Mountain shrublands are widespread habitats of the European Alps. Shrub encroachment into above treeline grazed lands profoundly modifies biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Yet, mountain shrublands remain overlooked in vegetation distribution modeling because it is difficult to distinguish them from productive grasslands. Here, we used the pigment-sensitive spectral indices based on Sentinel-2 bands within a specific phenological window, to produce a high-resolution distribution map of mountain shrublands in the French Alps. We evaluated the performance of our classification using a large dataset of vegetation plots and found that our model is highly sensitive to Ericaceous species which constitute most of the dense alpine shrublands in the French Alps. Our analysis of topoclimatic and land use factors limiting the shrubland distribution at regional scale found that, consistent with the ecophysiology of shrubs, expansion is limited by a combination of water deficit and temperature. We discussed the past and current land-use implications in the observed distribution and put forward hypotheses combining climate and land-use trajectories. Our work provides a baseline for monitoring mountain shrub dynamics and exploring the response of shrublands to past and ongoing climate and land use changes.

Field surveys and sample analyses were conducted from January 2018 to December 2019 on Daye Lake, Cihu Lake, Baoan Lake, and Xiandao Lake to understand the water quality characteristics of typical lakes in southeast Hubei. A fuzzy comprehensive evaluation was conducted and the comprehensive trophic level index was applied to evaluate the lakes' water quality. The results showed differences in the regional, spatial, and temporal distributions of physical and chemical indicators in typical lakes in southeast Hubei. The fuzzy comprehensive evaluation showed that the water quality levels in Daye, Cihu, Baoan, and Xiandao Lakes for 2018 and 2019 were IV, IV, III, and II and V, IV, III, and II, respectively, with seasonal variations in water quality occurring during the year. The trophic level index results showed that Cihu Lake was mildly eutrophic in 2018 and moderately eutrophic in 2019, and Daye, Baoan, and Xiandao Lakes were mildly eutrophic, mildly eutrophic, and mesotrophic, respectively. Lake water quality was influenced by land use types, landscape configuration, inflowing rivers, precipitation, and interactions between land use and seasons. This study helps us to understand the trend and causes of lake pollution in Southeast Hubei, which is conducive to watershed management and the control of water quality deterioration, and also has an important role in regulating the sustainable development of industry and agriculture in the watershed. Summary: Stem respiration constitutes a substantial proportion of autotrophic respiration in forested ecosystems, but its drivers across different spatial scales and land‐use gradients remain poorly understood. This study quantifies and examines the impact of logging disturbance on stem CO2 efflux (EA) in Malaysian Borneo.EA was quantified at tree‐ and stand‐level in nine 1‐ha plots over a logging gradient from heavily logged to old‐growth using the static chamber method.Tree‐level results showed higher EA per unit stem area in logged vs old‐growth plots (37.0 ± 1.1 vs 26.92 ± 1.14 g C m−2 month−1). However, at stand‐level, there was no difference in EA between logged and old‐growth plots (6.7 ± 1.1 vs 6.0 ± 0.7 Mg C ha−1 yr−1) due to greater stem surface area in old‐growth plots. Allocation to growth respiration and carbon use efficiency was significantly higher in logged plots. Variation in EA at both tree‐ and stand‐level was driven by tree size, growth and differences in investment strategies between the forest types.These results reflect different resource allocation strategies and priorities, with a priority for growth in response to increased light availability in logged plots, while old‐growth plots prioritise maintenance and cell structure. Sustainable livestock management plays a crucial role in food production, climate change mitigation, and cultural preservation. Our study aimed to identify and analyse the diversity of social–ecological conditions that characterize extensive livestock systems in southern Patagonia. We integrated data collected from interviews and secondary sources and analysed data using hierarchical cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling to identify distinct ranching types. A qualitative analysis of key informant interviews identified key social–ecological changes for each type. The results emphasize the impact of administration, production, and biophysical factors on shaping different livestock ranching schemes. Further, we identified three significant social–ecological changes driving the dynamics of these systems, including shifts from (1) sheep to cattle ranching, (2) domestic to feral cattle ranching, and (3) landowners to tenant land managers. These findings have implications for policymakers seeking to develop strategies tailored to diverse realities, ensuring the sustainability of livestock systems in Tierra del Fuego. In the post-Cold War world order, the African Continent has been a stage for some of the most violent intra-state conflicts arising from natural resources and land distribution. These contestations have often been inter-communal and take the violent extremism route. The consequences of these devastating contestations have been apocalyptic in most of these conflicts. In Kenya's Mount Elgon Region, the emergence of extremism Sabaot Land Defence Forces and counter-extremist groups is rooted in a long historical struggle for equitable distribution of land rights. Despite efforts by state and non-state actors, sustainable peace remains a distant mirage. Socio-economic determinants have emerged as fundamental determinants in these extremist contestations, yet, extant literature has been silent on this subject matter. This paper sought to interrogate socio-demographic determinants as pathways for homegrown extremism in the Mount Elgon Region. Study findings revealed strong support for the interplay between ownership of land, source of income, level of education, and sustenance of homegrown extremism over land-use conflicts in the study area. The paper recommends the need for the Ministry of Lands to expedite the management of the historical land question to contain the socio-demographic determinants as pathways for homegrown extremism in the study area. The findings underscore the importance of land tenure security in pursuit of peaceful, just, and inclusive societies as advocated for in the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030. Selecting suitable Megacity Solid Waste Disposal (MSWD) sites is a challenging task in densely populated deltas of developing countries, exacerbated by limited public awareness about waste management. One of the major environmental concerns in Dhaka City, the world's densest megacity, is the presence of dumps close to surface water bodies resources. This study employed the Geographic Information System (GIS)-Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) framework to integrate geomorphological (slope and flow accumulation), geological (lithological and lineament), hydrogeological (depth to groundwater table and surface waterbody), socioeconomic (Land use land cover, distance to settlement, road, and airport), and climatological (wind direction) determinants, coupled by land-use and hydro-environmental analyses, to map optimal dumps (MSWDO) sites. The resulting preliminary (MSWDP) map revealed 15 potential landfill areas, covering approximately 5237 hectares (ha). Combining statistical analysis of restricted areas (settlements, water bodies, land use) with AHP-based ratings, the MSWDO map revealed two optimal locations (2285 ha). Additionally, the hydro-environmental analysis confirmed the unsuitability of northern sites due to shallow groundwater (< 5.43 m) and thin clay, leaving 11 options excluded. Sites 12 (Zone A, 2255 ha) and 15 (Zone B, 30 ha), with deeper groundwater tables and thicker clay layers, emerged as optimal choices for minimizing environmental risks and ensuring effective long-term waste disposal. This study successfully integrates remote sensing, geospatial data, and GIS-AHP modeling to facilitate the development of sustainable landfill strategies in similar South Asian delta megacities. Such an approach provides valuable insights for policymakers to implement cost-effective and sustainable waste management plans, potentially minimizing the environmental risks to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6, 11, 13, and 15. The widespread presence of microplastics (MPs) in freshwater systems as an emerging environmental pollutant has caused a global