue to red, but the mechanism for the change is not yet identified. Space weathering is one possible mechanism responsible for the color variation, but the spectral changes of C-type asteroids from space weathering are far from being fully understood. Past experimental studies using hydrous carbonaceous chondrites such as Murchison and Tagish Lake show that He exposure (simulating solar wind irradiation) changes spectra to bluer and brighter. Recently our He exposure experiments indicate that spectral changes depend on physical properties such as porosity of exposed material. In this study, we per-formed further He exposure experiments using Murchison CM chondrite in order to understand energy dependence on the spectral changes. We found that He energy is a critical parameter, as well as physical properties of the samples, that affects spectral changes of space weathering of hydrated C-type asteroids.

C-complex asteroids frequently exhibit reflectance spectra consistent with thermally metamor-phosed or shocked carbonaceous chondrites, and brecciation, including Ryugu, and Bennu. Petrographic evidence of brecciation has been presented for CM, and here we reexamine Cold Bokkeveld, one of the most diverse CM breccias, as a preview of the samples to be returned from Ryugu and Bennu.

The Aguas Zarcas meteorite fell in Costa Rica on 23 April 2019 at 21:07 local time, with a total mass of about 27 kg. Hundreds of fusion-crusted stones ranging from 0.1 to 1868 g were recovered (The Meteoritical Bulletin). The meteorite was classified as a CM chondrite, but some lithlogies show a different texture to that of CM. In this study, we investigated the petrography, mineral-ogy, chemistry, and isotopic composition of an unusual “Metal-rich-lithology” from this fresh fall.

Almahata Sitta (AhS) 202 from the UoK collection represents a clast from the polymict breccia asteroid 2008 TC3. AhS 202 was recognized as a unique carbonaceous chondrite (CC) with a high magnetite content. Here we report that it also contains a significant amount of amphibole, a mineral that is very rare in chondrites and has not previously been reported in significant abundance in a CC. We present new petrographic, oxygen isotope, and micro-FTIR data. We discuss petrogenesis and possible relationships to known CC.

Brecciated H chrondites host a variety of xenoliths, including unshocked, phyllosilate-rich carbonaceous chondrites (CCs) [1-2]. The brecciated H chondrite Zag (H3-6) is one of two chondrites to host macroscopic (1 - 5mm), xenolithic crystals of halite (NaCl) with aqueous fluid inclusions and organics [3-4]. A ~1cm CC xenolith in Zag (Zag clast) also encloses halite in its matrix, linking the halite and the xenolith to the same parent object. The Zag clast has mineralogy similar to CI chondrites, but it has a unique bulk oxygen isotopic composition among all meteorites (Δ17O = 1.49 ± 0.04 ‰, 𝛿18O = 22.38 ± 0.17 ‰) and is therefore derived from a uniquely sampled parent object [5-6]. Organics have high bulk 𝛿D and 𝛿15N values with isotopic "hotspots" similar to organics in CR chondrites and Bells (C2-ung.) [6-7]. Bulk 𝛿15N is also similar to CRs and Bells [7]. We provide further isotopic characterization of the Zag clast to constrain the formation temperature and origin of its primary and secondary components.

The crystallographic orientations of chondrule minerals can provide important insights into their formation and deformational history. For example, the orientations of the olivine bars and surrounding rim in barred olivine chondrules provide information and on the conditions of crystallization and the orientations and shapes of olivines within porphritic chondrules can record the reactions with the surrounding nebular gas during chondrule formation. Later deformation on the parent body can cause crystal-plastic deformation of chondrule minerals that is evident through their intracrystalline lattice misorientations. Typically these crystal orientations and lattice misorientations are determined using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) on thin sections but this gives only a 2D picture for what is actually a 3D texture. While it is possible to combine EBSD with serial sectioning to build a 3D dataset of texture, this is a destructive, time-intensive process. A recent technological development that enables non-destructive, 3D crystallographic orientation measurement is X-ray diffraction contrast tomography (DCT), which uses the X-ray diffraction of the crystal lattice to determine orientation. Originally only possible using monochromatic X-ray beams at 3rd generation synchrotron light sources, DCT has been recently adapted to polychromatic sources of laboratory X-ray microscopes (referred to as Lab-DCT). Up to this point LabDCT has only been applied to large, well-formed crystals of high symmetry (i.e., metals), but we recently acquired DCT datasets for a pair Bjurböle chondrules to determine the applicability of the technique to natural, mutlimineralic samples composed predominately of olivine (i.e., chondrules).

