El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the leading mode of interannual ocean–atmosphere coupling in the tropical Pacific, greatly influencing the global climate system. Seasonal phase locking, which means that ENSO events usually peak in boreal winter, is a distinctive feature of ENSO. In model future projections, the ENSO sea surface temperature (SST) amplitude in winter shows no significant change with a large intermodel spread. However, whether and how ENSO phase locking will respond to global warming are not fully understood. In this study, using Community Earth System Model Large Ensemble (CESM-LE) projections, we found that the seasonality of ENSO events, especially its peak phase, has advanced under global warming. This phenomenon corresponds to the seasonal difference in the changes in the ENSO SST amplitude with an enhanced (weakened) amplitude from boreal summer to autumn (winter). Mixed layer ocean heat budget analysis revealed that the advanced ENSO seasonality is due to intensified positive meridional advective and thermocline feedback during the ENSO developing phase and intensified negative thermal damping during the ENSO peak phase. Furthermore, the seasonal variation in the mean El Niño–like SST warming in the tropical Pacific favors a weakened zonal advective feedback in boreal autumn–winter and earlier decay of ENSO. The advance of the ENSO peak phase is also found in most CMIP5/6 models that simulate the seasonal phase locking of ENSO well in the present climate. Indian Ocean (IO) stratification has important effects on the air–sea interaction, ocean dynamics, and ecology. It is, therefore, of significance to investigate the changes in IO stratification. In this study, we use ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) to extract the nonlinear long-term trend in the upper IO stratification quantified by potential energy anomalies. The results show that the strengthening of the stratification is spatially and temporally nonuniform. Specifically, the trend of stratification intensified gradually before 1996, but accelerated rapidly after 1996. Temperature and salinity changes play a crucial role in the fast enhancement of stratification and its regional differences. Temperature variations dominate the stratification trend in ∼90% of the IO area, while the contributions of salinity changes are mainly in the southeast Indian Ocean (SEIO). Vertically, the rapid enhancement of stratification is caused by the trend of temperature and salt in the upper 400 m. We further perform temperature budget analysis and find that the warming trend in the upper 400 m south of the IO is mainly modulated by vertical advection and meridional advection, while the warming in the north of the IO is mainly induced by air–sea heat fluxes. The trends over recent decades in tropical Pacific sea surface and upper ocean temperature are examined in observations-based products, an ocean reanalysis and the latest models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase six and the Multimodel Large Ensembles Archive. Comparison is made using three metrics of sea surface temperature (SST) trend—the east–west and north–south SST gradients and a pattern correlation for the equatorial region—as well as change in thermocline depth. It is shown that the latest generation of models persist in not reproducing the observations-based SST trends as a response to radiative forcing and that the latter are at the far edge or beyond the range of modeled internal variability. The observed combination of thermocline shoaling and lack of warming in the equatorial cold tongue upwelling region is similarly at the extreme limit of modeled behavior. The persistence over the last century and a half of the observed trend toward an enhanced east–west SST gradient and, in four of five observed gridded datasets, to an enhanced equatorial north–south SST gradient, is also at the limit of model behavior. It is concluded that it is extremely unlikely that the observed trends are consistent with modeled internal variability. Instead, the results support the argument that the observed trends are a response to radiative forcing in which an enhanced east–west SST gradient and thermocline shoaling are key and that the latest generation of climate models continue to be unable to simulate this aspect of climate change. This study aims to examine the variation of the characteristics of summer rainstorms and water vapor budget in the Sichuan Basin by using daily precipitation observation data and monthly mean ERA-Interim reanalysis data during 1979–2016. The results show that the spatial and temporal distribution of rainstorms in the Sichuan Basin is the result of the interaction between the special topography of the Sichuan Basin and different water vapor transports at low latitudes. The precipitation amount and frequency of rainstorms are mainly affected by the water vapor transports and budgets in different regions, and the intensity of rainstorms is mainly affected by the dynamic effects of regional and local topography, especially in the western and northern basin. The main reasons for the change of summer rainstorms in the Sichuan Basin include the atmospheric circulation over the key area of air–sea interaction in the tropical region, the anomalies of regional circulation, and water vapor transports in eastern China and the Sichuan Basin. A conceptual model for the summer rainstorm anomaly in the Sichuan Basin is proposed. With the establishment of consistent easterly airflow in the low-latitude tropical area (130°E–180°, 0°–10°N) and the anticyclone on its north, an anomalous southeasterly airflow and water vapor divergence maintain over eastern and southern China while an anomalous southeasterly airflow and water vapor convergence appear over the Sichuan Basin. So, more summer rainstorms occur in this region. Conversely, with the establishment