Westernized alcohol and commercial tobacco use prevention approaches for Native Americans have not been effective, or sustainable. The overall objective of this study examined the effect of the culturally based Urban Talking Circle (UTC) intervention versus standard education (SE) program for the prevention of alcohol and commercial tobacco use among urban Native American youth. The study employed a 2-condition quasi-experimental design and utilized convenience and snowball sampling methods for recruiting 100 urban Native American youth participants in two urban Native American community program locations in Florida. Study participants were randomized by their urban Native American community program location to one of the 2-conditions. These included the standard education (SE) program used within United States school systems (drug abuse resistance education) and the Urban Talking Circle (UTC) intervention, culturally tailored and developed for urban Native American youth from the culturally based Talking Circle Intervention for rural Native American Youth. The Native American Alcohol Measure for Youth (NAAMY) and Native Reliance Questionnaire were utilized to collect participants' data. Participants' data was analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance to determine differences between the scores on all measures at pre/post-intervention for the 2-conditions. Study findings indicate that a culturally based intervention was more effective for the reduction of commercial tobacco and alcohol use than a non-culturally based intervention for urban Native American youth. The impact of culture on non-kin cooperation has been singled out as critical for economic activity. However, causal evidence of culture's influence on cooperation remains scant. In this paper we provide such evidence, focusing on two key components of culture: preferences and beliefs. Adopting the view that culture is one aspect of an individual's multi-faceted self-concept (identity) we conduct a Prisoner's Dilemma experiment with first- and second-generation Chinese immigrants at a large US public university. In a two-by-two design, we exogenously vary: i) the salience of participants' American or Chinese cultural identities; and ii) the capacity for culture to affect beliefs by randomly providing previous-session cooperation-rate information. As a novel form of infrastructure, 6G is poised to become an indispensable component of the future digital economy and serves as a solid guarantee for the development of human society. Given that technological innovation inherently possesses purpose and direction, its progress cannot be divorced from the correct value orientation. However, scholarly attention towards investigating the value proposition of 6G remains limited. Establishing a scientific and rational value system assumes paramount importance in shaping future investments and deployments of 6G and fostering advancements in associated technologies. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the value proposition of 6G, examining it from multiple perspectives including economic, social, ecological, cultural, and strategic dimensions. In addition, we explore the four vertical value dimensions of nation, industry, firm and individual. By integrating the technology life cycle framework into our consideration, we elucidate how value is realized and evolves across different stages. The beneficial health, wellbeing and liveability impacts of urban nature are broadly evidenced and increasingly engaged with in planning and policy. But anomalies in empirical evidence suggest that benefits do not flow equally to all. This review paper analyses the contribution of existing research on how the material and social context and subjective factors shape the social impact of urban nature. We review 46 international papers published between 2019 and 2021 that present findings from inner-city metropolitan contexts. The findings evidence variations in benefits and some dis-benefits derived from urban nature associated with features of the material context (e.g., urban and greenspace form, infrastructure and facilities), the social context (e.g., demographic diversity and socio-economic standing) and subjective factors such as gender and cultural identity. We recommend an inclusive research and planning approach that is attuned to the role of the human experience in the realisation of the social impact of urban nature to ensure that the prevalent urban greening agenda actually benefits all city dwellers and does not unintentionally contribute to further inequality. This paper aims at understanding transformations of cultural identity in Azerbaijan by exploring raptures, continuations, and re-formulations of marriage rituals during Soviet times (1920–1990). Seven women born in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s and, raised in different regions of Soviet Azerbaijan were interviewed, sharing their memories of their own and their parents' marriage rituals. Their narratives provide a nuanced understanding of the complex interplay between political, social, and economic factors that influenced Azerbaijani cultural identity, which historically has interacted with many different cultures. To examine the interaction of local cultural identity with the Soviet colonial power in time and space, we use Mikhail Bakhtin's 'chronotope', Stuart Hall's elaboration of 'cultural identity,' and Homi Bhabha's concepts of 'hybridity' and 'third space.' Colour is an important factor in the expression of recognizability and cultural identity of regional cultural and creative design. At present, the colour recognition of regional characteristic and the colour association of regional culture mainly rely on the designer's subjective perception. To obtain the target colour resources with reference for regional cultural and design need, this study proposes a scientific method of colour extraction and strong colour association matching of Shanghai style Chinese paintings by machine learning, and applies the related results to the colour design of cultural and creative products. Firstly, using