The spatial distribution of summer rainfall anomalies over eastern China often shows a tripole pattern with rainfall anomalies over the Yangtze River basin varies in opposite phase with North China and South China. It is not clear whether this tripole pattern is an intrinsic atmospheric mode or it is remotely forced. Using two sets of model outputs from 20 models participating in phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5), this paper investigates the driving mechanisms of this leading rainfall mode and its major influencing factors. One set (piControl) is fully coupled atmosphere–ocean simulations under constant preindustrial forcing and the other (sstClim) is atmosphere-alone models forced by prescribed climatological sea surface temperatures (SSTs). By comparing results from these two different sets of simulations, it is found that the tripole pattern is the leading mode of summer precipitation variability over eastern China with or without oceanic forcing. It can be regarded as an intrinsic atmospheric mode although air–sea interaction can modify its temporal variability. The cyclonic–anticyclonic atmospheric circulation anomaly over the northern North Pacific is identified as a key factor in both experiments. As atmospheric internal variability, it is related to a circumglobal zonal wave train propagating along the westerly jet stream. When air–sea interactions involved, modulation from SST anomalies is exerted through the meridional Pacific–Japan/East Asia–Pacific wave train propagating along the East Asian coast. The southwest vortex (SWV) is a critical weather system in China, but our knowledge of this system remains incomplete. Here, we investigate the cloud properties in the SWV. First, we search for the SWVs with time steps and center locations that are consistent between the SWV yearbook and ERA-Interim reanalysis data. Second, we supplement these SWVs' life spans and movement paths. Third, we relocate the Fengyun (FY) satellite FY-4A cloud retrievals in the 10° × 10° region centered on each SWV and analyze the cloud occurrence frequency (COF), cloud-top height (CTH), and cloud optical thickness (COT). A distribution mode of cloud types is summarized from the COFs, with water clouds, supercooled clouds, mixed clouds, ice clouds, cirrus clouds, and overlap clouds occurring sequentially from west to east. The CTH probability density (PD) distribution features a significant north–south difference. In addition, the COT PD distributions exhibit a common trend: with increasing COT, the PD increases rapidly and then slowly before peaking, whereupon the PD decreases abruptly. From spring to summer, the region with the highest convective COF shifts from the northeast to the northwest, and an east–west gradient of the convective COF appears in autumn and winter. Furthermore, we investigate the cloud properties during SWV-related heavy rainfall. Heavy rain occurs mainly in the west of the SWV, and convective clouds are mainly in the northwest, partly in the southwest and near the SWV center. The average CTH in heavy rainfall is generally higher than 6 km, and the average COT is greater than 20. Significance Statement: The southwest vortex (SWV) is an important weather system in China. However, we do not yet comprehensively know this weather system. The cloud properties can indicate the structures of weather systems and are key parameters in numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. Thus, investigating cloud properties is necessary and meaningful to understand the SWV and accurately predict SWV-related precipitation in NWP models. In this paper, a typical distribution mode of six cloud types in the SWV is summarized from the cloud occurrence frequency, and the distribution features of convective clouds, cloud-top height, and cloud optical thickness in the SWV are analyzed. In this study, downscaling, ensemble data assimilation, time lagging, and their combination were used to generate initial condition (IC) perturbations for 12-h convection-permitting ensemble forecasting for heavy-rainfall events over South China during the rainy season in 2013–20. These events were classified as weak- and strong-forcing cases based on synoptic-scale forcing during the presummer rainy season and as landfalling tropical cyclone (TC) cases. This study investigated the impacts of various IC perturbation methods on multiscale characteristics of perturbations and the forecast performance for both nonprecipitation and precipitation variables. These perturbation methods represented different source IC uncertainties and thus differed in multiscale characteristics of perturbations in vertical structures, horizontal distributions, and time evolution. The combination of various IC perturbation methods evidently increased perturbations or spreads of precipitation in both magnitude and location and thus improved the forecast-error estimation. Such an improvement was most and least evident for TC cases during the early and late forecasts, respectively, and was more evident for strong- than weak-forcing cases beyond 6 h. The combination of various IC perturbation methods generally improved both the ensemble-mean and probabilistic forecasts with case-dependent improvements. For heavy rainfall forecasting, 1–6-h improvements were most prominent for TC cases in terms of discrimination and accuracy, while 7–12-h