The Arctic region's unfavorable living conditions adversely affect the spread of infectious diseases, including COVID-19, This, in turn, can also lead to increased morbidity and mortality rates in the area due to a number of factors such as climate, environment, and high prevalence rate of pre-existing health issues like diabetes, obesity, and respiratory infections. These circumstances adversely affect maintaining the level of working capability. The aim of this paper is to investigate the ratio of immunocompetent cells involved in the adaptive post-COVID-19 immune response. The research includes an immunological assessment of 29 women aged 20-40 years residing in Arkhangelsk, Russia, six months after recovering from COVID-19. The count of leukocytes in the peripheral blood and their differ ential were evaluated using standard methods to assess the immunological status. To delve deeper into the immunological landscape, phenotypes of lymphocytes (CD5+, CD8+, CD10+, and CD95+) were evaluated using an indirect immunoperoxidase reaction with monoclonal antibodies on dried drop lymphocyte preparations. After incubating blood with latex molecules, the activity and quantity of phagocytes were assessed using a light microscope. The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio was found to be inverted in the female subjects under investigation. The high concentration of cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CD8+) and lymphocytes with apoptotic receptors (CD95+) suggests a potential correlation with a concurrent reduction in the expression of the total T-cell marker (CD5+) across all cases. This association was further linked to a decrease in lymphoproliferative activity and a relative decline in phagocytic activity. These findings led us to posit that the total recovery time after COVID-19 might extend beyond six months, indicative of a prolonged impact on the body's protective capacity. Our observations prompt the hypothesis that cellular immunity plays a crucial role in determining the severity of COVID-19 infection. Specifically, individuals with initially robust phagocytic activity may be predisposed to experiencing a milder form of the infection. AIMS: This review is focused on the laboratory diagnoses of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) by recognizing the antigen of the causative agent SARS-CoV-2 virus. Various antigen tests are available in this moment and these tests are being further developed in order to reach a better diagnostic value. The issue is reviewed in a complex view. METHODS: In this work, a complex survey of the current literature was made. The relevant and recent papers related to antigen tests of COVID-19 are discussed and cited. Basic specifications of the antigen tests and competitive methods were also scrutinized in the current literature. RESULTS: The survey of the current literature (years 2019 - 2021) was made and diagnostic methods like lateral flow tests (lateral flow immunochromatographic assay) and various types of biosensors were specified as tools for COVID-19 diagnosis and their application to be used as a point-of-care test is considered. CONCLUSIONS: Small hand-held assays applicable in the point-of-care conditions for diagnosis of COVID-19 by analysis of SARS-CoV-2 antigen are the means of a growing interest and these means undergo a significant development leading to the improvements of their specifications and applicability to the current praxis. OBJECTIVE: To analyse the main features of the top 100 (T100) most cited articles in academia and 100 most discussed articles on social media about vitamin D from 1975 to 2021 and compare bibliometric and altmetric analysis. METHODS: 'Vitamin D' was searched from the Web of Science database and Altmetric.com website, and T100 citation and altmetric lists were created, respectively. Articles in both lists were analysed in terms of study type, topic, first author, publication year, citation number and altmetric attention score (AAS). Impact factor (IF) and quartile of journal, in which the articles were published was also examined. RESULTS: The article "Vitamin D Deficiency" by Holick MF, published in the New England Journal of Medicine was the most cited article (n=8492), original scientific paper was the most frequent study type in both lists. No correlation was found between AAS and citation number in both lists (r=0.176, p=0.081; r=0.157, p=0.119, respectively). The journals on the T100 citation list had a statistically significantly higher IF than the journals in the T100 altmetric list (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Altmetric analysis of vitamin D is currently insufficient to replace traditional bibliometric analysis but can provide valuable information about the society's interest. AIM: The aim of this study was to analyse the group of newborns who were admitted at Neonatal Department of Intensive Medicine in Bratislava Faculty of Medicine Comenius University in Bratislava and National Institute of Children's Diseases in the period from 08.01.2021 until 07.07.2023 who were affected by the COVID-19 virus from mother before birth, from staff or in family or were only in contact with COVID-19 positive person. RESULTS: Most common symptoms in newborns within our findings included fever, upper respiratory symptoms, and diarrhoea. Detailed analysis of prenatal and postnatal characteristics, clinical