Abstract: The knowledge of the material budget with a high precision is fundamental for measurements of direct photon production using the photon conversion method due to its direct impact on the total systematic uncertainty. Moreover, it influences many aspects of the charged-particle reconstruction performance. In this article, two procedures to determine data-driven corrections to the material-budget description in ALICE simulation software are developed. One is based on the precise knowledge of the gas composition in the Time Projection Chamber. The other is based on the robustness of the ratio between the produced number of photons and charged particles, to a large extent due to the approximate isospin symmetry in the number of produced neutral and charged pions. Both methods are applied to ALICE data allowing for a reduction of the overall material budget systematic uncertainty from 4.5% down to 2.5%. Using these methods, a locally correct material budget is also achieved. Abstract: Resistive Plate Chamber detectors are largely used in current High Energy Physics experiments, typically operated in avalanche mode with large fractions of Tetrafluoroethane (C2H2F4), a gas recently banned by the European Union due to its high Global Warming Potential (GWP). An intense R&D activity is ongoing to improve RPC technology in view of future HEP applications. In the last few years the RPC EcoGas@GIF++ Collaboration has been putting in place a joint effort between the ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, LHCb/SHiP and EP-DT Communities to investigate the performance of present and future RPC generations with eco-friendly gas mixtures. Detectors with different layout and electronics have been operated with ecological gas mixtures, with and without irradiation at the CERN Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF++). Abstract: The ALICE RPCs are operated with a mixture of 89.7% $C_{2}H_{2}F_{4}$, 10% i-$C_{4}H_{10}$ and 0.3% $SF_{6}$. $C_{2}H_{2}F_{4}$ and $SF_{6}$ are fluorinated greenhouse gases with a high Global Warming Potential (GWP). New European Union regulations have imposed a progressive phase-down of the production and usage of F-gases, aiming to cut down their emission by two thirds in 2030 with respect to 2014. Even though research activities are excluded from these regulations, the phase-down will inevitably increase their price and CERN is also aiming to cut down on its emissions. For these reasons it is crucial to find a more eco-friendly gas mixture for RPCs by the time of the LHC long shutdown 3, foreseen in 2026. Since $C_{2}H_{2}F_{4}$ is the main contributor to the mixture GWP, an extensive R&D process has started to replace it with tetrafluoropropene ($C_{3}H_{2}F_{4}$), due to its chemical similarity with $C_{2}H_{2}F_{4}$ and its low GWP (around 7). Preliminary tests with cosmic rays have shown promising results in terms of detector performance. The next step is to study the long-term behavior of RPCs operated with these new gas mixtures (aging studies). Since this is a subject of interest for all (and not only) the LHC experiments, a collaboration, ECOgas@GIF++, was setup to carry out joint studies. Among others, a small ALICE-like RPC was installed at the Gamma Irradiation Facility at CERN, where they are exposed to a strong radiation field, coming from a 12.5 TBq $^{137}$Cs source, which allows one to simulate many years of operation in a relatively short time. Abstract: International audience; Since a few years a joint collaboration between ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, LHCb/SHiP and CERN EP-DT groups is in place with the goal to study the performance of RPCs operated with eco-friendly gas mixtures under different irradiation conditions at GIF++.The performance of several chambers with different layout and electronics has been studied during dedicated beam tests, with and without gamma irradiation at GIF++. The RPCs have been operated with different gas mixtures based on $\rm{CO_{2}}$ and HFO1234ze gases. Results of these tests together with the future plans for aging studies of the chambers will be presented.