improvements were least prominent for weak-forcing cases in terms of reliability and accuracy. In particular, the improvements in predicting weak-forcing cases increased with spatial errors. In contrast, for strong-forcing cases, the improvements were least and most prominent before and beyond 6 h, respectively. Significance Statement: Precipitation forecasting for heavy-rainfall events over South China in the rainy season is still challenging due to large uncertainties. Convection-permitting ensemble forecasting is expected to address such uncertainties to improve forecasts of heavy rainfall. However, it is not yet clear how to optimally design convection-permitting ensembles by implementing perturbations in initial conditions (ICs). This study investigates the impacts of various IC perturbation methods on convection-permitting ensemble forecasting over South China in the rainy season. Various IC perturbation methods show discrepant multiscale characteristics of perturbations, which generally complement each other when these perturbations are combined. The added values of combining various IC perturbation methods in forecasting are confirmed for most variables. However, such values are case dependent, with the largest values for tropical cyclone cases during the early forecasts and for the presummer rainy season cases with strong synoptic-scale forcing during late forecasts. An atmospheric river (AR) is a highly accumulated line of moisture, which often preconditions heavy rainfall events. Considering the short-lived nature of ARs, we aim to understand their characteristics over the western North Pacific (WNP) in boreal summer, focusing on the difference between the post–El Niño (pEN) and non-post–El Niño (npEN) cases in weekly segments rather than the seasonal mean. We found that during AR-active weeks in pEN summers, a meridional dipole pattern of anomalous geopotential height with a more westward-extended WNP subtropical high dominates, favoring AR activity over southern China to the central Pacific. In npEN summers, in contrast, a zonal dipole pattern with an anomalous low over southeast China and an anomalous high over subtropical WNP is pronounced during the AR-active weeks, which is accompanied with warm sea surface temperature anomalies and greater downward shortwave radiation to the southeast of Japan. Such anomalous circulation leads to enhanced AR occurrence over the northern South China Sea (SCS) to Japan. The above differences in the AR features between the two cases appear as the distinct regionality in the AR-related rainfall over eastern China and Japan. Temporal decompositions reveal that both seasonal mean and submonthly variations play dominant roles in the anomalous circulation during AR-active weeks in pEN summers, while the submonthly variations are more pronounced in npEN summers. Further analysis also suggests that tropical cyclones could impact AR occurrence in both cases with different patterns of atmospheric responses, inducing remarkable AR enhancement over the northern SCS in npEN summers. This study examines the characteristics and phase evolution of the quasi-biweekly oscillation of surface sensible heating (SH) over the central-eastern Tibetan Plateau (CETP) during spring. The mechanism connecting CETP SH to spring rainfall in China on the quasi-biweekly time scale is further investigated. Results show that the dominant mode of quasi-biweekly CETP SH presents a monopole pattern, in which the peak leads the maximum of the quasi-biweekly rainfall in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River (MLYR) and South China by approximately 5 and 7 days, respectively. As an upper-level Rossby wave train propagates eastward, an anomalous center of convergence moves to the CETP, which leads to a strong downdraft and reduced cloud cover. The resultant elevated shortwave radiation input and drier soil conditions are favorable for the CETP SH quasi-biweekly oscillation to enter a positive phase. When reaching its peak, the CETP SH efficiently heats the lower atmosphere, resulting in a local updraft. Due to the "SH-driven air pump" effect, abundant water vapor is transported from the oceans to China. A lower-layer southerly anomaly on the east side of the TP develops into an anomalous cyclonic circulation via the effect of topographic friction, which leads to the expansion of the positive potential vorticity anomaly and the maximum of the quasi-biweekly rainfall in the MLYR. Further southeastward propagation of the wave train leads to a shift in the rainfall anomaly center to South China. Multiple parallel rainbands (MPRBs) involve the organization of mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) characterized by multiple parallel convective rainbands, which may produce high rainfall accumulation. A total of 178 MPRBs were identified from 2016 to 2020 in China, which were classified into the initiation type (∼40%), where rainbands initiate individually, and differentiation type (∼60%), where rainbands form through the splitting of large rainbands or merging of smaller cells. Results showed that the occurrence frequency of MPRBs peaks in July with a midnight major peak and a morning minor peak. The highest occurrence frequency is observed in the northern Beibu Gulf and its coastal areas, with minor high frequencies in Guangdong, northern Jiangxi, and southern Shandong