Large-scale group decision making (LSGDM) is very common in real world, and especially how to reach a relatively consensus status in a social network is a hot topic. In this paper, we propose a concept of two-tuple linguistic trust/distrust relationship (LTR) which could present both trust and distrust degrees by semantics. The trust/distrust representation scheme can unburden individuals from providing numerical trust or distrust degree to just presenting linguistic variables. Transformation rule from two-tuple LTR to numerical trust degree is then analyzed, followed by the propagation operator of indirect trust/distrust relationships. The advantage of the propagation operator lies in that ignorance in trust/distrust relationships can be tackled rationally. As for the consensus reaching process (CRP), three-level identification and adjustment mechanisms are proposed under the condition that individuals express their preferences in an uncertain distribution form. Trust relationship, consensus degree and reliability of individuals' judgments are all addressed comprehensively to narrow the opinion divergence. Self-confidence extent is utilized as a factor to adjust the opinions of non-consensus experts. This paper aims to fabricate and optimize eco-sustainable cement brick using different sizes of clay brick waste (CBW). The prime input factors of mixtures were clay brick powder (CBP) as a binder, fine-clay brick (FCB) as a fine aggregate, and coarse-clay brick (CCB) as a coarse aggregate, whereas the compressive strength was the main response of the generated eco-sustainable bricks. This was accomplished by utilizing the central composite design (CCD) and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with Minitab-19. Twenty mixtures with CBW were generated and experimentally evaluated utilizing CCD concept in RSM. A multi-objective optimization approach was applied to obtain the optimum results for the input parameters. Based on an experimental program, the optimum mixtures were selected to investigate the physical and durability properties of the produced brick. The SEM test was also performed to determine the effect of the CBW particles on the microstructure of the brick. The life cycle assessment of mixtures is also performed in terms of global warming potential. The optimization showed that the input components CBP, FCB, and CCB had average optimum values of 21%, 0%, and 9.09%, respectively. The experimental results showed that employing CBW yields a durable and high freeze-thaw resistance of the eco-sustainable brick despite its high porosity and absorption. Furthermore, using cement brick with CBW particles is acknowledged as a more environmentally beneficial combination. The pharmaceutical industry presents unique challenges and opportunities for mitigating global environmental impacts. This paper reviewed studies utilizing Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to quantify and analyze how the pharmaceutical sector affects the environment, from active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) to drug formulation, packaging and transportation, and end-of-life disposal. The reviewed LCA literature indicated that the leading contributors to this industry's environmental impacts were energy consumption, particularly electricity use, and chemical application. However, the toxicity impacts should demand equal attention given the potentially severe effects of certain active compounds on human health and ecological systems. We also identified process optimization opportunities, such as transitioning from batch to continuous manufacturing platforms, adopting green chemistry principles, and implementing process intensification techniques. The review further suggested gaps in current research, such as drug recycling, biopharmaceuticals, supply chain strategies, etc. Moreover, we pointed out the current limitations in LCA studies, such as limited system boundaries, unclear data presentation, databases for biopharmaceuticals, etc. Emphasizing the critical need for sustainable development, we stressed the importance of an urgent transition toward cleaner energy sources. We also advocated for using more eco-friendly chemicals across the pharmaceutical life cycle to realize cleaner production in the pharmaceutical industry. This paper introduces an innovative model designed to predict the optimal product prototype within the framework of sustainable development. The model takes into account both quality and environmental impact throughout the entire life cycle of the product, with a specific focus on light electric vehicles. By incorporating customer expectations using the Weighted Sum Model, the model assesses vehicle quality based on the importance of various criteria. Employing life cycle evaluations guided by the Pareto-Lorenz rule, environmental impact for vehicle prototypes is modeled. The resulting Quality-Environmental Indicator of LCA (QLCA) facilitates a qualitative environmental analysis, aiding in the selection of prototypes that align with customer expectations. The model proves effective in guiding decisions related to product development, providing a comprehensive approach to evaluating product value. Notable contributions to the scientific community include the introduction of the QLCA model, which integrates quality and environmental assessments, and underscores the significance of open innovation, sustainable development, and sensitivity analysis for organizational adaptation. Biodiesel is one of