the SLIC superpixel algorithm and Mean shift algorithm to realize the overall dimensionality reduction of the image features and the colour aggregation gradually, so as to extract the characteristic colours of Shanghai style Chinese paintings; Secondly, we introduce a data mining algorithm (Apriori) to mine out the association rules from multiple characteristics colours and filter out strongly associated colour combinations; Finally, we apply the colour combinations and colour tones to the colour design of the creative products. In order to verify the scientificity of the colour extraction and colour matching method proposed in this paper, we selected another painter's paintings in the same school as the algorithm experimental validation sample, similar results were obtained. In addition, we measured user satisfaction using the degree of awakening to Shanghai style culture and the propensity to make consumer decisions as the evaluation dimensions, which proves that the method of this study is effective. According to Lefebvre's analysis, urbanisation is not only an expansion of urban footprint but, in a broader sense, the radical socio-spatial transformation of society. The cultural setting and its physical manifestation creating distinctive identities within a city are transformed by rapid urbanisation and gentrification. The effects will be analysed in three terms of simultaneous sociocultural-spatial changes; cultural displacement, physical transformation of neighbourhoods, and change in cultural identities. The paper intends to hypothesise whether cultural displacement and altering cultural identities by gentrification and rapid urbanisation will signify gentrified homogenised cities in the future. The paper investigates aspects of multiculturalism and inter-culturalism to mitigate the challenges in sustaining multicultural places in cities. It tries to find the complementary approach of both to generate harmonious multicultural diversities and socio-economic sustainability, keeping the cultural identities intact. One of the examples of rapid urbanisation and gentrification challenging multicultural aspects and altering cultural identities lies in the core of the cultural capital of India, Kolkata in Tangra, Chinatown. The cultural identity of India's only existing Chinatown is changing from 2 to 3 storey live-work based multicultural communities to 30 floors high-rise homogenous gentrified enclaves displacing the diverse cultural communities from the core of the city. Cities – and, in general, urban agglomerations – have in recent years become foci of social science research and policy interest. Prominent attention has been given to agglomeration advantages, mobility patterns, urban decay, inequity problems, residents' quality of life, safety and crime, labour and housing markets, public amenities, and urban planning issues. Less attention however, has been paid to the basic question: what makes the city a 'real' and attractive city? This question prompts essentially a research challenge on the ' raison d'etre ' of cities, in particular on the residential satisfaction and quality-of-life motives of urban inhabitants. The present paper aims to pinpoint attractiveness characteristics of cities based on perceptions of urban quality by residents and their affinity with city life. This paper offers a micro-based (individual) assessment of motives and appreciations of citizens, in terms of their love for the city. A typological distinction will be made between the ' soul ' of the city (its spirit, history, cultural identity, ambiance, social capital, etc.) and the ' body ' of the city (its built environment, infrastructure, public amenities, supply of housing, green areas, etc.). The empirical analysis – applied to the four largest cities in Sweden (Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmoe and Umea) – will be undertaken in two steps: (i) an exploratory statistical analysis of the findings from an extensive micro-based survey questionnaire among inhabitants in these four urban agglomerations; (ii) an explanatory evaluation of the individual appreciation scores using a regression approach. Our results show that the 'City Love Index' is a useful construct that can be decomposed into 'soul' and 'body' aspects of the city. Our multivariate regression analysis demonstrates clearly that both factors matter. More detailed results suggest that it is the perceptions regarding the city's 'walkability' and 'vibrancy', both part of the 'soul' of the city, that have a significant influence on the City Love Index - for all cities studied. Access to maternal health services has increased in Ethiopia during the past decades. However, increasing the demand for government birthing facility use remains challenging. In Ethiopia's Afar Region, these challenges are amplified given the poorly developed infrastructure, pastoral nature of communities, distinct cultural traditions, and the more nascent health system. This paper features semi-structured interviews with 22 women who were purposively sampled to explore their experiences giving birth in government health facilities in Afar. We used thematic analysis informed by a cultural safety framework to interpret findings. Our findings highlight how women understand, wield, and relinquish power and agency in the delivery room in government health facilities in Afar, Ethiopia. We found that Afari women are treated as 'others', that they manipulate their care as they negotiate 'cultural safety' in the health system, and that they use trust as a pathway towards more cultural safety. As the cultural safety framework calls for recognizing and navigating the diverse and fluid power dynamics of healthcare settings, the onus of negotiating power dynamics cannot be placed on Afari women, who are already multiply marginalized due to their ethnicity and gender. Health systems must adopt cultural safety in order to ensure health quality. Providers, particularly in regions with rich cultural diversity, must be trained in the cultural safety framework in order to be aware of and challenge the multidimensional