The Carnian Pluvial Event (CPE) induced an intense carbon-cycle disturbance and biological crisis at a global scale. The eruption of the Wrangellia Large Igneous Province (W-LIP) is considered a possible triggering mechanism; however, this cannot fully explain the significant differences in environmental perturbations across different regions. In this paper, we present detailed records of petrography, mercury geochemistry, carbon and sulfur isotopes, trace elements, and provenance data for the Triassic lacustrine facies of the Ordos Basin in the North China Plate, which provide insights into the important effects of volcanic activities, other than the W-LIP, on palaeoenvironment during the CPE interval. Massive emissions of SO 2 , CO 2 , and pyroclastic deposits resulting from these volcanic activities triggered four humid episodes, each characterized by lake-level rise, negative δ13C org excursion, a transition from mudstones to organic-rich shales facies, as well as algal bloom within a time span of 180 kyrs. The establishment of an age framework in the Ordos Basin enables comparative analyses of environmental evolution during the Carnian age across the North China Plate, the western Tethys domain, and the South China Plate. During the period of global climate perturbation driven by the W-LIP eruption, we conclude that short-term localized volcanic activities may have further induced high frequentcy environmental perturbations, which influenced biological shifts and increase organic carbon burial. These short-term volcanic activities with different occurrence times and frequencies complicate local-scale palaeoenvironmental evolutions, which may be an important reason contributing to significant differences in environmental perturbations during the CPE interval across different regions of the globe. • Four humid episodes and sedimentary changes occurred within 0.18Ma in the Ordos Basin during Carnian age. • Environmental changes in the Ordos Basin was related to the local volcanisms in its nearby Qinling orogenic belts. • Short-term local volcanisms can complicate the environmental evolutions in different parts of globe during the CPE interval. • Local volcanic processes may cause inconsistent environment perturbation in different parts of globe during the CPE interval. Authigenic chlorite plays an important controlling role in reservoir quality, and is widely distributed in the tight sandstone reservoirs of the Triassic Yanchang Formation in the Southwestern Ordos Basin, China. The occurrence and origins of authigenic chlorite were investigated using an integrated approach of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron probe microanalysis, and fluid inclusion analysis. The sandstones are fine-grained lithic arkoses and feldspathic litharenite with 11.5% volcanic rock fragments. Authigenic chlorite occurs in two morphotypes, including pore-lining and pore-filling chlorite. Pore-lining chlorite occurs as coatings on the framework grains and covers the entire fining-upward sandstones. Pore-filling chlorite is restricted to the middle to upper part of the fining-upward sandstones and appears as discrete flaky plates or rosettes in the pores or attaches to the surfaces of pore-lining chlorite. Pore-lining chlorite originated from smectite precursors that were derived from volcanic material alteration in the early stage of diagenesis, with temperatures primarily about 90 °C. In contrast, pore-filling chlorite was precipitated in pore spaces with higher concentrations of Mg2+ and Fe2+ released from volcanic rock fragments and mica debris dissolution. Moreover, the chemical composition of pore-filling chlorite was affected by early calcite cementation which consumed some ions at temperatures lower than about 110 °C. The thin and continuous pore-lining chlorite is the only chlorite type with a positive effect on reservoir quality, whereas the very thick pore-lining chlorite (>6.7 μm) or pore-filling chlorite significantly reduce the porosity and permeability. The Kuqa Foreland Basin, adjacent to the southern Tianshan Mountains, is an important gas-producing basin in northwestern China. The development of the basin is dominated by a regional stress field with orientations of the maximum horizontal stress (S Hmax) in the north-south direction, as a result of the collision between the Indian and Eurasian Plates. Previous studies have noted variations in the stress state in the Kuqa Foreland Basin; however, little attention has been paid to understanding the mechanisms causing such variations. In this study, a systematic analysis of in-situ S Hmax orientations and fractures has been carried out using image logs from eight wells and XMAC/DSI logs from five wells. These wells are located in an East-West (E-W) trending fold-thrust in the foreland basin. The S Hmax orientations (having quality ranked between A and D) obtained from borehole breakouts and drilling-induced fractures are highly variable and occur as two evidently different stress patterns on a scale of less than 10 km. The first stress pattern with S Hmax orientations between NNW and NNE (165.08 and 188.59 °N) is broadly comparable to the regional stress field inferred from earthquake focal mechanism solutions in northwestern China from the World Stress Map (WSM). The stress pattern is interpreted to be controlled by plate boundary forces related to the collision between the Indian and Eurasian Plates. The S Hmax orientations for the second stress pattern, however, ranging from NNE to ENE (26.65–57.77 °N), are clearly inconsistent with the regional stress filed and have been influenced by local geological factors. Faults and hinge-parallel fractures (trending in an approximately W-E direction) formed during the syn-folding stage probably resulted in heterogeneity of elastic properties and thus deflected S Hmax orientations, both laterally and vertically, to generate the second stress pattern. The NE-striking hinge-oblique fractures are interpreted to have formed in response to the stress reorientation. Observations in this study suggest that there may exist a close relationship between fracturing (faulting) and stress variations, and pre-existing faults and fractures can influence subsequent fracturing by regulating local stress fields on a scale of several kilometers. The coupling between fracturing or faulting and stress produced fracture swarms, which can significantly enhance fluid flow and hence petroleum production. • S Hmax orientation is regionally controlled by Eurasian-Indian Plate collision. • Fault and fracture are primarily responsible for local stress reorientation. • Pre-existing fractures affect subsequent fracturing by altering local stress field. • Stress orientation couples with fracturing to produce fracture swarms. This paper discusses the effect of the source rock–reservoir assemblage and the assemblage–induced variability in hydrocarbon