The CM chondrites are generally complex impact breccias, in which lithic clasts and mineral fragments showing various degrees of aqueous alteration and possibly originating from different parent bodies are mixed together. The occurrence of CM-like clasts in other chondritic and achondritic meteorite breccias is also well-documented, however, reports on the occurrence of foreign clasts in CM chondrites are rare. In this study, we reinvestigated the white clast in the Murchison CM chondrite and demonstrate that the clast is not related to R chondrites as earlier suggested. In addition to the classification we discuss the origin and the history of its formation by studying several aspects like mineralogy, bulk chemistry, Rare Earth Elements (REE), oxygen isotopes, and the soluble organic compounds.

The enstatite (E) chondrites are enigmatic but important for understanding the evolution of the terrestrial planets. They have highly reduced mineral assemblages in which enstatite (near pure in compostion) is the dominant silicate, metal is abundant and contains >2.5 wt. % Si in some EH3s, elements which are generally lithophile in most chondrites occur as sulfide and some E3s contain nitrides and carbides. Notably, stable isotope compositions are similar to the Earth-Moon. Aside from E chondrite clasts in the Kaidun breccia, the enstaite chondrites are dry, lacking evidence of ever having hydrous minerals, distinguishing them from most other chondrite groups and suggesting they formed relatively close to the sun, inside of the snow line. Compared to other chondrite groups, the E3s are also matrix-poor, with EH3s having ~4-12 vol. % and EL3s ≤5 vol % matrix. Here we present a study of NWA 8785, a remarkable new EL3 chondrite with an FeO-rich, fine-grained matrix. Our goals are to understand E chondrite matrix and the evolution and alteration history of the EL3 parent body.

A group called as Martian meteorites is composed of shergottites, nakhlites, chassignites, and orthopyroxenite, and they are thought to be derived from Mars. Among the Martian meteorites nakhlites and chassignites show similar cosmic-ray exposure (CRE) ages of 11-12 million years, although petrologic characteristics are very different between them. Both nakhlites and chassignites indicate similar cooling rates, and would have cooled in identical scale of igneous bodies. However, the relationship between nakhlites and chassignites is still unclear, although they might have ejected at the same time, i.e., by accidentally coincidental impact events which occurred at different places on Mars or by a single impact which excavated both nakhlites and chassignites residing in a relatively small area. Here we propose that the chassignites show a genetically close relationship with nakhlites, i.e., both groups could be located within a relatively narrow area from where a single impact could have launched those meteorites, based on noble gas data obtained in our laboratory. If chassignites were really ejected with nakhlites by a single impact, both types of meteorites will provide us with geological/petrological profile in the area where both pyroxene-rich lava (nakhlites) and dunite-rich rocks (chassignites) are located close to the Martian surface. [i.e. discusses NWA 2737, etc. (Martian meteorites that fell in Northwest Africa)]

thermally-metamorphosed ordinary chondrite regolith breccias (Monahans 1998, hereafter simply “Monahans” ( 5) and Zag (H3-6)) contain fluid inclusion-bearing halite (NaCl) crystals dated to be ~4.5 billion years old. Thus, compositional data on fluid inclusions in these halites will reveal unique information regarding the origin and activity of aqueous fluids in the early solar system, and especially their interactions with organic mate- rial. Our initial analyses of solid inclusions in Monahans halite has shown the presence of olivine, high- and low- Ca pyroxene, feldspars, magnetite, sulfides, phyllosilicates, zeolites, metal, phosphates and abundant organics. We age of carbon, carbonates and organics in these residues, and low but significant amino acids concentrations in Monahans and Zag halite.