the ideal options, considering it is a renewable, biodegradable, non-toxic, environmentally friendly fuel with low pollutant emission. However, biodiesel encounters challenges, mostly connected to its high manufacturing costs, that hinder its continued development and advancement. Focusing on more affordable and environmentally friendly inputs, such as suitable and abundant feedstock and efficient catalysts, is crucial. This paper aims to summarize the literature on biodiesel production and life cycle assessment (LCA) studies, critically review the catalyst and oil feedstock employed, and the findings of the LCAs, focusing on spotting prospective low-cost feedstock sources. Furthermore, an overview of recent LCA-related works applied in various biodiesel processes incorporating various catalysts and oil feedstock was evaluated. The application of LCA and its environmental impacts in biodiesel production was discussed and summarised in table form. The importance of using a sustainable and favorable approach could result in cost-efficient biodiesel production. Additionally, the advantages and limitations of the LCA in biodiesel production have been discussed. Last, the status and challenges of LCA in biodiesel production are covered. Dematerialization through information technology aids in advancing environmental sustainability. Replacing a bound thesis with an e-thesis for a university dissertation will be a complementary paradigm shift for higher environmental performance. Hence, the study intended to determine and compare the environmental performance parameters of conventional paper-based bound-thesis and e-thesis. Moreover, the study aimed to identify the activities causing higher environmental burdens during the production of bound and e-thesis. Open LCA 1.11 was employed for a conventional bound thesis with its e-version submitted by the undergraduates of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka. The study utilized U.S. EPA life-cycle inventory data. The analysis demonstrated that the overall global warming potential of a 40-page hard cover thesis was 4,839,000.00 kg CO 2 -eq to which paper and cover import and paper manufacturing stages contributed more than 99% (4,830,000.0 kg CO 2 -eq). In comparison, a 0.084 MB soft copy of an e-thesis reported a negligible (0.09936 kg CO 2 -eq) global warming potential value. Ozone formation-human health, ozone formation-terrestrial ecosystems, terrestrial acidification, fine particulate matter formation, and marine eutrophication potential were 265,584.31 kg NOx eq, 265,583.21 kg NOx eq, 177,451.5 kg SO 2 eq, 52,948 kg PM2.5 eq, and 29,041.0 kg N-eq for bound thesis production system. Except for the stratospheric ozone depletion impact and water consumption, environmental performance indicators of e-thesis were superior to the conventional-bound thesis. The study recommends the preparation of e-thesis as an environmentally sound approach. Switching to renewables, extended lifespan, and material recycling of devices at the end of use, sustainable forestry practices, process optimization, and cleaner production technologies can further enhance the environmental performance of e-thesis. Additive Manufacturing has revolutionized manufacturing processes, offering design flexibility and advances in various applications. The integration of lattice structures into lightweight designs has attracted attention due to their ability to optimize properties such as stiffness, strength and energy absorption. This paper explores the trade-off between mass reduction and productivity while evaluating the environmental sustainability of lattice structures manufactured with Laser-based powder bed fusion for metals Using Life Cycle Assessment, two design variants for an automotive component are compared: a topologically optimized version with a solid bulk section, and a second design with lattice structures for additional weight reduction. Experimental measurements and a detailed analysis of the laser strategy were performed to build the Life Cycle Assessment inventory. The integration of lattice structures allowed a weight reduction of 6 %, but resulted in a significant decrease in productivity and a higher environmental impact. Surprisingly, lattice geometries, often perceived as green solutions, can have negative sustainability implications due to longer manufacturing times and impact of auxiliary equipment. Successful implementation of environmentally sustainable designs requires a balance between mass reduction and productivity while addressing potential environmental consequences. The fashion supply chain is a major contributor to global waste generation, with significant environmental and social implications. Addressing waste management challenges in this sector is crucial to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Therefore, this paper proposes an integrated approach for modeling sustainable waste flow management in the fashion supply chain and consequently contributes to reducing the associated environmental impact. Firstly, Waste Flow Mapping (WFM) assessment is used to identify waste production at each stage of the fashion supply chain. Secondly, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is used to quantify environmental impact on resource consumption, waste generation, energy usage, and emissions. Finally, performance metrics and sustainability reporting are established to monitor and track environmental performance. Results show: i) a 25–30% reduction in environmental