findings are presented in tables 1-3. CONCLUSION: COVID-19 pandemic had a great impact on the pregnant women as well as on prenatal and postnatal development of the child. Our results reveal that the severity of symptoms in COVID-19 infected newborns from our sample was low. It is important to implement adequate neonatal practices for early detection of illnesses, especially in relation to COVID-19 which will subsequently allow early intervention and reduce neonatal mortality. The biological consequences of viral infection result from biochemical, physiological, structural, morphological and genetic changes in infected cells. In productive infections, virus-induced biological changes in cells may be closely related to the efficiency of viral replication or to the recognition of these cells by the immune system. These changes are usually associated with cytocidal viruses, as in the case of the pandemic coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19. Many of these changes are required for effective viral replication. The physiological state of living cells has a significant impact on the outcome of viral infection, as the host cell provides the synthetic machinery, key regulatory molecules and precursors for newly synthesised viral proteins and nucleic acids. This review focuses on novel target cell types for SARS-CoV- 2 exposure outside the respiratory tract. Findings and examples are collected that provide information on virus-cell interactions. The identification of unusual target cells for SARS-CoV-2 may help to explain the diverse symptoms in COVID-19 patients and the long-lasting effects after infection. The presented seroprevalence study focused on specific antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 virus is the second survey conducted among SAS employees. Its realization enabled monitoring of the impact of booster vaccination doses and the spread of the Omicron variant in a defined group of people. The total seropositivity of the involved SAS employees in autumn 2022 was 96.04%. In the group of vaccinated participants (1,189) the seropositivity rate was 99.5%, while among unvaccinated participants (176) it was 72.73%. By October 2022, when the study was conducted, 65.05% (888) of the participants have had a positive PCR/Ag test for SARS-CoV-2 at least once. Based on the presence of antibodies against the nucleoprotein (NCP) of SARS-CoV-2 it was proven, that 27.39% of participants (25.12% of vaccinated; 51.22% of non-vaccinated) who have never had a positive PCR/Ag test for SARS-CoV-2, overcame the COVID-19. According to self-assessment of the disease course, it was shown that a severe course occurred in 6.31% of the participants who overcame the disease without prior vaccination and in 1.44% of the participants who overcame COVID-19 after completing the baseline vaccination scheme. The most significant finding of the study is the evidence of significantly lower levels of specific antibodies after overcoming the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, and thus its reduced immunogenicity compared to ancestral virus and earlier variants of concern. BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) causes acute respiratory illness and multi-organ failure. The critical roles of magnesium in human health suggest that it could have an active role in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. We measured magnesium levels in hospitalized COVID-19 patients concerning disease progression and mortality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted in 2321 hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Clinical characteristics from each patient were recorded, and blood samples were collected from all patients upon their first admission to the hospital to determine serum magnesium levels. Patients were divided into two groups based on discharge or death. The effects of magnesium on death, severity, and hospitalization duration were estimated by crude and adjusted odds ratio using Stata Crop (version 12) software. RESULTS: Mean magnesium levels in patients who died were higher than in discharged patients (2.10 vs 1.96 mg/dl, p 0.05). INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused several negative changes. Increased alcohol consumption has been reported in some studies. This study aimed to compare the level of alcohol consumption among college students in the central and eastern regions of Slovakia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Three Slovak universities were included in the study. The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) was used to determine alcohol consumption. RESULTS: The total number of college students was 3,647. The overall AUDIT score was significantly higher in the eastern region (p < 0.001). Alcohol was not consumed more frequently between regions in men and women (p > 0.05). During a typical drinking day, more alcohol was consumed in the eastern region compared to the central region of Slovakia in men (p < 0.028). Excess drinking by men has been reported in the eastern region compared to the central region (p < 0.048). There was no significant difference between addiction groups in the symptoms (p > 0.05). Inability to remember what happened on a night of drinking was a significant difference in eastern men (p = 0.047). CONCLUSION: Alcohol consumption is a significant problem in Slovakia. The number of students with a high AUDIT score from the eastern region is higher than the number of students with a high AUDIT score from the central region. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) monitoring in air traffic is important in the prevention of the virus spreading from abroad. The gold standard for SARS-CoV-2 detection is RT-qPCR; however, for early and low viral load detection, a much more sensitive method, such as droplet digital PCR (ddPCR), is required. Our first step was to developed both, ddPCR and RT-qPCR methods, for sensitive SARS-CoV-2 detection. Analysis of ten swab/saliva samples of five Covid-19 patients in different stages of disease showed positivity in 6/10 samples with RT-qPCR and 9/10 with ddPCR. We also used our RT-qPCR method for SARS-CoV-2 detection without the need of RNA extraction, obtaining results in 90--120 minutes. We analyzed 116 self-collected saliva samples from passengers and airport staff arriving from abroad. All samples were negative by RT-qPCR, while 1 was positive, using ddPCR. Lastly, we developed ddPCR assays for SARS-CoV-2 variants identification (alpha, beta, gamma, delta/kappa) that are more economically advantageous when compared to NGS. Our findings demonstrated that saliva samples can be stored at ambient temperature, as we did not observe any significant difference between a fresh sample and the same sample after 24 hours (p = 0.23), hence, saliva collection is the optimal route for sampling airplane passengers. OBJECTIVES: COVID-19 can also cause multi-organ failure or severe pneumonia. Therefore, new biomarkers are being investigated for rapid diagnosis, early treatment and reduced mortality rates. In this study, D-dimer and albumin were looked at from a different perspective. BACKGROUND: We think that D-dimer/Albumin ratio (DAR), D-dimer and albumin may be parameters that can be used to predict in-hospital mortality and intensive care unit admission in COVID-19 patients. METHODS: The patients included in the study were divided into 2 groups according to their hospitalization status in the service and intensive care unit. These two groups were compared in terms of DAR, other laboratory data and in-hospital mortality. RESULTS: The primary findings we obtained are as follows: (1) DAR and D-dimer values are higher in patients who died in-hospital, and albumin values are lower than those who survived; (2) D-dimer and DAR median values are significantly higher in the intensive care group than in the service group. Albumin was significantly lower in the intensive care group; (3) D-dimer, albumin and DAR predicting in-hospital mortality, respectively: D-Dimer's sensitivity 56 % and specificity 57 %, albumin's sensitivity 70 % and specificity 53 %, DAR's sensitivity 56 %, specificity is 58 %; (4) The parameter with the highest predictive power for intensive care admission is albumin. CONCLUSION: Although albumin had the highest sensitivity values in determining mortality or predicting intensive care admission in our study, we think that D-dimer and DAR may be other parameters to be used to predict intensive care admission and in-hospital mortality. OBJECTIVES: Serum total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol may be associated with a poor prognosis in COVID-19 patients. METHODS: One hundred eighty-nine patients admitted to the emergency department between 20th January and 20th February 2021 and later decided to be hospitalized to an inpatient clinic or intensive care unit were included in the study. The patients were determined to be hospitalized to the inpatient clinic or intensive care unit according to the Turkish Ministry of Health COVID-19 guidelines. A demographic information form was established for each patient. RESULTS: The primary findings we have obtained were as follows: (1) CRP, PCT, D-Dimer levels were found to be high, while Albumin, TC, HDL-c, and LDL-c levels were found to be low in critical type patients; (2) CRP, PCT, and D-Dimer levels were higher in the patients who were intubated compared to those who were not intubated. Albumin and HDL levels were low; (3) DH was found to have a significantly negative relationship with TC and HDL-c, and (4) Sensitivity of LDL-c in predicting mortality was found as 69 % and specificity as 70%. It was observed that patients with low LDL-c levels had higher mortality rates. CONCLUSION: We think that hypocholesterolaemia may be an indicator of the impending danger. INTRODUCTION: This study was aimed to estimate the effect of one-year persistence of COVID-19 antipandemic measures on the posture and spine in children of younger school age in Slovakia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 135 children aged between 6 and 9 years participated in this study. The examination of posture and spine was carried out in 4 schools in 4 different districts in Slovakia. The posture was evaluated in February 2020, before anti-pandemic restrictions and in period from May 2021, after one year of anti-pandemic restrictions. Modified methodology according to Napoleon Wolanski was used to evaluate the posture. RESULTS: For the entire study group, the mean posture disorder level score before anti-pandemic restrictions was 5.667 (±1.75) and it rose to 7.844 (±0.64). Prevalence of posture disorders rose from 71.11 % to 91.3 % in the study group. The most affected segments were lumbar spine and pelvis, followed by