The aggravation of the global warming crisis, due to excessive consumption of traditional energy, urgently calls for the strategic goal of sustainable development. This study addresses endogeneity concerns by employing panel fixed effect and DID models, employing panel data from China's provincial green finance index spanning from 2016 to 2021. The empirical findings indicate that: (1) the impact of the new energy industry on environmental and economic benefits is more pronounced in inland areas characterized by lower GDP and smaller population size; (2) this effect is driven by green technological innovation, government incentive policies, and job creation. This paper explores the determinants of economic cycles in Chinese provinces, examining factors like information accessibility, communication infrastructure, technical innovation, and energy usage patterns. The research unveils a negative impact of green exports on economic cycles, potentially influenced by China's recent stringent environmental regulations. The findings suggest that basic communication facilities and energy consumption structure pose initial hindrances to economic cycles. Yet, they foster information dissemination and technical innovation. Despite the negative influence of green imports and specific technology-oriented trade segments on economic cycles, the study underscores the imperative of prioritizing long-term sustainability. It emphasizes the adverse association between energy consumption structure and economic cycles, highlighting the necessity of transitioning to cleaner energy sources despite short-term financial implications. Water-energy-food (WEF) nexus system enables to examine the implications for sustainability. Inevitably, shocks from socioeconomic subsystems would impact the stability and reliability of the WEF nexus system. This paper aims to identify the reasons for changes in water withdrawal, energy consumption, and crop consumption, and uncover differentiated effects from both the national and provincial perspectives, and finally offer the main strategies in China that balance socioeconomic development and resource-saving from the consumption perspective. Empirical results in China from 2011 to 2017 show that (1) the reduction of per capita energy consumption leads to a decrease in water withdrawal, while increased population and water withdrawal intensity in energy sectors have adverse effects on diminishing water withdrawal. (2) The decrease in energy consumption mainly results from improved energy use efficiency for the whole period. (3) Reduction in national crop consumption is mainly caused by the decline in energy consumption per person over the years, which implies a positive effect of food-energy nexus effect on the decrease in crop consumption. (4) Spatially-temporarily contribution rates of drivers offer implications to the implementation of resource-saving and sustainability in the future. Based on 196 prefecture-level cities in China from 2006 to 2021, this paper constructs a weight matrix of urban economic geography and uses the spatial differential model to verify the impact of smart city policies on urban green energy efficiency. The results show that the efficiency value of green energy fluctuates in Chinese cities. Different test results show that smart city policies can effectively improve urban green energy efficiency, but mainly from the time effect rather than the individual effect. It means the improvement in urban green energy efficiency comes more from the fast-growing of the Chinese economy and urban construction in this period than from the country's smart city pilot policy. In addition, from the spatial spillover effect result, China needs to design a better urban spatial development plan to improve the capacity of smart city energy services and vigorously develop intelligent technology represented by information and communication science. As the path of industrial eco-efficiency (IEE) needs to be re-examined from a multi-dimensional perspective, this research opens the internal "black box" of China's industrial eco-economic system driven by sustainable development goals (SDGs) and decomposes IEE into industrial production and sustainable development stages. It further divides the industrial production stage into two parallel subsystems of water use efficiency (WUE) and energy efficiency (EE) and derives SDG6 efficiency (SDG 6 E) and SDG7 efficiency (SDG 7 E) in the sustainable development stage respectively. The paper proposes a meta two-stage parallel entropy dynamic DDF-DEA model to re-measure IEE of 30 provinces in China from 2015 to 2021, discusses the relationship between overall efficiency and stage efficiency, and by using the Tobit model explores various types of influencing factors by subregion. The results show that the modified DDF-DEA model can explore China's IEE more accurately under SDGs. China's IEE is more stable from 2015 to 2021, with the efficiency value always fluctuating between 0.59 and 0.64, the overall level is low, and there is more room for improvement. There are significant inter-provincial