Electric distribution grid operations typically rely on both centralized optimization and local non-optimal control techniques. As an alternative, distribution system operational practices can consider distributed optimization techniques that leverage communications among various neighboring agents to achieve optimal operation. With the rapidly increasing integration of distributed energy resources (DERs), distributed optimization algorithms are growing in importance due to their potential advantages in scalability, flexibility, privacy, and robustness relative to centralized optimization. Implementation of distributed optimization offers multiple challenges and also opportunities. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the recent advancements in distributed optimization for electric distribution systems and classifications using key attributes. Problem formulations and distributed optimization algorithms are provided for example use cases, including volt/var control, market clearing process, loss minimization, and conservation voltage reduction. The paper addresses a real-time optimization-based reference calculation integrated with a control structure for Modular Multilevel Converters (MMC) operating under normal and constrained situations (where it has reached current and/or voltage limitations, as it may occur during system faults). Firstly, a nonlinear optimization problem has been developed in which it prioritizes to satisfy the AC grid current set-points imposed by the transmission System Operator (TSO). The constrained nonlinear optimization problem is formulated based on the steady-state model of the MMC, whereby the prioritization is achieved through distinct weights defined in the Objective Function’s (OF) terms. The resultant optimization problem, however, is highly nonlinear requiring high computation burden to be solved in real-time. To cope with this issue, this paper applies a Linear Time-Varying (LTV) approximation, which permits to represent the nonlinear dynamics of the system as constant parameters, while a Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) system is used to formulate the optimization constraints. The converter’s current references are determined in real-time by solving a constrained linearized optimization problem at each control time step, which considers the TSO’s demands, the current MMC operating point and its physical limitations. Theoretical analyses comparing the responses of the linear and nonlinear optimization problems are performed to validate the accuracy of the LTV approximation. Finally, the linearized-optimization problem is integrated with the MMC controllers, evaluated under different AC and DC network conditions and compared with conventional control strategies, where it is shown that the presented method can be potentially employed to obtain the MMC current references for distinct network scenarios. In the conventional sliding mode control, the four-leg distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) currents are controlled based on a current error in each phase. However, the four currents in a four-wire system can not be independently controlled variables and hence one of the four controllers is redundant in conventional schemes. Further, the current dynamics of a DSTATCOM converter are coupled through converter pole voltages in the natural reference frame. This leads to cross-coupling in the sliding variable equations with respect to four manipulated input variables. Considering the above points, in this paper, the current due to Thevenin’s equivalent load neutral-point voltage is considered as a fourth independent controlled variable and the corresponding system dynamic equations are presented. To get a decoupled feature, a new sliding surface function is structured. The performance of a DSTATCOM with the proposed control scheme under various operating conditions is validated through a detailed simulation study and experimental results, obtained from a laboratory prototype of four-leg DSTATCOM. Multilevel converters (MLCs) are pioneers in the field of electrical energy conversion. From the classification of MLCs, modular multilevel converter (MMC) is top-rated due to its attractive structure and performance. The modular nature and no need for isolated DC resources are two significant advantages of this converter. However, the need for many sensors to control its performance is a considerable drawback. In addition, the internal circulating current in the MMC causes losses, decreases efficiency, and increases the voltage ripple of capacitors. This paper proposes combining a new capacitor voltage sorting method and an open-loop controller based on arms energy estimation to control the MMC using two voltage sensors in the arms and one current sensor at the output. The proposed method ensures continuous voltage balancing of the capacitors and removes multiple voltage sensors from sub-modules (SMs). With the growing penetration of distributed renewable energy, distributed control approaches are widely utilized in voltage control of active distribution networks (ADNs), suffering from limited applicability for control devices or heavy communication burden. This paper develops an innovative distributed voltage control strategy of ADNs with global sensitivities (DVC-GS), which integrates network information from a global optimization view to coordinate energy