Throughout the lifetime of the solar system, collisions between small bodies and impacts on the surfaces of small bodies in the Kuiper Belt have occured at speeds of 1.5 - 3 km s-1 (Stern, Astron J 124, 2002), typically at 1-10 km s-1 between Trojan asteroids (Marzari et al. Icarus 119, 1996), and at ~4-8 km s-1 in the asteroid belt (Farinella and Davis, Icarus 97, 1992). Shock effects recorded by minerals composing these bodies are one observable legacy of this evolutionary process, whether they were generated through large collisions, micrometeoroid impacts, or processing during the formation of the solar system. Shock metamorphism has been observed in cometary samples such as those from Comet Wild 2 (Keller et al. Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta 72, 2008; Tomeoka et al. MAPS 43, 2008; Jacobs et al. MAPS 44, 2009) as well as in forsterites and enstatites found in meteorites (McCausland et al. AGU, 2010). To investigate the observable signatures of these processes, we have conducted a suite of impact experiments at NASA Johnson Space Center's Experimental Impact Laboratory (EIL). Target materials included Mg-rich forsterite (olivine), Mg-rich enstatite (orthopyroxene), and antigorite and lizardite (both in the serpentine group of phyllosilicates). Alumina-ceramic spheres were launched at speeds ranging from ~2.0 - 2.6 km s-1 into targets at temperatures from 25degC to -100degC. Recent advancements have been made in cooling targets in the EIL's vertical gun. Liquid nitrogen (LN2) is fed through a unique jacket surrounding the metallic sample container to chill the samples. Real-time values from temperature sensors attached to the sample holder are converted to target temperature through predetermined regression relationships, providing the target temperature at the time of impact with sub-degree accuracy. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR) data in the near to mid-IR will be presented, along with trends relating temperature and velocity with impact speeds, and thereby peak shock stresses experienced by the impacted minerals.

As originally demonstrated by Clayton and co-workers, primitive meteorites and their components commonly display mass-independent oxygen isotopic variation. As a tool to understand this behaviour, a number of reference lines have been defined, with slopes of approximately 1. The Carbonaceous Chondrite Anhydrous Mineral (CCAM) line, derived predominantly from analyses of components in the Allende (CV3) meteorite, is the most widely used reference and has a slope of 0.94 plus or minus 0.01 (2 sigma). However, the fundamental significance of the CCAM line has been questioned. Based on the results of a UV laser ablation study of an Allende CAI (calcium-aluminum–rich inclusion), it was suggested that a line of exactly slope 1 (Y&R line - Young and Russell line) was of more fundamental significance. SIMS (Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) analysis of chondrules from primitive CRs and related chondrites define a third, distinct slope 1 line, known as the Primitive Chondrule Minerals (PCM) line. Here we discuss the results of bulk oxygen isotope analysis of CO, CV and CR chondrites and various separated components, with the aim of better understanding the origin of slope 1 behaviour in early Solar System materials.

There is excellent evidence that a dynamical instability in the early solar system led to gravitational interactions between the giant planets and trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs). Giant planetary migration triggered by the instability dispersed a disk of primordial TNOs and created a number of small body reservoirs (e.g. the Kuiper Belt, scattered disk, irregular satellites, and the Jupiter/Neptune Trojan populations). It also injected numerous bodies into the main asteroid belt, where modeling shows they can successfully reproduce the observed P and D-type asteroid populations. During the injection era and after implantation, some of these “main belt TNOs” would have collided with S-class asteroids. Some of this material may have survived as a component of asteroid regolith breccias. Thus, we have been searching for evidence of these impact events in the form of carbonaceous xenoliths in brecciated ordinary chondrites. These xenoliths would have experienced a wide range of impact velocities, and therefore we should expect to see everything between relatively unaltered material to completely shock-melted lithologies. This material might also be different from the carbonaceous chondrites that represent standard C-complex asteroids. A goal of this research is to define useful criteria for distinguishing between these two classes of materials, including O, Cr, N and C isotopes, petrographic characteristics, and chronology.