environmental problem. The present study investigates the distribution and abundance of source pathway and abundance of microplastics in surface sediment samples from rivers discharging into the Gorgan Bay, southeast of the Caspian Sea. A total of 57 surface sediment samples were taken from 19 stations to investigate the potential hot spots of pollution in the four rivers leading to the Gorgan Bay. The average level of microplastics was 333 ± 268 particles/kg. The highest amount is in the estuary of the Qarasu River (1080 ± 380 particles/kg) due to the accumulation of fishing, boating and tourism activities and the lowest amount in the forest area (80 ± 19 particles/kg) in the Klak River. The most common type of microplastic was fiber (68%). Microplastic pollution in the studied rivers is mostly black and gray (75.39%), and about 53% of them were sized less than 1000 μm. Spectroscopic analysis (Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) of the MP showed that 37% were polyethylene, polyethylene (37%) and polypropylene (27%) were the dominating groups. The sediments’ size was significantly correlated (p>0.05) with the presence of microplastics. Sediments with a coarse grain (sand) demonstrated a great potential to store microplastics. Erosion is a complex geomorphological process controlled by climate, soil and vegetation characteristics in addition to land-use. However, the interplay of these drivers is not fully understood. Here we present a 11.8 ka multi-proxy record of geochemical, mineral magnetic and grain size analyses from Lake Stiucii, in the Transylvania lowlands (CE Europe) documenting past erosional activity and the drivers of landscape change. We identify three major phases in the site's development. The first, a lacustrine phase (11.8–10.9 cal ka BP), is characterised by open water conditions with significant river inflow and depicts a period of greater erosion under a less developed catchment vegetation cover. Between 10.9 and 4.6 cal ka BP, the lake became a wetland characterised by shallow water with a reduced drainage network under warmer climate and/or reduced rainfall. From 4.6 cal ka BP, a second lacustrine phase developed driven by enhanced stream flow and sediment input subsequently accelerated by land use change. On a millennial scale, the two significant changes in the lake-catchment system and erosion regime at 10.9 and 4.6 cal ka BP may reflect a response to fluctuations in large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns. The eight short-term erosional events identified at 10.6, 7.8 cal ka BP, between 4.4–4.1, 3.5, 3.0–2.5, 1.9, 1.5, 1.1–0.8 cal ka BP, overlap well-known climate events. However, from 4.6 cal ka BP the climate-landscape relationship is amplified by rising anthropogenic impacts. Our data provide critical information on the paleoenvironmental evolution of CE Europe's lowlands and facilitate discussion of the effects of millennial and centennial climatic shifts as expressed in the local environment. In this study, surface dust samples were collected within the second ring road of Shenyang City under different land-use types, and the concentration and chemical speciation of metals in different particle sizes under different land-use types were analyzed. Dust samples were separated into four particle size fractions (＜50, 50–100, 100–500, 500–2000 μm), and particles in the range of 100–500 µm were the highest representing one-third of the dust mass. The results revealed that metals were detected in order Zn > Cr > Pb > Cu > Ni > As > Cd in different particle sizes of dust under different land-use types. The relative contribution of individual particle-size fractions for seven metals was different, but the results showed preferential partitioning to small particle-size fractions. The relative contribution of metals in individual particle-size fractions and chemical speciation were significantly affected by the type of land use. Metals concentrated on the smaller particles in the traffic area, and the particles (<50 µm) contained the highest percentage of metals but Cr. The residual fractions (F5) of Ni, Cr, As and Cu overall represented the predominant portion in different particle size of fractions under different land-use types, Zn and Pb were mostly bound to the Fe–Mn oxides-bound fraction (F3), and the exchangeable fraction (F1) accounted for a relatively large proportion of Cd. The results of the risk assessment code (RAC) of Cd indicated that the risk of Zn was medium, and it was high for Cd in the dust of Shenyang City. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Late Bronze Age is characterized by the increasing homogenization of material culture and the prevalence of urn burials. The cemetery of Inzersdorf, located in the Lower Traisen Valley, Austria, is used to investigate whether changes in burial practices during the Late Bronze Age were locally driven or influenced by external factors. This study interprets strontium isotope data from 215 calcined human bone samples in the context of a local baseline established from 163 modern plant samples (55 locations) within a 10 km radius of Inzersdorf. Complementary Correspondence Analysis and 14C dates were used to identify chronological changes. The high-density sampling carried out in the Traisen Valley for bioavailable strontium (BASr) enabled the differentiation of people who mainly sourced their food from the valley or the hills. A diachronic shift in land use was identified, with the main food resource obtained from the hills for the earlier and the valley providing most of the foods for the later phase of the cemetery, which is more distinct in men than in women. Five individuals with isotopic values that differed from the main population were identified, one of which has an 87Sr/86Sr of 0.7061 falling below the BASr baseline created with the modern plant data. While the latter may indicate metal-related travel, the other four individuals may be interpreted as inhabitants of single farmsteads. Additionally, an individual with a significant shift in isotopic values between the petrous bone and long bone was identified, indicating changing local food sources over the individual’s life. Water erosion is one of the most extensive processes of soil and land degradation. This process significantly deteriorates the quality of ecosystem services provided. Studying the mechanism and consequences of this phenomenon will help develop strategies to mitigate its impact on the environment. One of the challenges in studying water erosion is the high cost of conducting field research over large areas. Another challenge is the limitation of existing models, which are often developed for specific regions. Our research aims to address these problems by adapting the widely used RUSLE2 model to local conditions. Beijing was chosen as the study area due to its rich information resources and extensive results from field measurements of soil water erosion. Calculations were performed using a raster data model, which included a slope angle model, slope length, soil erodibility, rainfall erosion potential factors from precipitation and snowmelt, land use types, and vegetation cover management factors. All data were taken from open sources. The average soil erosion in the studied area was 25 t · ha–1 per year. The discrepancy with other studies was less than 1%. The ‘leitmotif’ of the compact city has become a widely embraced template for sustainable urban development. Particularly infill and redevelopment areas, as well as many planned new settlements, have been built following the planning principles of urban compaction. Numerous positive effects are attributed to high-density settlements such as more efficient use of infrastructure and less reliance on automobile travel. Planning law and policies, in Germany as well as other countries around the world, regularly strive to advance high-density developments, but it is by no means clear whether the prescribed densities in planning policies actually lead to vibrant and healthy places which fulfill the expectations of their inhabitants with regards to their quality of life. The study aims to analyze the relation between binding land-use plans in Germany and individual perceptions of urban density through a case study-based survey. This paper contributes to providing new information on achieving compact urban form and quality of life in new urban quarters by analyzing the change of densities over the past three decades in ‘large’ urban developments across Germany, by an in-depth assessment of planned and built densities within an archetypal urban extension and finally by contrasting these ‘objective’ figures and findings with the ‘subjective’ feelings of inhabitants. For sources of information, this paper draws from literature, surveys and empirical analyses as well as desktop-studies.