provinces, typically in a southwesterly low-level jet to the west of the subtropical high. MPRBs mainly contain 3–4 rainbands with a spacing distance of 30–50 km and an orientation generally consistent with the direction of 850-hPa winds and 0–1-km vertical wind shear. MPRBs generally move slower than that of squall lines in East China ranging from 4 to 8 m s−1 with 16% being quasi-stationary, which is mainly due to the occurrence of band back building mainly associated with cold pool. Most MPRBs have training effects with band training as the dominant mode. Because of the band training effect and slower movement of MPRBs mainly due to band back building, 71% of MPRBs are associated with enhanced maximum hourly rainfall. Rainfall severity may be alleviated somewhat by the generally short duration of MPRBs with 78% being shorter than 2 h. Significance Statement: The purpose of this study is to document the general features of mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) with a specific organization of multiple parallel rainbands (MPRBs). MCSs with this unique organization tend to produce extremely heavy rainfall partly due to the training of multiple rainbands as well as their slow movement because of back building. The organization pattern of MPRBs was previously found in a case study. The possible formation mechanism was also previously examined based on case studies. As a complement to these studies, this work aims to reveal the temporal and spatial distributions, movement and duration, morphology, precipitation patterns, and environmental features of MPRBs in China based on statistics using 5-yr radar reflectivity data. In the summer of 2022, a long-lasting La Niña entered its third year. In Asia, southern China was in the grip of a historic drought while heavy rainfall ravaged Pakistan. Using a climate model forced by observed sea surface temperatures (SST) over the equatorial Pacific, we show that the back-to-back La Niña events from 2020 to 2022 are a key contributor to the global SST pattern in 2022, including the negative-phase Pacific decadal oscillation and exceptionally strong negative Indian Ocean dipole. The model reproduces the observed precipitation pattern over South and East Asia, including enhanced rainfall over Pakistan-northwest India and reduced rainfall over southern China. Additional model simulations indicate that the negative Indian Ocean dipole combined with La Niña reduces southern China rainfall by causing anomalous subsidence and anticyclonic flows. Anthropogenic land-use change, irrigation, is considered to strongly modulate the hydroclimate at the regional scale by directly triggering evaporative cooling as the preliminary local effect. However, subsequent interactions with the background climate are highly nonlinear, which introduces diverse and unexpected consequences. The North China Plain (NCP) is one of the regions where irrigation has expanded the most rapidly since the twentieth century. The scarce rainfall in this region makes it necessary for irrigation to supplement the level of soil water for agricultural production. In this study, we quantify the effect of irrigation on the regional climate in China. Two regional climate models, WRF and RegCM, are used to mimic the large-scale practice of irrigation on the NCP. The results of our experiments show consistent cooling and moistening effects centered over the NCP across all experiments. Although the moisture budget and wind field pattern demonstrate that the vertical downdraft and low-level divergence could inhibit rainfall, the humidification dominates the climatic response in the dry April–June and increases the amount of precipitation significantly and consistently in the NCP region and the surrounding area in northern China. The enhanced CAPE increases sharply on some "calm days" when the vertical moisture advection is small, especially during the afternoon, triggering frequent light rains convectively by destabilizing the atmosphere. The consistent response to irrigation in two different models that employ structurally different land surface schemes could enhance the robustness of the physical mechanism behind the precipitation increase in the heavily irrigated region of NCP. This study demonstrates the synoptic-scale relationship between the atmospheric heat source over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) (TP) and summer rainfall in eastern China. The results show that the summer TP has three key areas [eastern, western, and northeastern TP (TPE, TPW, TPNE, respectively)] and 3–8-day dominant oscillation periods on the synoptic time scale for each subregion. Analogously, on the synoptic scale, the downstream rainfall of the TP in China has six sensitive regions (zone I to zone VI), each with 3–8-day dominant periods. The TPE, TPW, and TPNE lead rainfall by 4 days with a southeastward propagation pathway, by 5 days with both southeastward and northeastward propagation routes, and by 4 days with an eastward route, respectively. Mechanistically, when TP lies in the positive-to-negative transition phase, the rainfall moves off the TP and reaches the maximum in its most inactive phase; the jet cores embedded in the subtropical westerly jet band and the trough from the region of the TP lead the eastward movement of the rainfall by the propagation of the divergence center and generalized moist