R-chondrites share some properties with ordinary chondrites (OC) and carbonaceous chondrites (CC). The proportions of the textural types of chondrule from R chondrites and their FeO/(FeO+MgO) ratios are similar to those of OC, but the high matrix abundance in R chondrites more closely resembles that of CC (matrix abundances: OC ~12 vol% vs. CC 34->60 vol%;). In this study, we characteristize the mineralogy of a white clast from Murchison (CM2), which was earlier considered to be a R-chondrite. First, all the petrographic and mineralogical characteristics will be described and compared with those of R-chondrites. Finally, all data will be considered in order to test, whether this clast is a real R-chondrite or a unique recrystallized chondrite?

Zag and Monahans (1998) are H chondrite regolith breccias that contain 4.5 GY old halite crystals which in turn contain abundant inclusions of aqueous fluids, solids and organics. We have previously proposed that these halites originated on a hydrovolcanically-active C class asteroid, probably Ceres, or a trans-neptunian object (TNO - or P- or D-class asteroid) injected into the inner solar system during giant planet migration. We have begun a detailed analysis of organics and other solids trapped within the halite, which we hypothesize sample the mantle of the halite parent object, and are examining a halite-bearing C1 chondrite clast also found in Zag, which is similar to the solids in the halite. These investigations will reveal the water-rock interactions on the hydrovolcanically-active parent world.

Groups at the Johnson Space Center and the University of Tokyo have been using electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) to reveal the crystal structures of extraterrestrial minerals for many years. Even though we also routinely use transmission electron microscopy, synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD), and conventional electron diffraction, we find that EBSD is the most powerful technique for crystal structure elucidation in many instances. In this talk I describe a few of the cases where we have found EBSD to provide crucial, unique information. See attachment.

Primitive xenolithic CI-like carbonaceous (C) clasts are sometimes hosted within meteorites of a different origin (ordinary chondrite, ureilite, howardite, and eucrite). These xenoliths contain aggregates of macromolecular carbon (MMC), which are often present as discrete grains and exhibit a wide range of structural order and chemical compositions. The Carancas meteorite is a H4-5 that impacted south of Lake Titicaca, Peru in 2007. While the meteorite exhibits extensive recrystallization of the matrix indicating metamorphism, it contains dark, CI-like clasts that show no evidence of heating. Similar to other xenolithic clasts, the examined C clast of Carancas contains MMC, which however exists in the form of a vein-like structure dissimilar to the typical occurrence of MMC in meteorites. We investigated the organic and isotopic compositions of the organic-rich vein with C,N,O-X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), Raman spectroscopy, and NanoSIMS, in order to constrain its possible origin.

Every year, the Earth accretes about 40,000 tons of extraterrestrial material less than 1 mm in size on its surface. These dust particles originate from active comets, from impacts between asteroids and may also be coming from interstellar space for the very small particles. Since 1981, NASA Jonhson Space Center (JSC) has been systematically collecting the dust from Earth's strastosphere by airborne collectors and gathered them into "Cosmic Dust Catalogs". In those catalogs, a preliminary analysis of the dust particles based on SEM images, some geological characteristics and X-ray energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) composition is compiled. Based on those properties, the IDPs are classified into four main groups: C (Cosmic), TCN (Natural Terrestrial Contaminant), TCA (Artificial Terrestrial Contaminant) and AOS (Aluminium Oxide Sphere). Nevertheless, 20% of those particles remain ambiguously classified. Lasue et al. presented a methodology to help automatically classify the particles published in the catalog 15 based on their EDS spectra and nonlinear multivariate projections (as shown in Fig. 1). This work allowed to relabel 155 particles out of the 467 particles in catalog 15 and reclassify some contaminants as potential cosmic dusts. Further analyses of three such particles indicated their probable cosmic origin. The current work aims to bring complementary information to the automatic classification of IDPs to improve identification criteria.