impacts across product life cycles, ii) a 20–25% improvement in resource efficiency iii) an increase of 15–20% in product's life extensions, and iv) approximately 40–50% of materials can be originated from recycled sources. Brazil is the world's leading charcoal producer, mainly used as an energy source and reducing agent for iron ore in the pig iron and steel industry. Despite its vast production, much of the Brazilian charcoal production remains low-tech and inefficient, with limited utilization of by-products. To address potential environmental impacts, promote a circular economy, and reduce energy waste in the charcoal production chain, this study presents the benefits of using wood carbonization by-products through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The analysis was performed by comparing four scenarios: i) Current wood carbonization; ii) Wood carbonization with combustion of non-condensable gases; iii) Wood carbonization with energy recovering of non-condensable gases for electricity generation; and iv) Assessing the utilization of insoluble tar and biomass waste for generating additional electricity, and the use of Pyroligneous Extract (PE) in eucalyptus cultivation. The results demonstrate that by-product utilization prevents energy waste, with an estimated potential to generate 0.19–0.26 MWh per ton of charcoal in Scenarios 3 and 4. Furthermore, 3.3 t of CO2 eq./t of charcoal are sequestered from the atmosphere, and Scenarios 2, 3, and 4 can increase this amount by 5.06%, 6.7%, and 0.48%, respectively. This paper introduces an innovative assessment of PE utilization during eucalyptus cultivation, resulting in a 6.16% reduction in greenhouse gas emission and a 46.98% decrease in abiotic resource consumption, attributed to PE's potential to partially reduce pesticide consumption. By 2050, food production's environmental impacts are projected to double without intervention. Crucial changes in dietary habits are needed, and seafood can be pivotal. The focus in calculating burdens using life cycle assessment (LCA) indicators has shifted towards exploring interconnections within the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) nexus. Addressing this evolution, this manuscript has applied an innovative methodology to calculate a WEF nexus index (WEFni). This index seamlessly integrates both environmental and nutritional profiles across diverse case studies involving fisheries, aquaculture, and processing production systems in the European Atlantic area. The results showed that when it comes to fishing, purse seine fishing obtained the highest score (99%). For the aquaculture activities, seafood (>73%) obtained better results than fish farming. About processing treatments, freezing (>79%) has lower environmental loads than canning. In addition, a sensitivity analysis was carried out according to a caloric- and edible-based functional unit as well as the modification of the weighting factors assigned to each footprint, in which important variations were reported in the WEFni of most case studies. Consequently, although the methodological guidelines supporting the WEFni have great potential to serve as an ecolabeling tool, certain aspects need to be re-evaluated. On the other hand, it could be interesting to include the potential biodiversity loss, as well as other socioeconomic indicators, with the purpose of considering a more sustainability criteria. Crumb rubberized asphalt binder achieves value-added recycling of waste scrap tires, as well as enhancement of mechanical properties and aging resistance of asphalt pavements. This paper provides a systematic literature review of the aging evolution and sustainability implications of crumb rubberized asphalt binder based on peer reviewed publications during 1993–2022. The analysis of the literature shows that aging methods, chemical-microstructural characterization, rheological-mechanical properties, and environmental benefits are the main research directions in studying aging of crumb rubberized asphalt binder. Furthermore, recent investigations mainly concentrate on the thermal aging behavior of crumb rubberized asphalt binder, while ultraviolet-induced aging and weathering aging lack attention. Rubber degradation is a characteristic manifestation of crumb rubberized asphalt binder during aging that can be characterized by chemical investigations. Aging-induced cracks are mitigated by rubber particles shown by microstructural observations. Rheological-mechanical investigations show different evolutions in high-temperature properties of crumb rubberized asphalt binder after aging, but a superior low-temperature cracking resistance as compared to base asphalt as well as styrene–butadiene–styrene modified asphalt has been observed. The inconsistent findings in the fatigue properties of aged crumb rubberized asphalt binder are compared and attributed to the selection of evaluation indicators. Life cycle assessment shows that depending on the local waste management policy, significant environmental benefits of crumb rubberized asphalt binder in terms of reduced energy consumption and global warming potential are possible. This paper reviews the published research pertaining to the use of superheated steam for carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite reclamation. Superheated steam has been used for this purpose for around a decade and was initially investigated to prevent the degradation of reclaimed fibres, which occurs during the oxidative