deformities of the thoracis spinae. The mean pathology level score for entire group in these segments rose as followed: in the lumbar spine from 0.6 (±0.61) to 1.022 (±0.75); in the pelvis from 0.444 (±0.54) to 0.772 (±0.73) and in the thoracis spine from 0.378 (±0.53) to 0.578 (±0.61). CONCLUSION: Study confirmed a worsening of the posture and spine in school children after a one year of strict anti-pandemic measures. As postural changes increased by 20 % during the year, it seems necessary to implement appropriate preventives programs for children, which could have the potential to improve their postural state. BACKGROUND: SARS-CoV-2 is the cause of a pandemic with high mortality. In the present study, the effects of the lipase/lymphocyte ratio on mortality were investigated in cases diagnosed with Covid-19 and acute pancreatitis. METHODS: A total of 21 patients who were diagnosed with Covid-19 and acute pancreatitis, 34 patients who were not diagnosed with COVID-19 but diagnosed with acute pancreatitis, and 55 healthy control groups were divided into 3 groups and included in the study retrospectively. The patients who had positive RT-PCR (real-time polymerized chain reaction) test results were included in the study. Complete blood count and biochemical values of the patients were compared with those of the control group. RESULTS: When the data of the cases diagnosed with COVID-19 and acute pancreatitis were examined retrospectively, the amylase, lipase, lipase/lymphocyte ratio, and D-dimer levels were found to be significantly higher than in the control group (p < 0.01). In the ROC analysis, the amylase, lipase, and lipase/lymphocyte ratio had a high AUC (area under the curve) value (0.993 / 0.949 / 0.978, respectively). BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: SARS-CoV-2 as the newest member of Beta-Coronaviruses can cause a complicated disease called COVID-19. This virus is able to penetrate a broad range of human cells, such as liver, heart, and kidney cells via ACE2-associated endocytosis. Heart involvement can result in kidney injuries; it is now testified that kidney congestion occurs following the cardio-renal syndrome. Acute Kidney Injury is one of the most critical damages to the kidney in a wide range of COVID-19-caused kidney injuries (which includes proteinuria, hematuria, etc.). Examination of AKI risk factors in COVID-19 patients can assist physicians to prevent its incidence. The final aim of this systematic review was to collate the condition and risk factors of AKI and non-AKI COVID-19 patients and to investigate AKI incidence in high-risk patients. METHOD: A complete and comprehensive survey was performed by reviewing original articles and case reports indexed in various databases such as PubMed/Medline, Embase, and WoS to find appropriate articles. The eligible articles then were selected by two authors and entered into the evaluation process. This systematic review conforms PRISMA statement. RESULTS: After searching for potentially relevant articles, 14 out of the initial 463 articles from 6 countries were selected and evaluated. All of eligible articles have investigated the rate of AKI incidence and its physiopathological consequences in COVID-19 patients in all conditions (not only patients in critical condition). First, the initial differences between AKI and non-AKI patients were compared. As an instance, our study revealed that mean of White Blood cells (WBC) was much higher in AKI patients which can be responsible for the severe conditions. Then, other variations like differences in laboratory and imaging findings were compared between these two groups. Our outcomes demonstrated that the presence of diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension (HTN), and male sex can be three significant risk factors in AKI incidence in COVID-19 patients. Fatality rate and treatment methods were also compared among these two groups. CONCLUSION: As one of kidney damages, AKI can worsen COVID-19 patients' status by causing conditions such as acidosis. Our study shows the common symptoms in AKI COVID-19 patients were fever, cough, and malaise. BACKGROUND: The health of seniors is usually characterized by polymorbidity. With regard to quoad vitam prognosis, COVID-19 is extremely risky for seniors. The data on polymorbidity in seniors with COVID-19 are scarce. OBJECTIVE: To investigate comorbidity in seniors diagnosed with COVID-19 and requiring hospitalization. METHODS: In a retrospective observational study, we analyzed patients aged 65 years or older and hospitalized primarily for COVID-19 from November 1, 2020, to April 30, 2021 (n=155; mean age 82 years). We monitored the presence of 48 diseases accompanying COVID-19. RESULTS: The mean (minimal - maximal) number of acute, chronic and all comorbidities were 1.8 (0-5), 11.3 (2-20) and 13.1 (4-22), respectively. Excessive comorbidity (>10 diseases) was present in 72.3 %. Comorbid arterial hypertension was diagnosed in 86 %, chronic kidney disease in 86 %, hepatopathy in 82 %, coronary artery disease in 79 %, dehydration in 46 %, and urinary infections in 30 %. Twenty-six chronic comorbidities had a prevalence of >10 %. Residents of social care facilities (SCF) had signifi cantly higher polymorbidity than home-living seniors (on average by 3.5 more diseases, their OR for excessive polymorbidity was 11.8). The prevalence of overall, chronic and