differences in IEE and efficiency inertia. In more than 75% of the provinces SDG 7 E constrains IEE improvement, while the dynamic evolution of IEE and its subsystem efficiency varies across regions. Environmental regulation is a common factor affecting IEE across the country and in the east, central, and west regions, whereas the level of economic development, openness to the outside world, and urbanization rate are differential factors affecting IEE across the country and in the three major regions. This study offers new perspectives for exploring the path of IEE enhancement and providing empirical references for the collaborative construction of industrial ecological civilization. • A numerical model is established to quantitatively characterize the sustainability of the geothermal recovery system in backfilled stopes of coal mines. • The overall geothermal energy capacity provided by the system is evaluated. • The sustainable heat extraction rate of the system is evaluated. • The benefit of groundwater flow to system sustainability is quantified. Deep underground mines offer a great potential as low-enthalpy geothermal resource to be adopted in direct regional heating. In this paper, a parallel horizontal ground heat exchangers (pHGHE) system is introduced to utilize the geothermal resource in deep coal mines, however, the sustainability of the system in a long-run performance has not been well addressed in the previous study. This work presented a quantitative evaluation on the long-term sustainability of pHGHE system installed in backfilled stopes of deep coal mines. A novel numerical model is applied to characterize the heat transfer occurring between the horizontal pipes and backfill stopes. The proposed model was first verified to an analytical solution to determine the model reliability and accuracy. The validated numerical model was further applied to a typical underground backfilled stope of Anju coal mine in China. The results demonstrated that the maximum sustainable specific heat extraction rate must not exceed 40 W/m to maintain a 50-year exploitation period. A total thermal capacity of 17 GWh could be realized during each extraction cycle under the current conditions, which could provide heating to more than 170,000 m2 of residential building area. Accordingly, sensitivity analysis was performed to identify the key parameters influencing system sustainability. In addition, the effects of groundwater flow on the thermal interaction and long-term sustainability of the pHGHE systems were examined. Groundwater flow can be beneficial to the long-term sustainability of the system. This work confirms the feasibility and sustainability of geothermal resource utilization in backfill stopes of underground coal mines. During the last decades, a large set of policies have been used to reduce the coal dependency of China and diversify the source of energy used. Despite the decrease in the coal intensity of production, extensive differences still exist across regions, where development trends are influencing coal efficiencies and use. By impacting the sustainability performances of the country, regional disparities need to be investigated. With this objective, a perfect decomposition technique is used, for the first time, to analyse the drivers of coal consumption changes across four macro-Chinese regions for the years 2000–2016. Characterized by three major development programmes and five-year plans with specific energy targets, this period is particularly relevant to investigate the relationships existing between socio-economics factors and coal consumption changes. Results show that economic prosperity has been the main driver of coal consumption increase and, for the most developed areas, coal intensity contributed to slow down the coal consumption rise. Regional differences on internal migration rate largely influenced the population effect. As a special form of a cluster city, urban agglomeration has become an important platform to support national economic growth and to participate in international competition and cooperation, but it faces severe environmental problems. This research thus selects panel data of 60 cities in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration (BTH), Yangtze River Delta (YRD), and Pearl River Delta (PRD) from 2013 to 2017. Based on the input–output perspective, labor and energy consumption per GDP are selected as input indicators, GDP, PM2.5, SO 2 , industrial smoke and dust emissions, and wastewater discharged as output indicators, and fixed assets as a carry-over variable in the dynamic DEA model to evaluate and analyze the environmental efficiencies of these three urban agglomerations. Findings show that their total environmental efficiency exhibits a wave-like development trend, and that the total efficiency score of BTH is better than that of PRD and YRD. From the viewpoint of a sub-efficiency index, PM2.5 is the lowest in unexpected output, where its average five-year efficiency score is 0.9847, while the average score of industrial smoke and dust emissions efficiency is the lowest at 0.6199.