potential vorticity. Besides, the southwest vortex and northwest vortex generated at the southeastern and northeastern flank of the TP are the main cause for the southeastward and northeastward or eastward movement of the precipitation. Further internal atmospheric dynamic structures indicate that both the horizontal moisture advection and generalized moist potential vorticity advection act on the entire propagation processes of the synoptic-scale signals for each TP key area. The long-term characteristics of four hydrometeor species (cloud water, cloud ice, rain, and snow) in precipitating clouds over eastern China (divided into South China, Jianghuai, and North China) and their relationships with surface rainfall are first investigated using the fifth major global reanalysis produced by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ERA5) hourly dataset from May to August during 1979–2020. The results show that the cloud water path decreases significantly from south to north as a result of the large-scale circulation and water vapor distribution, with the maximum value of 180 g m−2 in South China and only one-half of that value in North China. The slope in linear relationship between rainwater path and precipitation intensity is at the maximum (5.68 h−1) in South China, implying the highest conversion rate from rainwater to precipitation in this region. When the precipitation rate exceeds 15 mm h−1, the ice-phase hydrometeor contents in South China become the largest among the three regions, indicating that the cold-rain process is crucial to heavy rainfall. The moisture-related processes play a dominant role in the precipitation intensity. Although the contribution of hydrometeor advection to precipitation is generally between −5% and 5%, we found that it can jointly modulate the location of heavy rainfall. In addition, the peaks of cloud water path commonly appear 2–3 h ahead of precipitation, whereas the peaks of ice-phase particles occur 2 and 1 h behind the afternoon precipitation onset in South China and Jianghuai, respectively, which is mainly attributed to the different upward velocity and water vapor convergence in the mid–upper troposphere. Significance Statement: Reanalysis data and satellite retrievals have been widely used in investigating cloud water and cloud ice in nonprecipitating clouds. However, studies on long-term characteristics of precipitating hydrometeors in precipitating clouds, which are directly connected and crucial to surface rainfall, are still very limited to date because of limitations in observations of precipitating clouds. In this study, the latest ERA5 reanalysis hourly dataset is first used to quantitatively explore the climatological characteristics of four hydrometeors (cloud water, cloud ice, rain, and snow) in precipitating clouds as well as their relationships with precipitation intensity over eastern China from 1979 to 2020. In this study, persistent rainfall (PR) over South China (SC) is divided into two types. One type occurs multiple times in succession [defined as multiple PR (MPR)]; another type represents isolated PR (IPR), for which no new PR occurs for 10 days after the previous PR. The spatiotemporal structures of the 10-30-day intraseasonal oscillations (ISOs) associated with the two types of PR are compared and analyzed. The results reveal that the low-level moisture and air temperature perturbations always have a leading phase relative to the anomalous precipitation. In addition, the positive low-level moisture tendency appears in the MPR ending phase, whereas that in the IPR is close to zero. This difference results in convective development after the MPR ending phase, though not after the IPR. The moisture budget shows that the difference in moisture tendency between MPR and IPR is mainly due to meridional advection, including advections by the mean meridional flow across the perturbation moisture gradient and by the perturbation meridional flow across the mean moisture gradient. For the former, the difference is attributed to the perturbation moisture gradients, while the mean moisture gradients are responsible for the difference of the latter. Furthermore, an essential cause of the difference is the influence of higher-latitude disturbances that affect the IPR more significantly than the MPR. Two associated mechanisms are proposed. One is the perturbation stacking effect, and the other is the effect of angular momentum conservation. The extended-range forecast with a lead time of 10-30 days is the gap between weather (,10 days) and climate (.30 days) predictions. Improving the forecast skill of extreme weather events at the extended range is crucial for risk management of disastrous events. In this study, three deep learning (DL) models based on the methods of convolutional neural networks and gate recurrent units are constructed to predict the rainfall anomalies and associated extreme events in East China at lead times of 1-6 pentads. All DL models show skillful prediction of the temporal variation of rainfall anomalies (in terms of temporal correlation coefficient skill) over most regions in East China beyond 4 pentads, outperforming the dynamical models from the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The spatial distribution of the rainfall anomalies is also better predicted by the DL models than the dynamical models; and the DL models show higher pattern correlation coefficients than the dynamical models at lead times of 3-6 pentads. The higher skill of DL models in predicting the rainfall anomalies will help to improve the accuracy of extreme-event predictions. The Heidke skill scores of the extreme rainfall event forecast performed by the DL models are also superior to those of the dynamical models at a lead time beyond about 4 pentads. Heat map analysis for the DL models shows that the predictability sources are mainly the large-scale factors modulating the East Asian monsoon rainfall. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Improving the forecast skill for extreme weather events at the extended range (10-30 days in advance), particularly over populated regions such as East China, is crucial for risk management. This study aims to develop skillful models of the rainfall anomalies and associated extreme heavy rainfall events using deep learning techniques. The models constructed here benefit from the capability of deep learning to identify the predictability sources of rainfall variability, and outperform the current operational models, including the ECMWF and the CMA models, at forecast lead times beyond 3-4 pentads. Supertyphoon rainstorms are apposite examples to evaluate the utility of multisource precipitation products in monitoring and forecasting short-duration heavy rainfall and the resulting intense floods. In this study, the record-breaking floods induced by Typhoon Lekima in Jiao River, China, were retrospectively forecasted. The Xinanjiang (XAJ) model was calibrated based on parameter regionalization derived from SOM+k-means clustering. Via XAJ, the performance of the currently prevailing atmosphere reanalysis (CLDASv2 and CMA-CMORP), quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) (IMERG-ER and PERSIANN-CCS), and quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPFs) (GRAPES_MESO, ECMWF, and GFS) in monitoring and forecasting Lekima rainfall and flood was comprehensively evaluated. A three-component blended ensemble was proposed, by blending QPE nowcasts with the weighted ensemble of QPFs through a transition of the regional GRAPES_MESO, and compared with two conventional two-component blending methods. The results indicated that the parameter regionalization enabled an explicit consideration of the spatial heterogeneity of basin attributes as well as meteorology, resulting in a minimum NSE of 0.81. CLDASv2 and CMA-CMORPH provided superior spatiotemporal accuracy with a structural similarity index up to 0.75 and NSE > 0.9 for the flood simulation. PERSIANN-CCS rainfall and the driven flood were seriously underestimated by 70% and 80%, respectively. The real-time application of QPFs during the Lekima flood provided encouraging results with a lead time of 40 h. The three-component blended ensemble method resulted in more stable and accurate flood forecasts, especially for the flood peak on 9 August, which was improved by 80%. This study investigates the impact of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the seasonal evolution of the Asian–Pacific summer monsoon. The results show that during the summers when the SSTs in the equatorial eastern Pacific are above normal (i.e., during developing El Niño), the seasonal march of the Asian–Pacific summer monsoon is delayed. Specifically, the stepwise northeastward extension of the western North Pacific monsoon and the northward migration of East Asian and Indian monsoon are all delayed, resulting in rainfall deficiency in the western North Pacific and India, and more rainfall in the Yangtze River valley but less rainfall in North China due to the delayed northward migration and resultant prolonged rainy season in the Yangtze River valley. In addition, the seasonal march of the Asian upper-tropospheric westerly jet, which is mainly characterized by the northward migration during the monsoon development, is also delayed, concurrent with the delayed march of monsoonal rainfall. During La Niña summers, however, the seasonal march of the monsoon and Asian jet does not exhibit clear variations, suggesting asymmetrical impacts between El Niño and La Niña. Furthermore, we explain these variations in the seasonal evolution of rainfall and jet and the asymmetrical impacts between El Niño and La Niña through the variations in tropical tropospheric temperatures and the resultant changes in meridional temperature gradient. Significance Statement: The seasonal march of the Asian–Pacific summer monsoon exhibits large spatial and temporal variations, but shows some regular features such as stepwise northward migrations. The impacts of ENSO on the seasonal evolution of the components of Asian–Pacific summer monsoon have been shown in previous studies. However, there have been remarkable uncertainties in the previous results, and more emphasis has been put on the impacts of preceding ENSO. This study starts from El Niño and La Niña summers to reduce uncertainty caused by defining the seasonal march of the monsoon, and includes the variations in circulations that correspond well to monsoonal rainfall, making the conclusions more reliable. Air quality over the North China Plain (NCP) and rainfall over southern China exhibit robust and correlated interannual variations during winter from 1979 to 2018. A correlation coefficient of 0.7 between the PM2.5 