Introduction: Rational use and protection of natural grasslands within legal frameworks to regulate rangeland management and prevent land degradation, especially in countries with extensive grasslands, are crucial. Land-use change from grasslands to hand-planted forests can negatively affect soil properties and biodiversity. This change may lead to a decrease in soil organic carbon reserves, an increase in apparent density, and a change in soil pH. It also has significant impacts on soil macroinvertebrates, leading to changes in their communities' structure and subsequent ecosystem functioning. Given the substantial role of soil macroinvertebrates in ecosystem performance, preserving biodiversity and food webs through their diverse ecological services, including pollination, pest suppression, and energy cycling, is essential. The reduction of soil macroinvertebrates can have negative effects on soil structure, decomposition processes, infiltration, and gas exchange, potentially resulting in land degradation and a decline in the quality of ecological services. Therefore, the preservation and enhancement of soil macroinvertebrates are of paramount importance and play a vital role in maintaining ecosystem balance and stability. They are also sensitive to human disturbances and are used as biological indicators for such interference with soil components. The overall aim of this study is to investigate the effects of land-use change on soil macroinvertebrates. Therefore, in this research, soil macroinvertebrates and their community structures were examined between rangelands and artificially planted forests.Materials and Methods: Sampling was conducted from the Lavizan Forest Park and its surrounding rangelands in Tehran during the spring season using the quadrat sampling method. Two sites were selected for each reigon. Each site was examined using six quadrats (0.5 m × 0.5 m). In each quadrat, soil macroinvertebrates were collected from the soil surface and depth (0-10 cm). A total of 446 samples were collected and classified into 51 morphOTUs in the planted forest and 68 morphOTUs in the rangeland based on morphological characteristics. To compare the diversity between the planted and rangeland areas, richness and diversity indices (Shannon-Wiener, Margalef, and Evenness) were calculated. Soil physicochemical properties, including soil texture (sand, silt and clay), magnesium, calcium, organic carbon, total nitrogen, biomass, and pH, were evaluated to investigate their relationship with soil macroinvertebrates.Results: The results showed that abundance was higher in rangelands than in hand-planted forests. Also, Shannon-Wiener and Evenness indices for soil macroinvertebrates in the rangelands were higher than in the hand-planted forests, indicating a significant difference between diversity and richness indices. Additionally, the results of beta diversity methods showed that turnover between the two regions occurred. The findings of the canonical correlation analysis between the main taxonomic groups and physicochemical properties showed that different variables in rangelands and hand-planted forests had an impact on macroinvertebrate communities. Discussion: The results of this study showed that land-use change from rangeland to planted forests can significantly affect the biodiversity and community structure of invertebrates. Many studies have demonstrated that land-use change can lead to changes in the density and species richness of invertebrates over time. In many cases, species sensitive to disturbance are lost and replaced by other species, resulting in a substitution between invertebrate communities. This study also found significant changes in the composition of macroinvertebrate communities following land-use change. In general, the conversion of rangeland to planted forest can lead to the restoration of biodiversity in macroinvertebrate communities over time. Despite the observed changes in community composition, forests that have been planted for many years have had enough time to recover. Given the significant increase in land-use change, especially in recent decades, comprehensive information on the impact of human disturbances on soil organisms is essential for addressing conservation issues.

To understand climate change in the local context, it is necessary to analyse three factors in the territories; 1) how temperature and precipitation have varied over time, 2) if there is an association with the natural variation of the planet, for example with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon, and 3) if the variations could be related to human actions that directly alter the climate, such as gas emissions into the atmosphere and deforestation. Understanding how these three factors interact, what impacts they have caused on the territory and how they will behave in future scenarios, allows us to think about development planning strategies that seek to adapt human communities to future climate conditions. This study addresses climate change in the City of Tepic, analysing the interannual variation of temperature and precipitation, its association with the ENSO phenomenon and the possible relationship with the urban heat island, contrasting two time periods; 1980-1999 and 2000-2018. The results showed a generalised increase of +1 ºC between periods, decrease of precipitation up to -6% the summer months and increase up to +20% the autumn months. The influence of ENSO on temperature variation increased from 10% to 20% in the most recent period, and its influence on precipitation variation decreased from 17% to 8%, respectively. On the other hand, the heat island increased its extension by more than 60% and its intensity by about 8 degrees between the periods analysed. The differences between periods are discussed descriptively in relation to the doubling of the area of urban use, population, atmospheric emissions and the loss of 30% of the forests in the areas adjacent to the city.

Terracing is a widely adopted agricultural practice in mountainous regions around the world that aims to conserve soil and water resources. Soil nutrients play a crucial role in determining soil quality, particularly in landscapes prone to drought. They are influenced by factors such as land-use type, slope aspect, and altitude. In this study, we sought to examine the impact of terracing on soil nutrients (soil organic content (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), nitrate-nitrogen (NO3–-N), ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), total phosphorus (TP), available phosphorus (AP), total potassium (TK), and available potassium (AK)) and how they vary with environmental factors in the Chinese Loess Plateau. During the growing season, we collected 540 soil samples from the 0 to 100 cm soil layer across five major land-use types, different slope aspects, and varying altitudes. Additionally, a meta-analysis of literature data further corroborated the effective accumulation of soil nutrients through terracing in the Loess Plateau. Our findings are as follows: (1) Terraced fields, regardless of land-use type, showed a significant improvement in SOC and TN content. (2) Soil nutrient contents within terraced fields were predominantly higher on sunny slopes. (3) Terraces at lower altitudes are characterized by elevated SOC concentrations. (4) A meta-analysis of literature data pertaining to terracing and soil nutrients in this region confirmed the effective accumulation of soil nutrients through terracing. The elucidated outcomes of this study offer a profound theoretical underpinning for the accurate planning and management of terraces, the scientific utilization of land resources, and the enhancement of land productivity.