There is an increasing number of Cr-O-Ti isotope studies that show that solar system materials are divided into two main populations, one carbonaceous chondrite (CC)-like and the other is non-carbonaceous (NCC)-like, with minimal mixing between them attributed to a gap opened in the propoplanetary disk due to Jupiter's formation. The Grand Tack model suggests that there should be a particular time in the disk history when this gap is breached and ensuring a subsequent large-scale mixing between S- and C-type asteroids (inner solar system and outer solar system materials), an idea supported by our recent work on chondrule (Delta)17O-(epsilon)54Cr isotope systematics.

Almahata Sitta meteorites are unique polymict breccia, comprising of many different meteorite groups as individual fragments dominated by ureilite lithologies and are considered to be recovered fragments of the asteroid 2008TC3. Recently, two unusual Almahata Sitta samples (MS-MU-011 and MS-MU-012) have been reported that show close petrogenetic relationships to ureilites. MS-MU-011 is a trachyandesite mainly composed of feldspar (plagioclase and anorthoclase) and pyroxene (pigeonite and augite) having ureilitic oxygen isotopic ratios. MS-MU-012 is the first ureilite example (unbrecciated) containing primary plagioclase crystals. The findings of these two rock types are important to better understand formation conditions of ureilites and the evolution of their parent body(s). In this abstract we discuss formation conditions of these ureilite-related rocks using redox state estimate by Fe valence states of plagioclase and olivine cooling rate calculations.

The Almahata Sitta (AhS) polymict ureilite fell in 2008 when asteroid 2008 TC3 impacted over Sudan]. It is the first meteorite to originate from an asteroid that had been tracked and studied in space (with spectral classification) before impact, and provides a unique opportunity to correlate properties of meteorites with those of their parent asteroid. More than 700 monolithologic stones from the AhS fall were collected. Of those previously studied, approx. 70% were ureilites and approx. 30% were chondrites. It has been inferred that 2008 TC3 was loosely aggregated and porous and disintegrated in the atmosphere, with only its most coherent clasts falling as stones. However, understanding the structure of this asteroid is limited by incomplete study of the heterogeneous stones, and the loss of most of the mass of the asteroid. The University of Khartoum (UOK) AhS collection contains over >600 AhS stones with find coordinates. We are studying this collection to determine: 1) the proportion of ureilitic to various non-ureilitic stones; 2) the distribution of types of stones in the strewn field; and 3) the compositional and physical structure of 2008 TC3. We report on 61 new stones, including a unique sample that may represent the bulk of the material lost from 2008 TC3.

CR chondrites are the group of carbonaceous chondrites that best preserve records of formation of their components in the solar nebula. Although they are affected by aqueous alteration, many chondrules and CAIs are well-preserved, suggesting they have experienced little thermal metamorphism. We have been investigating the petrologic variations among the CR chondrites in the NIPR Antarctic meteorite collection. We focused particular attention on the petrology of amoeboid olivine aggregates (AOAs) in order to understand secondary alteration on the CR chondrite parent body. AOAs are composed of fine-grained forsteritic olivine and refractory minerals formed by condensation in the solar nebula, and can be used as sensitive indicators of secondary alteration processes.

Amoeboid olivine aggregates (AOAs) are important components of carbonaceous chondrites that are interpreted as solar nebula condensates, and can be used as sensitive indicators of metamorphic or alteration processes. We have been investigating a set of Antarctic CR chondrites from the Japanese-NIPR collection in order to study variations within the CRs in general and their AOAs in particular. Main goals are to identify variations in conditions of nebular condensation, parent body effects and terrestrial weathering.