concentration over the NCP and rainfall in southern China indicates that poor air quality and rainfall are linked (referred to as the south rainfall–north pollution pattern), which is likely due to the strong eastern Pacific (EP) El Niño. In the mature phase of the strong EP El Niño, the Northeast Asian anomalous anticyclone (NAAA) is strengthened by two Rossby wave trains modulated by warmer sea surface temperatures. One wave train is directly related to the strong EP El Niño and originates in the tropical eastern Pacific, propagating eastward to East Asia along the middle and high latitudes, which weakens the Ural ridge and strengthens the NAAA. The other wave train is derived from the northern Indian Ocean and propagates into East Asia along the great circle route, which strengthens an anomalous cyclone in southern China and the NAAA. This results in an anomalous horizontal trough of 850 hPa being captured in eastern China at ∼30°N. The southwesterly flow along the southern margin of the trough transports abundant moisture to southern China, which leads to heavy rainfall in southern China combined with an anomalous ascending motion related to the anomalous cyclone. The southeasterly flow to the north of the trough weakens the East Asia winter monsoon due to a weakened Ural ridge, which then leads to a high PM2.5 concentrations over the NCP with the help of an anomalous descending motion related to the NAAA. A local long-lived convective system developed at midnight over inland South China, producing record-breaking rainfall in Guangzhou on 7 May 2017. This study examines the physical processes responsible for nocturnal convection initiation (CI) and growth. Observational analyses show that the CI occurs in the warm sector under weakly forced synoptic conditions at 500 hPa, while moderate but nocturnally enhanced low-level southeasterlies with a mesoscale moist tongue at 925 hPa intrude inland from the northern South China Sea. Convection-permitting model results show that mesoscale low-level convergence and increased moisture at the leading edge of the southeasterlies are favorable for CI dynamically and thermodynamically. Local ascent and potential instability are further enhanced by orographic lifting and warm moist air from the urban surface, respectively, which trigger convection in northern Guangzhou. The mesoscale moist tongue of southeasterly flows then meets convectively generated outflows, thereby maintaining strong updrafts and continuously triggering back-building convective cells in eastern Guangzhou. Sensitivity tests are conducted to estimate the relative roles of ambient southeasterly moist tongue and urban thermal effects. The southeasterly moist tongue provides moisture that is crucial for CI, while warm moist air from the urban surface is lifted at the leading edge of the southeasterlies and locally facilitates convection. Therefore, the mesoscale processes of lifting and moistening due to nocturnal southeasterlies and their strong interaction with the local factors (orographic lifting, urban heating, and cold-pool-related ascent) provide the sustained lifting and instability crucial for triggering the local long-lived convective systems. The Dynamical–Statistical–Analog Ensemble Forecast model for Landfalling Typhoon Precipitation (DSAEF_LTP) was developed as a supplementary method to numerical weather prediction (NWP). A successful strategy for improving the forecasting skill of the DSAEF_LTP model is to include as many relevant variables as possible in the generalized initial value (GIV) of this model. In this study, a new variable, TC translation speed, is incorporated into the DSAEF_LTP model, producing a new version of this model named DSAEF_LTP-4. Then, the best scheme of the model for South China is obtained by applying this model to the forecast of the accumulated rainfall of 13 landfalling tropical cyclones (LTCs) that occurred over South China during 2012–14. In addition, the forecast performance of the best scheme is estimated by forecast experiments with eight LTCs in 2015–16 over South China, and then compared to that of the other versions of the DSAEF_LTP model and three NWP models (i.e., ECMWF, GFS, and T639). Results show further the improved performance of the DSAEF_LTP-4 model in simulating precipitation of ≥250 and ≥100 mm. However, the forecast performance of DSAEF_LTP-4 is less satisfactory than DSAEF_LTP-2. This is mainly because of a large proportion of TCs with anomalous tracks and more sensitivity to the characteristics of experiment samples of DSAEF_LTP-4. Of significance is that the DSAEF_LTP model performs better than three NWP models for LTCs with typical tracks. Significance Statement: The purpose of this study is to improve the performance of the Dynamical–Statistical–Analog Ensemble Forecast model for Landfalling Typhoon Precipitation (DSAEF_LTP) model by incorporating typhoon translation speed similarity. Under the intensification of global warming, the characteristics of the Three Rivers source region (TRSR; i.e., headwaters of the Yellow River, the Yangtze River, and the Lancang River) in China were diagnosed in the summer season from 1979 to 2015 using observations and reanalysis data. The diagnoses indicate that summer precipitation decreased from 1979 to 2002 [by 9.01 mm day−1 (10 yr)−1; p < 0.05 by Student's t test] and increased significantly after 