Background: Sedentary behaviour (SC) has been identified as a risk factor for chronic diseases and allcause mortality. Objective: To estimate the prevalence of SC and associated factors in university students in the health area of a university in the Brazilian Midwest. Method: Cross-sectional study with health academics, of both sexes, aged between 18 and 59 years. Data were collected through a questionnaire and the SC was established by time watching television, using a computer, playing video games and using transportation. The cut-off point considered as high SC was 6 hours or more per day. The adjusted analysis was performed using Poisson regression. Results: Among the 2,287 participants, the prevalence of SC was 50.4% (95%CI 48.3 - 52.5), being male (PR=1.18; 95%CI 1.04-1, 35; p < 0.010), studying medicine (PR=1.16; 95%CI 1.00-1.34; p< 0.047) and not practicing physical activity (PR=1.55; 95%CI 1.28-1, 87; p<0.001), were associated with the outcome. Conclusion: About half of the students had SC, this condition being associated with being male, having a medical course and having a low level of physical activity. It was emphasized the importance of public policies to reduce the SC with recommendations to university students to avoid future damage to health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