char removal step of most pyrolysis-based reclamation techniques. The review evaluates the various methodologies employed with particular focus on the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of the reclaimed fibres, and the environmental impact of using superheated steam for carbon fibre reclamation as determined by life cycle assessment. Superheated steam studies report recovering carbon fibres with retained tensile moduli of around 90%–100% and tensile strengths of 65%–100% when compared to virgin carbon fibres, however, when optimised it is shown that carbon fibres can be recovered with no loss in stiffness and strength. Most studies are still at laboratory- or pilot-scale, however, several companies are collaborating with researchers to investigate the potential of this reclamation method on a larger scale. Early analysis on the energy use of carbon fibre reclamation using superheated steam shows that energy savings of 25% could be made by recycling CFRP waste using superheated steam and using the recovered carbon fibres to displace virgin carbon fibres rather than landfilling and incinerating this waste. • Review of the developments pertaining to superheated steam use for carbon fibre reinforced polymer reclamation. • Superheated steam reclaimed carbon fibres retain tensile strengths of 65%–100% and tensile moduli of around 90%–100%. • Review of the life cycle assessment of superheated steam-based carbon fibre reinforced polymer reclamation. • Examples of superheated steam reclamation processes entering the pilot-plant/industrial phase. The assessment and monitoring of society's progress towards sustainability requires a multidisciplinary approach in which tools, indicators and data are integrated across existing frameworks. In this sense, the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the life cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA) framework introduced by UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative are two of the most important references used by practitioners to assess sustainability at territorial level, in the first case, and at process, product, or organizational level, in the second case. However, due to the different scopes of SDGs and LCSA, the integration between the two tools has been limited so far and the synergies mostly remained untapped. Building on LCSA literature, and with the aid of text-mining analysis, this manuscript analyzes how linkages between product LCSA and SDGs have been and could be addressed, also highlighting key challenges and needs for connecting LCSA with SDGs in a coherent and operational way. The paper highlights that, although SDGs and LCSA are complementary and could inform and feed each other, as of today there is no harmonized way to set up and analyze the connections between the two and progress still seems far from reaching general consensus. In recent years, sustainability concerns gained traction in the scientific literature on cleaner production, as well as in industry and application. In this regard, the circular economy (CE) is intended to contribute to the current ecological transition, providing economic advantages and preserving global society for future generations. CE initiatives have been implemented in recent decades to offset the harmful environmental consequences of supply chain operations. Notably, CE strategies can be applied at different supply chain levels, in product design, manufacturing, transportation, consumption, and disposal. Using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, the present research examines a case study from the Italian egg industry, highlighting the environmental benefits and social implications of initiatives supporting CE (i.e. the use of recyclable and biodegradable packaging and the adoption of a short supply chain). The implementation of those CE strategies shows a 22% reduction in Kg CO 2 -eq emissions, proposing that circular concepts should be incorporated into sustainable supply chain management. Notably, this paper analyses the environmental implications of the intermediate phases of the egg industry supply chain. Both primary and secondary data have been collected. We collected primary data via direct interviews with companies' managers throughout all the study phases. As a result, despite various external issues affecting the company decisions, the paper shows that incorporating CE strategies may deliver demonstrable environmental benefits for the companies. In addition, other strategies that should be adopted in the long term have also been outlined. Finally, the implications that sustainable behaviours of the companies can entail have been examined. Fly ash (FA) and recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) have been extensively studied, aiming to improve the sustainability of concrete. The biomineralisation method has also been researched to enhance the performance of concrete. However, introducing FA and RCA may decrease the strength of concrete, and the biomineralisation method may create extra environmental impact (EI) due to the production of bacteria and corresponding chemical agents. It is hard to directly judge the influence of these methods on the sustainability of concrete. This paper proposes to explore the sustainability of concrete with FA, RCA, and biomineralisation methods by life cycle assessment. Six scenarios were established, and Six EI categories of the six scenarios were quantified. The quantified EI values considering their corresponding