storages, PV inverters and the OLTC with little communication and computing time. The global sensitivities of voltage violations across all buses with respect to nodal voltage and active/reactive power injection are formulated to quantify the ability of each controllable resource for alleviating voltage violations in the entire ADN. The back-and-forth communication combined with the modified DistFlow model is newly developed for the real-time update of global sensitivities at each bus with high accuracy and no iteration. Then the coordinated control of various devices is implemented on basis of global sensitivities to effectively ensure voltage security of ADNs. Unified power flow controller (UPFC) gains growing application in power systems due to its power flow regulation ability. However, there is still a dilemma in the incorporation of UPFC into security-constrained economic dispatch (SCED). The modeling of UPFC involves nonlinear and nonconvex operational constraints, which is difficult to solve efficiently and accurately. Conventional methods adopted Taylor expansion or sensitivity analysis to realize the convexification of UPFC models, which leads to a loop structure and is subject to initial point choice. In this paper, a novel three-terminal injected UPFC model is proposed. In the proposed model, the voltage source variables are eliminated completely. Instead, only power injection variables are introduced to equivalently describe physical characteristics and constraints of UPFC. The nonlinear and nonconvex operational constraints of UPFC are transformed into mixed integer second-order cone form. Moreover, compared with conventional UPFC models, the control characteristic of UPFC is considered in a more accurate and practical manner in the proposed SCED, which helps to prevent potential risks of power flow over-limit under N-1 contingencies. Evaluation of conservation voltage reduction (CVR) factor is critical to peak load reduction, 556 energy conservation, and many CVR-related power system control/optimization strategies. This paper proposes a novel robust CVR factor evaluation method using soft constrained gradient analysis based on time-varying load modeling and real utility field measurements. Firstly, the time-varying ZIP parameter identification is formulated as an over-determinant problem composed of first-order gradient with respect to each coefficient and soft constraints representing temporal correlation of loads in each time step, in order to improve the robustness and smoothness of CVR factor evaluation. Then, problems in time series are coordinated with a sliding window approach. A necessary condition for selecting the smallest window size is proposed and strictly proved to guarantee the existence and uniqueness of the solution of time-varying load modeling problem. Finally, time-varying CVR factors are accurately and robustly calculated with field measurements and the identified load model. Case studies are performed using sufficient field measurements obtained from two real utilities. Unlike existing methods that require a large number of measurements to obtain precise estimation of CVR factor, the proposed method is sufficiently accurate even when the measurements are limited or of low time resolution. Further, the accuracy and robustness of the proposed approach are validated under different types of uncertainties and compared with other existing data processing and CVR factor evaluation methods. A new smooth model is proposed in this paper to eliminate the non-differentiability of several types of limits in power flow models. The proposed smooth model accurately represents power system static models with limits as a continuously differentiable function. Analytic results are developed to show that each solution of the proposed smooth model is arbitrarily close to a solution of the corresponding original power flow model with limits. The proposed smooth model includes a wide range of devices with physical limits, such as generators, transformers, HVDCs, phase shifters, and shunts. In addition, it is shown that every generic static bifurcation in the original model is transformed into a saddle-node bifurcation in the smoothed model. Hence, the search for bifurcations in voltage stability assessment can be greatly simplified. With the emergence of the hybrid multi-infeed high voltage direct current (HMIDC) system, there is complex dynamic interaction between the AC/DC system and converter stations, while the interaction mechanism of the HMIDC system is unclear. For this purpose, this paper establishes the HMIDC linearized model based on the motion equation concept. Then, after decoupling and reconstructing the interaction path of the HMIDC system, the damping coefficients are derived. The AC system strength and voltage source converter (VSC) terminal voltage controller parameters are selected to analyze the impacts on damping coefficients, and the interaction mechanism of the HMIDC system is analyzed. In order to solve the potential instability issue, an additional damping controller in the VSC terminal voltage loop is proposed to enhance the voltage stability of HMIDC system, which is realized by adjusting the reactive power/amplitude coupling damping coefficient. Finally, the RT-LAB-based hardware-in-the-loop experiments verify the accuracy of the interaction mechanism analysis of the HMIDC system and the effectiveness