Polymict ureilites contain a variety of Less than or equal to mm to cm sized non-ureilitic clasts, many of which can be identifed as chondritic and achondritic meteorite types. Among them, dark clasts have been observed in polymict ureilites that are similar to CI chondrites in mineralogy, containing phyllosilicates, magnetite, sulfide and carbonates. Bulk oxygen isotope analyses of a dark clast in Nilpena plot along the CCAM line and above the terrestrial fractionation line, on the O-poor extension of the main group ureilite trend and clearly different from bulk CI chondrites. One possible origins of such dark clast is that they represent aqueously altered precursors of ureilite parent body (UPB) that were preserved on the cold surface of the UPB. Oxygen isotope analyses of dark clasts are key to better understanding their origins. Oxygen isotope ratios of magnetite are of special interest because they reflect the compositions of the fluids in asteroidal bodies. In primitive chondrites, Delta O (= Delta O - 0.52× Delta O) values of magnetites are always higher than those of the bulk meteorites and represent minimum Delta O values of the initial O-poor aqueous fluids in the parent body. Previous SIMS analyses on magnetite and fayalite in dark clasts from the DaG 319 polymict ureilite were analytically difficult due to small grain sizes, though data indicated positive Delta O values of 3-4 per mille, higher than that of the dark clast in Nilpena (1.49per mille).

Northwest Africa (NWA) 10758 is a newly identified carbonaceous chondrite that is a Bali-like oxidized CV3. The large Ca-Al rich inclusion (CAI) in this sample is approx. 2.4 x 1.4 cm. The CAI is transitional in composition between type A and type B, with interior mineralogy dominated by melilite, plus less abundant spinel and Al-Ti rich diopside, and only very minor anorthite (Fig. 1A). This CAI is largely free of secondary alteration in the exposed section we examined, with almost no nepheline, sodalite or Ca-Fe silicates. The Wark-Lovering (WL) rim on this CAI is dominated by hibonite, with lower abundances of spinel and perovskite, and with hibonite locally overlain by melilite plus perovskite (as in Fig. 1B). Note that the example shown in 1B is exceptional. Around most of the CAI, hibonite + spinel + perovskite form the WL rim, without overlying melilite. The WL rim can be unusually thick, ranging from approx.20 microns up to approx. 150 microns. A well-developed, stratified accretionary rim infills embayments of the CAI, and thins over protuberances in the convoluted CAI surface.

CI chondrites are thought to approximate the bulk solar system composition since they closely match the composition of the solar photosphere. Thus, chemical differences between a planetary object and the CI composition are interpreted to result from fractionations of a CI starting composition. This interpretation is often made despite the secondary mineralogy of CI chondrites, which resulted from low-T aqueous alteration on the parent asteroid(s). Prevalent alteration and the relatively large uncertainties in the photospheric abundances (approx. +/-5-10%) permit chemical fractionation of CI chondrites from the bulk solar system, if primary chondrules and/or CAIs have been altered beyond recognition. Isolated olivine and pyroxene grains that range from approx. 5 microns to several hundred microns have been reported in CI chondrites, and acid residues of Orgueil were found to contain refractory oxides with oxygen isotopic compositions matching CAIs. However, the only CAI found to be unambiguously preserved in a CI chondrite was identified in Ivuna. The Ivuna CAI's primary mineralogy, small size (approx.170 microns), and fine-grained igneous texture classify it as a compact type A. Aqueous alteration infiltrated large portions of the CAI, but other regions remain pristine. The major primary phases are melilite (Ak 14-36 ), grossmanite (up to 20.8 wt.% TiO 2 ), and spinel. Both melilite and grossmanite have igneous textures and zoning patterns. An accretionary rim consists primarily of olivine (Fa 2-17 ) and low-Ca pyroxene (Fs 2-10 ), which could be either surviving CI2 material or a third lithology.