strength were obtained and compared. The results showed that: using FA decreased EI, using RCA showed a limited effect on decreasing EI, the biomineralisation method significantly decreased EI, and using the treated RCA increased EI due to its high consumption of chemical agents in the treating procedure. In summary, biomineralisation enhanced FA concrete performance is recommended to substitute traditional concrete widely after comprehensively comparing sustainability, workability, strength, and durability. The increasing nature of biomedical waste and its improper disposal has become a significant concern, resulting in a negative impact on the environment. These are associated with the direct consumption of input materials along with generated co-products and wastewater. This paper aims to address the environmental burden of existing biomedical waste management in the northern part of India. It also aims to suggest some constructive steps which result in a less impactful environment through the Life cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. LCA is a widely used sustainable assessment tool to evaluate the environmental performance of various waste management systems. The present study's functional unit is all the waste collected at a common treatment and disposal facility. A gate-to-gate approach has been performed based on the foreground data gathered from field surveys, semi-structured interviews, and background data of Eco invent database v1.03. The data has been further evaluated using LCA software SimaPro 9.1.0.4 utilizing the CML-IA impact assessment method. The impact categories include Abiotic Depletion (AD), Abiotic Depletion (fossil fuels) (ADF), Global Warming (GWP), Ozone Layer Depletion (OLD), Human Toxicity (HT), Freshwater Aquatic Ecotoxicity (FAE), Marine Aquatic Ecotoxicity (MAE), Terrestrial Ecotoxicity (TE), Photochemical Oxidation (PO), Acidification (AF), and Eutrophication (EP). The results indicate that the integrated system, including incineration with energy recovery, autoclave-shredder, chemical disinfection, and Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), reduces the environmental burden compared to the present state. The reliability of the model is tested using sensitivity and uncertainty analysis. The analysis identifies the influential key processes, parameters, and impact categories. This paper suggests that LCA is a beneficial tool for the decision-makers and managers to take strategic decisions for reducing environmental burden and developing a life cycle inventory database for the developed economies. In this paper, the results of a sustainability assessment for the study of the reuse of un-melted feedstock powder in Directed Laser Deposition are reported. Ti6Al4V ELI powder was employed as material for the study and the un-melted powder was collected and reused as raw material for subsequent cycles of deposition. A total of three deposition cycles were completed and data for a Life Cycle Assessment were compiled. From the experimental work results, the un-melted powder suffered minimal changes that did not affect the critical characteristics analysed. The Life Cycle Assessment showed that reusing the powder, and consequently reducing the total mass of raw material consumed, resulted in significant environmental benefits. All the categories considered saw approximately a 15%–25% environmental impact reduction when reusing the powder as compared to a scenario when only virgin material is used. Most of the environmental footprint was seen in the production of the powder as compared to the transportation and manufacturing stages. The production phase, when reusing and when using only virgin powder, accounted for 89% and 95% of the total environmental impact respectively. This meant the environmental benefits due to the lower mass of powder used far outweighed the increase in water and energy required for the powder reuse process in the manufacturing stage. In this paper, the dominance of the physical effects of ultrasound (US) pretreatment in improving the delignification of wheat straw at a 1:20 solid/liquid (biomass/water) ratio is reported showing low-frequency/high power (25 kHz, 2 or 3 kW) as preferred conditions. The sonochemical pretreatment with alkali was identified as an optimal method to make the cellulose more susceptible to further enzymatic hydrolysis, thereby increasing the yield of soluble sugars. Previous bench-scale studies have shown that US pretreatment has a positive effect on delignification, nevertheless this has not yet been demonstrated on a larger scale. The objective of this study was to demonstrate the effectiveness of US pretreatment for wheat straw delignification from lab to semi-industrial scale (40 kg biomass) in terms of sugar yield and energy efficiency. A 59.2% of lignin removal was recorded after the cavitational treatment of wheat straw with a subsequent 68 ± 5.7% yield in terms of enzymatic hydrolysis (52.6% glucose, 42.9% xylose and 4.5% arabinose). It was demonstrated that the positive effect of US alkali pretreatment of wheat straw on sugar yield was due to a combination of factors, including (i) an easier accessibility of the biomass carbohydrate network to enzymes due to the increased wheat straw porosity, (ii) the partial removal of lignin, which increases the relative proportion of carbohydrates in the treated biomass, and (iii) the disordering (amorphization) of the cellulose structure, which promotes carbohydrate hydrolysis as