Abstract: Due to their simplicity and comparatively low cost Resistive Plate Chambers are gaseous detectors widely used in high-energy and cosmic rays physics when large detection areas are needed. However, the best gaseous mixtures are currently based on tetrafluoroethane, which has the undesirable characteristic of a large Global Warming Potential (GWP) of about 1400 and because of this, it is currently being phased out from industrial use. As a possible replacement, tetrafluoropropene (which has a GWP close to 1) has been taken into account. Since tetrafluoropropene is more electronegative than tetrafluoroethane, it has to be diluted with gases with a lower attachment coefficient in order to maintain the operating voltage close to 10 kV. One of the main candidates for this role is carbon dioxide. In order to ascertain the feasibility and the performance of tetrafluoropropene-CO2 based mixtures, an R&D program is being carried out in the ALICE collaboration, which employs an array of 72 Bakelite RPCs (Muon Identifier, MID) to identify muons. Different proportions of tetrafluoropropene and CO2, with the addition of small quantities of isobutane and sulphur hexafluoride, have been tested with 50x50 cm2 RPC prototypes with 2 mm wide gas gap and 2 mm thick Bakelite electrodes. Abstract: Due to their simplicity and comparatively low cost, Resistive Plate Chambers are gaseous detectors widely used in high-energy and cosmic rays physics, when large detection areas are needed. However, the best gaseous mixtures are currently based on tetrafluoroethane, which has the undesirable characteristic of a large Global Warming Potential (GWP) of about 1400 and, because of this, it is currently being phased out from industrial use. Tetrafluoropropene (which has a GWP close to 1) is being considered as a possible replacement. Since tetrafluoropropene is more electronegative than tetrafluoroethane, it has to be diluted with gases with a lower attachment coefficient in order to maintain the operating voltage close to 10 kV. One of the main candidates for this role is carbon dioxide. In order to ascertain the feasibility and the performance of tetrafluoropropene-CO2 based mixtures, an R&D program is being carried out within the ALICE collaboration, employing an array of 72 Bakelite RPCs (Muon IDentifier, MID) in order to identify muons. Different proportions of tetrafluoropropene and CO2, with the addition of small quantities of isobutane and sulphur hexafluoride, have been tested with 50x50 cm 2 RPC prototypes with 2 mm wide gas gap and 2 mm thick Bakelite electrodes. Abstract: International audience; Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) detectors are widely used thanks to their excellent time resolution and low production cost. At the CERN LHC experiments, the large RPC systems are operated in avalanche mode thanks to a Freon-based gas mixture containing C2H2F4 and SF6, both greenhouse gases with a very high global warming potential (GWP). The search of new environmentally friendly gas mixtures is advisable for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, costs as well as to optimize RPC performance and possible detector aging issues.Several hydrofluorocarbons, hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) and innovative industrial alternative to SF6 gases with very low GWP have been identified as possible replacements of C2H2F4 and SF6. More than 60 environmentally friendly gas mixtures have been investigated on 2 mm single-gap RPCs. The RPC detectors have been tested in laboratory conditions and at the CERN Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF++), which provides a high energy muon beam combined with an intense gamma source allowing to simulate the background expected at HL-LHC.RPCs performance have been studied at different gamma rates with the new environmentally friendly gases by measuring efficiency, streamer probability, rate capability, induced charge, cluster size and time resolution. Encouraging results of RPC operation in avalanche mode have been obtained with 4 and 5 components gas mixtures. To finalize the studies, the RPCs are now operated under gas recirculation with the selected new gas mixture and exposed to the intense gamma radiation at the CERN GIF++ facility for evaluating possible long-term aging effects, gas damage due to radiation and compatibility of LHC gas system with new gases.

Abstract: International audience; One of the primary elements influencing gaseous detector operation is the purity of the gas mixture. Its quality can be undermined by the presence of impurities, already present in the supply gas bottles or that could be created in the gas system or from the detector itself. Gaseous detectors operated with Freon-based gas mixtures are subject to the formation of the products of gas molecules break up, occurring when the gas is exposed to high-rate radiation, and enhanced by the presence of high electric field. The release of highly reactive products could be critical as they could either create polymerized deposits or cause material etching, that could compromise detector performance and accelerate aging processes. Moreover, the operation of gas systems with gas recirculation, nowadays common in many gas systems, could worsen the risk of damage due to possible impurities accumulation. This work focuses on the production of fluorine-based impurities in Triple-GEMs detectors operated with C F4 -based gas mixture. Detectors are operated in a LHC-like gas system and exposed to high-rate gamma irradiation thanks to the intense 137 Cs source provided by the CERN Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF++). Impurity production is characterized for different detector operation conditions such as gas mixture, working voltage, input flow rate, and irradiation rates. Furthermore, purifier module operation is validated proving its efficiency in removing Fluoride impurities.