The environment of an organism exerts selective pressures that affect mobility, feeding, reproduction as well as predator–prey and conspecific interactions. Land use changes induced by human activities modify these selective pressures and may result in the adaptation of organisms. Amphibians are ectotherms that typically show a biphasic life cycle with an aquatic and terrestrial phase, which makes them particularly sensitive to environmental change. We studied the impact of habitat modifications on palmate newt populations in the Ile de France region across four types of habitats: urban, mixed, agricultural, and natural with at least two replicates for each habitat type. We measured the morphology of newts using callipers, quantified maximal running and swimming speed and acceleration using high‐speed video recordings, and quantified the swelling of the hind limb linked to an inflammatory reaction. Our results show that in urban habitats, newts are larger and heavier and have a better body condition. Females, moreover, have a larger head in natural habitats, possibly due to diet specialisation of females during the breeding season. In mixed and agricultural habitats, newts have longer limbs and show a tendency to run faster, possibly associated with the selective pressures on movement in mixed habitats. Differences in inflammatory responses were observed between sexes but not habitat types. Overall, our results show differences in morphology and trends for differences in performance in newts living in different habitats suggesting that animals are adapting to human‐induced changes in their environment. Since 2013, Minawao, in Cameroon's Far North region, has been home to a camp for Nigerian refugees fleeing the violence perpetrated by the Boko Haram movement. The long-term establishment of the base has significantly impacted all aspects of the locality, particularly the environment. This article focuses on the influence of the refugee camp's presence on the territory of Minawao and its surroundings, emphasising changes in vegetation cover and land-use dynamics. The article was carried out using a methodology that included household surveys, cartographic analysis, and the collection of testimonies in the field. The investigation results reveal that the camp installation first led to declining agricultural and grazing activities. Secondly, the cutting of wood by the refugees has further degraded the region's vegetation cover, particularly in the forest reserve, showing a regression rate of minus 37.38% between 2015 and 2022. Lastly, the land occupied by the camp has gradually grown to exceed 1,493.11 ha of the area initially granted, and signs of soil degradation, mainly erosion (77.04%), are already visible. Initiatives have been implemented to combat this environmental degradation, including the "Make Minawao Green Again" project, activities to promote ecological charcoal and improved stoves, and waves of formal repatriation of refugees. However, these measures have not yet produced satisfactory results due to socio-economic and cultural constraints. Pollinator activity is affected by landscape‐scale flower availability, and by pollinator interactions with co‐occurring organisms. Of special interest are potentially detrimental effects of herbivores on the attractiveness of plants to pollinators. While insect herbivores are abundant in natural and agro‐ecosystems, the combined effect of herbivory and landscape floral resources on pollinator activity and the delivery of pollination services is little studied and understood. Here we investigated the combined effects of surrounding flower cover and aphid herbivory on pollination services in agricultural landscapes. We apply a resource landscape approach for mapping the spatial distribution of floral resources across landscapes, using neighbourhood modelling and empirical data on flower availability in specific land‐use types. In each of 25 Mediterranean landscapes spanning a gradient of land‐use intensity ranging from natural to agricultural, we established paired patches of potted aphid‐infested or aphid‐free phytometer plants Diplotaxis erucoides. In each patch, we recorded the activity of insects visiting flowers and subsequent seed set. We also recorded the relative abundance of flowers in dominant land‐use locales within a 1 km radius of each patch. Neighbourhood analyses revealed that plant–pollinator interactions in our study system are shaped by herbivory, distribution of floral resources across the landscape, and the interaction between these factors. We found a negative competitive effect of flower cover on pollinator activity and phytometer seed‐set; this effect was stronger on aphid‐infested than aphid‐free plants. The main pollinator guilds in the study sites (wild bees, honeybees and non‐bee pollinators) responded differently to these factors. Our results highlight the importance of combining a resource landscape approach with the exploration of interactions among different organisms, when mapping pollination services and identifying the scale at which pollinators respond to foraging resources. With increasing urbanization and industrialization, soil and forest resources are facing considerable pressure, as well as the demand for water for domestic, agricultural, and industrial activities. Therefore, it is essential to conduct regular assessments of water quality and ensure that water is consistently maintained in the context of ecosystem services (ESs). Our objective was to apply the driving forces–pressures–state–impacts–responses (DPSIR) model to understand the cause–effect relationships and interactions with anthropogenic pressures on deforestation and water quality in the Talgua River watershed and associated valley and plain areas in central-eastern Honduras. Physicochemical and microbiological analyses were conducted to determine the water quality index (NSF–WQI) and other contamination indexes. The results identified high contamination by coliforms, up to 920.00 NPM/100 mL, and high levels of contamination by organic matter (ICOMO, 0.65), solids (ICOSUS, 0.79), mineralization (ICOMI, 0.99), and the presence of bacteria (BPI, 8.50), as well as the development of eutrophication processes (ICOTRO), resulting in generally low water quality. These problems were caused by the socio-demographic and economic growth of the area, as well as the high demand for water, vulnerability to climate change, and intense agro-livestock and industrial activity, which led to deforestation processes, changes in land use, and contamination of natural water bodies that impacted the overexploitation of aquifers. After applying the DPSIR model, strategies are proposed for the management and administration of the watershed aimed at preserving the water, soils, and forest resources, while promoting stakeholder, business, education sector, and public administration participation. Understanding the spatial–temporal patterns of air pollution is crucial for mitigation strategies, a task fostered nowadays by the generation of continuous concentration maps by remote sensing technologies. We applied spatial modelling to analyze such spatial–temporal patterns in Lombardy, Italy, one of the most polluted regions in Europe. We conducted monthly spatial autocorrelation (global and local) of the daily average concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, O3, NO2, SO2, and CO from 2016 to 2020, using 10 × 10 km satellite data from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), aggregated on districts of approximately 100,000 population. Land-use classes were computed on identified clusters, and the significance of the differences was evaluated through the Wilcoxon rank-sum test with Bonferroni correction. The global Moran's I autocorrelation was overall high (>0.6), indicating a strong clustering. The local autocorrelation revealed high–high clusters of PM2.5 and PM10 in the central urbanized zones in winter (January–December), and in the agrarian southern districts in summer and autumn (May–October). The temporal decomposition showed that values of PMs are particularly high in winter. Low–low clusters emerged in the northern districts for all the pollutants except O3. Seasonal peaks for O3 occurred in the summer months, with high–high clusters mostly in the hilly and mildly urban districts in the northwest. Traffic noise is emerging as major challenge for cities in India. It affects human health in terms of annoyance and other major health problems. This study aims to develop a traffic noise model for mid-sized cities. Vehicle noise and spot speed of individual vehicles were studied to develop a reference energy mean emission level (REMEL) by using the sound level meter from a reference distance of 7.5 m from the centerline of a nearby lane under free flow condition. This urban traffic noise model is specific to different geographical regions and depends on vehicle categories and characteristics of in use vehicles. Subsequently, mid-block studies were conducted for measuring traffic noise Leq (in dB(A)), average speed, and traffic volumes of different vehicle categories. To develop the traffic noise prediction model, physical condition of the road, carriageway width, width of the footpath, median size, number of lanes, and ground cover (hard or soft) need to be accounted for. A modified traffic noise prediction model has been developed using REMEL models and different adjustment factors. Subsequently, the correlation analysis was performed between predicted and observed Leq (in dB(A)) to check the model fitness by correlation coefficient R2 = 0.76 and mean absolute percentage error is ranged from 0.8 to 1.2% for the predicted and observed Leq at all the selected sites of measurement periods for the Kanpur city. The emergence of the metaverse has led to the rapidly increasing demand for the generation of extensive 3D worlds. We consider that an engaging world is built upon a rational layout of multiple land-use areas (e.g., forest, meadow, and farmland). To this end, we propose a generative model of land-use distribution that learns from geographic data. The model is based on a transformer architecture that generates a 2D map of the land-use layout, which can be conditioned on spatial and semantic controls, depending on whether either one or both are provided. This model enables diverse layout generation with user control and layout expansion by extending borders with partial inputs. To generate high-quality and satisfactory layouts, we devise a geometric objective function that supervises the model to perceive layout shapes and regularize generations using geometric priors. Additionally, we devise a planning objective function that supervises the model to perceive progressive composition demands and suppress generations deviating from controls. To evaluate the spatial distribution of the generations, we train an autoencoder to embed land-use layouts into vectors to enable comparison between the real and generated data using the Wasserstein metric, which is inspired by the Fréchet inception distance. Traditional village tourism significantly shapes the dynamic interaction between human-land relations and contributes to the evolution of three key land uses: ecological, production, and living. It is worthwhile to study the relationship between tourism and land use evolution, both theoretically and practically. Chengyang Eight Villages Scenic Area (CYEVSA) in China offers an extraordinary cultural heritage experience, which is an ideal venue for such investigations. We examined quantitative information regarding the tourism industry and the evolution of ecological, production, and living land uses based on satellite remote sensing data obtained from CYEVSA in 2006, 2015, and 2021. This analysis focused on two primary aspects: land type area and dynamics. Using both the global Moran index and the local Moran index, we investigated the evolutionary characteristics of these three land uses. Our analysis revealed a consistent growth trend in the tourism industry, as well as the proportion of production and living land usage. Notably, tourism has a slight negative impact on ecological land use. Additionally, the tourism industry triggers discernible land use conversions within the production and living land use categories. Production and living activities encroached observably on ecological land. Furthermore, while the tourism industry mitigated the clustering of these land use types and drove land use conversion, it also exhibited spatial heterogeneity. The tourism industry needs to explore and enhance its resources within CYEVSA, diversify its formats, and broaden its reach gradually to encompass all eight villages. Through strategic CYEVSA planning, it is crucial to designate necessary development uses for tourism, proactively plan and target land reserve development for the tourism industry and leverage the positive impact of tourism in facilitating the conversion of these three land uses. Our research advances land use optimization for traditional village tourism, including an exploration of how tourism development interacts with land uses.