well as saponification of the acetyl groups in the hemicellulose. With respect to the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and the Cost Benefit Analysis the US pretreatment process herein reported was compared to an alternative Steam Explosion pretreatment. Since the different matching schemes between manufacturing tasks and services have a great influence on the life cycle sustainability of complex product system (CoPS), the strategy used to find cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and socially acceptable matching results is essential for sustainable development. This paper proposed a novel two-sided matching model for CoPS based on life-cycle sustainability assessment (TSMM-CoPS-LCSA). First, the two-sided matching model based on the life-cycle sustainability assessment of manufacturing tasks and services for CoPS is presented. Then, a bi-level decision-making method is proposed, where learning and synergy effect are considered to ensure stability in the matching process. Sequentially, to facilitate the optimization solution, the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions are adopted to convert the bi-level model to a single model which aims to minimize the total cost, environmental impact, and social impact. Subsequently, for solving this nonlinear and complex multi-objective decision-making model, an improved hybrid algorithm that integrated Tabu Search and non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (TS-NSGA-II) is applied to solve the above model. Finally, a case study of CoPS manufacturing project is illustrated to demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed TSMM-CoPS-LCSA model. The results indicate that the proposed method can find a better services scheme in line with actual demand, which provides a guiding significance for promoting the sustainable development of the manufacturing industry. Product life cycle assessment (LCA) and sustainability assessment have proven as powerful methods to identify sustainability hotspots and support decision making. In practice, corporate decision support is often hampered by the complexity resulting from the three sustainability dimensions and inherent uncertainties. In this study, a novel a posteriori visualization is presented, based on the concept of satisficing or similarly sustainable alternatives integrating scenarios to account for different use options. This allows the decision makers (DMs) including management-relevant information in their decision while selecting a satisficing alternative. The presented approach supports consensus building among DMs with differing weighting preferences for the three pillars of sustainability as common in life cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA) and leads to a consensus in product selection for relevant scenarios. This also supports the selection of more robust alternatives under a variety of use cases compared to the common focus on best performing alternatives for a particular use case. For illustration, a case study of a self-leveling compound (mortar) manufacturer interested in selecting a sustainable packaging system for a variety of different use cases is presented. Paper bags, flexible intermediate bulk container, one-way cardboard container and a pumping truck, all used with different machinery, are evaluated under several scenarios. Using first-hand field data, this case study shows how the proposed visualization supports consensus building among DMs. The case study shows that in 87% of all scenarios the use of the 25 kg paper bag in combination with a mixing drum and cart resulted as a satisficing sustainable alternative. Life cycle assessment is an analysis technique used to assess the environmental burdens of products or production processes. Ecosystem services is a concept used to understand the ways functioning ecosystems support human wellbeing. Both are used to understand how anthropogenic pressures impact the environment. The integration of ecosystem services as indicators in life cycle assessment is increasingly being explored, however there are several limitations with current frameworks. A brief review of existing approaches found they incorporate ecosystem services as midpoint indicators within traditional life cycle assessment structures and aggregate these impacts under the conventional 'areas of protection' (i.e., groupings of impacts). These approaches typically only focus on how product systems negatively affect ecosystem service supply (predominantly through land use) and overlook how product systems use up ecosystem services to mitigate their emissions or how interventions in product systems could improve ecosystem service supply. It is argued by several authors that ecosystem services are better placed as endpoint indicators representing damage to the instrumental value of ecosystems in a manner distinct to existing life cycle assessment impact categories, so that any changes in their delivery should be assessed within a new area of protection. In this paper, the potential for an ecosystem services area of protection within life cycle assessment is explored and a novel framework for modelling endpoint characterisation factors related to ecosystem service impacts that addresses the limitations of existing approaches is presented. The proposed novel framework respects existing life cycle assessment protocols by quantifying the endpoint damage to ecosystem services from product systems alongside existing methodologies for modelling