Abstract: International audience; Good and safe long-term operation of gaseous detectors are mainly guaranteed by the quality and stability of their gas mixture. Among Micro Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGD), Triple Gas Electron Multipliers (Triple-GEMs) have lately been more and more considered as tracking devices for LHC Experiments Muon Systems, as well as for others physics applications. Triple-GEM detectors are commonly operated with Ar/CO$_2$ or Ar/CO$_2$/CF$_4$ gas mixtures, and the correct proportion between the different gas mixture components is fundamental for stable detector operation. Moreover, common impurities such as N$_2$, O$_2$ and H$_2$O can affect their performance, mining their response reliability. This study presents a characterization of Triple-GEM detectors performance in relation to their gas mixture composition. Results are reported in terms of experimental measurements as well as computer simulations of the Triple-GEM electron amplification process.

Abstract: We have developed ultrasonic instrumentation for simultaneous flow and composition measurement in a variety of gas mixtures. Flow and composition are respectively derived from measurements of the difference and average of sound transit times in opposite directions in a flowing process gas. We have developed a sound velocity-based algorithm to compensate for the effects of additional gases, allowing the concentrations of a pair of gases of primary interest to be acoustically measured on top of a varying baseline from &lsquo, third party&rsquo, gases whose concentrations in the multi-gas mixture are measured by other means. Several instruments are used in the CERN ATLAS experiment. Three monitor C3F8, (R218), and CO2 coolant leaks into N2-purged environmental envelopes. Precision in molar concentration of better than 2 &times, 10&minus, 5 is routinely seen in mixtures of C3F8 in N2 in the presence of varying known concentrations of CO2. Further instruments monitor air ingress and C3F8 vapor flow (at high mass flows around 1.1 kg s&minus, 1) in the 60 kW thermosiphon C3F8 evaporative cooling recirculator. This instrumentation and analysis technique, targeting binary pairs of gases of interest in multi-gas mixtures, is promising for mixtures of anesthetic gases, particularly in the developing area of xenon anesthesia.

It is therefore fundamental to study MPGD operated with LHC gas systems, especially under gas recirculation, to be able to guarantee their safe long-term operation. In this context, the performance of Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors operated in gas recirculating systems have been studied at the CERN Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF++), which provides an intense gamma irradiation along with a Muon beam from the SPS accelerator. Triple-GEM detectors performance has been studied in relation to operation stability during long-term high rate irradiation, as well as in terms of Muon detection efficiency with different gamma background rates. Both tests were realized with various gas mixtures and gas system conditions. A complete overview of the results obtained at the GIF++is presented, showing the successful operation of Triple-GEM detectors during long-term high-rate irradiation and good Muon detection efficiency in HL-like background radiation.

Abstract: Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) have shown stable operation at the Large Hadron Collider and satisfactory efficiency for the entire Run 1 (2010-2013) and Run 2 (2015-2018) with C$_{2}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$-based gas mixtures and the addition of SF$_{6}$ and i-C$_{4}$H$_{10}$. Since its global warming potential (GWP) is high, C$_{2}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$ is phasing out of production due to recent European Union regulations and as a result its cost is progressively increasing. Therefore, finding a new RPC gas mixture with a low GWP has become extremely important. This contribution describes the simulation of the RPC efficiency with tetrafluoropropene C$_{3}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$ (HFO1234ze), a hydrofluoroolefin with very low GWP. Simulation results are systematically compared with measurements of RPC efficiency in C$_{3}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$-based gas mixtures with the addition of different combinations of Ar, He, CO$_{2}$, O$_{2}$ and i-C$_{4}$H$_{10}$ in various concentrations. Abstract: The spherical proportional counter is a novel gaseous detector with numerous applications, including direct dark matter searches and neutron spectroscopy. The strengths of the Geant4 and Garfield++ toolkits are combined to create a simulation framework for spherical proportional counters. The interface is implemented by introducing Garfield++ classes within a Geant4 application. Abstract: International audience; Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) detectors are widely used at the CERN LHC experiments as muon trigger thanks to their excellent time resolution. They are operated with a Freon-based gas mixture containing $C_2 H_2 F_4$ and $SF_6$, both greenhouse gases (GHG) with a very high global warming potential (GWP).The search of new environmentally friendly gas mixtures is necessary to reduce GHG emissions and costs as well as to optimize RPC performance.Several recently available gases with low GWP have been identified as possible replacements for $C_2 H_2 F_4$ and $SF_6$.In particular, eco-friendly gas mixtures based on the HFO-1234ze have been investigated on 1.4 and 2 mm single-gap and double-gap RPCs.The RPC detectors have been tested at the CERN Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF++), which provides a high energy muon beam combined with an intense gamma source allowing to simulate the background expected at HL-LHC.The performance of RPCs were studied at different gamma rates with the new environmentally friendly gases by measuring ohmic and physics currents, fluorine radicals and HF production, rate capability and induced charge.Preliminary results on the long-term effects on the performance of the detectors are presented in this study.