The Almahata Sitta (AhS) polymict ureilite is the first meteorite to originate from a spectrally classified asteroid (2008 TC3) [1-3], and provides an unprecedented opportunity to correlate properties of meteorites with those of their parent asteroid. AhS is also unique because its fragments comprise a wide variety of meteorite types. Of approximately140 stones studied to-date, ~70% are ureilites (carbon-rich ultramafic achondrites) and 30% are various types of chondrites [4,5]. None of these show contacts between ureilitic and chondritic lithologies. It has been inferred that 2008 TC3 was loosely aggregated, so that it disintegrated in the atmosphere and only its most coherent clasts fell as individual stones [1,3,5]. Understanding the structure and composition of this asteroid is critical for missions to sample asteroid surfaces. We are studying [6] the University of Khartoum collection of AhS [3] to test hypotheses for the nature of 2008 TC3. We describe a sample that consists of both ureilitic and chondritic materials.

All asteroids surfaces imaged at the cm-scale reveal the presence of pond deposits. These ponds are important because it is likely all asteroid sample return missions will sample them, being the safest (very flat) places to touch down. Therefore, it is essential to understand the differences between the material at the pond surfaces and the host asteroid. Fortunately, some fine-grained cognate lithologies in chondrites show sedimentary features indicating that they sample asteroid ponds.

There is an increasing number of Cr-O-Ti isotope studies that show solar system materials are divided into two main populations, one carbonaceous chondrite (CC)-like and the other is non-carbonaceous (NC)-like, with minimal mixing attributed to a gap opened in the protoplanetary disk due to Jupiter's formation. The Grand Tack model suggests there should be large-scale mixing between S- and C-type asteroids, an idea supported by our recent work on chondrule (Delta)17O-ε54Cr isotope systematics. The Almahata Sitta (AhS) meteorite provides a unique opportunity to test the Grand Tack model. The meteorite fell to Earth in October 2008 and has been linked to the asteroid 2008 TC3 which was discovered just prior to the fall of the AhS stones. The AhS meteorite is composed of up to 700 individual pieces with approx.140 of those pieces having some geochemical and/or petrologic studies. Almahata Sitta is an anomalous polymict ureilite with other meteorite components, including enstatite, ordinary, and carbonaceous chondrites with an approximate abundance of 70% ureilites and 30% chondrites. This observation has lead to the suggestion that TC3 2008 was a loosely aggregated rubble pile-like asteroid with the non-ureilite sample clasts within the rubble-pile. Due to the loosely-aggregated nature of AhS, the object disintegrated during atmospheric entry resulting in the weakly held clasts falling predominantly as individual stones in the AhS collection area. However, recent work has identified one sample of AhS, sample 91A, which may represent two different lithologies coexisting within a single stone. The predominate lithology type in 91A appears to be that of a C2 chondrite based on mineralogy but also contains olivine, pyroxene, and albite that have ureilite-like compositions. Previous Cr isotope investigations into AhS stones are sparse and what data is available show nearly uniform isotopic composition similar to that of typical ureilites with negative ε54Cr values.

Nakhlites and chassignites are ultramafic cumulate rocks of clinopyroxene and olivine, respec-tively, considered to have been formed in a thick lava flow or shallow intrusion near the Martian surface [e.g., 1,2]. Although more than 100 Martian meteorites have been found so far, most of them are shergottites and only nine nakhlites and three chassignites are known (considering paired samples) [3]. In contrast to shergottites which show large variations in both mineralogy and ages, nakhlites and chassignites are suggested to have been petrogenetically related, crystallized at about the same time and been ejected by the same impact event because of their identical crystallization (approximately 1.3 Ga) and cosmic-ray exposure (10-11 My) ages [e.g., 1]. In this study we discuss the possibility of a common igneous body for all samples belonging to these two groups as suggested by previous studies [e.g., 4]. To do this we estimated cooling rates of olivine using Ca zoning profiles, especially by paying attention to the newest samples of each group (NWA 10720 nakhlite and NWA 8694 chassignite).