Study region: Gin River Basin, Sri Lanka. Study focus: The individual and combined effects of climate and land-use changes on flood flow and inundation in the Gin River basin, Sri Lanka, were assessed. Downscaled, bias-corrected future precipitation projected by an ensemble of general circulation models (GCMs) under the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 emissions scenario was input into a flood model developed using the Rainfall Runoff Inundation (RRI) model. Possible flood mitigation measures were identified based on flood simulations through the integrated assessment incorporating future climate and land-use projections. New hydrological insights for the region: The basin is projected to receive increased rainfall during the southwest monsoon (9.7 %) and second inter-monsoon (15.7 %) seasons, excluding March and April, in the future. Human settlements will expand in the downstream areas of the basin, while a significant share of agricultural land (27 %) in the basin will be converted into shrublands by 2050. High flows are predicted to increase by 16 % and 4 % at the upstream and downstream gauging stations, respectively, while mean river flow is expected to decrease by 25 % (upstream) and 34 % (downstream). In addition, a 3.5 % increase in annual maximum inundation extent is projected. However, the total inundation extent in the basin can be reduced by 1.3 % by regulating land-use changes, particularly the conversion of agricultural land into riparian forests.

IntroductionPilot studies are important initial steps in research, providing a preliminary assessment of the practicality, feasibility, and potential challenges of a proposed study. This study attempts to assess the feasibility, practicality, and acceptability of a study that integrates a human–animal contact (HAC) questionnaire, animal biodiversity survey using acoustic analysis, and zoonotic disease investigation in animals among rural households in the Central River Region (CRR) of The Gambia. The pilot study revealed granular insights that would otherwise go unnoticed, providing vital information that directly guided the design and implementation of the subsequent full-scale study on zoonotic disease risk.MethodsA pilot study was conducted in five villages in the CRR of The Gambia. Community sensitization was carried out together with the village leadership, followed by a familiarization tour of the study setting. Questionnaire-based interview was conducted among participants (n = 50) randomly selected to assess the acceptability and reliability of the questionnaire. The feasibility and acceptability of biodiversity surveys and animal sampling were assessed using verbal inquiries from participants and community leaders.ResultsThe recruitment rate was 96%, and most participants, 50 out of 52, were willing to participate without compensation for lost time during interviews. For animal sampling, 45 out of 50 participants were willing to allow the study team to sample blood and feces from their animals without any form of incentive. All five village heads agreed to the usage of sound recorders to be placed within their community for animal biodiversity assessment. For the survey effort, one field assistant interviewed 25 participants per week. It took a total of 1 h to complete an interview, including random household selection, consenting, and questionnaire interview.DiscussionThe pilot study confirmed the feasibility of the research and informed the design of the larger study. Key parameters, such as community access, acceptability, recruitment success, and logistical requirements, contributed to robust sample size calculations and realistic project cost estimates. Additionally, the study enabled the research team to familiarize themselves with the communities and refine the methods for the full study.

Climate change affects life in tropical landscapes by increasing temperatures, among other impacts. In addition, land transformation from forest to other land cover types typically increases temperatures of surfaces exposed to direct solar radiation. In rural areas, however, many organisms including humans live sheltered below canopies, but little is known about below-canopy surface temperatures. We assessed canopy leaf area index (LAI) and below-canopy surface temperatures in a landscape of rural lowland Sumatra, Indonesia. In this region, land-use trajectories in the past decades led from forest to monocultural plantations. We found that LAI varied more than 10-fold, with the highest values observed in forest and low values in rubber and oil palm plantations. Below-canopy surface temperatures increased significantly with decreasing LAI. A decrease in LAI by one unit (m2 leaf area per m2 ground area) increased ground surface temperature by 0.95 °C (confidence interval: 1.07–0.83 °C) around noon. Likewise, the temperatures measured on peoples’ cap or hijab surfaces under the canopy was strongly affected. For a light-brown hijab, the average noon surface temperature increased by 4.0 °C from forest to oil palm. Thus, in addition to climate warming, land transformation and associated declines in canopy LAI significantly increased below-canopy surface temperatures. Strategies for mitigating such potentially adverse temperature effects may include the integration of more and densely foliated trees into landscapes.

In a study published in Global Change Biology, Dickie et al. examined the effects of climate and habitat alteration on white-tailed deer density. They found that both factors contribute to deer densities, but climate plays a particularly strong role. A critique by Barnas et al. raised concerns about data transformations and model overfitting, but Dickie et al. argue that these criticisms are unfounded or align with their original conclusions. They emphasize that management decisions must consider the impact of climate change, which is predicted to increase in the future, in order to address the decline of woodland caribou populations. In addition, changes in land use and climate are known as two important and influential factors in discharge. In this research, four climate change models including HADGEM2-ES, GISS-E-R, CSIRO-M-K-3-6-0, and CNRM-CM5.0 under two extreme scenarios RCP2.6 and RCP8.5 were used as climate change scenarios in the future period of 2020-2050. The future land use scenario (2050) was prepared using the CA-Markov algorithm in IDRISI software using land use maps in 1983 and 2020. The SWAT model was calibrated to better simulate hydrological processes from 1984 to 2012 and validated from 2013 to 2019 and was used to evaluate the separate and combined effects of climate change and land use on discharge. The prediction of the climate change impact on discharge showed a decrease in most of the models under the two scenarios RCP2.6 and RCP8.5. The average maximum decrease and increase under the RCP2.6 scenario is 60 and 30 percent, respectively. This significant reduction is greater than that predicted under the RCP8.5 scenario. Examining the combined effects of climate and land use change revealed that the average decrease in discharge in the months of October, November, December, and January under two scenarios is 46.2 and 58%, respectively. The average increase in discharge is predicted to be 47% under the RCP8.5 in the months of April and May in the HadGEM2ES.