power dynamics present in health encounters. • Cultural safety is a powerful framework to interpret and contextualize minority women's experiences in birth. • Afari women are treated as 'others' in their health system. • Afari women manipulate their care to enhance their own safety during childbirth. • Health systems, and their providers, must adopt cultural safety to ensure health quality. In this research paper, I present findings related to ideology shifts students experienced within a social issues in education course at a conservative Christian research university. I find that ideological transformation occurred through the revelation of self and/or social tensions, the development of cognitive and experiential cross-cultural exchanges, and the recognition/reconsideration of when, where, and why one is and is not privileged. Good faith personal reflections on identity, engagements with course experiences, and willingness to work through ideological dissonance helped ideological self-transformation, clarification of the struggle against alienation, and cultivation of transformational agency. Teacher educators can support transformations by using tools such as social inquiry, and critical dialogue, and helping students apply critical analytical frames to education and society. • The primary and most sacred aspect of pre-service teacher identity tends to frame the ways they approach learning about cultures, identities, and experiences. • Providing course experiences that helps teachers align their values and identities is vital to ideological and conceptual transformation. • Students with less privileged social identities or those with more tangible experiences within marginalized groups do more to transform observed social issues in education than peers. • Social inquiry, critical dialogue, and critical frames of analysis led to increased ideological transformation. This article contributes to the conservation of modern architectural heritage buildings by emphasizing the retrofitting of their construction systems. Modern architectural heritage buildings in Turkey are crucial in terms of transferring not only the cultural identity of the nations to further generations but also architectural sustainability of its distinguished period. By time, where these buildings can have constructional problems with its original structural systems, proposing a new system related with new earthquake regulations is inevitable in order to conserve them. Because most of the buildings are under threat of being demolished. The purpose of the research is to evaluate existing modern architectural heritage buildings in terms of its existing structural system and to develop a constructional model for renewal of them. As a case study, two hotel examples in İstanbul as a modern architectural heritage is selected, one is Hilton Hotel and the other is Çınar Hotel respectively. Then, the architectural plans and sections of the buildings as a data has been collected through literature survey by content analysis. At the end, the model proposal has been developed for each hotel buildings according to existing structural systems. The proposed models can be applied to sustain the life of the hotel buildings with a retrofitted structural system. Urban green infrastructure provides city dwellers numerous benefits. Among them, cultural ecosystem services (CES) are distinguished by being easily perceived and essential for people and their well-being. However, not all CES are equally easy to perceive, resulting with some of the CES categories being weakly explored. Research on CES also rarely considers elements of urban green infrastructure other than parks and forests. Therefore, there is a lack of research on different components of urban green infrastructure, especially tree-based, perceived in relation to CES. This paper presents the results of focus group participatory mapping implemented with citizens in the city districts of Zagreb on the perception of five selected CES categories in various types of urban green infrastructure. Our results show that participants perceived 13 different types of tree-based urban green infrastructure as providers of CES. We also distinguish patterns in the perception of CES categories and their connection with types of tree-based urban green infrastructure. Tree lines are perceived as providers of aesthetical experiences. Furthermore, forests and park forests are perceived in relation to place attachment and recreational activities, while parks are versatile and provide all explored CES. Other types that emerged as important were greenways, greenery around residential buildings and educational institutions, which provokes rethinking of a careful planning of the entire repertoire of urban green infrastructure. • Perception of CES of tree-based UGI was quantified and explored. • 13 types of tree-based UGI in relation to CES were perceived in the city of Zagreb. • Patterns in CES perception from tree-based UGI can be clearly distinguished. • Focus group participatory mapping is an effective tool for CES research. Recent research suggests that there is an urgent need to create transitions to agroecology to address the many ecological, social, and ethical problems caused by the hegemonic Corporate Food Regime. In the Global South, however, there are already numerous and diverse agroecological initiatives driven by peasant communities, indigenous peoples, and grassroots organizations. Although many agroecological innovations developed by such grassroots groups have been identified, they have seldom been analyzed under a specific theoretical framework of innovation (e.g., grassroots innovation). To contribute to this gap, in this paper we review the existing literature on agroecology that is concerned with innovation. Further, we analyze three case studies in Michoacán (Mexico) using two theoretical frameworks: grassroots innovation and transitions to sustainability. The cases illustrate different visions and ways of practicing agroecology, as well as the development of several agroecological innovations. Our study provides empirical evidence