endpoint impacts to ecosystem quality (biodiversity), human health and natural resources. Municipal waste management, especially in developed countries, has a significant impact on the environment and humans that need to be quantified and mitigated. This study aims to investigate and compare the environmental impact and occupational risks of the following three municipal waste collection methods in Italy: street bins, door-to-door collection, and a smart bins system. Six waste categories (paper, plastics, glass, metal, organic materials, and residual waste) are analysed. Environmental performances are calculated by the life cycle assessment (LCA) and material and flow analysis (MFA) methodologies. The ergonomic analysis is based on direct observation of municipal waste collectors and the application of standard assessment methods as RULA, NIOSH, and Snook Ciriello. show that the smart bins collection method is environmentally more effective in all the impact categories considered, thanks to the better quality of collected waste. The residual waste flow directed to landfills has a lower value in the case of smart bins (36.63%) in comparison with door-to-door (52.90%) and street bins (89.56%). The use of smart bins allows higher environmental benefits, passing for the Climate Change impact category from −2.80E+01 kg of CO2eq. of the door-to-door system and −2.74E+01 kg of CO2eq. of street bins to −7.13E+01 kg of CO2eq. of smart bins. Regarding the transport phase, the smart bins system determines a reduction of the impact of about 60% if compared with the door-to-door system for all the impact categories considered. On the other hand, acceptable occupational risks result in street and smart waste collection methods, while poor ergonomics conditions are observed during the door-to-door collection. Agriculture's primary function is the production of food, feed, fibre and fuel for the fast-growing world population. However, it also affects human health and ecosystem integrity. Policymakers make policies in order to avoid harmful impacts. How to assess such policies is a challenge. In this paper, we propose a conceptual framework to help evaluate the impacts of agricultural policies on the environment. Our framework represents the global system as four subsystems and their interactions. These four components are the cells of a 2 by 2 matrix [Agriculture, Rest of the word]; [Socio-eco system, Ecological system]. We then developed a set of indicators for environmental issues and positioned these issues in the framework. To assess these issues, we used four well-known existing approaches: Life Cycle Assessment, Ecosystem Services Analysis, Yield Gap Analysis and Agro-Environmental Indicators. Using these four approaches together provided a more holistic view of the impacts of a given policy on the system. We then applied our framework on existing cover crop policies using an extensive literature survey and analysing the different environmental issues mobilised by the four assessment approaches. This demonstration case shows that our framework may be of help for a full systemic assessment. Despite their differences (aims, scales, standardization, data requirements, etc.), it is possible and profitable to use the four approaches together. Toe cap for safety shoes is an extremely important protective equipment to prevent injuries caused by falling objects. It can be considered that more than 600 millions toe caps are disposed every year, without the possibility of disassembly them from the shoes. This represents a serious concern and sustainable solutions must be found to decrease the weight on the environment generated by the safety shoe market. In this context, a valid answer can be found in the use of carbon fiber prepreg scraps that can be employed in a circular economy approach, avoiding their disposal in landfill or through incineration, to produce certified and light toe caps. Unfortunately, carbon fiber scraps are associated to high production cost and environmental impacts (mainly due to the high energy requirement for the manufacturing of carbon fiber). Thus, the development of a zero-waste system is mandatory to achieve a conscious use of the resources. In this paper, a reclaim method for prepreg scraps and the relative manufacturing process for toe caps are assessed from the environmental point of view. The impacts are compared with those of a traditional process based on a thermoplastic material (Polycarbonate). Results demonstrate that the reclaim process is extremely sustainable due to the low energy requirements. However, some improvements of the manufacturing process are necessary to make toe caps realized with prepreg scraps more sustainable than the traditional ones. To assess the potential benefits and impacts of circular bio-based buildings, life cycle assessment (LCA) is a valuable method to identify systems or elements that have negative effects on the environment during the whole building life. To achieve low carbon buildings, LCA should be performed during the early design stage of buildings, to influence the choice more environmentally led solutions. In this paper, LCA was used during the early design stage of a circular bio-based wall panel prototype to guide the decision-making process for the improvement of the panel's design. A cradle-to-cradle life cycle assessment was performed to compare the circular wall panel against other prefabricated wall panels, assembled using common construction materials and