Stable isotopic compositions of carbon and nitrogen (δ13C, δ15N) of archaeological grains/seeds recovered from different cultural layers of an Indus (Harappan) archaeological site 4MSR (29°12'87.2"N; 73°9'421"E; Binjor, western Rajasthan, India) provide insights into the Harappan agriculture between ~2900 to ~1800 BCE. The δ13C values were used to retrieve hydrological status, while δ15N values were used to gauge agricultural intensification. Isotopic data of grains/seeds were generated representing three Indus phases (i) Early phase (~2900−2600 BCE), (ii) Transitional phase (~2600−2500 BCE), and (iii) Mature phase (~2500−1800 BCE). We find δ13C values of barley grains (winter crop) varied in overlapping ranges for all the three phases −21.34‰ ± 1.9; −22.55‰ ± 1.6 and −22.75‰ ± 1.7 respectively (n=10 for each phase) indicating insignificant changes in hydrology for winter crops. For summer crops like cotton, average δ13C values for Transitional phase −23.44‰ ± 1.8 were not significantly different from those of Mature phase −22.55‰ ± 2.5. The δ15Nbarley values varied in wider range, however, intra-phase variability appears to have overlapping values but showing overall increase from Early (7.72‰ ± 1.8) to Mature phase (11.17‰±7.2) indicating a plausible agricultural intensification. We also measured δ13C of host soil organic matter (SOM) and sediment δ15N to assess regional environmental conditions. In contrast to the trends observed for archaeological grains/seeds, δ13CSOM values showed a statistically significant enriching trend from Early (−23.54‰ ± 1.4) to Mature phase (−20.40‰ ± 1.9) hinting a growing aridity in the region. We surmise that Harappan farmers of western Rajasthan region might be managing arable hydrological conditions in their fields through agricultural interventions to continue agriculture practices despite growing aridity in the vicinity. The high proportion of water-demanding crop cotton during the Mature phase despite of changing environmental conditions, also corroborate our interpretation, possibly grown for the trade purposes. Context: This study examined how human-induced landscape changes affected bird diversity in mountain villages with mixed forests and cultivated fields. Objectives: We focused on the bird species composition (beta diversity) to determine whether species homogenization varied with forest cover differences. This study developed it as a novel metric potentially quantifying homogenization level comparison in species functional groups. Methods: Bird surveys were conducted at 27 sites with forest cover scattered from 0 to 100%. Bird species were divided into forest birds and nonforest birds. Beta diversity was partitioned into turnover and nestedness-resultant components, and their contribution ratio to Sørensen beta was used to examine the effect of forest cover and pairwise cover difference. Results: Our results indicated that forest birds exhibited low turnover and low nestedness, whereas nonforest birds exhibited nestedness distribution characteristics. The nestedness-resultant contribution ratio of nonforest birds was higher, driven by forest cover difference (slope = 0.0080, Pseudo R2 = 0.35**) than that of forest birds (slope = 0.0018, Pseudo R2 = 0.02**). Thus, we quantify the result of forest cover decreased lead to the dominated by nestedness species in nonforest birds. Conclusions: These findings highlight the distinct effects of environmental changes on these two bird functional groups. Although the Sørensen beta diversity increases with forest cover decrease, most are contributed by nestedness-resultant nonforest birds and lead to homogenization. Thus, it is recommended that conservation plans should separately address forest and nonforest bird species to avoid the risk of underestimating species homogenization due to anthropogenic land-use and habitat degradation. Wood pastures have been characteristic farming types in the Pannonian biogeographical region over the centuries. In the present work, we studied wood-pastures of typical geographical locations in the North Hungarian Mountain Range of Hungary characterized by similar environmental conditions but grazed by different livestock. The sample area of Cserépfalu was grazed by Hungarian Grey Cattle, while the Erdőbénye was grazed by Hungarian Racka Sheep. Coenological records of the sites were collected from 2012 to 2021 in the main vegetation period according to the Braun-Blanquet method with the application of 2 × 2 m sampling quadrats, where the coverage estimated by percentage for each present species was also recorded. To evaluate the state of vegetation, 'ecological ordering' distribution, diversity, and grassland management values were used. Between the two areas, the grazing pressure of the two studied livestock produced different results. Based on the diversity values, woody–shrubby–grassland mosaic diversity values were high (Shannon diversity: 2.21–2.87). Cattle grazing resulted in a variable and mosaic-like shrubby area with high cover values. Based on our results, grazing by cattle provides an adequate solution for forming and conserving wood-pasture habitats in the studied areas of Hungary. However, if the purpose is to also form valuable grassland with high grassland management values, partly sheep grazing should be suggested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Agricultural intensification at field and landscape scales, including increased use of agrochemicals and loss of semi‐natural habitats, is a major driver of insect declines and other community changes. Efforts to understand and mitigate these effects have traditionally focused on ecological responses. At the same time, adaptations to pesticide use and habitat fragmentation in both insects and flowering plants show the potential for rapid evolution. Yet we lack an understanding of how such evolutionary responses may propagate within and between trophic levels with ensuing consequences for conservation of species and ecological functions in agroecosystems. Here, we review the literature on the consequences of agricultural intensification on plant and animal evolutionary responses and interactions. We present a novel conceptualization of evolutionary change induced by agricultural intensification at field and landscape scales and emphasize direct and indirect effects of rapid evolution on ecosystem services. We exemplify by focusing on economically and ecologically important interactions between plants and pollinators. We showcase available eco‐evolutionary theory and plant–pollinator modelling that can improve predictions of how agricultural intensification affects interaction networks, and highlight available genetic and trait‐focused methodological approaches. Specifically, we focus on how spatial genetic structure affects the probability of propagated responses, and how the structure of interaction networks modulates effects of evolutionary change in individual species. Thereby, we highlight how combined trait‐based eco‐evolutionary modelling, functionally explicit quantitative genetics, and genomic analyses may shed light on conditions where evolutionary responses impact important ecosystem services. Anthropogenic habitat alteration and climate change are two well‐known contributors to biodiversity loss through changes to species distribution and abundance; yet, disentangling the effects of these two factors is often hindered by their inherent confound across both space and time. We leveraged a contrast in habitat alteration associated with the jurisdictional boundary between two Canadian provinces to evaluate the relative effects of spatial variation in habitat alteration and climate on