of the proposed controller. The paper establishes convergence properties of decentralized and distributed control strategies that use a Steinmetz-based technique for mitigating voltage unbalance on distribution feeders. Reactive power from distributed energy resources (DERs), such as solar photovoltaic (PV), is used to balance voltages at critical nodes in the distribution network. Interactions between controllers are analyzed and a theoretical guarantee is derived for stability of the control algorithms. This is achieved using Banach fixed-point theory. Providing such convergence results ensures robustness of the proposed control algorithms in realistic settings where parameters are uncertain and/or slowly varying, disturbances are prevalent, and control and measurement signals are prone to delays. Finite-control-set model predictive current control (FCS-MPCC) always has large steady-state fluctuation and computational burden. In this paper, a novel FCS-MPCC without a modulator to drive permanent magnet synchronous hub motors (PMSHMs), which combines virtual vectors expansion scheme and duty cycle control was proposed. The lack of a modulator reduces the complexity of the control system. The virtual vectors are synthesized by using active vectors, which improve the accuracy of voltage selection, and further improve PMSHM's steady-state performance and reduce current harmonics. The duty cycle control uses a zero vector to obtain better steady-state performance. However, the duty cycle of the virtual vectors is limited by the synthesis method, and further analysis is needed. A new calculation process is proposed to reduce the amount of calculation. The deadbeat principle is used to get reference voltage which determines sectors. Then, the best voltage vector in the selected sector is determined by the predetermined cost function. The traditional MPCC and the duty cycle MPCC (DCMPCC) are used as a comparison item to compare with the proposed method to illustrate its effectiveness. Traditional single-ended fault location method is influenced by the fault resistance, and the remote in feed, which reflects as the two equations built by fault phase have four unknowns. And in the grid-connected converter system, the weak feedback characteristic further reduces the performance of the method. To solve it, a single-ended fault location method based on control and protection coordination is proposed in this paper. First, using the high controlled-ability of the converter, the control strategy for fault ride-through (FRT) operation is divided into two stages by switching control modes. Then, according to the electrical quantities under two stages, four uncorrelated equations can be established, and the equations still have four unknown parameters. The fault distance can be calculated by solving them. The simulation results show that the proposed method has high accuracy and is immune to fault resistance and fault location, it solves the problem of insufficient equations in principle. This paper presents a new control strategy for enhancing the dc voltage regulation and the transient response in the multi-terminal VSC-HVDC system by ensuring swift power-sharing among converters when encountering large disturbance such as converter loss or ac fault at one of the converter stations. The quick power sharing can be realized using direct power control (DPC) since it has a merit of fast power dynamic response. On the other hand, to limit the converter current during ac fault, a new coordination strategy between DPC and vector current control (VCC) is proposed. Furthermore, a new simplified model of the MTDC system is developed to study the performance of DPC in enhancing the dc voltage dynamics response analytically. The time-domain simulation of the detailed model of the four converter stations MTDC system verify that the proposed control strategy significantly reduces the overshoot in the transient dc voltage response following an outage or ac fault. As a result, together with the droop gain selection for the maximum permissible steady-state dc voltage deviation, the proposed control strategy can help to reduce the size of the dc chopper in the MTDC grid or even avoiding it. Moreover, the comparative analysis based on time-domain simulation depicts that the proposed simplified model has the same dc voltage response compared to the detailed model of the MTDC system except for a steady-state error of 0.47% and a little bit longer settling time (1.5 ms) at transient. The main challenges for Finite Set-model Predictive Torque and Flux Control (MPTC) include huge calculation amount, large torque ripple, and the selection of weighting factor. To deal with these challenges and achieve the fastest torque response, a novel MPTC strategy with virtual voltage vector-based pattern is proposed in this paper. In each control period, a desired voltage vector is computed based on the maximum torque variation rate. The virtual desired voltage vector is combined by using basic voltage vectors with the minimum switching times. The switching pattern between two adjacent control periods is optimized by using a cost function in realtime. Compared with the traditional MPTC approach, the novel strategy has multifaceted improved performances: faster torque response, less calculation amount, lower switching frequency, reduced torque ripple, higher efficiency and no weighting factor.