of consistent westerly airflow in that same tropical area and the cyclone on its north, an anomalous easterly airflow and water vapor convergence maintain over eastern and southern China while an anomalous northeasterly airflow and water vapor divergence appear over the Sichuan Basin. So, fewer summer rainstorms occur in this region. Significance Statement: Rainstorm change in the Sichuan Basin has significant regional characteristics. This study aims to reveal the influence of regional variation of water vapor budget on summer rainstorms in the Sichuan Basin, which provides the important basis for the forecast of rainstorm in the Sichuan Basin, as well as new comprehension for the research and application of regional response to climate change. The amount and frequency of rainstorms are mainly affected by water vapor transports and budgets in different regions, and the intensity of rainstorms is mainly affected by the dynamic action of different regional and local topography. This study investigates the formation mechanism of the ocean surface warming pattern in response to a doubling CO2 with a focus on the role of ocean heat uptake (or ocean surface heat flux change, ΔQnet). We demonstrate that the transient patterns of surface warming and rainfall change simulated by the dynamic ocean–atmosphere coupled model (DOM) can be reproduced by the equilibrium solutions of the slab ocean–atmosphere coupled model (SOM) simulations when forced with the DOM ΔQnet distribution. The SOM is then used as a diagnostic inverse modeling tool to decompose the CO2-induced thermodynamic warming effect and the ΔQnet (ocean heat uptake)–induced cooling effect. As ΔQnet is largely positive (i.e., downward into the ocean) in the subpolar oceans and weakly negative at the equator, its cooling effect is strongly polar amplified and opposes the CO2 warming, reducing the net warming response especially over Antarctica. For the same reason, the ΔQnet-induced cooling effect contributes significantly to the equatorially enhanced warming in all three ocean basins, while the CO2 warming effect plays a role in the equatorial warming of the eastern Pacific. The spatially varying component of ΔQnet, although globally averaged to zero, can effectively rectify and lead to decreased global mean surface temperature of a comparable magnitude as the global mean ΔQnet effect under transient climate change. Spatial and temporal variations of nutrient-rich upwelled water across the major eastern boundary upwelling systems are primarily controlled by the surface wind with different, and sometimes contrasting, impacts on coastal upwelling systems driven by alongshore wind and offshore upwelling systems driven by the local wind stress curl. Here, concurrently measured wind fields and satellite-derived chlorophyll-a concentration, along with a state-of-the-art ocean model simulation, spanning 2008–18 are used to investigate the connection between coastal and offshore physical drivers of the Benguela upwelling system (BUS). Our results indicate that the spatial structure of long-term mean upwelling derived from Ekman theory and the numerical model is fairly consistent across the entire BUS and is closely followed by the chlorophyll-a pattern. The variability of the upwelling from the Ekman theory is proportionally diminished with offshore distance, whereas different and sometimes opposite structures are revealed in the model-derived upwelling. Our result suggests the presence of submesoscale activity (i.e., filaments and eddies) across the entire BUS with a large modulating effect on the wind-stress-curl-driven upwelling off Lüderitz and Walvis Bay. In Kunene and Cape Frio upwelling cells, located in the northern sector of the BUS, the coastal upwelling and open-ocean upwelling frequently alternate each other, whereas they are modulated by the annual cycle and are mostly in phase off Walvis Bay. Such a phase relationship appears to be strongly seasonally dependent off Lüderitz and across the southern BUS. Thus, our findings suggest that this relationship is far more complex than is currently thought and seems to be sensitive to climate changes, with short- and far-reaching consequences for this vulnerable marine ecosystem. As an important part of the Indo-Pacific warm pool, the Indian Ocean has great significance for research on the Asian monsoon system and global climate change. From the 1960s onward, several international and regional programs have led to important new insights into the Indian Ocean. The eastern Tropical Indian Ocean Observation Network (TIOON) was established in 2010. The TIOON consists of two parts: large-scope observations and moored measurements. Large-scope observations are performed by the eastern Tropical Indian Ocean Comprehensive Experiment Cruise (TIO-CEC). Moored measurements are executed by the TIOON mooring array and the hydrological meteorological buoy. By 2019, 10 successful TIO-CEC voyages had been accomplished, making this mission the most comprehensive scientific investigation in China. The TIO-CEC voyages have collected temperature/salinity profiles, GPS radiosonde profiles, and other observations in the Indian Ocean. To supplement the existing buoy array in the Indian Ocean, an enhanced TIOON mooring array consisting of eight subthermocline acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) moorings, was established since 2013. The TIOON mooring equipped with both upward-looking and downward-looking WHLS75K ADCP provide valuable current monitoring information to depth of 1,000 m in the Indian Ocean. To improve air–sea interaction monitoring, two real-time hydrological–meteorological buoys were deployed in 2019 and 2020 in the equatorial Indian Ocean. A better understanding of the Indian Ocean requires continuous and long-term observations. The TIOON program and other aspiring field investigation programs will be promoted in the future.