Abstract: In the frame of direct dark matter search, the fast neutrons producing elastic collisions are the ultimate background. The MIMAC (MIcro-tpc MAtrix Chambers) project has developed a directional detector providing the directional signature to discriminate them based on 3D nuclear tracks reconstruction. The MIMAC team of the LPSC has adapted one MIMAC chamber as a portable fast neutron spectrometer, the Mimac-FastN detector, having a very large neutron energy range (10 keV - 200 MeV) with different gas mixtures and pressures. The present paper shows its main features and functionality and demonstrates its potential in the energy range from 1 MeV to 15 MeV.

Abstract: International audience; Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) detectors at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments are operated with a gas mixture containing C2H2F4 (R134a) and SF6. These gases are used because they allow to achieve specific detector performance. However, due to their high Global Warming Potential (GWP) they are currently subject to a phase down policy that started to affect the market with price increase and it may cause a decrease in their long-term availability. To minimize these risks, four different strategies have been identified for optimizing their usage. As immediate actions and where possible, during the LHC Long Shutdown 2 (LS2) the RPC gas systems will be upgraded to cope with new detector requirements and, in parallel, extensive campaigns for fixing leaks at detector level will be performed. Since R134a dominates the greenhouse gas consumption, the development of a R134a gas recuperation plant is going to be the next step and it might have an important positive impact on the overall optimization process. Recently a prototype system was tested with encouraging results. For future long-term detector operation, R&D studies are ongoing for finding “green” alternatives to the currently used gases. Unfortunately, new gases developed by industry as refrigerant fluids are not behaving as the R134a in particle detectors which makes the replacement for present experiments difficult. The last strategy consists in the possibility of using industrial plants for the disposal of greenhouse gases by decomposition in harmless compounds. This solution avoids the emission in the atmosphere but it does not optimize the gas usage and problems like gas availability and price for detector operation might become the challenge in the coming years due to the greenhouse phase down policy.

Abstract: Gaseous detectors are widely used in high-energy physics experiments, and in particular at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), to provide tracking and triggering over large volumes. It has been recently estimated that Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC), used for muon detection, have the highest contribution on the overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at the LHC experiments. Gas mixtures for RPCs are mainly made of C$_{2}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$, which is a greenhouse gas with a high environmental impact in the atmosphere. C$_{2}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$ is already phasing out of production, due to recent European Union (EU) regulations, and its cost is expected to increase in the near future. Therefore, finding alternative gas mixtures made of gas components with a low Global Warming Potential (GWP) has become extremely important for limiting the GHG emissions as well as for economic reasons. The novel hydrofluoroolefins are likely appropriate candidates to replace C$_{2}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$ due to their similar chemical structures. This study is focused on the characterization of innovative gas mixtures with tetrafluoropropene HFO1234ze(E) (C$_{3}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$) that is one of the most eco-friendly hydrofluoroolefins, thanks to its very low GWP. Abstract: Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors have been successfully operated in the LHCb experiment and they will be installed in the CMS and ALICE experiments during LHC Long Shutdown 2. As for others LHC gaseous detector systems, gas mixture is individually provided by dedicated Gas Systems. Several studies have been performed in laboratory to characterize GEM performance from the point of view of their use in LHC Gas Systems, where many variables can influence detectors operation. A Triple-GEM prototype was tested with the aim of probing the possible effects of specific changes that could occur in the Gas System, such as variations in gas mixture composition, input gas flow and presence of impurities. A complete overview of the obtained results will be presented. The test confirms the importance of having a stable gas mixture composition, as it influences GEMs working point, with significant variations in the amplification gain. It was also seen how the input gas flow can affect GEMs performance, since it conditions the accumulation of humidity and air. Moreover, it was found that the presence of pollutants such as O2, N2 and H2O, commonly present during operation in the experiments, influences GEMs performance in terms of signal efficiency and amplification gain. While detector gain is weakly affected by the presence of N2, the presence of even small concentrations of O2 causes a significant performance decrease in terms of amplification gain.