2002 [by 5.52 mm day−1 (10 yr)−1]. This abrupt change year (2002) was further confirmed by the cumulative anomaly method, the moving t-test method, and the Yamamoto method. By compositing the thermodynamics before and after the abrupt change year (2002), the results reveal that increased water vapor and more substantial lower-level convergence were present over the TRSR during 2003–15. This marked interdecadal variability in the TRSR summer precipitation responded to the interdecadal position and intensity of the large-scale forcing East Asian westerly jet (EAWJ), which is significantly modulated by the low-frequency variability associated with Southern Oscillation index. The connection between the interannual TRSR precipitation and the location and intensity of EAWJ was also explored. The position index of the EAWJ is negatively (with correlation coefficient R of −0.446; p < 0.05 by Student's t test) correlated with the precipitation over the TRSR, implying that southward and northward years of EAWJ are respectively associated with intensifying and weakening the TRSR summer precipitation, whereas the intensity of EAWJ is insignificantly correlated with the TRSR summer precipitation. Spring rainfall is important for agriculture and economics in North China (NC). Thus, there is an imperative need for accurate seasonal prediction of the spring precipitation. This study implements a novel rainfall framework to improve understanding of NC spring rainfall. The framework is built based on a three-cluster normal mixture model. Distribution parameters are sampled using Bayesian inference and a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. The probability behaviors of light, moderate, and heavy rainfall events can be reflected by the three rainfall clusters, respectively. Analysis of 61-yr data indicates that moderate rainfall makes the largest contribution (67%) to the total rainfall amount. The moderate rainfall intensity is mainly influenced by the sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) in the previous season over the equatorial eastern Pacific, and rainfall frequency is influenced by geopotential height anomaly in the mid- to high latitudes in spring. It is also found that more extreme precipitation events can be observed in the spring following an eastern Pacific El Niño event in the previous autumn and winter. Based on these relationships, we develop a multiple linear regression model. Hindcasts for spring precipitation using the model indicates that its anomaly correlation is 0.48, significant at the 99% confidence level. Multiscale processes from synoptic disturbances to diurnal cycles during the record-breaking heavy rainfall in summer 2020 were examined in this study. The heavy rainfall consisted of eight episodes, each lasting about 5 days, and were associated with two types of synoptic disturbances. The type-1 episodes featured a northwestward extending western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH), while the type-2 episodes had approaching midlatitude troughs with southward retreat in the WPSH. Each heavy rainfall episode had 2–3 occurrences of nocturnal low-level jets (NLLJs), in close association with intense rainfall in the early morning. The NLLJs formed partly due to the geostrophic wind by increased pressure gradients under both types of synoptic disturbances. The NLLJs were also driven by the ageostrophic wind that veered to maximum southerlies at late night due to the boundary layer inertial oscillation. The diurnal amplitudes of low-level southerlies increased remarkably after the onset of type-1 episodes, in which the extending WPSH provided strong daytime heating from solar radiation. By contrast, the wind diurnal amplitudes were less changed after the onset of type-2 episodes. The NLLJs strengthened the mesoscale low-level ascent, net moisture flux convergence, and convective instability in elevated warm moist air, which led to the upscale growth of MCSs at the northern terminus of the LLJ after midnight. The MCSs-induced mei-yu rainband was reestablished in Central China during the type-1 episodes with the increased diurnal variations. The findings highlight that the regional diurnal cycles of low-level winds in response to synoptic disturbances can strongly regulate mesoscale convective activities in a downscaling manner, and thus produce heavy rainfall. In this study, we used hourly observations to investigate the cooling effect of summer rainfall on surface air temperature (Ta) in a subtropical area, Guangdong province, South China. Data were categorized step-by-step by rainfall system (convection, monsoon, and typhoon), daily rainfall amount, and relative humidity (RH) level. Moreover, the average hourly Ta variation due to solar radiation was removed from all observations before statistical analysis. The results showed that the linear relationship between hourly Ta variation and rainfall intensity did not exist. However, the cooling effect of rainfall on Ta variation was dominant. In addition, convective rainfall does cause a greater temperature drop than the other two rainfall systems. After further partitioning all samples by RH level preceding the rainfall, the relationship between hourly Ta variation and rainfall intensity became distinctive. When RH was below 70%, rainfall-induced cooling became more substantial and scaled linearly with