expulsion and the subsequent molecular composition as well as molecular thermal maturity within a hybrid shale system. The characterization work was conducted on lithofacies and microlamina scales using core samples from the Chang 7 3 sub-member of the Triassic Yanchang Formation in the Ordos Basin, China. Samples were collected from a narrow interval with a depth range of less than 15 m, and the main characterization work was performed by Rock-Eval pyrolysis and GC–MS analysis. The results show that chemical fractionation of preferential expulsion and migration of the saturated fraction exists in the source rock–reservoir assemblages at both the lithofacies and lamina scales. However, the molecular composition behaves differently at the lithofacies and lamina scale's source rock–reservoir assemblages, in which ∑C 21 − /∑C 22+ is higher in lamina scale reservoir but lower in lithofacies scale reservoir. It is assumed that the low-molecular weight n -alkanes also follow molecular fractionation. The lithofacies reservoir has a lower ∑C 21 − /∑C 22+ because of the strong storage capacity of the laminated micro-reservoir within shale, which prevents the newly generated lighter oil from being charged into the lithofacies reservoir. The variation trends of thermal maturity indices Ts/hopane, the relative pregnane content, and TA(I)/TA(I + II) ratios, which have the same chemical basis with ∑C 21 − /∑C 22+ , carry the same maturity signature as ∑C 21 − /∑C 22+. The above profile of the molecular composition and molecular-derived thermal maturity parameters indicate that within the short interval of a shale system where no differences in thermal maturity are expected, chain scission reactions and their derived thermal maturity indicators are very sensitive to source rock and reservoir. In addition, within a shale system, oil is more easily to expel out from the organic-rich lithofacies that are interbedded with organic-lean lithofacies. Oil expulsion may promote both chain cracking of oil and subsequently kerogen decomposition. This may provide geological evidence to explain why the frequent-stacking assemblage of source rock and reservoir lithofacies in a hybrid shale system is an ideal target for shale oil exploration. Understanding the flow processes that form gravity-flow deposits is vital for modeling and predicting sandstone bodies in the subsurface, which is of great significance for conventional and unconventional oil and gas exploration and development in lacustrine basins. This study analyses gravity-flow deposits of the Late Triassic Chang 7 oil member of the Yanchang Formation in the Ordos Basin, using a combination of well-log analysis, core observations, thin-section analysis, and laboratory measurements. The sedimentary facies, formation mechanisms, distribution patterns, and depositional models of gravity-flow deposits are investigated. Thirteen facies and eight bed-types are recognized in the gravity-flow deposits. Bed types represent deposits of sandy slides, sandy slumps, debrites, high-density turbidites, hybrid event beds, transitional flow deposits, surge-like low-density turbidites, and quasi-steady low-density turbidites. Gravity-flow deposits, particularly those caused by sediment failure, are composed of slides, slumps, debrites, high-density turbidites, hybrid event beds, transitional flow deposits, and surge-like low-density turbidites. These deposits form as isolated lenticular sand bodies, with retrogradational internal stacking patterns. In contrast, gravity-flow deposits caused by flooding rivers are composed of high-density turbidites, hybrid event beds, transitional flow deposits, and quasi-steady low-density turbidites. These deposits exhibit elongate morphologies with progradation stacking patterns internally. The collision between the North China Block and the South China Block, which occurred during the closing of the Qinling Ocean, lead to frequent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. These activities promoted the development of gravity-flow deposits associated with sediment failure from delta fronts in both the northeastern and southwestern parts of the basin. Concurrently, extremely humid climatic conditions promoted increased fluvial drainage, leading to enhanced hyperpycnal flows into the deep-lacustrine basin depocenters in the Late Triassic. Considering the complex factors controlling volcanic reservoirs, the Carboniferous strata in the eastern slope area of the Mahu Sag (ESMS) in the northwestern Junggar Basin (NJB) were investigated using rock cores, thin sections, scanning electron microscope (SEM), physical properties, major elements, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), well logging, and seismic data. The volcanic rocks revealed by drilling are mostly weathering crust reservoirs (WCRs), the formation of which in and around the study area is significantly controlled by weathering and leaching (WL). Most types of volcanic rock can be improved by long-term weathering. Favorable reservoirs in the ESMS are often developed within 150 m below the tectonic unconformity boundary at the top of the Carboniferous. The longer the weathering duration, the better are the overall quality of the WCRs. Weathering duration of about 40 Ma is probably an important threshold in the NJB. Ultra-long leaching of atmospheric water and strong late dissolution of acidic fluids before oil and gas accumulations are important for reservoir development and petroleum accumulation in volcanic strata filled with authigenic minerals, especially calcite. The early regional tectonic movement affected the volcanic eruption and controlled the lithofacies distribution. The linear density of fractures was negatively correlated with the distance from the main controlling fault. Owing to the relatively weak filling, high-angle fractures contribute significantly to the reservoir permeability. The physical properties of volcanic breccia are better than those of tuff, and the porosity, permeability, and fracture density of andesite are higher than those of basalt. The physical properties of near-source facies belts of a volcanic edifice are better than those of far-source facies ones. Favorable exploration areas are the structural highs and fault zones where the duration of WL is more than 40 Ma, explosive facies and effusive facies near the crater are developed, or the inherited ancient buried hills transformed by faults and fractures near excellent source rocks, where the dissolution of atmospheric water and organic acidic fluids are strong. • Weathering duration controls degree of weathering, affects volcanic reservoir quality. • Most of favorable reservoirs developed within 150 m below tectonic unconformity. • Weathering duration of ∼40 Ma is probably an important threshold in NW Junggar Basin. • Coupling relationship between weathering-leaching and calcite filling plays a key role.