Abstract: International audience; Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) detectors are widely employed in the muon trigger systems of three experiments at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) thanks to their excellent time resolution. The LHC RPC systems are operated under gas recirculation to reduce operation cost and greenhouse gas emissions since their gas mixture is based on C2H2F4, which has a global warning potential of 1430 and it is subject to the European F-gas Regulation. Extensive gas analysis campaigns have been performed during LHC Run 2 for the CMS RPC and ALICE Muon Trigger (MTR) systems to verify the gas mixture quality and possible accumulation of impurities. A particular attention has been addressed to the ALICE MTR system, which has been operated under gas recirculation from the end of 2015. In order to validate the system ensuring good detector operation, the gas recirculation has been increased in steps: 30%, 60% and 70%. Detector currents and gas mixture quality have been closely monitored. A gas chromatograph and mass spectrometer (GC/MS) station has been installed to analyze the MTR gas mixture in different points of the gas system: fresh gas from the mixer, detectors output and output of the purifier module. Several impurities have been found and identified. Most of the impurities are created inside the detector gas gap due to the fragmentation of the C2H2F4 molecule under the effects of electric field and radiation. The GC/MS analyses have been regularly performed in 2016 and 2017. It has been demonstrated that impurities concentration (at the level of tens of ppm) increases with the increase of the gas recirculation fraction. GC/MS analyses have been also performed after the purifier module showing that some impurities are filtered while others not. In parallel, the RPC currents have been constantly monitored, and their trend showed no correlation with the gas recirculation fraction. In 2017 an Ion Selective Electrode station was installed to measure the fluoride ions (F−) concentration in the MTR RPC gas mixture. Indeed the products of the C2H2F4 fragmentation not always recombine and F^− species can stay free in the gas mixture. The analyses show that F− are present in the mixture exiting the RPCs and their concentration increases with the increase of luminosity, even if it stays at the level of ppb per day. A comprehensive overview of the results obtained from the different types of gas analyses and possible correlation with RPC currents and LHC luminosity will be presented.

Abstract: A 10 kilo-tonne dual-phase liquid argon TPC is one of the detector options considered for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The detector technology relies on amplification of the ionisation charge in ultra-pure argon vapour and offers several advantages compared to the traditional single-phase liquid argon TPCs. A 4.2 tonne dual-phase liquid argon TPC prototype, the largest of its kind, with an active volume of \three has been constructed and operated at CERN. In this paper we describe in detail the experimental setup and detector components as well as report on the operation experience. We also present the first results on the achieved charge amplification, prompt scintillation and electroluminescence detection, and purity of the liquid argon from analyses of a collected sample of cosmic ray muons. Abstract: Custom ultrasonic instruments have been developed for simultaneous monitoring of binary gas mixture and flow in the ATLAS Inner Detector. Sound transit times are measured in opposite directions in flowing gas. Flow rate and sound velocity are respectively calculated from their difference and average. Gas composition is evaluated in real-time by comparison with a sound velocity/composition database, based on the direct dependence of sound velocity on component concentrations in a mixture at known temperature and pressure. Five devices are integrated into the ATLAS Detector Control System. Three instruments monitor coolant leaks into N2 envelopes of the silicon microstrip and Pixel detectors. Resolutions better than ±2×10−5±2×10−5 and ±2×10−4±2×10−4 are seen for C3F8 and CO2 leak concentrations in N2 respectively. A fourth instrument detects sub-percent levels of air ingress into the C3F8 condenser of the new thermosiphon coolant recirculator.