white‐tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) densities. White‐tailed deer are an invading ungulate across much of North America, whose expansion into Canada's boreal forest is implicated in the decline of boreal caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou), a species listed as Threatened in Canada. We estimated white‐tailed deer densities using 300 remote cameras across 12 replicated 50 km2 landscapes over 5 years. White‐tailed deer densities were significantly lower in areas where winter severity was higher. For example, predicted deer densities declined from 1.83 to 0.35 deer/km2 when winter severity increased from the lowest value to the median value. There was a tendency for densities to increase with increasing habitat alteration; however, the magnitude of this effect was approximately half that of climate. Our findings suggest that climate is the primary driver of white‐tailed deer populations; however, understanding the mechanisms underpinning this relationship requires further study of over‐winter survival and fecundity. Long‐term monitoring at the invasion front is needed to evaluate the drivers of abundance over time, particularly given the unpredictability of climate change and increasing prevalence of extreme weather events. Defining the environmental occurrence and distribution of chemicals of emerging concern (CECs), including pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in coastal aquatic systems, is often difficult and complex. In this study, 70 compounds representing several classes of pharmaceuticals, including antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, insect repellant, antibacterial, antidepressants, chemotherapy drugs, and X-ray contrast media compounds, were found in dreissenid mussel (zebra/quagga; Dreissena spp.) tissue samples. Overall concentration and detection frequencies varied significantly among sampling locations, site land-use categories, and sites sampled proximate and downstream of point source discharge. Verapamil, triclocarban, etoposide, citalopram, diphenhydramine, sertraline, amitriptyline, and DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) comprised the most ubiquitous PPCPs (> 50%) detected in dreissenid mussels. Among those compounds quantified in mussel tissue, sertraline, metformin, methylprednisolone, hydrocortisone, 1,7-dimethylxanthine, theophylline, zidovudine, prednisone, clonidine, 2-hydroxy-ibuprofen, iopamidol, and melphalan were detected at concentrations up to 475 ng/g (wet weight). Antihypertensives, antibiotics, and antidepressants accounted for the majority of the compounds quantified in mussel tissue. The results showed that PPCPs quantified in dreissenid mussels are occurring as complex mixtures, with 4 to 28 compounds detected at one or more sampling locations. The magnitude and composition of PPCPs detected were highest for sites not influenced by either WWTP or CSO discharge (i.e., non-WWTPs), strongly supporting non-point sources as important drivers and pathways for PPCPs detected in this study. As these compounds are detected at inshore and offshore locations, the findings of this study indicate that their persistence and potential risks are largely unknown, thus warranting further assessment and prioritization of these emerging contaminants in the Great Lakes Basin. Ecosystem valuation (EV) of soil resources is essential for understanding changes in environmental services in monetary terms. A lack of this information, which includes economic indices, hinders the optimal management of natural resources. This study evaluated the influence of changes in the edaphic ecosystem on the EV of the zone of influence of the Ozogoche and Atillo lake systems in Ecuador. The classification was carried out through spectral indices and support vector machines (SVMs), and the EV was determined through opportunity costs including environmental service provisioning and indirect use. The land use and EV classification methods were performed efficiently; the degradation trend was constant. The Modified Water Difference Index was the most efficient in the extraction of water bodies, with an accuracy of 91%. The SVMs algorithm, in recognizing coverage in general, had an overall accuracy of 85%. The adjustment made to the SVMs algorithm to improve the selection of hyperparameters was effective; a robust architecture of the algorithm in terms of automation was achieved. Between 2000 and 2020, moorland, water and wetland degraded by 19%, 2% and 3.4%, respectively. In 2000, the EV as a function of avoided CO2 content was USD 8.00 × 106; in 2010 and 2020, it was USD 6.00 × 106 and USD 5.00 × 106, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The calculation of runoff is continuously considered a difficult analysis to define specific prediction methods in ungauged catchments. This leads to the implementation of an observed model to determine curve number (CN) and estimate peak discharge from ungauged basins. Therefore, this study aimed to modify an experimental NRCS model through fieldwork and conduct sensitivity analysis for relevant modeling procedures. In the analysis, the assessment of CN required land use, soil, infiltration in situ measurement, and Hydrological Soil Group (HSG) parameters for the catchment area. The determination of infiltration rate was also initially carried out using the Horton method (double-ring infiltrometer), accompanied by the evaluation of CN through soil classes and land use parameters. Based on infiltration rate and soil classification, HSG was significantly defined for the catchment area. The results showed that the analytical parameters in rainfall-runoff modeling included the Composite Curve Number (SCS-CN (Iα/S) with a ratio value of 0.2. This was accompanied by the potential retention maximum (S) of 264.37 mm, with the initial proportional abstraction (Iα) being 52.87 at an assumed preliminary coefficient of 0.2. Therefore, the CN composite estimation was 65.5, and the correlation between P and Q was evaluated using graph analysis. The trial CN ranging from 39-74 were also significantly considered to optimize the development models of HEC HMS for the best performance, proving that the improvement of CN was interrelated with discharge. The widespread presence of microplastics (MPs) in freshwater systems as an emerging environmental pollutant has caused a global environmental problem. The present study investigates the distribution and abundance of source pathway and abundance of microplastics in surface sediment samples from rivers discharging into the Gorgan Bay, southeast of the Caspian Sea. A total of 57 surface sediment samples were taken from 19 stations to investigate the potential hot spots of pollution in the four rivers leading to the Gorgan Bay. The average level of microplastics was 333 ± 268 particles/kg. The highest amount is in the estuary of the Qarasu River (1080 ± 380 particles/kg) due to the accumulation of fishing, boating and tourism activities and the lowest amount in the forest area (80 ± 19 particles/kg) in the Klak River. The most common type of microplastic was fiber (68%). Microplastic pollution in the studied rivers is mostly black and gray (75.39%), and about 53% of them were sized less than 1000 μm. Spectroscopic analysis (Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) of the MP showed that 37% were polyethylene, polyethylene (37%) and polypropylene (27%) were the dominating groups. The sediments’ size was significantly correlated (p>0.05) with the presence of microplastics. Sediments with a coarse grain (sand) demonstrated a great potential to store microplastics. The results of this study can be used for the management and protection policies of Gorgan Bay.