event intensity, but when RH exceeded 70%, the rainfall cooling effect was generally restrained by the RH increase. A strong correlation between hourly Ta variation and RH level preceding the rainfall suggests the importance of RH on the rainfall cooling effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study identifies diverse synoptic weather patterns of warm-season heavy rainfall events (HREs) in South Korea. The HREs not directly connected to tropical cyclones (TCs) (81.1%) are typically associated with a midlatitude cyclone from eastern China, the expanded North Pacific high, and strong southwesterly moisture transport in between. They are frequent both in the first (early summer) and second rainy periods (late summer) with impacts on the south coast and west of the mountainous region. In contrast, the HREs resulting from TCs (18.9%) are caused by the synergetic interaction between the TC and meandering midlatitude flow, especially in the second rainy period. The strong south-southeasterly moisture transport makes the southern and eastern coastal regions prone to the TC-driven HREs. By applying a self-organizing map algorithm to the non-TC HREs, their surface weather patterns are further classified into six clusters. Clusters 1 and 3 exhibit a frontal boundary between the low and high with differing relative strengths. Clusters 2 and 5 feature an extratropical cyclone migrating from eastern China under different background sea level pressure patterns. Cluster 4 is characterized by the expanded North Pacific high with no organized negative sea level pressure anomaly, and cluster 6 displays a development of a moisture pathway between the continental and oceanic highs. Each cluster exhibits a distinct spatiotemporal occurrence distribution. Two types of heavy rainfall, namely warm-sector and frontal heavy rainfall, coexist in South China during the presummer rainy season and manifest as varying mechanisms and features. They both exhibit close relationships with two types of low-level jets (LLJs): the boundary layer jet (BLJ) and synoptic-system-related low-level jet (SLLJ), but in different ways. The motivation of the present study is to elucidate the statistical relations between the two types of heavy rainfall and LLJs over South China using TRMM rainfall data and ERA5 reanalysis. Generally, warm-sector heavy rainfall mainly occurs over coastal areas and during the early morning, which is primarily caused by the interaction between the nocturnal BLJ and land breeze. In contrast, frontal heavy rainfall is mostly concentrated in inland regions and modulated by distinct diurnal forcings at different locations. Statistical analysis indicates that 76% (62%) of the warm-sector (frontal) heavy rainfall events are associated with LLJs. In the presence of heavy rainfall, low-level winds are often strengthened over Beibu Gulf, northern South China Sea, and the south side of fronts, corresponding to two branches of southerly BLJs at ~950 hPa over the ocean and the southwesterly SLLJs at ~850–700 hPa on land, respectively. Furthermore, BLJs are shown to be linked to both types of heavy rainfall and with the most frequent occurrences of rainfall in their exit region, whereas SLLJs are more closely associated with frontal heavy rainfall. The left side (entrance) of the SLLJ axis is favorable for frontal (warm-sector) heavy rainfall production. The regional rainfall distributions are affected by the structures and locations of LLJs. El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events, which generally mature in winter, profoundly affect the following summer rainfall in eastern China (ECSR), but such an impact can change significantly with decadal background. This study examines how the impact has changed since the 1950s by running correlation and regression analyses. It is found that ENSO's impact on ECSR has undergone two decadal shifts, one in the late 1970s and the other in the 1990s. Sequentially, three distinct ENSO-induced ECSR anomaly patterns are categorized, which exhibit both robust and changeable sides. The robust side manifests generally as more precipitation in the Yangtze River basin affected by the anomalous tropical western North Pacific anticyclone (WNPAC) in the post-El Niño summer. The changeable side is reflected in the more variable ENSO-induced rainfall anomalies north of the Yangtze River, due to the different ENSO-induced East Asian midlatitude circulation anomalies. Meanwhile, the El Niño-induced drought in South China has been enhanced since the late 1970s with the intensification of the anomalous WNPAC. ENSO's changing impact on the ECSR stems from the changes of ENSO-induced tropical and midlatitude circulation anomalies over East Asia, which are associated with different zonal (from the tropical Pacific to the Indian Ocean) and meridional (from the tropical Pacific to the midlatitude North Pacific) teleconnections of ENSO-induced SST anomalies. The former affects the intensity and location of the anomalous WNPAC by affecting the Indian Ocean capacitor effect and convection anomalies over the tropical Indo-western Pacific. The latter modulates the ocean-to-atmosphere feedback in the midlatitude North Pacific, contributes to different local geopotential anomaly sources, and then directly or indirectly through the Rossby wave train affects the East Asian midlatitude circulation.