techniques. Results indicated that a circular design and some bio-based materials are not always synonymous with low environmental impacts. The first iteration of the circular panel had a GWP 100 of 231.1 kgCO 2 e/m 2 in the base case with one life cycle. This compared to 116 kgCO 2 e/m 2 and 181 kgCO 2 e/m 2 for the timber and steel frame panels respectively. The LCA was able to identify materials and components which contribute most significantly to the panels environmental impact. The identification of highly impacting materials in the initial panel design, LCA was used to guide the re-design of the circular bio-based panel. From investigating alternative materials for the insulation, cladding and internal substrate the environmental impact of the new design of the circular panel was lowered to 122 kgCO 2 e/m 2. This research demonstrates how LCA can be used in the design process to reduce carbon emissions in circular buildings by using bio-based materials. Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) emerged as an innovative computer technology capable of ensuring information security through encryption algorithms. In recent years, this technology has been discussed in different industries, including the construction sector. Although the advantages of applying DLT in construction projects are numerous, several barriers and limitations are associated with its application. The difficulties are even more exacerbated when examining the uses of DLT for achieving more sustainable buildings. In this context, this article conducts a comprehensive literature review on blockchain, the most discussed DLT technology nowadays, for sustainability, focusing on extending key applications discussed in various fields to the construction industry and real estate. The novelty of this review paper is the presentation of an in-depth discussion of what the next steps in blockchain research should be in order to integrate its applications for achieving a sustainable construction environment with cleaner production and resource use efficiency. Methanol is a key product in the chemical industry, not only for producing other higher economic value chemicals, but also serves as a source of renewable energy that can substantially reduce carbon emissions. However, limited data are available on methanol total supply chain costs that consists of production, biomass cost, investment cost and the efficiency of the conversion processes. This paper recommends using an agent-based simulation–optimization in analyzing and reporting results by system elements (techno-economic assessment) or unit processes (life cycle assessment) as well as by the overall product system, of methanol supply chain. Major decision making are included in the agent-based simulation–optimization model to evaluate methanol synthesis pathways. This evaluation includes biomass and methanol ordering policy, capital budgeting during the lifetime of the methanol supply chain, carbon emissions per metric ton of methanol with specific focus on contribution to Indonesia Gross Domestic Product. The principal results obtained from the agent-based simulation show a better conversion technology pathway that leads to lower carbon emissions, higher internal rate of return, shorter payback period, and less price sensitivity of the methanol supply chain. The article proposes methanol from biogas as the chosen conversion technology pathway by considering its capability of sequestering carbon dioxide from bio-digester and lower capital investment, as well as its economic attractiveness to methanol production investors. Agent-based models (ABMs) have been adopted to simulate different kinds of complex systems, from biological systems to complex coupled human-natural systems (CHANS). In particular, when used to simulate man-managed systems, they allow considering human behavioural aspects within the modelling framework. On the other hand, environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has become an acknowledged tool in research, industry and policy to assess systems' environmental sustainability. More recently, LCA is being applied to assess the potential environmental impacts of large scale policy actions (e.g., actions to combat climate change). This paper describes the application of a coupled ABM-LCA model to simulate cropping activities in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The ABM considers farmers' proneness to risk, which was assessed via a naïve Bayesian model trained with the results of a survey distributed to the farmers of the study region. The goal of the study is to assess the effects of the agents' interactions, that can take place in a farmers' social network, on the agricultural activities. Geographic Information System (GIS) information, national statistics and naïve Bayesian model are used to parameterize agents' behaviour and interaction rules. We believe such assessment is necessary for the successful design of public adaptation strategies and subsidy schemes since governmental adaptation actions are needed to reduce emissions due to agricultural activities. Two scenarios (with different levels of farmers' environmental awareness) were simulated. The results show that the mean and variance of the distribution of farmers' environmental awareness change due to the effect of the interactions and, as a consequence, farmers' long-term decisions concerning agricultural activities are affected. This is reflected in the environmental impacts generated by such activities.