Abstract The environment of an organism exerts selective pressures that affect mobility, feeding, reproduction as well as predator–prey and conspecific interactions. Land use changes induced by human activities modify these selective pressures and may result in the adaptation of organisms. Amphibians are ectotherms that typically show a biphasic life cycle with an aquatic and terrestrial phase, which makes them particularly sensitive to environmental change. We studied the impact of habitat modifications on palmate newt populations in the Ile de France region across four types of habitats: urban, mixed, agricultural, and natural with at least two replicates for each habitat type. We measured the morphology of newts using callipers, quantified maximal running and swimming speed and acceleration using high‐speed video recordings, and quantified the swelling of the hind limb linked to an inflammatory reaction. Our results show that in urban habitats, newts are larger and heavier and have a better body condition. Females, moreover, have a larger head in natural habitats, possibly due to diet specialisation of females during the breeding season. In mixed and agricultural habitats, newts have longer limbs and show a tendency to run faster, possibly associated with the selective pressures on movement in mixed habitats. Differences in inflammatory responses were observed between sexes but not habitat types. Overall, our results show differences in morphology and trends for differences in performance in newts living in different habitats suggesting that animals are adapting to human‐induced changes in their environment.

British Columbia (BC) is committed to transitioning to a low-carbon energy system to meet its CO2 emission reduction targets, but this shift towards renewable energy sources may have significant implications for land use. This paper investigates the land-use impacts of different electrification pathways and technology choices in BC's energy system using the BC Nexus model. Our analysis highlights the potential increase in land-use requirements associated with transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, with the occupied land of the power system potentially increasing up to six times larger than the current total build-up land (depending on the scale of electrification and technology choice). These findings have important implications for policymakers in terms of balancing the trade-offs between energy security, economic development, and environmental sustainability. By understanding the physical footprint of the energy transition, decision-makers can develop more effective climate policies and sustainable development strategies.

Over the past decade, ecological connectivity has entered the political agenda, especially within the European transnational context. This evolution has driven the development of structural ecological connectivity and landscape permeability methodologies, such as the Continuum Suitability Index (CSI) presented here, which considers a range of anthropogenic factors that impact ecosystems. Numerous international and national projects have adopted the CSI to assess terrestrial landscape permeability on the macro-regional scale and prioritize areas for the implementation of ecological conservation and restoration measures. Although the CSI methodology has been applied several times, its sensitivity to individual factors, plausibility and ability to maintain consistency and robustness across different data sources and levels of spatial data precision have remained largely unexplored. Here, we presented the conceptual aspects of the CSI methodology, incorporating the outcomes from a literature review and expert workshops, and examined the CSI results for three projects spanning the Alps and Dinaric Mountains. Five key factors—namely, land use, population pressure, landscape fragmentation, environmental protection and topography—were identified as pivotal for analyzing landscape permeability and thus ecological connectivity. Notably, among these factors, population pressure exhibited the highest sensitivity, while fragmentation exerted the least influence on CSI outcomes. When comparing the CSI factors with data on the presence of red-listed species, the environmental protection indicator emerged as the most influential factor. Furthermore, our investigation comparing the different projects indicated that the chosen level of detail and data sources had minimal impact on the CSI results. Collectively, these analyses highlight CSI's adaptability and considerable potential as a versatile and straightforward applicable tool for an initial assessment of ecological connectivity at the macro-regional scale.

With the deepening of transit-oriented development (TOD), the construction of high-density, multi-functional urban spatial structures around public transportation stations has become a significant focus in urban development planning. This study is aimed to explore the spatial and temporal cluster patterns and the relationship between taxi passenger flow and land use types around urban rail transit stations. Taking Beijing as an example, this study extracts the time series of pick-up and drop-off points from the taxi GPS track dataset and employs the affinity propagation (AP) method to conduct the spatial and temporal cluster analysis on these taxi pick-up and drop-off points. Then, based on the urban POI dataset, this study classifies these stations into four functional types by adopting the K-means method. Finally, the partial least squares (PLS) method has been used to explore the relationship between the taxi passenger flow and the land use types under different time intervals. The result indicates that: first, there is a regional aggregation effect for the taxi passenger source in the rail transit station area, and the cluster areas are mainly located in Chaoyang and Haidian districts, as well as along the circular metro line. Besides, there is a significant rush hour in the morning and evening for this passenger flow. Second, the commercial, residential, and comprehensive transit stations are mainly located in the central urban districts of Beijing with balanced spatial distribution, while the industrial transit stations are dispersed to the outer suburbs of the city, which conform to Alonso's spatial distribution of land. Third, there is a significant positive correlation between taxi passenger sources in the rail transit station area and land use types containing transportation service, public facility and daily life service. This study analyses the population mobility and land type cluster form around the urban rail transit from the micro-perspective, which verifies and supplements Alonso's transportation location theory. Therefore, this study contributes to the rational planning of urban spatial resource allocation and the construction of the urban rail transit network.

With more than 50 percent of the global population living in urban areas, Sustainable Development Goal 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities provides a critical lever for us to realise all other SDG goals. This calls for tracking urban spatial development at various levels to facilitate a better understanding of the role, amongst others, of remote sensing data in the field of sustainable urban development and services of general interest to be provided by authorities. Urbanisation patterns may thus be retraced, but also modelled in order to provide evidence for decision makers. Without proper planning, the spatial impacts of urbanisation and subsequent spatial inequalities are more likely to affect disadvantaged groups most. In the last decade of the SDGs, the use of data to inform policies is very critical, and such evidence needs to be anchored in multi-level analysis and ensure vertical and horizontal applications at all governance levels.

Context: The reduction in the abundance and diversity of flowering plant species, mainly due to landscape alteration and consequent habitat loss, negatively affects honey bee populations and is the main driver of their decline. To safeguard pollination service and food security, we need to know how landscape characteristics affect the availability of pollen sources and consequently colony performance across seasons. Objectives: We therefore here explore how seasonality, percentage of semi-natural habitat cover and compositional landscape heterogeneity affect the abundance, richness, diversity and composition of pollen collected by honey bees and the development of their colonies in a Mediterranean area where agro-sylvo-pastoral systems are widely spread. Methods: For the purpose of our study, pollen samples were collected over a year from colonies of Apis mellifera placed in four sampling sites selected across a gradient of landscape heterogeneity and where semi-natural habitats were predominant at various levels within an agro-sylvo-pastoral zone. Simultaneously, the extension of the sealed brood of the same colonies was periodically evaluated. Results: We found that the amount of pollen collected by honey bees was positively correlated with the percentage of semi-natural habitat cover and that increasing habitat diversity at the landscape level had a significant positive effect on the richness and diversity of pollen collected by honey bees. In addition, season significantly affected the amount, diversity and composition of pollen collected by honey bees. Furthermore, bee colony growth was positively correlated with richness, diversity and amount of pollen collected by honey bees. Conclusion: Our study highlights the importance of an abundant and diverse pollen diet for honey bee colony development, which in agro-sylvo-pastoral systems seems to be ensured by a heterogeneous landscape dominated by different types of semi-natural habitats. Soil moisture is the significant hydrologic factor deals with energy balance between the land and the atmosphere. Since the observation of soil moisture at point scale is infrequent and expensive, remote sensing determines the distribution of soil moisture in large scale. In this study, remote sensing techniques have been used to calculate the soil moisture index in the lower Bhavani river basin, Tamil Nadu, India. Landsat 8 satellite data were used for deriving soil moisture in reference with land surface temperature (LST) and normalized difference vegetative index (NDVI). The derived soil moisture was compared to the in situ soil moisture measurements, which were taken at 83 sites at the field level. When a linear regression model was fit between in situ observations and derived soil moisture, a high coefficient of determination (R2) value of 0.83 was found which can be efficiently used for the moisture estimation across greater areas. Since the land-use patterns influences the LST and soil moisture, the variations of these parameters in each land-use classes were studied using independent t test and found that LST demonstrated statistical non-significance (p > 0.05) for each of the studied groups, indicating that each land-use classes temperature were similar, whereas soil moisture in water bodies versus fallow land (p = 0.019), built-ups versus water bodies (p = 0.023), forest versus fallow land (p = 0.018), vegetation versus built-ups (p = 0.028), and built-ups versus forest (p = 0.011) has statistical significance value, which indicates that soil moisture between these compared classes was not similar.