excess polymorbidity increased up to the age of 84 years. Nine out of ten seniors aged 80 years or older had 11 or more comorbidities. CONCLUSION: The burden of accompanying diseases in seniors with severe COVID-19 is very high. Seniors living in SCF are particularly at risk (Tab. 5, Fig. 8, Ref. 58). BACKGROUND: Since the date of declaring the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic by the World Health Organization (March 11, 2020), vaccine studies have been initiated. In this article, we aimed to investigate highly cited articles on vaccines and guide researchers for future studies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Publications with 6 or more citations (highly cited publications) were extracted from Web of Science (WoS) database. These publications were investigated according to the number of citations, language, publication year, WoS categories, publication types, organizations involved, authors, countries and research areas. Additionally, top 20 articles were investigated in detail. RESULTS: A total of 126 publications were determined. When WoS categories were investigated, 18 pertained to immunology (14.2 %), 17 to biochemistry (13.4 %) and 17 to multidisciplinary sciences (13.4 %). There were three types of publications, namely 80 original articles (63.4 %), 46 reviews (36.5 %) and 11 early access publications (8.7 %). Top universities were Harvard University (n=9, 7.1 %), Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (n=7, 5.5 %) and University of California system (n=7, 5.5 %). Top authors were Qin CF with 4 articles (3.1 %), Wang L with 4 articles (3.1 %) and Baric RS with 3 articles (2.3 %). Top journals with the highest number of publications were Journal of Biomolecular Structure Dynamics (n=8, 6.3 %), Nature (n=8, 6.3 %) and Science (n=6, 4.7 %). Top countries were the United States of America (USA) with 45 articles (35.7 %), People's Republic of China with 44 articles (34.9 %), and India with 15 articles (11.9 %). Research areas of the publications were science technology other topics (n=21, 16.6 %), immunology (n=18, 14.2 %) and pharmacology (n=18, 14.2 %). CONCLUSION: Vaccine studies play a pivotal role in the warfare against COVID-19. Our results revealed that under the leadership of the USA, China and India, the number of scientists focusing on vaccines is increasing and gratifying results are obtained from vaccine studies (Tab. 3, Ref. 40). OBJECTIVES: We decided to compare the incidence and spectrum of pelvic fractures in 2020 affected by the anti-pandemic measures due to COVID-19 with previous years 2018 and 2019. METHODS: This retrospective study included 391 patients treated at the author's clinic for pelvic fractures. From the medical records we recorded gender, age, mechanism of injury, trauma energy, fracture type based on the AO classification and severity of injury. RESULTS: As expected, we observed no difference in the number of fractures caused by simple falls. However, we failed to prove a reduction in the number of high-energy injuries. In contrary, we observed an increase in the number of high-energy injuries in the period between lockdowns (p=0.0375). A surprising result was a dramatic increase in suicide attempts as a cause of pelvic fractures, with 6 (2.2 %) in 2018 and 2019 compared to 13 (10 %) in 2020 alone (p=0.0017). CONCLUSION: We observed the increased number of suicidal attempts only on a limited number of specific patients with pelvic fractures; therefore, we cannot formulate any general conclusions regarding the incidence of suicide during the COVID-19 pandemic. BACKGROUND: We report our experience in starting RATS (robotic-assisted thoracic surgery) lobectomy program during COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Data from 20 consecutive cases undergoing RATS lobectomy between August 2020 and April 2021 were prospectively accumulated into our database. RESULTS: The mean operational time was 235±69 minutes (median 210, range 175 to 370). Conversionto-open rate was 5 %. One patient was converted to an open procedure during surgery due to surgical bleeding. One patient (5 %), with sever chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), had prolonged air leak with chest drainage 11 days and conservative treatment. Morbidity rate was 10 % (2 patients). Estimated costs of RATS lobectomy in our department were $9,590 (range $8,250-$12,730). 30-days mortality was 0%. CONCLUSIONS: Safe robotic surgery is based not only on improved robotic equipment, but also on good technical skills and medical knowledge. It requires training of the entire operating room team. Since the outbreak of COVID-19 as a pandemic disease earlier in 2020, several publications reported the electron microscope images of SARS-CoV-2. This article reviews 73 articles from March 1956 till April 2021, focusing on the ultrastructure characteristics of the coronaviruses. We present the scientific debate and provide an opinion on the current controversy of electron microscopic images interpreted as SARS-CoV-2 particles in specimens from patients with COVID-19. Finally, we report our findings in a post-mortem lung specimen of a COVID-19 patient. With this we hope to facilitate accurate interpretation of TEM findings, and contribute to the building of a unified database in the face of COVID-19 (Tab. 2, Fig. 8, Ref. 81). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