about the potential of grassroots groups in the Global South for creating innovations that can be useful in the transition to a more just and sustainable food regime based on agroecology. • Examines the adoption of meat reduction as one of the personal climate actions. • Demonstrates that meat reduction is not yet on par with mainstream actions. • Analyses how adopters of meat reduction differ from those who just take other actions. • Adopters are motivated by broad environmental, social and public health concerns. • Incongruences due to the cultural meaning of meat reduction may hamper adoption. Meat reduction might become a new extension of the personal climate actions in the European Union (EU), but this development is not without challenges. Focusing on consumers, this paper investigates 1) how meat reduction is related to other climate actions and 2) how adopters of meat reduction and those who just take other actions differ in concerns about world problems and sociocultural characteristics. The data are from Eurobarometer 95.1 (Spring 2021). The analyses revealed that the adoption of meat reduction was related to the adoption of other climate actions, but that it was not on par with mainstream pro-environmental actions. Participants who incorporated meat reduction in their climate actions were more than the others motivated by broad environmental, social and public health concerns. Those who did not incorporate meat reduction scored lower on these concerns and might have been negatively affected by incongruences between the cultural meaning of meat reduction and their cultural identities in terms of right-wing positions, masculinity or social class. The results showed that meat reduction is part of an adoption process and that the Northwestern countries were somewhat further on in this process than the Southern and Eastern countries. Conservation of heritage buildings presents a significant approach to cultural identity and continuity. In this regard, previous literature has focused on architectural heritage. However, limited studies have been conducted to investigate the sustainable conservation hierarchy. Given the potential integration of Sustainable Development Goal requirements and green conservation of heritage buildings, this paper develops a hierarchical-based sustainability approach, which refers to the 3Ts green conservation framework. Based on this developed framework, three acronyms, namely, targets and green retrofitting, tools for building information modeling, and tasks through stakeholder involvement, have been proposed. The proposed framework identifies how green sustainable initiatives can be incorporated into heritage buildings, while preserving their significance and characters, through three acronyms, which should be considered simultaneously across the different hierarchical conservation stages, including heritage identification, documentation stage, action plan, and follow-up. This paper discusses how the concept of co-learning and the pedagogy of vulnerability (Brantmeier, 2013) can explain shifts in participation in a language classroom. Its empirical evidence is from our investigation of interactions in an eikaiwa (English conversation) classroom in Japan where small groups of Japanese learners of English are encouraged to converse with a language teacher. Using multimodal Conversation Analysis, we found that the participants showed more active engagement when the teacher reversed his role from a language authority to a cultural novice and when the participants drew on their experience and expertise. In this way, conversation for learning becomes conversation for knowledge co-construction, conversation for perspective-taking, and conversation for co-learning. Fundamental to the conversation for co-learning approach is the pedagogy of vulnerability, in which the traditional authoritative and subordinate relationship between teachers and learners are challenged and reversed. Correctional systems are often quite limited in their capacity to work cross-culturally and little guidance is currently available to support effective practice. This paper considers the different ways in which correctional practice is regulated, arguing that efforts to understand cultural values and knowledge are central to the development of cross-cultural practice guidelines. However, it is further suggested that specific advice about how professionals should respond to everyday scenarios is required if correctional services are to provide culturally safe/competent services. This paper explores the ideas of children from three age groups in five different European as they discussed the concepts of 'home' and 'belonging'. Findings showed that the children's ideas could be organised into six interrelated aspects: Spatiality, Materiality, Multiplicity, Social Relations, Affect, and Dislocation. Whilst there were differences in the ways that the children conceptualised home across the classes, even the youngest children were able to describe their ideas using metaphors and abstract concepts, and they agreed that a home was more than just a building. Traditional Arab Islamic urbanism has been ignored for decades, and Arab architects have been unwilling to revive traditional features and they are complying with the new urbanism movement. Since the late nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, the style of big Arab cities has become substantially westernized, historic Arab cities transformed from traditional to modern Western urbanism led to a loss of Islamic cultural identity, many factors led to the transformation of the urban structure of these cities including social, economic, legislative and functional which leads to loss of local identity by introducing new architectural and urban forms. This paper will focus the scope of study on old Islamic Cairo, Khedivate Cairo and The New Administrative Capital (NAC) and will analyze the transformation happened to the urban structure using the comparative analysis methodology to reach the research aim and know why the conventional urbanism of Arab Islamic cities has been ignored?
